Go into quick draft and take every rare you see, maybe skipping the ones that are dogshit unplayable in every format. Getting 7+ rares in your quickdraft is basically already better than opening packs with the gems you spent on your entrance fee so if that happens you're already ahead. Maybe the bots are stingier now with passing rares, I don't really know.

Regardless of the raredraft strategy you'll still be trying to follow drafting principles to attempt to make a good deck and win enough to get some of your gems back. Which means trying to keep your deck's strategy focused and limited to 2 colors, or 3 if you are disciplined with picking up dual lands and other fixing and have a good reason to be doing so. Websites like 17lands will give you a basic idea of which cards are good and which aren't, and you can filter by deck color paring once you're settling into a lane.

I dont quickdraft but apparently they made the bots MUCH more stingy on rares and mythics. Not sure how exactly but drafting for rares seems less viable. Also keep in mind if hes a new player by not buying packs with those gems/gold hes not getting those dumb gold packs.

Energy is the best deck but I don't think it's that much better than everything else.
GSZ got cut from the maindeck of the best green deck (Amulet Titan), they just run 1-2 copies in the sideboard to find silver bullets like Collector Ouphe.
Opal is great and obviously got Breach banned. The Mox Mox Tamiyo Emry shell is very strong and has a few decks capable of winning tournaments. If I had to build a new Modern deck I'd start there, but there is very strong sideboard hate against it.

you can do mock drafts on sites like draftsim but it's not great practice. mostly just useful to get familiar before a set drops.
if you want to get good at drafting (and spend less money) you should spend more time studying draft than playing it. watch 2-3 draft runs from a top drafter for every 1 that you do on your own.

Seeing one memories returning unused seems silly.
Having an Ardyn and leaving reinforcements and the second dreams of laguna out also seems like a waste. Sage's Noulith is a very mediocre card and serves no purpose but to fuel Edgar and Valkyrie which seems pointless when you have to great draw spells not being used which incidentally also trigger your Ultros which is more valuable all by itself.
I feel like swapping shambling ci'eth for shinra's reinforcements in an Ardyn deck is a no brainer, I'd also swap the two nouliths for dreams of laguna and hecteyes and Edgar for the second memories returning. Ice Flan is probably a better option than Valkyrie at that point maybe.
That way you have an extremely infuriating deck to play against with tons of removal and lots of card draw that can hold the game very easily until you get to cast Ardyn, but honestly you'll be able to grind out the game before that anyway.

It takes around 40 bo3 runs of three matches each to complete a set, and you'd end up with enough wildcards to pretty much make any single deck you're interested in on top of that. If you're completing every set and willing to wait around, you wouldn't need to spend any wildcards at all once rotation kicks in.

I think Wizards is well aware that 60 card is on its way out. They put in the absolute bare minimum into 60 card formats.
There is no actual judge program.
There is no player ban list, meaning no one actually tracks bans.
The only event that gets any funding at all are the pro tours. SCG and Channel Fireball (RIP) have left the tournament space for good.
Every standard set comes with a slew of Commander products, Commandfests are basically a way for WotC to make money without actually doing anything.
All that's really left to do at this point is for some high level Hasbro executive to ask why Wizards still supports 60 card constructed instead of going all in on Commander.

You really just got to get a feel for which cards are good in which decks. You see a Sahagin its just a 2 mana 1/3 and maybe you remember that some blue/red deck made it into a 5/7 and smacked you in the face was it so it was pretty good, right? But you have no non-creature spells that cost 4 or more. Red/blue has a lot of cards that care about non-creature spells that cost 4 or more so naturally they're going to want to pick both a lot of those cards and a lot of activators for those cards. So maybe a more innocuous card like Retrieve the Espers which alone is a shitty 4 mana 3/3 becomes more appealing when its activating cards in a blue/red deck. Some cards really do well in a lot of different decks, sometimes for different reasons.

The example in Edges of Eternities that's pretty straight-forward is an uncommon white sorcery called Honor, put a +1/+1 counter on a creature, draw a card. Nothing crazy happening there. Blue/White has a draw a 2nd card synergy, Green/White has +1/+1 counters synergy, the card will presumably be generically good in all white decks but particularly good with those synergies.

Identifying what color pairings might be open at your table is what's going to help you build a deck with synergy. You see a card passed to you that if you were drafting the color pairing that the card does best in, that you'd have picked it way earlier than you're seeing it now is a good indicator that the people next to you aren't in that color pairing. That might again be something like seeing a sahagin pick 8 a cloud of darkness pick 5. Just good cards that shouldn't really be going that late.

If its a dead card in deck it doesn't matter about any other interaction, the deck would have literally no way to cast a red spell other than omniscience, so only relevant questions are how fast it wins the game and what cards available you need to do so

Ideally we'd figure out some card thats relevant to the decklist so its not dead in hand, in the decks colors, and can be looped by marang to win the game. UW omni did that with 1 copy of Founding the Third Path, which could mill omni or recur a graveyard spell so it was useful on its own, or mill opponent out with 2x marangs
I haven't found any such card post-rotation, at least not in blue/green. Almost nothing damages/mills opponents or makes haste tokens or exiles their library anymore except in red/black

Chandra is the best of the dead cards imo because her modes basically become:
>win the game on the spot if you have just 1x marang on hand/board, no need 2nd
>sweep the board with 8 fireball to delay a turn
>copy a trainer or pond prophet in a pinch to dig
>dig 3 cards deep and add red mana, only relevant if you have untapped mana to hardcast spells ie the next turn
Chandra copies marang, marang bounces chandra, recast chandra, chandra bounces marang, etc, only takes 4 iterations to have lethal hasty marang tokens that can bounce 5 reach/flying blockers

There's way too much to cover in a post or even series of posts, and even the best don't get it right 100% of the time. It could be the case you're making good lists and just have bad luck, it could also be the case you're overestimating how good your decks actually are. Hard to say without seeing anything. If you're new, it's probably best to just copy notes from a guide or tier list for now, try to notice what the good cards have in common. Don't worry too much about the rares and mythics at the start, there's a huge range of variance there and you'll be seeing them far less often. I've noticed bad drafters tend to overfocus on bombs a lot, yes sometimes your opponent will drop three in a row and there's nothing you can do, but far more often matches will be decided by commons and uncommons. Learn the archetypes in the set, figure out what the good synergies and good payoffs are. Something like station monitor will likely outperform a significant chunk of the rares in the set, but it'll be completely worthless if you're not able to double spell reliably. Something like brightspear zealot will likely be pretty shit, despite being in the same archetype the payoff is way worse. Something like scout for survivors will probably be a strong card in general, it'll be especially good for GW with counter synergy but any white deck will be happy with the rate it provides.

it gives a weenie aggro deck a lot of extra reach, village rites in the face of removal, a way to suicide bob, removes x/1 blockers, just a draw 2 for 1 mana if you were going to attack into bigger blockers anyway
and it works great with stab/disfigure being the best 1 mana black removal when cut down is gone

Standard is fucked, you get killed instantly by monored, then any deck that isn't monored wins on turn 2.
Pioneer is literally only monored.
The worst part of the game is it's so fucking SLOW.
It takes 50 seconds just to get into a match and then your opponent just fucking sits there for 2 minutes doing nothing and you're forced to look at a locked screen while they decide whether or not to mulligan. Then they can stall a full minute every single turn.

I've played 5 games (standard) today, and every single one of my opponents is just some version of "counter or kill every creature the opponent plays and win via spells."

To be fair, I'm trying to play Boros equipment, but I can't keep a single thing on the board. It's all bouncing shit to my hand or killing it. It feels like I'm not even allowed to play the game. I play something on the field and it instantly dies.

The only thing you need to know about predictions is that absolutely nobody is good at them. The best of the best will regularly overestimate trash and skip over busted cards. EOE does look like it's on the weaker side for Standard, but that's no guarantee it actually will be. Typically sets will have a handful of playables, TDM for example had cori steel cutter (very strong), marang river regent, voice of victory, Tersa, and a few others. FIN had Cecil and Vivi, that's basically it. Formats other than Standard may have others.

I still don't have any deck I can play in a ranked format. What can/should I make to grind out rank for the next 11 days so I don't miss out on the free packs? I like playing a bit longer games and sort of dislike aggro playstyle. I've been to mythic years ago when standard was magda/goldspan shit, so I think I can do it. I just don't know what to play and also don't want to spend wildcards on things that are going to rotate out. Preferably something on the cheaper side wildcard wise.
