The team that is fielding doesn't want the batting team to get any runners on base. 4 balls and the runner advances to first automatically, 3 strikes and he's out. Calling a strike right down the middle as a ball is egregiously bad and helps the batting team at the expense of the fielding team, which is why the pitcher and catcher were irritated.

The count was 1-0 (1 ball, no strikes) before the pitch and should have gone to 1-1 after a strike, but it became 2-0, which is a harder count to work for the pitcher and a little more advantageous for the batter.

Btw if the ball is outside the strike zone and the batter swings at it and misses, it should be a called strike too

>>150022553
Umps are heavily influenced by a catcher's body language, perhaps to an absurd degree. The art of finessing your movements to make it appear that a ball that's outside the zone is actually in is called "framing". Well this catcher did the absolute worst framing to help his cause possible by shuffling so far to the side that he had to reach out his arm for something down the middle.

I like baseball its fun to watch and bet a cheeky euro on but I despise one rule in baseball - the intentional walks. There should be a tradeoff on that, if you take advantage of an intentional walk you should penalized like the batter going 0-1 or the opposing team also gets 2 free bases if they are batting next.

I don't see how the batting team can "take advantage" of being intentionally walked when they have no control over it. If anything the defending team should be punished and the next batter should start with 1 or 2 balls in the count.
But even then, that can't be enforced because rather than using the automatic IBB system pitchers will just go back to throwing 4 bad balls out of the zone and can claim they just lost control.

That is not even the most bizarre part of this sport. It is also so insanely random that each team needs to play 162 matches per season just so they have enough data do determine the best teams to play the PLAYOFFS. Plate umpiring is fucking hard. It's not something you can practice hard at and be perfect. I miss the human aspect that we lost with instant replay, and I'll miss it more when balls/strikes are automated. The cosmic background radiation of random shit that happens over 162 games is what makes baseball baseball, and that includes blown calls. Players fuck up, umpires fuck up, arguments and ejections are had, but in the end it basically evens out because the season is so long.

Also, who gives a fuck about fans. I don't care if some roastie two rows ahead of me is more interested in Facebook, why would you?

While it's not so extreme, Soto is the one taking advantage of the rules here, where's the line? I don't think it's fair that Soto gets to benefit from a significantly smaller strike zone just because he happens to have a more crouched stance than nearly every other player

casuals put way too much stake in the batter box on the TV screen. The StrikeZone is a 3d object that occupies the space above home plate. just because the ball is one place when it is caught behind home plate does not mean that it isn't clipping the front edge of the strike zone as it breaks. it's the batter's fault for standing near the back of the box

Easy fix: Make it so the pitcher steps back after every batter miss.

Best fix: Turn this shit into a live game with 10 batters and 10 pitchers from each side running around the field all at the same time

I do baseball at a reasonable level (high school and JUCO). Balls and strikes aren't easy. Weirdly it gets easier to call when the pitches are high 80s and up. Don't know why.

I've heard from multiple officials that basketball is the hardest and volleyball is braindead easy.

Players have done that before where a pitcher throws at an umpire and the catcher "accidentially" misses the pitch, but it is pretty hard to play it out convincingly as a true accident, especially if it is right after a questionable or flat out incorrect call by that same ump. The pkayer will also get instantly tossed from the game, suspended, and fined, as well as being grilled by the media reporters about it, and being called exrremely tight with zero leeway by every other umpire from now until the day they retire.

the point is actually to make it harder to rig when the ABS (automatic ball strike) system implemented
it will likely be a challenge system. ump is still going to call balls and strikes like normal but players can challenge the call. not having the box appear immediately on any broadcasts will make it harder for teams to somehow relay information to the players to challenge. the challenge has to be done within a couple of seconds of the pitch though so I don't think rigging is a huge concern. I think MLB is more concerned about a potential lack of suspense when a call is challenged. if the broadcast had already shown what the result will be.
