have a look into the 'shared space' movement. a lot of towns and villages in england and scandinavia have completely done away with lane markings, signage, signals, curbs etc. the idea is that stripping all that stuff away creates uncertainty forcing people to negotiate the area through eye contact and social cues. basically interacting with each other as humans not relying on being in the right because of subclause 3 of act b of section 19a of the traffic code or whatever.
studies into it have shown meaningful reductions in accidents and while traffic slows car users actually see a reduction in travel time as they don't get stuck at lights or in traffic jams as traffic tends to constantly flow, just at a slower pace. plus it looks far more aesthetic imo.
