I just finished reading dawn of fire: the silent king.

While I like that It neatly connects all of Haley's plots from the previous books I think it shows what I would call a disjunction in whatever body GW uses to write the lore.

It annoys me how the "major" plots of the setting keep jumping about with not rhyme or reason and the timeline keeps shifting.
Haley started off the new 8th edition era with the dark imperium books, set 112 years after the fall of cadia, but they then retconned it to 12 years later in the Dawn of Fire series.
The fight against chaos then gets sidelined in the 9th edition when the necrons get introduced, which gets sidelined again in favour of the Tyranids in the 10th.
Now the storyline is back to fighting the necrons and leading directly into the dark imperium novels.
The novel Belisarius Cawl: the great work again fucks it up since it occurs after the dark imperium books(but before the trilogy was finished) with Cawl fidgeting with necron shit again.
All these novels and plot points must have been written far in advance of their release so why the fuck is it so schizophrenic? I'm not even sure now where the blood angels and Lion/Vashtorr plotline fits into this
Wouldn't it be better to release dawn of fire with the release of the 8th, explaining how the indomitus crusade started, and the trouble with the necrons, then release dark imperium when indomitus ends, THEN go with the release of 10th and the new war against the Tyranids?

As I've said in the last thread even game fluff is disjointed by the strange release schedule
What interests me the most is that we know for a fact that models created long before they are actually released and so is the plotline.

So why the fuck is it still so disjointed?

>The fight against chaos then gets sidelined in the 9th edition when the necrons get introduced, which gets sidelined again in favour of the Tyranids in the 10th.
It wasn't sidelined, you idiot.
The Necrons starred in the start of 9th ED but they were cast aside very fast with the majority of campaign books focusing on Chaos and 9th ED ending with Arks of Omen which was a Chaos fest. Necrons didn't get much content in 9th ed past the start of the edition.
It's the same again with the Tyranids. They starred in the start of 10th edition but then disappeared, with Chaos being the focus again.
>Now the storyline is back to fighting the necrons and leading directly into the dark imperium novels.
Oh god. The fucking novel was filler. It's outcome was revealed months ago in a small paragraph in "Crusade: Pariah Nexus".

>I'm not even sure now where the blood angels and Lion/Vashtorr plotline fits into this

DoB happens shortly after the Plague Wars. Arks of Omen happens during and slightly after the Plague Wars.

>Wouldn't it be better to release dawn of fire with the release of the 8th, explaining how the indomitus crusade started, and the trouble with the necrons, then release dark imperium when indomitus ends, THEN go with the release of 10th and the new war against the Tyranids?
Idiot, GW reversed their plans for the setting that they set in place in 8th ed.

The original plan was to create a timeline of roughly 100 years between the Fall of Cadia and the end of the Plague Wars, then fill it with events and releases. GW realized that it was a shit way of doing things since it killed all the hype so they rewrote the setting to be just a decade or so after the Fall of Cadia and adopted the dynamic storytelling of AoS for 40K.

I play Deathwatch and I really dont think Deathwatch is more popular than Eldar, one of the most popular factions. I would say they are pretty even with Harles this edition considering we have both been squatted.

Deathwatch getting their index back was nice of GW, and its sad Harles didnt get that. But Eldar as a whole is one of the pillars of GW while Deathwatch has one of the lowest playrates of any marine faction and they filter new hobbyists by being twice as expensive because you cant make marines deathwatch without the upgrade sprue (and normies dont buy bulk recasts of it to make hobbying easier)

A SoS novel all about them without any 'stodes taking the spotlight, or any bananas at all.
A routine tithe pick up for a Blackship that rapidly goes south from a non-chaos rebellion would be great. Show the imperium in its full shades of grey, explore the PDF and local bureaucracy, the operation of the Blackships, the sisters working in an almost villainous role which is their regular duties.
You could even have SoS reinforcements from a formerly underground cadre, and go into how the sisters that remained in the Imperium drank the imperial dogma kool-aid where's the one that went to ground still are atheists, and rather bitter about the Imperium at large.

That's what happened with fourk. You'd have one guy who wants primaris in it, and one guy who doesn't. One guy thinks votann are fine the other thinks they don't work. One guy thinks every unit after 4th edition shouldn't be added, other argue what the point of having a homebrew based on 4th if it's just 4th. It's impossible to have a widely accepted homebrew because people will just go "Well if it doesn't have my favorite unit in it the what's the point" or will go "this ruleset doesn't have my favorite unit in it, I'm just going to make my own ruleset instead.

How are Custodes doing in 10e? What are the big winners and loser among their units?
I got a Battleforce box and a Combat Patrol box ages ago but I finally have time to start working on them. It means I have:
>1x Shield-Captain (the ugly one)
>5x Custodian Guards
>5x Custodian Wardens
>6x Allarus Custodians
>9x Vertus Praetors
>10x Sisters of Silence
>1x extra Contemptor Dreadnought
>1x extra Rhino
It seems that I have all Custodes plastic kits beside Trajann Valoris and a Blade Champion. Is the spread good for building a decent list? Should I actually get rid of 3 Vertus Praetors and buy a Trajann or more Custodian Guard perhaps? Fielding more than 6 bikes feels crazy, I still remember them being game-breaking years ago.

Yeah it's a full-kit, the sprue has multiples of everything. For a unit of 10, you can have two heavy weapons (Mining Laser, Seismic Cannon, Heavy Stubber), two special weapons (grenade launcher, webber, flamer), 1 cult icon to revive dead models, and the rest with autoguns. You can only have one of each weapon so there's that. You used to be able to field 4 mining lasers in a unit of 20, now I run 2 mining lasers, 2 seismic, 2 webbers, 2 grenade launchers.
Some people take Heavy Stubber instead of a mining laser to wipe out infantry, because you can have 6 attacks with sustained hits and lethal hits and critting on 5+ and it adds up quickly but I lack anti-tank so decided to use Mining Laser. The 12 autoguns with 24 attacks do a lot already. I built the leader with small webber and power weapon because I like it's look but if you're going for min-maxing, give him an autogun.

So uh
How does splitting units work with Strat Reserves?
If I have an Archon, Court and 5 Kabalites in a raider and 5 Kabalites in a venom, does the game count it as (85+95+50+75) in reserves for 305 total or does it also include the full cost of the Kabalites?
If I have both start in reserves, is the unit counted twice?

What's the reasoning here
were they finding that building and painting a vehicle was too much of an ask for new players?
Did market research find that less combat partrols were fully finished when a tank was present in the kit and new players gave up too quickly
Did they find it easier to balance infantry only lists for combat patrol games
Is it too much of a revenue loss to include vehicles in Combat Patrol Boxes
Will the combat patrol boxes centre around a new gamemode that's infantry only

Host of Ascension detachment gives you ignores cover and sustained hits one when you come from strategic reserves, and everything except for vehicles have deep strike army wide. You get a Primus, which gives full rerolls to hit and give him Chink in their Armor enhancement for giving his unit Lethal Hits when they come from reserves. You pair that up with Primed and Readied strategem, go crit on 5+. Now you have a big unit of 20 neophyes with lethal hits and sustained hits 1, full rerolls and ignores cover. You hit a target with a Ridgerunner to give your Neophytes AP1, and they just slaughter shit. If your opponent shoots at them, you can put the remaining models in strategic reserves again to repeat the same stuff. The cult icon to bring dead models back work when the unit is in reserves so you can bring up to 3 models while in reserves as well.
That being said they're expensive for a unit of 65pts, a slog to paint because even your most basic guy is full of details that have no easy means of painting. I've seen 2000pts lists that run 80 or more of them so good luck. I painted 40 of them and I'm done, and I have 30 more on sprue.
