>TQWhat's your favorite Voltron commander?
Thirty (30) starting life is objectively superior to fourty (40)
>>96164004Wait I thought modern spider man was just wearing an iron man suit?
>>96163999 (OP)TQ: thrun, the last troll and Tifa Lockhart.
Asking this again in the previous thread that just died: Is a dimir fransisco/Malcolm pirate deck with a bunch of 1-2 mana pirates with evasion and time sieve considered too strong for bracket 2 and 3 because it's capable of chaining extra turns, even if I run no gamechangers?
>>96164023This it the origin of Spiders-man
>>96164004So the way this card works you're making a regular spider into the legendary hero, there's no "man" part involved.
Why the fuck doesn't it make a human token so it can turn it into a spider-man with the 2nd ability?
>>96164004This set seems ridiculously underpowered so far.
>>96163999 (OP)>What's your favorite Voltron commander?Currently Mistform Ultimus. Bring out a bunch of tribal support creatures/enchantments, benefit from all of them the moment he drops. It's like a singular version of Slivers, it's quite neat
>TQ
I wish it wasn't a Dr. Who card but oh well. Stacking keywords is cooler than auras.
>>96164044>>96164036It's the origin of Man-Spider
>>96163999 (OP)what if this was the mimeoplasm? was that what they were going for originally?

Could use some help with shit to cut to put in more protection.
>>96164046It's a good thing Edge Of Eternities set the bar so low then power wise
>>96164023every spider man has always been bitten by a radioactive spider. what powers he actually gets from that vary, but it's at least "spider sense," standard superhero strength and durability, and being able to crawl up walls. the movies have all shown different outcomes in this, (I think (I didn't watch any besides the first couple)).
>>96164044probably marvel said so. it's already weird as a 2/1 reach in white, then by the time you can attack it's a 3/2 for 2 mana, and if it survives it threatens 6 damage on the next turn. it's really off from a draft perspective. if you're curving into it, unless you played a 1 mana human it's like
>>96164044 says and it makes a legendary spider spider hero (named "Spider").
>>96164004Why is the Angry Video Game Nerd on the card?
>>96164004this card is ASS
>>96163999 (OP)>What's your favorite Voltron commander?Gisela and Horde of Notions. Only ones I ever made and they are a lot of fun.
For Horde I played all the dual lands, fetches, and good equipment with all the tutors. Mana curve capped out at 5, and it had all the good small creatures. Every creature was a threat in that deck.
>>96164004Why isn't this green

Continuation from previous deck: I put in lands and some more card draw as well as some interaction. Now, I'm at 129 cards and my deck is somehow torn between reanimator shenanigans and combos.
Help me cut 29 cards so that I don't have to sacrifice either strategy (or tell me that I need to either get rid of the sculpting steel/blood artist strategy or the big artifact reanimator strategy)

Obviously there are some exceptions, FF and fallout were good about it, but I mostly mean in general.
>>96164364Because it fits almost all of those characters. If you want to argue The Master or Eggman aren't black then go ahead. Waste of time.
Can you name all these heroes/villains that should not have been in any of those three colors?

brackets are not defined by game changers, they're defined by the intent of the deck + the restrictions + the game changers.
>>96164897I hope the reign of terror of the Play Design team has finally been ended. Nothing but broken garbage since they took over and switched design philosophies.
For the (mostly) new players ITT, Magic has gone through many ages of design changes, and the designers and developers have been very transparent about their approach. As of around 2010, Magic started "New World Order", a design philosophy in which they believed most new players would mostly see common cards, and that complexity was the biggest barrier to entry into the game. Therefore they decided to make commons simpler, to lower the barrier to entry. At that time each Magic set had a design team, and a development team. Design made the set's cards and mechanics, development adjusted the costs and power of cards to create a balanced environment.
Flash forward to now, and Magic's design philosophy has changed. They discovered that new players were happy to learn MOUNTAINS of Magic cards, mechanics, and jargon if it meant they'd be having fun with their friends. Effectively, the training wheels were off; if there's fewer limits on complexity that they thought, Magic could be as complex as it wanted.
(1/2)
>>96165123should have gatekept/socially bully comic book readers harder
>>96165127(2/2)
Enter Play Design. The traditional Magic design and development became Vision Design, and Play Design. The new goals of these groups: For Vision design, it was to map out the space in which a set's mechanics COULD exist. You basically give them a prompt "Space Set" and they throw shit at a board, playtest mechanics, and make a basic skeleton of something that might work. Then comes Play Design. They determine what is actually in the set, its power level, everything. And their philosophy isn't about balance, it isn't about simplicity. They discovered that what gets people into the game is memorable moments. So in their finite playtests, they look to amp up card power, and create an environment, an experience, that is not necessarily balanced, but is appealing. And that is why we had a string of more cards banned in Standard than ever before, that's why there's no respect or love for Magic's roots, only UB sets to draw in new players. It's all about spectacle now, from the concept push to the card design.
I pray they see past the UB sales, to the format destroying behavior their new philosophy has enabled. Modern is in shambles, and that was the last great Magic format, destroyed, not by UB, but by play design making cards explosive first and balanced second. EDH has seen enormous damage, becoming much faster and barely resembling what it was pre-2020, but its casual heart and bracket bandaids have served to lessen the damage. Nevertheless the source of the damage is Play Design, and something MUST change. Magic works 3 years ahead, so I hope it already has, If not we are in for some serious shit.
I was one of the people that liked to point out how the (now previous) rules actually did allow you to bring in cards from outside the game. I've just now read the updated rules, and I'm glad to see that they've now covered all the scenarios correctly in the manner they intended.
The new rules state that unless something specifically says you can bring it into a Commander game, traditional cards can't be brought into a Commander game. In summary:
- Wish (and alikes) effects don't work.
- Companions DO work, because they added a rule to companion that specifically says they can be brought into a Commander game.
- Dungeons DO work. They're cards (not tokens or helpers or markers), but they're specifically nontraditional cards, which gets around the new rule.
- Learning Lessons doesn't work. It didn't get the same patch that companions got.
Interestingly, Commander got an additional, finally official codified rule: Commander games don't have sideboards. This was never actually stated in the Comprehensive Rules until now. While it had absolutely no bearing on the ability to bring cards into the game, I suspect they added the rule just for the people that think Wishes only grab from sideboards in casual play, just to cover all their bases.
>>96164574>Finally, a use for Inga and Esika
>>96165124If youre budget green and have the usual 2 mana ramps, what else would you run?
>>96165127>>96165134now player here, what was the actual design philosophy at the time when "combo winter" fucked standard?
Lord of the Rings and Final Fantasy were artificially pushed to be successful by making the real magic sets garbage on purpose.
The Universes Beyond shit has swords, dragons and magic in it, while the actual magic sets have haunted houses, detective hats and race cars. This makes UB resemble actual magic more than actual magic.
Once we move to Marvelslop and Avatar, UB will flop just as bad as modern MTG.
>>96165157>nothing has changed and I was wrong the entire timeThank you for the update.
>>96165209>Avatarnot only do I not care to see animated shows (or comics) as mtg cards, seeing how they treated Miku and Spongebob I can only expect the worst set of all time.
>>96164004>>96164574>>96164535I'm so excited to see how the hell they make universes within versions of these cards for arena.
>>96165215that's not what i said at all. If that were true, they wouldn't have to have changed the rules. you're dumb.
What's the threshold for running non-tribe creatures in a tribal deck? I know it's complicated, but like a general rule of thumb. I can't help but feel like there's tension regardless how synergistic the card is.
>>96165188Rampant Growth, Farseek, Sakura Tribe Elder, Explore.
And let's not pretend Three Wishes, Nature's Lore and Into the North are impossible to get for a reasonable price.
>>96165209While there's some truth there, leave the haunted houses out of it, man, spooky fantasy is great
>>96165219Avatar has already been spoiled and confirmed to be a whole set.
meaning mechanically unique cards, unlike Spongebob and Miku
>>96165219>seeing how they treated Miku and SpongeboMiku and Spongebob were SLD releases and were all reprints. Avatar will be a full set with mostly new cards. What the fuck are you talking about, anon?
>>96165228in the classic, MTGO definition of the tribal deck, none. You COULD NOT include a creature that wasn't part of your tribe.
>>96165232All of the monster, room and demon designs in Duskmourn are fantastic. But the pic related element looks like complete dogshit.
>>96165249>why yes I will be buying a case of spiderman ub collector boxes how could you tell
>>96165234>>96165238I'm talking about the artwork, which was mostly ugly for Miku, and lazy for Spongebob
>>96165249Uhhh based Rainey
>>96165157I thought dungeons were gameplay trackers.
>>96165205Combo Winter 1999 was when the incredible design advancement of Wizards was "A block that's drafted together should have a common theme". That is to say it was a very rudimentary time. They successfully made Urza's block mechanically an enchantment block, but marketing fucked it by calling it the "Artifacts Cycle" (due to Urza's connection to artifacts). And yeah they made a ton of broken cards.
The system makeup at that time was Design and Development as it would be for years after, but the philosophy was not very advanced. They were less than 5 years past from their philosophy being "Our design team is Richard Garfield's friends" or "buy a custom set from that guy who likes Magic and repurpose it"
>>96165249San Rainey keeping watch
>>96165225Nothing changed though. You made all that up to cope with the fact you were wrong from the start.
>>96165270im amazed they did the shtick again, after the super positive feedback when they tried it with Lord of the Rings
Screenshots aren't magic cards
>>96165283That's interesting. I wonder how many crazy combos WotC has overlooked in the past, aside from bans.
>>96165300>Screenshots aren't magic cardsthis is the first lesson I learned when I made my first proxies. screenshots just don't work.
>>96164548I bet this causes some site to have an issue, given that a pair of slashes like that is how you show DFCs.
>>96165300The difference is the miku and spongebob lair have playable cards and the reprints are worth more than 50 cents
>>96165328miku wasn't screenshots
>>96165283>that artworkfucking love it
picrel is probably my favorite MtG piece
i have yet to find a nice high resolution picture of the artwork so i can put it on a playmat
>>96165278>309.1. Dungeon is a card type seen only on nontraditional Magic cards.>309.2. Dungeon cards begin outside the game. Dungeon cards arenโt part of a playerโs deck or sideboard. They are brought into the game using the venture into the dungeon keyword action. See rule 701.49, โVenture into the Dungeon.โ
>>96165134The biggest problem is that WOTC has to keep designing cards for 3 wildly different formats - draft, 60c, and Commander, with only Commander and draft having any relevance in paper anymore. They insist on cramming in cards for all these formats into the same sets and making them legal for each format. This makes their job 3x as hard as it would be if they focused just on one winning format and dumped the rest. They never will because they only care about money, not the health or longevity of the game, but if they wanted to fix the problems with magic, they should admit that 60-card formats are dead ends and they should stop designing for them, and that draft is not worthy of being designed around. People can still crack packs and play limited with cards designed and made for Commander.
>>96165328that LotR secret lair was at the time the worst reprint value, and probably still is.
The Spongebob reprint value also is on the underwhelming side, plus its not only screenshots, but just fucking memes too
>>96165224Are they going to still be themed around a city of super heroes or something more arcane and mayocal?
What do you think webslinging is gonna be called?
>>96165270>and lazy for Spongebobthey were all new art or recreated art from the show. none of it were straight screenshots.
>>96164554Consider Narfi, Betrayer King and dip into some snow typal stuff to no longer need to care about commander tax anymore.
>>96165228Zero non-tribal cards. Even changelings are iffy. The only acceptable non-tribal cards are those that directly reference the tribe in question. For example, with Chatterfang Squirrel tribal, Nut Collector is fine, but if you put in Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat because of how good they are for the deck's natural aristocrat bend then it is not a tribal deck, it is an aristocrats deck.
>>96164535>Spiders, Boars, Bats, Bears, Birds, Cats, Dogs, Frogs, Jackals, Lizards, Mice, Otters, Rabbits, Raccoons, Rats, Squirrels, Turtles, and Wolves >mfw they left me out
>>96164818Was thinking of Sonic himself as the only card I wouldnโt be able to include would be Eggman although a work colleague wants him for his Villains deck so itโd at least be used.
>WotC site only has the direct Sonic characters one left and none of the alt card onesFuck it, Iโm getting it. They all also despise anime and most Japanese content in whatever form it takes (โThey sexualise women too much!โ) so maybe I go one step further and make it a stealth weeb deck to really tilt them. What sets over the past few years have had anime cards in them? I think new Eldraine and Neo Kamigawa had some.
>>96165304Combo Winter 1999 can be chalked up to inexperienced designers designing to a theme and a development team that wasn't strong enough. I believe around this time is when they started hiring winners and contenders from the pro tour to become Magic developers since those people understood power level very well.
Personally I remember when I started playing in 2002ish that Earthcraft/Squirrel Nest was my shit. In defense of early designers, it's easy to make half of a combo when the other half doesn't exist.
>>96165342To this day I have a casual Lich's Mirror Storm combo deck that runs Ignite Memories. It's an absolute favorite
Reminder pic related is not a still from the show, it's a meme edit that neither Nickelodeon nor WotC had the rights to.
Reminder that the spooderman meme appeared in the opening credits of one of the Spiderverse movies
Reminder 3 of the previewed Spiderman cards have been characters from the Spiderverse movies
Reminder there is a non-0 chance spooderman will appear on a fucking Magic card.
>>96164535 and Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White

You may have just posted the worst, and most Magic-destructive opinion I've ever seen on /edhg/. Magic has always thrived on a diversity of formats. And draft is turbo based, you should try it
My favourite incorrect bitching about art was for the Transformers cards, with people crying that they were just cartoon screenshots. They straight-up just weren't, being fully new art that just mimicked the cartoon style. Not to mention:
- Megatron being a tank, not a gun.
- Young Spike and Goldbug somehow coexisting.
- Slicer and Flamewar being there are all. Slicer was created four years after the cartoon ended (and was different colors), and Flamewar was created EIGHTEEN years after the cartoon!
>>96165503None of this means anything to me, but I found it interesting nonetheless
>>96165381These cards were probably made before the sonic secret lair.
>>96165374there was new art for the spongebob cards? I thought they just made a literal meme set, because the cards I saw looked like ASS
>>96165550Ditto
I don't care about transformers but I hope this made someone happy
>>96165503Wasn't this all because they chose characters who appeared in a new toyline these cards were meant to promote? Something to do with the alt art versions for them.
>>96165503>Flamewar was created EIGHTEEN years after the cartoonWhat medium did the franchise continue where she would have been created?
>>96165550- In the cartoon (and the 80's in general), Megatron transforms into a handgun. In most depictions past that time, Megatron transforms into something else, because of toy gun safety laws. On the card, he turns into a tank.
- Goldbug is the rebuilt/upgraded form of the Transformer Bumblebee. In the cartoon, this happens well after a major timeskip, where Spike (a human buddy character) has grown into an adult. On the card, Spike is still in his teenager design.
- Slicer and Flamewar weren't in the cartoon. The characters didn't exist at the time.
I accept this is probably unusable in game barring severe autism but man that artwork though
>>96165583There has only ever been a extremely brief period since the beginning where Transformers wasn't putting out at least one type of media, and has literally never stopped putting out toys since it started.
Flamewar debuted in a convention-exclusive comic and toy set in 2005, got a retail toy in 2012, appeared again in a convention-exclusive comic and toy set in 2014, appeared in the retail comic books in 2019, then appeared again in both retail toys and retail comics in 2022 (which the cards were promoting).

And while we're talking about Transformers, they fit into Magic's... magical themes a bit closer them most realize. In most depictions of Transformers, the Cybertronian race aren't actually robots. They're energy life forms that are just animating the robot bodies. In some versions of their "reproductive" process, those life forms are conjured into reality by a mystical godly artifact.

so unless you have stuff like Moonsilver Key to tutor those, keep them out, it liberates normally thought "Obligatory" inputs in the case of Signet and Sol Ring for something else. Chromatic Orery is just never going to show up on the board and when it does, its bound to be immediately dealt with be of how much of a value engine it is. if it isnt countered, it'll be put in baby jail, disabled or destroyed or you get forced to sac it.

>>96166877It'll be interesting to see what the precise set is when it all starts to implode. There's no such thing as infinite hype. I'm already seeing grumblings even among the normie-tranny sphere about the pace of releases. There's only so many LOTR and FFs out there, and Magic's demographic is greying rapidly with little young blood coming in due to how expensive and complicated the game is for under-21s. It's hard to imagine too many 35+ year old men genuinely getting excited for UB products for very much longer, especially when their memberberry dopamines are already reaching the burn out point.
But of course I could just be hope coping and MTG will become even more profitable and popular each year. It just seems impossible to me that these manchildren can continue to slop forever into their 40s and 50s and in some cases 60s, but if you hadve asked me 15 years ago if there wouldve been an entire generation of 3x year olds clapping for Marvel characters I would've called you an idiot so who knows.

>>96167109From what it seemed, they worked on it over something like four years, which I believe is close to double the normal development cycle.
Though it could also be because several of the people at Square Enix were also fans of Magic, since that would increase the amount of ideas tossed around and worked with, some coming from those deep in the development of the games themselves.
EoE may appear lower power from recent sets, but they clearly put a lot into the worldbuilding. I wouldn't mind another set out on the Edge sometime.
