I don't rate Johto games as a whole, it's a very beautiful region but the games are highly overrated. There's very little variety of Pokémon until late mid game and once you're done with the Johto region, the Kanto one feels way too rushed.
I still hold it dear because of nostalgia but it doesn't hold a candle to the other games I mentioned

Yeah but that's the thing, if I want to run a more focused Johto team I have very little options which somehow makes sense since many Gen2 pokemons were supposed in Gen1.
BW/BW2 also suffer from lack of variety of pokemons early on but at least they compensate by having by 80% gen5 dex
