I live in a city with a decently run, decently popular USL Championship team and the answer is not really, the college teams are more popular and much more tied in with the identity of being from here. But the USL still gets an attendance of like 8-10k and local sponsorships which is probably enough to pay the guys idk math teacher money and run the thing profitably, and it hasn't really been around that long so it will get less "plastic" over time.
I follow them very casually, like I'll go to games sometimes just because it's nice out and the stadium is a bike ride away from me. I would struggle to name more than a few of the players.
I think the whole enterprise has more in common with US minor league sports (family friendly, good game day experience with stuff like food/drink, minimal attachment to the team unless you are a weird capo who sings) than anything abroad. I would like to see it eventually build up to promotion-relegation with the MLS but I understand why that would never get buy-in from MLS team owners
