been playing scarlet heros as prep for running osr game for game night

unfortunately I think you lose a lot of the tactical depth without a party. But I had a real blast playing the boat ambush of nights dark terror with my adjusted rules. which was keep the fray die and defy death roll, but do away with the damage mitigation. that plus having a party of 2 normal pcs without those rules.

think im ready to try and run this encounter tonight at game night.

Seem like the trigrams and hexagrams of the classic I-Ching would be a good starting point for an AI deck. The traditional readings would be straightforward to apply to actions, and the weeb flavor is quite high compared to a Tarot deck.
The ability to separate 8 trigrams from 64 hexagrams gives loads of room for broad decisions versus granular ones.

trying to populate it with enough different results to make the hexflower format worth dealing with at the table while also not dipping into discrete attack actions that hinge on a system
while I normally like handing control of things off to another entity as much as possible, I think combat in most systems is already enough slowdown that adding a specific oracle for tactics is overkill and not worth the weight. simply acting neutrally as a GM and maybe doing an adhoc "which thing does the monster do given current context" roll every once in a while more than suffices
maybe dismissing the idea outright isn't the way to go, but as much as I liked the idea at first blush it seemed like it would be difficult to put together and add a ton of clunk at the table

Running 5e while using the ADND 1e dmg for dungeon generation and MUNE.
They were hired by the local lord to clear the ruins beneath his family’s abandoned estate. They get as much treasure as they can carry from the vaults.
Besides, if they leave the ruins alone someone else will be hired to go die in them.
They have a plan though. The cleric and barbarian will go in the front entrance to draw out the goblins while the ranger and fighter flank through the partially collapsed tunnel. If they can kill the goblin warlord, it might make the rest scatter.

There's a colony sci-fi game for 2 players that does this called "The Wanderers" its a tale where two friends say farewell before boarding starships charted for new colonies at the edge of space and are keeping in touch via intergalactic UPS/Fedex/USPS/Royal Mail. You write letters to each other about your lives your living and what is going on, using a deck of cards to write about what happens, then mailing a card with your letter to the player and that card acts as their situation, they write about it, then draw a card and send it to you for your next thing to write about.
It's cool to play with "companion decks" that are color coded and if you play long enough you get the opposite person's deck, which is nice because its a cool little reminder of your irl friend who lives far away and of the game you had together.

Sorry for the late reply. FlexAI is not a neural network, it's a bloated autistic rulebook that has an ever-expanding set of tactics tables you could roll on, with different ranges depending on difficulty and type.

Another recommendation is Avalon Solo Adventure System, which ALSO has enemy tactics tables. The tables range from very simple "this attacks or not" to very specific maneuvers based on the enemy type. Kinda like FlexAI but not as convoluted.

I use a couple piles of MTG cards separated by types if I want to pull a random character (creature) or what the local scenery might look like (land). I don't really have hard rules for it besides inferring a character's archetype or how powerful they might based on the card's stats. They're a quick alternative when I don't want to roll on a bunch of tables.

create your character with whatever means you normally use. "I made it up" or a lifepath system or whatever. personally I prefer more along the lines of just a background profession and some personality traits
you can then extrapolate what that character wants and then that's the premise of the game and the goal of the character boom easy done. or roll a random event through whatever GM emulator you use and treat it as a major goal-defining part of his background, and then yeah. the goal of the character is the premise of the game

My game fell apart. The story was interesting, but the system doesn't really hold up once combat starts. These Black Hack games are good for quick character generation and content generation, but they don't always make a lot of sense when the mechanics are put under scrutiny.

>The back of the book lists how random encounters should work and how frequent they should be, but expects you to make the random encounter tables from scratch...

Hey anons, got a question.
I'm looking into playing Wrath and Glory as a solo rpg, but I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to play it with only one playable character, or should I just bite the bullet and build a team?
Playing a single character would invariably mess with battle initiative seeing as how it' would go Me > NPC > Me > NPC etc but I can resolve that problem later. The plan is to start play as a Crimson Fists Scout who's gonna work his way up to his Black Carapace at which point I'll level up to Astartes then eventually level up to Primaris (reluctantly) as the game goes on.
Input would be appreciated if anyone else has done something like this before.

I also posted this in /40KRPG/ but I'm here covering my bases.

Most games are balanced around more than one hero, and compensating for that is hard without experience. Even one extra dude gives a lot more slack when it comes to a few bad rolls, chances to run if shit goes badly, and spread of non-combat skills. Henchmen can cover that in some games, but it doesn't sound like it'd fit your game.
Maybe try out some simple combats as basic training and see how it goes.

I'm thinking combat might be something easily tackled in the starting games by using the games Mobs rules wherein every enemy only gets 1 wound, making them easier to deal with en masse. I'm not necessarily against having team mates, I'm just not a big fan of the would-be Space Marine and his squishy mortal team of followers. Wrath and Glory RAW has the Absolvers Chapter Scouts earning their black carapace by competently leading a team of mortals in combat. That's how they explain away Scouts and Marines being in teams where they usually wouldn't be present. I was just hoping to buck that one convention.

Also, if you don't know the system, then you don't know the circumstances of what I'm talking about. The system is a small ruleslite system that looks like it's mechanically sound at first, but then once combat starts some things that aren't immediately apparent pop up.

see if doing the scarlet heros method works. If there are weak creatures around you, you can deal an extra whatever of damage to them alongside your primary action, then also have a system to mitigate incoming pressure. having an additional character does something like triple your combat effectiveness since it adds to your overall "meatpoints" as well as your teams number of actions. So do something that mitigates incoming effects and increases outgoing effects is the go to for running lesser amounts of people in a game meant for larger parties.

scarlet heros does 3 things:
1. enemies of equal or less then your hit dice can be hit with an additional damage die outright regardless of action that turn (increase effective number of actions)
2. Damage is reduced, every die of damamge can only deal between 0-4 hp of damage (decrease fragility)
3. Damage can be taken in leu of negative side effects that could otherwise be mitigated by having more of a party
Anonymous No.96201850
>>96201774
going off this, I have been using a modified version of scarlet heros for a small party. Scarlet heros proper is ment for really just 1 solo pc and maybe the occasional backup, and gets overpowered if you use multiple pc's wih rules. so I took the first and third rule for solo play, but let damage effect me as normal, since I could use the damage in leu of negative side effect for excessive damage as well, while the other normal characters also soak up a good deal of the damage received. Its 1 special rule main pc, 2 normal rules side pcs, and 1 helper non primary combatant.

I just remember skimming the PDF and getting annoyed that the author uses a bunch of 2d20 tables, with the results sorted in alphabetical order. Now. As I was saying. You may find it best to prepare a 'cheat sheet' for the standard tasks or actions, with the best person on your crew to attempt them.
Anonymous No.96202692
Now, let's have Vyssia make a torpedo shot. We will say torvarion took his turn for an evasive action task.
So we roll vs Difficulty 4.
Thats fairly hard. The ship gets 1 d20 to roll 14 or less, scoring one bonus momentum and another success on an 8 or less (because it is SO built for combat).
Vyssia rolls 2d20 and wants less than or equal to 15 on both rolls, with less than or equal to 8 scoring an additional success and a bonus momentum. However. Even if each d20 'succeeds' that is still only a possible 3 successes v difficulty 4, unless one d20 scores an extra success...

So lets have her spend -6 momentum from the groups pool to roll her atrack with three extra dice.
Now she is rolling 5d20's to try for
Since she is buying dice, we will also go ahead and SALVO mode those quantums. +1 d for 5d.
So on 6 d20's she wants less than 15 or equal to.

And all of this I, the human, never have to remember, because I wrote out the cheat sheet ahead of time.
STAnon No.96202702
And since we have free subsystem targeting from the ship's downright EVIL 'fast resolution sensors' trait. We will have those torpedoes slam right into the enemy engines.
No engines, no power.
No power, no shields and more importantly...
No weapons.
STAnon No.96202712 >>96204695
Or, lets have our guys make our shields tougher against an enemy attack.
Oh noes! A romulan warbird is decloakingnto take pot shots at us with their fucking disruptors!
Lets stack up some modulate shields actions while they are cloaked and we cannot attack.

Because if our resistance gets around the 9-12 mark, they literally cannot hurt us. And considering our warship has res 7 already, and our VERSATILE 2 phasers generate so much bullshit free momentum to spend...

I made my PC for the Space Patrol game. Carter Donovan, a human from Earth, member of the Stellar Order (those who have read Thorkent's space opera books will know about them, they are like G.U.N but competent). He was a simple earthling boy who caught between a Galactic gangland war, the Order rescued him and he was so impressed that he vowed to become a member of the organization, and he did, he is now in the rapid response duty, always ready for trouble. Strength: 9 Dexterity: 9 Constitution: 11 Mentality: 14 Charisma: 15 Luck: 8 Training: Craftsman
He is a weird, lovable, jock-nerd hybrid. He is also kinda Psionic, he can use telekinesis only under great stress.

>where to start
A game you're already familiar with (preferably as a GM), playing a straightforward adventure like a dungeon crawl. Keep it as straightforward and familiar as possible while you practise handling both sides of the game.
Alternatively, there are several "basically board games" you can play without much creative input to get easy games in and exercise your imagination. Notequest, 4 Against Darkness, 2D6 Dungeon, D100 Dungeon, and more.
Other alternative: Ironsworn is well liked as a more narrative "write your own adventure" game but that's not what I personally want so I can't say much beyond it didn't work for me. Likewise Thousand Year Old Vampire is basically a gameified series of writing prompts.

Dragonbane core set.

Cheap (for how much you get)
The loot cards are great for solo
The rules are simple enough to bend if you want to house rule anything
Fantasy is easy for soloing: no need for overly realistic characters, just be an angry duck and hit monsters

Most importantly it comes with some pretty great solo rules: they might not be the best rules ever but I think they are amazing for "teaching" people who have never played solo how to do it. The solo adventure included is pretty basic dungeon crawling where you get started with the basic quest as written, but with enough openings for you to work your random tables and interpretations into it

Currently I have two campaigns, though the second one is less a campaign and more of a sitcom series. The first is a Space Opera in Savage Worlds. I current put this game on hold for now. but am using it's characters and setting for the second game.

See I am a bit weird and like fanfic stories but don't really want to read or write them much. so gaming became a good source of those stories. I made a non-canon verison of the space opera world and turned it into a meta game within a game, in this game I play not only the PCs actually going through the dungeons but also the players and DM running the game. to add even more to this clusterfuck I also used characters from different "Worlds" like Shadow from Sonic, Trixie from MLP and Toyosatomimi Miko from Touhou. I used three of my own characters to round out the roster.

I plan to run 5E's LMoP adventure to try out 5E solo as I mostly played it in a group before.

I also made a tumblr blog for my Solo RPG stuff so I plan on making an actual play complete with screenshots of Foundry VTT to boot, I could make a video but I prefer the low effort text style, besides am not going to voice act a MLP character in my redneck family that's just asking for trouble.

But hopefully soon I'll have a good game to share next time.

I have to say, after years of solo play, this chart, or something like it has far and away been my most used resource.

Instead of a yes/no question, you come up with a probable outcome given a scenario then roll a die. the further it is away from 1 the further it deviates from your initial assumption. on a d20 1-10 follows your assumption, 11-15 a distinct but likely alternative occurs, 16-18 something unexpected occurs, and 19-20 something very unexpected.

This really cuts down on follow up questions and directs you to think how things flow together. “im in an orc cave, so they next entrence probably has orcs laying about” roll a 16 “you find no orcs, but you have entered one of thier worg pits!”

it functionally is a yes/yes but/ no but/ no table, but I find it a lot more intuitive narritively speaking.

I'm gonna solo so fucking hard tonight after I do some book keeping and prep for other games I'm running. I'm going to keep working on my homebrew solo RPG that's loosely based on the pathfinder card game and OSE kind of merged. My goal is to build my own collection of dungeons, adventures, npcs, monsters, etc that I can explore using adventure card game mechanics mixed with random tables and standard character sheets, and then having world exploration and stuff where I have physical tiles and wooden icons and stuff for representing towns and cities and stuff. Eventually I'll probably build into mass combat realm management and battles where I rip off stuff like risk and simple miniature wargames to do mass battles and stuff using custom battalion tiles etc.

I basically really like mixing board games and war games and ttrpgs and focusing on adventure party management and realm management aspects. It's starting to feel like when I was a kid building armies with leaves and pinecones and making them fight and telling stories of that sort of stuff.

I no longer have the energy required for first-person prose (and due to subject matter I think it was negatively affecting my psyche) and started doing 3rd person, but it was such a huge departure from doing it 1st person for so long that I was really struggling to get words on the page in a way that didn't make me feel foolish. My dumbass brain also wasn't ok with just leaving it as is, and I don't like the "play out a scene and then journal it" approach, I HAVE to journal as I play. Especially for combat. It's by far more edge-of-my-seat fun to play out and journal a combat concurrently. And doubly so for first person. It's just that the format demands my brain do actual writing and not just logging.

The 'Wings' of the structure are part suppressor, part archive, intended to keep the history and civilization of the Precursors intact until they can be helped, or at least to warn others of the danger that awaits them on the world below. However the wings are no longer entirely functional for some reason allowing the aspect to corrupt the warning signal/beacon song. Now it lures people in to try and get someone to free the spirit aspect from an old research base below. Unfortunately for it, the devolutionary virus that is the reason the Precursors secluded themselves in the first place has run rampant and those who arrive, drawn by the song, are reduced to beasts, often before they even reach the world below.

wow, very happy with how this scenario played out.

basicly both us and the ogre smashed the goblins real hard, and the head orc headed to his potion closet only to get a fire breath potion to the face from the earth shaking of the ogre. only the worg held on in combat. there was some chip damage to our party and the ogre.
The lead orc saw where the wind was going, guzzled down a health potion and bolted out of there. leaving only the worg which bravely held its ground. our party decided to retrest sovthey could soften each other up
the worg kept fighting and somehow survived with 1 hp, we felt bad, so we sprung out and fired at the big brute which started lumbering towards us, it smashed a confessional converted to a worg pen, sending shrapenel and worg parts at us.
Fortunately we won the initiative of the last round, and my inquisitor cleric pulled a recently looted magic wond and finished the ogre off with 2 magic missiles.
Because the worg was such a bad ass essentially holding off the ogre by itself for 3 turns, my cleric tried to befreind it, even using a meta currency to make it persuadable giving its maste abandoned it and its brothers were smashed to a pulp because of that.
one of the confessionals was full of 1500 gp worth of loot, that plus our new dog of unusual size was more then a reward for us, now we are seeing if we can head out of this holy hell hole dungeon alive.

GURPS Space Ships 2 focuses on traders and liners and has rules for acquiring and selling cargo and planetary supply/demand.
Those are what I’m following.
I mainly roll a knowledge check to select a specific port where my goods would be in high demand, then randomly determine the distance in AU and Parsecs. Then I continue from there to the next port.
I’m currently above an extreme, non-industrial frontier mining world where I just delivered a shipment of textiles for 1.8 million, making a .4 mil profit.
I rolled quite low and failed my haggling check, so I had to sell at a bad price after spending two weeks on station.
Next stop will be determined by the goods I get, probably heavy metals since they’re at a -3 on determining the price.

Random tables from Mythic GME 2e and the Universal NPC Emulator.
For the pilot my rolls were:
>Altered Scene, Remove Character, Valuable, Enormous, Joyfully, Modern
Which I interpreted as the pilot leaving for greener pastures which required me to stay in port for a few more days looking for a suitable replacement.
Another event was:
>Ambiguous Event, Flee, Hindrance, Softly, Smooth
Which I interpreted as a suspicious man seeking passage off planet, then rolled on UNE to determine how he acted.
>Friendly, Cautious, Scheming, Arrangement, Antagonist
A criminal needed to flee and quickly. He offered to pay triple the usual price and then
>Withdrawn, Scheming, Negotiation, Knowledge
Offered to give me information on local pirate routes for $10,000 when we arrived at our destination.
Currently I just encountered my white space whale. We’ll probably die fighting it, but it’s my character’s obsession. So all power to the tertiary weapon battery!

Alright so not much different than stuff I've handled. Im finding GME isn't altering stuff much for me. My first session had like 3 random events/alterations and felt great but since then I've been having to either come up with my own stuff or roll because I wanted something thrown my way but haven't had anything come up. My chaos has been at like 6/7 for 3 sessions now

I only randomly calculate distance for travel, usually distance to/from the nearest jump point in AU (d6), then the distance in parsecs (d20). I’m working under the assumption that most civilized worlds are known to an experienced merchant captain with knowledge of the sector/core/bubble like Elite or Starsector.
I might try a more exploratory campaign later at some point.

I ran a rogue trader exploration thingy before It was nice discovering the place as I go even with coordinates to reach for a mission there was unknown planets or lost to rediscover. Sounds easy enough for you to just have a far away location to reach and try it out. Lost communication with another crew you have to go there to retrieve the cargo and see what happened. Could even be a rogue crew leaving with merchandise having to track them there.

Oracle decks started as a variation of tarot decks, the important difference being that while tarot cards are supposed to stick to certain themes, patterns, and meanings, oracle cards are more free in this regard.
This got adopted in the TTRPG market. Personally, I own The Citadel (picrel), and The Oracle (made as a companion for the Magus, I backed the Kickstarter).

S1E7 - "Signals"

Our intrepid Crew of the U.S.S. Indefatigable have been sent to find the missing runabout Susquehanna. the course and sensors lead them to a planet, they found some live commbadges but got no answer.

Our captain has sent his XO, the andorian Vyssia Thoss, Ops 1, Grinzyr glov Brin the tellarite, Doctor Gwen Tonn the cybernetically 'repaired' human and his Wife, T'Lana, the security officer with her Rifle to guard them. As away team down to the planet.

Ship's engineer Larr Gollin, the Rigellian, had to modify the transporter to Punch through some heavy ECM hash
>very similar to their last mission where their shuttle crashed upon entering the atmo thanks to the ECM, so this time they elected to beef up the transporter.

Larr Gollin sets up a 'carrier wave' and demats the away team, then cranks up the power and punches through the transporter beam ONE person at a time to ensure safe Pad-to-Site orbit to surface beaming.

let's see how this goes.

then first ed. then make sure at least the core books are tagged. then you go standard rpg rules select button next gen era button. then hit space sector button. dropdown for different quadrants and generate away. its stupid fast and easy.

There's at least one system that uses a hexflower for its enemy AI. Enemies have a few regular actions scattered across their hexflower, and then a Special Ability A and B that they get access to once they lose enough health.
