Catchers are always overrated in rankings because any catchie who can hit a little they think is elite because most catchers suck, but they usually end up not being able to hit too. Also prospects rankings by team and Salas being Padres #2 is irrelevant because their farm sucks and his ranking is going to tank hard soon anyways because his stock has cratered and he has a chronic back issue already at 20 which is real bad for a catcher who squats and bends 3 hours a day.

You’re right though you probably could have gotten something for those earlier in the offseason but Preller out priced everyone wanting Cease because he sucks.

Yeah that’s why Salas was so highly rated. He was extremely advanced defensively for his age at C and he could hit too. In the low minors which doesn’t mean much. But they get sky high prospect rankings every time anyways. Most of them fail or become light hitting backup C types that are a diamond dozen. Salas has lost almost all luster. That’s why Preller is so eager to dump him.
