I'm having a ball painting my Chaos Terminators. The last time I built a kit before I picked the hobby back up was 4th edition, and assembling the newer kits I'm impressed with how smoothly they fit together even if they aren't as pose-able, and how fine some of the details are in plastic. For what I'm looking forward to; I have a Chaos Land Raider I found at a goodwill for a steal that I'm really looking forward to building. I built a couple of Imperial ones back in the day and they're a good but dated kit, but I don't love it any less for it. I wasn't sure what to do with the paint job since my freehand isn't too great and overall I'm an amateur painter, but I want to do more than just paint it plain Black Legion colors. Painting freehand flames as a theme on my Terminators inspires me to continue that theme for the Land Raider, as I want to play it as a transport for the Terminators. I don't really care how off-meta that may be, Land Raiders carrying Terminators is fucking rad and I live for that shit.

So techmarines are usually given some level of distrust by their brothers due to the mixed loyalty but how do the tech priests and overall machine cult feel about techmarines?

It's a little different every time cause I mix my own pastes with flexible modeling paste, sanded grout, and whatever dirt from outside. Sometimes its aragonite coral sand, sometimes its coconut coir and sand, other times its baseball diamond sand and mixed tree bark ground up. Rocks are always raw cork bark. Usually I apply my paste after painting the model and blank it out with a couple coats of grey seer before attacking it with plaguebearer and militarum contrast in random splotches. Sometimes ill mix the two colours and apply it over everything, then stipple in some of the colours out the pot in a couple spots. Other times I'll do layers of them depending on what I feel like. Then basecoat rocks straken green, all over wash nuln and agrax, all over drybrush with straken, light drybrush all over with ogryn camo focusing on rocks. The pools are dark reaper base, stipple pools of overthinned lothern blue, then going over the top with citadel gemstone paint. I find you can change quite a lot in your basing recipe, and as long as a few key things remain the same then they still work together

I decided what to do with the 60 infernus marines.

I want to take the 12 assault cannons from the 60 terminators and use Cyclone launchers, and there's about 12 leaders I'm turning into TH+Storm shield dudes. So the assault cannon dudes will have storm bolters.

SO this means I'll have 12 chopped off assault cannons to turn into Chaincannon Havoks. The Champion gets to use a flamer, so thats easy as pie there.

I happen to have 15 kromlech bikes hanging around so they're becoming chaos bikers. They're the superior bikes with 4 shots each twin-linked under 12".

I have 12 sergeants, turning them into a squad of assault intercessors would be super easy. Leaving a bit over 30 dudes to remain as Infernus marines.

The infernus marines will be supplementing the terminator heavy army I decided on. I went back and forth on loads of ideas with weird additional bits to turn them into heavy intercessors and the like. This changed on the chapter name I decided to give them.

I blame pic related from my childhood for the name: Dragon Warriors.

Going through possible fluff for them now. They're going to be very dark angels-esque in one way. They have a few traitor companies.

I'm more set on doing a 1k point army with chaos and having the 3 units of havoks set as my core. I may make them tzeentch based, so their crits during a dark pacts makes them hurt anything on a 5+.

Having tzeentch bikers and some power fists and I feel set for the 705 points planned out for now. Some old bloodletters sitting around too. If I pack on some leftover flamer-thousand sons I could reach 1k easily.

I may never push it beyond 1k, because havoks will be a bit weak in the higher games.

The quality of codexes got so awfully worse since the 8e. The Primaris-slop aside, 8th edition codexes were quite rich with lore, battle markings and all kind of details. 9e and 10e codexes are not only recycled but they actually miss a ton of fluff and art present in the previous books.

Anyways I'm prepping an autogun sergeant for batch painting with 4 other units. I forgot to paint his autogun and I'm glad I did because I was able to test out Pro Acryl's AMP Steel color and Dark silver for the drum magazine.

The Pro Acryl Amp steel color (for the body of the autogun) got the job done, and so did the pro acryl dark silver for the drum magazine.
The body armor is AK Natural steel. And I didn't really see much of a difference between that color and Pro Acryl's amp colors steel paint.

Anyways if Pro Acryl discontinues selling their alternative bottle caps like the flip tops and the proper dropper caps, there's always China to have your back.

I think it's more likely that gw is cutting costs in places that cost them too much. Writers are expensive as are high resolution colour prints and binding. I think going forward we'll see a lot less lore and potentially a return to paperback codexes but paperbacks will only return if they hike the price on hardback for a year or so to temper peoples reactions to charging the same amount for paperback. I saw the MLB do the same with all their tickets for our local team over the past two decades. They used to come in nice, thick stock folders with embossed metallic logos, with super high quality prints on the ticket themselves, and now they did away with the folder, and tickets are very basic prints on very cheap paper. Ah yeah its... a process. I mix vallejo matte black with Dark Reaper and a bit of Thunderhawk Blue.
Otherwise I do Abaddon Black (but Vallejo matte black is better imo) with a healthy dose of Maccragge Blue and a tiny bit of Fenrisian Grey for that off black blueish, flat matte look.

For the highlights I use Dark Reaper on every edge, then go up to Thunderhawk Blue to the more raised edges, then Fenrisian Grey for the top highlights. Then a dot of white for the peaks.
Ask chatgpt how to have these paints by mixing what you have if you cant be bothered to buy the pots of these colors just for highlights.
You dont want to use pure black like you dont want to use pure white on too large a surface.

This may be difficult to notice but the chaplain's armor is not the same as his bike. The armor is pure matte black, while the bike is the blue ish black I use for my templars. They have the same highlights though.
Its to differenciate between chaplain black and BT black.

I had a trio of warriors converted to have this thing in their hands as standins for guards back then, unfortunately I got rid of the minis quite some time ago, but the idea keeps being lodged in my head as I was very proud of the gun and the extra armor plating for the models by cutting apart spare carnifex carapaces
the trick to make the unit not look like warriors ended up being no really the heavier carapace but snipping off the warrior crests and using them to make pincers-like things protruding from the first cranial plate and covering the eyes.

Yes I make a mix for the base coat. The black is strong, and its usually 60% of the base coat, so it wont be too bright to beat the dark reaper highlight.
That said, I am 99% sure I am not doing it as efficiently as possible. I seem to use a very complex and annoying method for something simple to do.
If any other anons do off black regularly I am all ears on how they do it.
On pic rel you mayyy be able to see the thick dark reaper highlight on his tassels and arms, but I'm probably overworking on something that's not even visible.
Dribrushing thunderhawk is probably not a bad idea if you clean it up after.

I do think marine models have a very cohesive and consistent appearance between them even with different armor patterns and terminators and dreadnoughts and such.
