Problem with the GSC are there aren't any decent discount boxes available right now and this is a serious issue given how expensive the army is otherwise. You really do need Neophytes and Acolytes and only the acolytes are included in the new combat patrol.
For the ribbing I'm using Tamiya's black panel liner after applying some umber wash from Vallejo and it looks good enough for the most part. I'm not a fan of contrast type paints so that's up to you. I primed the first batch in white and I don't recommend it, like I've said there are too many details and I still see some mistakes or areas that aren't covered in paint that are still white but that's on me as well.
I suggest getting a box of Neophytes to see if you like painting them, the process is more or less for the rest of the army.

Yeah it's a full-kit, the sprue has multiples of everything. For a unit of 10, you can have two heavy weapons (Mining Laser, Seismic Cannon, Heavy Stubber), two special weapons (grenade launcher, webber, flamer), 1 cult icon to revive dead models, and the rest with autoguns. You can only have one of each weapon so there's that. You used to be able to field 4 mining lasers in a unit of 20, now I run 2 mining lasers, 2 seismic, 2 webbers, 2 grenade launchers.
Some people take Heavy Stubber instead of a mining laser to wipe out infantry, because you can have 6 attacks with sustained hits and lethal hits and critting on 5+ and it adds up quickly but I lack anti-tank so decided to use Mining Laser. The 12 autoguns with 24 attacks do a lot already. I built the leader with small webber and power weapon because I like it's look but if you're going for min-maxing, give him an autogun.

Primus the mould-line face. I'm painting the carapace parts in dark purple, then highlight it with magenta & pink. I use green for the pants and clothing and burgundy for cloth, flags and whatnot.
