It's a mostly fair balance: players generally respect contracts but also have the bargaining chips of leaving on free, tanking their value, dressing room and fan friction etc. if the club gets too stubborn. Martyn Ziegler recently reported on a legal case which could establish an option for players to literally walk away from a contract at any point for free. Effectively abolishing transfer fees, turning all players into mercenaries and clubs into 'Murican-style franchises. Obviously that's an extreme case, but loyalty is a massive part of football. Players should be bound to their clubs in a way that they can't just randomly decide to rip up mid-contract like Isak is trying to do. Players owe clubs for their growth and development as much as clubs owe players.

That is controversial, reminds me of the people that claimed the only reason we are not playing (or qualifying) for the Champions League is because Xhaka is a starter.
