The Duren trade let the Knicks dump Kemba's salary (clearing space to sign Brunson and Hartenstein), and it gave them a future first which was eventually used in the Bridges trade. At the time Duren was redundant with a healthy Robinson (and he still is).

The bigger issue for the Knicks is that they could have had Jalen Williams at 11. But they traded 11 for 3 picks. 1 pick was used in the KAT trade, 1 pick was used in the Bridges trade, and one pick they still have (hasn't conveyed yet and will likely turn into a couple of 2nds).
