Plastic zombies, the old monkey clan rats, the hunch back chaos warriors (less so, it has good parts and isn't too hard to fix), and to an extent the high elf infantry are unacceptably bad kits, and for the armies where they're really the only option and there are no good alternative plastic kits out there, I would never even consider making the army.

Looking at the Grand Cathay army roster it says they can take mercenaries, so they should be able to take Badland Ogres, but the Old World army builder doesn't let them. It looks like it's a mistake on the army builder's part, but I'm just wondering if there's something I'm missing in either the ogre bull's mercenary rules or Cathay's that means they can't actually take them.

Total: 1998pts and OK for the new matched play rules. The idea is to just play keep away with the flying units forever and use the combined +/-3 to ambush rules from the 3 Sky Lanterns to just never bring on the big Jade Lancer unit until the very end of the game to deny your enemy 412pts because they can never kill it. But if you have to commit it, you'll pretty much be able to choose when and it isn't a bad unit by itself forcing Terror tests at -1Ld.

I bought the original metal Goblin Hewer with Malakai back in 2009. I still have the whole crew, but for some reason I lost most of the parts for the machine. Now that I have the recast I could give it a metal baseplate, one of the few parts I have left of the original.
You can really tell which one of these pairs was painted by a teenager towards the tail end of the 7th ed, and which one by an adult slurping the oldhammer kool-aid and juggling between six different races to break up the monotony of it all. Anyway, they turned out quite nicely, I just wish I had noticed that egregious seamline beforehand.

financially its a decent value and will get you started in the game quickly, but having just built and painted it, i have to say, the dwarf warrior and quarrelers are VERY dated, they have titanic mold slips across the helmets which require heavy knifework to correct, the torso bits line up terribly and leave huge gaps, there are weird flat draft angles on the cloaks just sort of blending them into the legs and chain mail, the warriors and quarrelers each only have like 4 bodies with 6 heads and you just get like 8 of each sprue. one nice feature though is that the torsos and faces are pretty much interchangable between the two kits. just be aware that if you want two handed gun/crossbow poses, only a few of the quarreler bodies have the correct arm positions for it, as the arms for that pose are moulded into the body

copters look good, a bit fiddly to build. im not personally a fan of copter gameplay but given the armies complete lack of cavalry they kind of depend on them.

i would really recommend getting a box of hammerers and/or irondrakes alongside the battalion, as that will give you spare shields, weapons, arms, banners and so on from those kits to spruce up your models with a bit more flair.

the box gives you a ton of dudes so it is a good way to quickly bulk out a force, but the units in it arent really the star units for dwarfs (without converting) and the infantry kits are definitely showing their age

i dont regret getting it, but you'll need to put in some elbow grease to get them to look good.

My list, brets, was centered around a 15 man lance with bsb, duke and damsel (illusion, familiar, and sword of stout hearted). I also had a baron on griff with monster slayer virtue. Also pegs, grails, questing, bowmen, 25 men at arms.

His list was blorc on wyvern + ng lvl4 and then a spread of units, boys, blorcs, hoppers, trolls, a giant, boars, ng archers.

It's a monkeys paw situation but doesn't mean you can't make the best of it, nothing wrong with the models really and you can headcanon lore or avoid units you don't like. I'd expect Kislevs overtuning to be for the cavalry, getting crazy charge bonuses and such. They don't have much range to play around with in the first place, shortbows have to be very cheap to be good, a hybrid unit like strelski will be too pricy to be gunline viable and big grom is only ever going to be a rare and expensive choice. I guss bear sleds could be a nuisance but nothing on the level of the sky lanterns. They'll probably even have impetuous or something.
