I have two engineering degrees and it was a good investment when I earned them in the 90s. Today? That's not very clear. Other than some projects with expensive equipment, there's little that I learned in college that today couldn't be learned independently. It also appears that the "college experience" has significantly been degraded. The only "good" thing is housing quality has hugely improved but you're also paying far more. My crappy large one bedroom apartment was $350/month. Also you can see the different regions are unequal in size since the US is an irregular shape; the NE quadrant is clearly smaller than the NW for example. Regardless what makes a state southern isn't entirely geography, its also cultural and historical. The concept of The South and The North developed before most of the states existed. That's why the Midwest is viewed as distinct from the North, and no one considers California a southern state or Idaho a northern state instead being viewed as western states.
If we go purely on geography there is no reason to ignore Alaska or Hawaii either so the mid point would be near where the borders of Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota meet. That would make schools like Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn St, and Army acceptable for the SEC.
