Working on a space opera where "Elves" appear in the distant future. They're very obviously like Earth's concept of Elves--and not even the mythological ones, but like pop culture Elves. Their distant hidden homeworlds are all named shit like Atlantis and Avalon and Agartha and Thule. It's an obvious psyop, they're almost certainly some kind of shapeshifters trying to trick humans into liking them, but they're good allies (so far) so everyone just goes with it.

Working up to do a rangers of shadowdeep playthrough, either solo or at the club if I can find interested parties so that will obviously have elves as the player characters

I'm also looking to continue working on these napoleonic elves, basically just a hobby project thus far but I have some ideas about maybe trying out sharpe practice with them eventually. Next step now will be getting some cavalry done.

Finished up a small dark elf fleet for man'o'war too recently, pretty fun if overpowered faction.

My elves are spit into three main types from the original civilization.
First (or High I suppose) are the original royal family. They have the best lands, the best castles and the most kickass magic. They are THE original civilization on planet and with the research they have done on the variety of artifacts that litter the continent could be compared to the Asari from mass effect. They're still crippled by the rebellion of....
The Banished (or Dark Elves if it helps) who were the noble families of the original civilization. All the intrigue at court finally got to them and 80% of the noble families and their retainers etc decided that they could do a better job and started a massive civil war. They were 'winning' their way straight into defeat (through massive casualties) when they created the Orcs who turned the tide in favour of the Banished... and then ate shit when the orcs managed to rebel and bug out with the help of....
The Wild Elves (Wood elves) who are the largest of the three faction and represent the common man and woman of the elves. The commoners/civilians took one look at the conflict they were getting forcibly drafted for (to both sides) and said 'fuck that' and helped the orcs rebel to get both of them out from under the heels of the other two. Unfortunately as soon as they were established they promptly balkanized and are busy skirmishing with each other and kind of act like back country hicks... except every tree has ten bows in it if you start antagonizing them.

All three are regional powers and the war between the First and the Banished is still simmering away thousands of years later.
There is a fourth group of elves... technically... but its almost better to say that they were made/manufactured rather than being born. They exist in self imposed exile on an island but they cannot suppress the wanderlust that occasionally gets a few of them and they escape to the mainland where usually it doesn't end well for them.

In my setting there is a chain of volcanic/jungle islands where one of the elven cultures lives. The villages and port towns have contact with humans and are relaxed safe places with a strong trade economy. The jungles are kept dangerous intentionally so that their warriors don't lose their edge and to keep outsiders away from sacred groves. The men mainly hunt and fight with spears and everyone wears hand made patterned clothing. This sub-race of elves does not live as long as high elves or wood elves.

The wood elves live in a massive old growth forest on the central continent. They have the largest population of any of the elven cultures. They are isolationist and militaristic. Their borders are guarded by "ranger companies" that surround anyone who enters their forest. Their movement is masked by strong gusts of wind blowing you away from their territory. They will appear all around you on the branches of trees wielding bows and wearing armor, hand crafted wooden masks, and swirling green cloaks.

It's magic that you have to roll a saving throw to resist. You would have to have extremely high perception to see or hear them before they wanted you to. mechanically they just really high level. The two times my players encountered them they were too low level to resist their demands. They basically showed up and told the party to fuck off and so they did.

>>96094447
The high elves are a nearly extinct race of conquerors. They are the progenitors of all elven kind and can live indefinitely. when they become extremely old they become mentally unstable. Their whole culture has fallen from a globe spanning empire to just a handful of warlords because of their descent madness.

Not in the current game. We have a dwarf and 4 humans. If we started the campaign at low level and they wanted to be a wood elf then they wouldn't be able to be member of a ranger company. They would just be some elf from the general population of wood elves. Being a Ranger is basically like being a highly trained member of the military.

Strong thematic and narrative core while still being extremely flexible, which shows when you look at how different elves can be from setting to setting.
Their abilities and strengths almost always make them fun characters to play, and yet still flexible enough to not be confined to a niche.
In their respective settings, they are often very important figures, especially in the settings past, having done all manners of great and terrible deeds, laying down the foundation on how the world is in the present shape.

The Vinland Saga and Erik the Red is an interesting tale. And yes, you could farm on the coast of Greenland at some point. Which is where it got the name from. They discovered the continent, found green shores, and called it Greenland.
There is this idea that people called Iceland this inhospitable name, because they wanted less people to come over. Which isn't entirely true. But apparently, the first settlers had a hard time in Iceland and just saw snow and glaciers, which is where it got its name from.

>Night City
>Nightclub owned by European Goldenkids (I don't remember the name and I haven't Eurosource manual under my hands), exotics called the "Elves" due to their pointed ears and other tons of faishonware.
>Chit-chat says Elves are rich bastards that live in complete decadence, arriving to make blood bath for upgrading their secret cyberware. Secret Cyberware by Biotechnica and other Euro Corporations to guarantee a infinite youth and alluring body.
>The German Not!Cyber!Olga is the mistress of the Night Club, dressed with skimpy latex clothes, dominant allure. (Not!Cyber!Chloe is her bodyguard an half-Philippine-Dutch girl. Not!Cyber!Mail is a young bounty hunter from Glasgow... and go on...)
>The Nightclub has a decadent allure with slow and hypnotic music, tons of candles those release a light hallucinogen drug, marble statues in Neo-Classical Status, giant harps and cellos shaped like naked man and women, private rooms where the decadence arrives to high levels between orgies or bloody rites.
>These rich and annoyed elves are involved in shady activities (smuggling of illegal cyberware; trafficking of people abducted from the Combat Zone and reduced as slaves through drugs or brian impants; smuggling of hallucinogen drugs; backdoor for shady activities from Eurocorps like Biotechnica and Ubermensch). However, they sell an buy gossip and information because knowledge is everything.

Greenland settlements were abandoned by scandinavians in the 1400s IIRC, but Iceland was self-sustaining. You can still farm and keep livestock even if it's a very poor yield if you do it for sustenance and of course Icelanders would fish a lot.

Obviously the farm would be more successful if you kept the farmstead elf happy as well, and fail miserably if you pissed him off

they absolutely are, I've been wanting to do a space opera with elves divided up into subraces depending on how far from the mainline "high" elves they've colonized.
So you got the really ancient high elf civilization, then younger and younger elf civilizations depending on how far from the high elf home system you go.

Of course I don't really like monocultures so I haven't really gotten a gimmick for the different types of elves except that they look different and their major states have different political standpoints depending on culture and their galactic neighbors.

Genned pic related as a member of one of the younger elf types (only a thousand or so years old) that are still expansionists and settle new planets, with or without previous inhabitants which tends to put them into conflict with various other species

It's an npc. The party mostly grew up in a guild and they had others in their "class" so I've gotten art of their guild mates for when they show up across the campaign doing their own stuff as their own parties. I give a big quest board of quests for the player party to pick from, then I take the rest of the quests and do some rolls to see how other hero parties did trying to complete them.
IE one of the first boards had a high-challenge quest the party decided to not take so I had one of their class-mate parties take it on and they ended up barely surviving.

NTA, but Half-elf is the perfect race for a Forgotten Realms edgelord. Pure elves think you are an abomination. Humans are generally suspicious of elves. If you grow up in a human society, your childhood friends grow faster than you. If you grow up in an elven society, you outgrow your childhood friends. Alone and with a society that rejects you, the half-elf has no choice but to become a mercenary that takes any job because they don't care about their own life. I like this aesthetic. Playing too much steamband once gave me the idea for a setting where every race was fey, and they were in a france-like country (Ys) eternally flung into a warring-states/american-civil-war like conflict, where innacurate guns and sharp sabers decided who would unify the land as a military leader. But then my group broke up before we could play it.

Pretty sure, the only group that had zero elves was the one where the GM forced everyone to roll their characters entirely. For supposedly making up 2% of the players, they sure are popular. At this point, could understand if a GM wants to no elves in his party, for balance or narrative reasons.

"Fey knights" are a cool concept, but never thought about fey cuirassiers.
There was this weird manga, fictional 18th century setting, no blackpowder but instead fey creatures were used to shoot rifles. Military-focused, stopped reading for some reason when these fey creatures and some magical shenanigans were hinted to be the center of the conflict.

Color me interested. What sucks is that none of my friends (me included) are history buffs enough to make a setting that's anything but window dressing. That's usually enough for us, I wing it and they don't care, but it would be nice to have a more involved setting for once.
In my conception I thought of something like "Oberon's dead, no legitimate heirs are there, first to get through Titania's royal guard becomes king", and then players would form their warband trying to survive a very chaotic battle royale of adventuring parties involved in not!napoleonic warfare and three musketeers swashbuckling.

They'll have a hard time getting guns. The region they started the campaign in is heavilly involved in an ongoing conflict against skaven. The rats burned their original settlement to the ground and killed their mentor. The human wizard eventually dabbled into dark magic earning the party a one way trip to fringe outlawness. One npc gave them the info a bunch of rogues and scoundrels formed their own city by the south, and they went there searching for a place where they can be respected despite walking with undead. They haven't earned the respect of the city of criminals yet, so the price gouging in the black market makes firearms not viable, and they can't otherwise buy through less criminally inclined avenues, or they'll get caught by inquisitors for harboring a dark magic practicioner.

I remember the MC being really cool. A rare case of a believable womanizer in a manga. It's just 32 chapters, might as well binge it.
Line infantry seems really to be the anti-thesis of elves. Saying that, I know Napoleon had a different approach, with more compact and maneuverable infantry units. Still think elves would have a different approach to gunpowder weapons than "shoot at the general direction, hope to not get hit". Riflemen back then were famously inaccurate, they didn't even bother learning how to aim.
Anonymous No.96102505 [Report]

Cool, it's short and has nice visuals, I'll give it a try.
I'm thinking of way more inaccurate firearms and way more fragmented factions. I was going to run this on 4e, reskinning long range spells to just be different types of magical ammo, and races to all be different types of fey. Elves are usually calm and collected, but what I pictured is that, with Oberon's death, they'd be in a frenzy to get to Titania. So you wouldn't find groups much larger than 10 soldiers, because since only the general will actually bed the queen, he needs to be charismatic/respected/strong enough that each of his soldiers would rather not fight him or mutiny than actually trying to become the king themselves. Napoleon may have moved a country of French people to war, but you need more than that to shackle a bunch of horny fey to your own hornyness.

>Line infantry seems really to be the anti-thesis of elves
I don't know. Well drilled infantry in tight formation is pretty common for (high) elves. That's exactly what you want when firearms start appearing since it gives you massive firepower. If anything elves would be leading the firepower race as other races struggled to raise regiments of the same quality and having to keep them safe with more pike longer.

Perhaps other types of elves would not be found in tight firing lines though. Wood elves that have advanced civilizations that thrive in thick forests were linear battle formations are impractical could perhaps instead use well drilled skirmishers instead since they're never going to receive tightly packed shocks anyway.

Dark elves living underground would perhaps develop incredibly defensive tactics and extremely aggressive shock units to make the best use out of the constant chokepoints in their caves.

Like in real life it's environment, geography, society, technology, economy, government etc. that determines what warfare looks like. It flows downriver

>>96104829
>since it gives you massive firepower
Debatable, rate of fire for bows is higher and many armies in Asia have used bows next to guns. It's a very western European thing to ditch other types of missile weapons for rifles.
>as other races struggled to raise regiments of the same quality
My point is that these types of troops were of poor quality (for the most part), basically being carried by the weapon alone. An elf guy being taught for a weak how to reload a rifle while barely caring about shooting straight is not elfish, is not a good use of their skill and long lifespans. If elves embrace gunpowder weapons, then they would train themselves to hit and place good shots.
>Perhaps other types of elves would not be found in tight firing lines though
Agreed. The usual high elf type, if not just wood elves but more civilized, would probably field more cavalry. To me, cuirassiers and dragoons seem like a much more reasonable use of a population with (relatively) small numbers but high skill, and also of comparatively high wealth. Lots of assumptions here, but you get the idea.
Not to say that there aren't advantages of compact formations and volley fire, so they would absolutely have line formation troops to some degree. You also need someone to stop the opponent from catching your artillery.

Also, the argument about elves fighting in tight formations in some setting doesn't quite compare due to the nature of line infantry warfare. Casualties tend to be relatively low, even for infantry on the front. But I do believe having read that the new age warfare has led to really high casualties. Often, soldiers would just stand and get hit over and over. For an elfish individual with the prospect of a long life, this seems, from a psychological perspective, to be a net negative. Line infantry would only make sense for their most badass (and who get the best pay).
Anonymous No.96105252 [Report] >>96110500
>>96105092
Although, thinking about this for a bit more, line infantry could still be more of a reaction and adaption to battlefield conditions than a deliberate choice. Enemy cavalry would be able to route skirmishers easily, but compact formations are better suited to fend them off. So it depends on what the opponent fields.
But I will still maintain that elfish infantry would at least train differently, better. With the purpose to hit, not just shoot into a general direction (but the smoke caused by gunpowder would be a detriment here). Maybe they end up having a slower rate of fire, but higher kill chance per shot. Helps with ammo conservation, I guess.

I think Coran right here was noted to be quite chubby (for an elf) at some point.
Tolkien calls his elves slender, though it's difficult to say how much of that is the result of them simply not eating too much, or if it's entirely biological.
That's in general a question for many settings. If all the elves are slender, is this nature or nurture?

pure gunfire engagement weren't decisive because of the poor accuracy and training until proper breach-loaded rifled guns were issued on masse and even then close assaults were important.
For earlier periods a charge would generally be necessary to break the enemy after the initial volley or volleys had disorganized them enough to make it less dangerous to charge right into their firing line. Indeed some armies only fired their muskets once at extremely close range or during the final few meters of the charge to maximize shock.

Lol, mine are first time RPers, the second necro guy rolled doubles and got himself a nasty play-date with the warp he asked to spend XP on a dark lore. Since I've handwaved a lot of the more complicated bookkeeping aspects of the game, and balanced encounters to be winnable more than realistic, they actually managed to level up quite a bit. I'm thinking of, if they manage to stop the ancient catastrophe inhabiting the ruins the thieves build their city ontop of, give them the prestige adventurers of their caliber should deserve, and maybe go a more rogue trader route with some military campaigns where they each get a bunch of subordinates to control too, kinda like if WFRP was a wargame (now THAT's a wild idea ain't it?). Maybe they can manage independence from the empire, maybe they get autonomy to rule over a more rules-lax region, will depend a lot if the empire finds out about necromancer dude or if he'll be able to even survive.
I'll say that, GMing for a dark lore user in WFRP is fun AF, I hardly have to create amusement for myself because the baroque dilemma on my player's face whether to solve it with magic or not is already too fun. One time after a battle he was borderline dying, and they were out of supplies, but he had a spell that can suck nether energy out of fresh cadavers to heal himself magically. He rolled 3 fucking times to heal, all of the rolls were doubles which meant he did heal himself, but the magical mishaps made him lose health too so his net gain was less than 20% his hp back. I eventually ruled he was stabilized and wouldn't die, but at low hp, and he called it a day and decided that trying to survive on like 4/13hp was more feasible than healing himself safely around his also injured party.

My elves are more akin to nephilim/Thamud/antediluvian humans. Like Tolkien but instead of sinless pre-fall humans, they are the mighty yet corrupted giants among men (not literally giant). Instead of being a seperate race, they are ancestors to humanity, but their civilisations have collapsed long ago, their numbers are few in the modern age, and they are dying out.
Centuries of life is centuries of experience, so an Elf blacksmith is the pinnacle of his field, but an Elf drunkard or drug addict barely looks human, his body warped and destroyed by his vices and unable to die of old age.
There are arrogant High Elves who cling to their ancient glories and shepherd humanity from the shadows because humans are stupid children who need a guiding hand. Dark Elves consort with demons, view humans as degenerated failures and rule brutal slave empires as a divine aristocracy, and Wood Elves who reject the vices and decadence that brought their old empires down and have returned to monke.
Anonymous No.96111885 [Report]
>>96111733
high elves live in cities, wood elves live in rural places, dark elves probably also live in cities both above and below ground.
Would make sense for high elves and dark elves to be in conflict since they live in the same places.

I still think they should generally be at least a bit reserved towards each other since they might view each other as equals since they're all elves, but since they have different core values they might look down on the other types for getting it all wrong. Expand this to more uncommon extremes at either end with some groups being in open conflict and some being pretty united.
Neat thing about values and culture is that it doesn't have to change with technology. Holy wars can be fought with assault rifles and tanks just as well as swords and lances

The entire setting is largely biotech based, so the elf dudes are not sole practioners of using biotechnology, however they are the best at it, largely because they are the remnands of the ruling caste of the civilization of the setting.
Their suits of armor for example are living symbiotic organisms that they wear as a basicaly a second layer of muscle and skin over their bodies.

The setting itself is a sort of colossal megacity composed of largely organic and biomechanical infrastructure and massive ecological habitats and what not, that after a millenia of civil war has been mostly reduced to overgrown ruins, with the remaining more intact districts housing the remnants of civilization within the Cityscape itself.

Thanks! The biotech stuff is kind of the core identity of the setting, as it's first iterations we're sort of just "meat world/dogscape" or scorn style biological horror stuff we're everything was just made out of living materials and it's inhabitants were just mutated freaks. Over time, as I refined the setting I ended up humanizing the denizens a lot, but the foundational biotech element remained.

For example, the "Baryxians" becoming so elf like was not something I initially set out to do, it was more of a consequence of me having a specific idea in mind for the look of their armor, tall, elegant, long climbed and rather sleek, that started to influence the requirements for the proportions of the dudes wearing the armor, making them look elongated and thin, which at least to me partially pushed them towards elf like vibes. Once I was, creatively speaking, caught in the gravity of the elven aesthetics for the Baryxians I kinda felt that just embracing the look and vibe rather than fighting against it was a better move, and it was not hard to justify im universe either, as genetic engineering of humanity and life in general is a big part of the setting anyways.

Incorrect. Modern anime doesn't take inspiration from Lodoss War, they take inspiration from MMOs and other isekai, which none of them count as real fantasy genres. That's why every single one of these anime have the adventure's guild, stats, mana, and other concepts which don't really belong in a fantasy story but in an MMO game.
