Additional fun fact the very first C5.R had the transmission bolted directly to the engine. The moved it to the rear differential a short time after it debuted. Probably when they went from the 6.0 liter to the 7.0 liter engine, but my only source on that is the 1999 24 Hours of Daytona broadcast.

They didn't put a transaxle in it until 2002, the 7L swap was done for the last race of 1999 and the wide track suspension at Mosport 2000. There is a lot of stuff on the late 1999 cars that people think of as being from 2000 because most of the images and press coverage from 1999 you ever see is just Daytona. (seriously it's ridiculously hard to find pictures of the car from this race, so I THINK they had started undercutting the bumper across the entire width but hadn't relocated the brake ducts to the center with the radiator duct just yet but that's based on blurry youtube uploads of the TV footage)

This is a bit extreme to say when the gap is nearly 3 seconds but Fuji is close to the most top speed oriented track a GT500 car would actually be faster. Hypermeme may be slow as dick but they have 25-30kph higher trap speeds at Fuji. Basically one of the reasons they are so goddamn slow most tracks is because they run what would normally be their Le Mans specific aero everywhere. Well the other big thing is whether they would be allowed to run Bridgestones or forced to use some rock hard Michelin that lasts for 6 hours.

RSC has no gallery for that race or most of the other late season ones the Corvette showed up for, it's unfortunate. DSC article is all Daytona and Sebring except for one picture of Sonoma where it has the new hood and the roof duct is gone, which together with Fehan talking about changing the car significantly twice during 1999 to try to appease the ACO was the only reason I realized they had gotten the car much closer to how they ran in 2000 later in that season.

They actually do seem to have the same nose on the car at Sonoma as Vegas. It's kind of hard to describe and it's pretty hard to make out the details in the Goodwrench scheme, but I think if you had them side by side the late '99 and early '00 splitters would be basically the same at the outside corners and the center where the radiator duct is, but the brake ducts protrude outwards to meet the rest of the bumper underneath the engine air intakes and cover it up a bit more still while they basically flattened that all out when they moved them to the middle.

Afaik the rumor came the Italian media.

The front cooling architecture of C5-R's is kind of an interesting puzzle but it changed a few times over the years. Like I always kind of wondered what the fuck they did with the big engine air intakes beside the fog lights when they had tiny air restrictors and this is the first time I've seen the mesh fenced part on the inside was also feeding the radiator. I can't even tell on this car which duct actually feeds the airbox and which is the brakes, and even more oddly it has the 2000-2001 NACA duct beside the headlights mounted even though this is a 2002 chassis which was upgraded to 2003 bodywork. Seems like that was actually feeding the air restrictors though. Maybe the European team running it ran out of 2002 parts and had to use somebody else's older spares.

So my broad guess is that the 1999 cars had engine air and brake cooling in what would be considered the stock locations, the 2000 car moved the engine air to hose new ducts and the brake cooling to the "engine" ducts, and the 2002 cars likely shifted the air restrictor intakes to the splitter beside the rad ducts and they added some secondary brake ducts or something to the outer splitter in 2004.

This shot from '06 would line up with all of that anyways, although in 2002 they had carbon ducts running down from the air restrictors rather than long hoses.

DTM had to run them 6000km between changes and Le Mans these days is in the low 5000s. Super GT's total race weekend running for the season is around 5000km and they do get one engine change without penalty, but I don't know how testing figures in. I don't think it's a big issue though, these aren't sprint racing engines as such. Not much is anymore, even F1 engines do a few thousand kilometers these days.

As the second largest business in the same industry IndyCar is intrinsically involved in whether NASCAR is an unlawful monopoly. That IndyCar is realistically the only other professional motor racing organization in America of any stature alone and does so just by having one single valuable asset to bargain with is pretty questionable to begin with. It's pretty much impossible to have a sports car breakaway series anymore because NASCAR now owns or politically influences all the other tracks that IMSA made a series out of last time.

Seeing as how they have effectively frozen IndyCar out of a lot of tracks, I can see an argument being made that NASCAR has negatively affected the IndyCar market. They would rather let tracks rot than give IndyCar an event. Yet another bit of evidence that they would rather let it burn than share a single dime, even if it made them a dollar.

I recommend reserving a parking space online, it should be optional with the admission ticket.
I prefer the yellow area on the north side near the Eau Rouge, it's maybe 10 minutes of walking to the entrance and it's very beautiful and practical, there was a lot of space last time I went there for the WEC 6 hour despite having a record admittance.

As for general tips, I recommend picking a spot on the Eau Rouge at least 2 hours before the race. It's the best spot for the race start, and they have nice food and beverages for decent prices. Then you can travel along the track. The Kemmel straight, Pouhon and Blanchinont were my favorite places to isle, and maybe bring a compact foldable chair for maximum comfiness.

Spa was for me the cleanest racing experience I've ever had, everything was super clean and tidy and without a shred of garbage anywhere.

For comparison, Nürburgring on the other hand was a lot messier and livelier, but of course it's a completely different beast of a racing track.
