I genuinely don't know what the solution is. I have a decent commander deck and a couple modern decks but I don't drop like 500 dollars a month on this game. I have some friends who do and I find it insane. And I guess that's fine that's how it is but I have like 50 MTG decks that will never be worth shit if I lose access to the 3 friends I have who will still play low-power 60 card kitchen table. I'll never find a group like that at the FLGS because it's ALL fucking EDH and EDH isn't even any better because you still have the "rule zero" bullshit of power levels. Which can be solved with a simple ladder system.

>>96172263Anon did you see how well FF sold?
Every set is going to be a UB set. This is absolutely bonkers considering the LOTR set blew every other set away in terms of sales and FF completely destroyed that record, which is wild considering FF is long past its prime. MTG is going to collaborate with anything and everything since the execs are likely aware that FF is probably nowhere close to the peak in terms of revenue compared to other more desirable IPs.

How retarded would it be to buy a beat up old Beta card to play with?
considering a 4th edition copy would cost like $1 instead
>>96172430>one piece>dragon ball z>naruto>the avengers>blizzard entertainment>dota 2>league of legends>hon (lol)>a proper 40k set>a proper bg3 set>capcom vs. mtgall of these have a good shot at beating ff, especially if wotc adds lottery cards
>>96172382yes and literally everyone hated that
>>96172430FF was a good storm because its fans are both REALLY dedicated, it has mainstream appeal, everybody has their own favourite FF, and there's also just a weird dearth of FF-related collectable shit for people to buy because Squeenix doesn't know how to leverage a brand.
The only thing I could see doing better would be Star Wars but we're sort of in a Star Wars fatigue right now. Marvel and DC are both real popular, but Marvel fatigue's a thing and both it and DC have the issue of both being chock-full of collector shit already.
>>96172430I don't think so - most of the bigger IPs in the west are already so tapped that fans don't need to buy magic cards to consume. FF was an underserved market that still had a big western autdience.
The other best ones are probably legit videogames or anime, although I don't watch anime enough to know what's popular. I'm also not sure there's a big enough videogame franchise to compete, and the biggest active anime franchise I know of (one piece) already has a direct competitor.
>>96172448I use beta REBs and alpha BEBs (also alpha disenchants, but that card is crept out now) - they weren't insanely expensive at the time though
They're sick, not gonna lie.
>>96172448I spent $120 on a playset of beta REBs when the A25 version was like $1/playset
>>96172430>real question. is there any UB crossover that mtg could do that would actually out perform Final Fantasy in demand and sales?I can think of ten Anime that would outsell it actually
>>96172457>One PieceUnlikely anytime soon.
>DBZPossible, would be successful but I dunno if it'd beat FF.
>NarutoIn current year? No.
>AvengersWe're getting Marvel, so we'll see.
>BlizzardHighly unlikely because Hearthstone is one of MTG's main competitors.
>Dota 2Dota 2's a weird niche popular thing I dunno if it'd sell that well as a set.
>LeagueThey're making a League card game so that's probably off the table right now.
>HoNWhy.
>Proper 40k setThat's certainly possible and would sell "good" but not gangbusters, 40k people already spend all their money on 40k.
>Proper BG3 setWe basically had one, also not really UB.
>Capcom vs MTGA neat idea, just sort of an all-star set of Capcom shit? Again, would do good, but not greater than FF, I think. I think people overestimate how much 'lottery cards' matter, too. They're a boost, not the main drive.
>>96172430Grand Theft Auto UB to match the release of GTA 6.

>>96172487I don't think GTA players know what MTG is.
>>96171713The difference is and this would a rude awakening to wotc, is that FF only made those numbers because FFags are insane whales who will shell out thousands of dollars just to get a shiny version if their husbandos and waifus. Spudroman and Avatar wont reach the same heights, let alone 99% of other UBs because they dont have a fanbase that is both willing and able to shell out money for overpriced stuff on the spot. And even then, look at the Spiderman cards, even if you look at them from both a design and power level perspective theyre unexciting and phoned-in. JotC and Cocks doesnt realize this and think just because FF made a gorillion dollars day 1 then any pop culture collab is going to one up the last one; it wont.
>>96171752go to arena, pick a starter deck you like and play vs other people's starter decks.

>>96172404no, you retard, I'm simply rejecting the stupid commie slogan that completely ignores reality, if you want to boycott wizards and its products with another competitior, I'll be the first one to advocate for your cause, because that's what capitalism is, voluntary exchange of goods and services, and not "when company does bad thing I don't like"

>>96172527
>>96172527NTA but that's not capitalism. Even nomadic Africans practice "voluntary exchange of goods and services"
Capitalism is when industry is privately owned, hence the "capital" part of capitalism. The owner's capital makes more of itself through the ownership of the business or industry because it turns a profit.
>>96172528>the same linksThe Order of the Sacred Torch happened last weeked...
Also, what do you want to know about my decks? I run two paper Premodern decks with only EX / NM old original cards (no proxies). A Goblins deck and a Reanimator deck.
I lost pretty hard against a Stasis deck this Sunday with my Gob one, which was to be expected, but had a very easy time against it with my Reanimator one since I could simply just continuously discard my hand to either Putrid Imp or Zombie Infestation. In fact, in one game I just ended up killing my Stasis opponent with the Putrid Imps and didn't even had to reanimate any of my dragons.
Chances are I am going to take my Reanimator deck to the tournament that's happening 3 weeks from now.
>>96172539Nintendo stuff broadly COULD maybe outdo FF, Pokemon in specific, but Pokemon also has its own really big card game that already attracts the collectors. Zelda/Mario might do something, but who knows. Nintendo tends to hate... Giving their IP to anybody, basically.
realistically, a fate / type moon collab would beat FF
>>96172430>You know what that means. There's going to be a second FF set at some point.Good. I look forward to it. Let this one breach the spinoffs. Let this one bring in more esoteric ideas that we DESERVE. Give us more modernized mechanics. I want a colorless Venat legendary creature. I want Dresspheres as equipment. I want a Sky Fortress Bahamut Station and a Vayne who Melds with it to become The Undying. I want the Highwind vehicle. I want Faris, I want Krile, I want Princess Sarah, and I want Eiko, damn it all.
>>96172547I'll be honest, I never clicked the links past the first time since you just spam it over and over (and I assume people are in the same boat).

>>96172572>never clicked the links past the first time since you just spam itEach link is different though... It sends you to the latest top tournament that happened, which I even list bellow the number of people who took part in it.
There really isn't much to talk about it here though, hence why I just post the list and move on...
I am still hoping more people will give the format a chance given the current state that everything else in this game is right now.
Besides Premodern and Old School, the only other format I would consider decent was Pauper, but recently it's been so unbalanced that it no longer seems enjoyable to me.
Regarding the deck photos, I've been meaning to do that for a while, though I keep slightly tuning them both with the constant meta changes / matches I end up facing. Plus I'm also lazy so I just haven't gotten around to do it...
I've recently added one more Goblin Goon to my Goblin deck based on the list that ranked 3rd in the latest Duress Crew event and I found that both worked fairly well (I was running one to begin with), but I still can't seem to beat Stasis with it.
Your BW control will surely have an easier time though I think, specially after you sideboard, but it's always a rather "grindy" kind of match... I don't really like that Stasis has gotten a rise in popularity again, honestly.
Also, luckily LGS is trying to push Premodern a bit, but I somewhat feel like it's not doing much. It amazes me how kids these days just keep on eating the literal slop that Wizards of the Coast keep dishing out. One expansion after the other within the time-frame of 1-2 months... And each worse than the previous.
If it weren't for Premodern, I wouldn't have touched this game again.
>>96172625Ideally from putting out a better product. Realistically from financial engineering, lobbying, and using your capital to buy out the competition.
>>96172457>>hon (lol)I laughed
>>96172127Comic artists have been able to sell their original act since the 70s.
>>96172457Hot take, I don't think any individual anime franchise could outperform FF besides maybe One Piece (which has its own card game, so it's probably the least likely to get its own set). I think your best bet would be some full sloppa Shounen Jump medley so you can hit the broadest audience possible. If you can open a pack of Magic cards and pull an Itadori Yuji, Kobeni, Neji, Yamcha, Chad, Leorio, and Inosuke at once, you'll make more money than the company is currently worth.
>>96172568>entire deck is waifu spam, assuming they use Fate GO and not just FSN>plenty of magic and other gimmicks for spells>tons of servants and creatures to pick fromI could dig it.
Iโm going to pre release tmrw for edge of eternity. What are the go to cards to get for the drafting and what money cards to look out for?
>>96172726Nta, but I think it will be hard to hit the same high that FF did. Classic FF hits the nostalgia hard for a lot of people born in the 90s or earlier and it's a staple for performative nerds on top of that. Ironically FF being in a slump as a franchise is actually beneficial for the set, since people are so deprived for good FF content. That's hard to replicate for other franchises, where often people are suffering from fatigue and oversaturation rather than deprivation. Avatar theoretically is in a similar spot to FF, but it's a much smaller franchise.
All that said, we'll see how this Spider-Man set does. It'll prove whether they can overcome fatigue or not.

The R&D and commissioned art is by far the most time consuming part of the process, and theyโve assuredly had to plan for all of this well in advance knowing marvel wouldnโt let them use their characters digitally. I donโt think wizards has ever actually lost money on a set when you remove the cost of r&d and art from the cost part of the equation, so it would literally be free money with no downside and assuage a lot of the concerns from comp players.
Unless their contract didnโt allow that either for some reason.
>Hasbro sees Japan as a "... potential gold mine of potential licence partners for Magic."
Animutranny won. He literally memed anime mtg into existence. What anime franchises will you expect to come into MTG in the following years, /mtg/?
>>96173075Who the fuck is animutranny?
I have to say I actually thought duskmourn was halfway to a great setting. I enjoy the idea of a fucked up world of random rooms and monsters that a bunch of people have to navigate because it opens a lot of interesting questions about how their factions and cultures would develop, kinda like the IKEA SCP.
But they just couldnโt help themselves from doing Stranger Things and faux 80s horror slop. I feel like a lot of the people obsessed with the โVHS horrorโ aesthetic are secondaries that donโt even watch the slashers.

>>96173083Ironically, I think I'd've liked Duskmourn more if it had more of a sense of hope and there were at least some more peaceful tracts of The House. The sense that Valgavoth is infallible was too pervasive, a hopeless domain is not fearful, it's just dreary.
They even recognized that in the narrative, saying Valgavoth for most of Duskmourn's history has kept many safe spots for people to linger and survive and rekindle their fear through gain, but then in the same breath they dashed that on the rocks saying that now that he can draw in new prey from outside, the peaceful spots are being deleted and Duskmourn becomes the endless doom spiral that they already knew was unappealing.
I'd make a Stiflenought deck for her.
>>96173075Probably not any seasonal stuff, those are too short lived for wotc to really capitalize on. I'm guessing on the stuff they do go for they'll pick a popular running manga and then (ideally) time it right after the anime comes out and gets popular with western audiences.
>>96173104Itโs also just pretty absurd that Valgavoth has apparently been near oldwalker levels of power for quite some time (even after the mending he could open a door to other planes with great effort), but he never managed to harvest a spark? Not a single soul from duskmourn ever ignited? Ever? I think they also said he was strong enough to fully block the phyrexian invasion, somehow.
Not that itโs relevant now with the omenpath BS.

>>96173093No one I know whoโs an actual vocaloid or utau fan liked this lair. The art was super fugly and has nothing to do with any of the music anyone actually loves from producers. So how do I survive prerelease tomorrow? What's the secret to not getting my ass beaten immediately?
>We could have great UBs like Elden Ring, Silent Hill, Zelda, Wheel of Time, 40k or GoT
>Thanks to FF faggots eating the slop we will have at least a decade of mass media lowest common denominator UBs even if they flop to try and grab sheckels from nerds, casuals and retard coonsomers
Sounds great honestly I canโt wait to see the Rick and Morty UB. I really canโt pray for Hasbro bankrupt enough.

>>96173181It's not that weird to have a plane with no known walkers from it. Also, being able to keep planeswalkers from leaving a plane is no small feat. The only known instance of it was the immortal sun, which required a spark to work. Moving between planes, however, that is technologically mass producible for anybody with the know how.
>>96173192No because just like LOTR set you were not โforcedโ before to buy UB, now is different, they are shoving down your throat this crossover shit and they expect you to buy and eat this garbage in whatever flavor of shit they make it. Now is unavoidable

Someone explain to me why you would ever want to buy packs. I suppose there's the idiots who gamble for pay day with rare stuff, but that really all there is to it?
>>96173236Yes, but the transferal process took several million souls to fuel.
>>96173249How else are you going to build up your card pool, retard? You forget to take into account the commons and uncommons.
>>96173263Commons and uncommons are a few cents each, and they'll crash even harder within a month. You save huge amounts if you just want to buy specific cards for a deck instead of endlessly fishing with packs.
>>96173236The entire plane of Mirrodin was a machine, built over Argentum, with the purpose of harvesting a spark. It was also pre mending.
Karn is the only true instance of successful spark transferal(from Urza to him) in mtg lore.
>>96173249>I suppose there's the idiots who gamble for pay day with rare stuff, but that really all there is to it?Yup, also casuals who are only buying a couple packs as a novelty. Any sane person only opens packs for Limited.
>>96172430It think one thing a lot of people miss is that FF isn't just "one" IP, it is actually 18+ related IPs with overlapping fanbases. The FF UB stuff was pretty much lightning in a bottle and can't really be repeated by any one IP even if they release additional FF sets.
>>96172503Yup, as I said here
>>96172430No crossover will ever reach the same profits that Final Fantasy gave them, there's literally nothing better. They just mentioned how Lord of the Rings took 6 months to generate what FF did in a day. Lord of the Fucking Rings.
They're not stupid, they know this. And so the path forward is simple, any of us can see what the most profitable next step is. More FF. A second FF set next year, a third the year after, this is the most money making thing they can do. So they will. Guarantee it. Expect more FF sets.

Expect more FF sets.I doubt follow up sets will do as well as the first set. I'd more expect a sharp drop off between the first and the second FF set. More versions of Cloud, Terra, Zenos, Yuna, Zidane etc. are not going to sell better than the original novelty of favorite "FF character as a MtG card."
>>96172569It's kind of fucked up that Lenna isn't even on a card, speaking of FF5. Galuf, Faris and Krile at least show up.
>>96172950That one is hard because 5th and Ice Age are also excellent. I tend to lean towards 5th edition in almost all cases though. What a great set.

>>96173287>More FF. A second FF set next year, a third the year after, this is the most money making thing they can do. So they will. Guarantee it. Expect more FF sets.Got no idea what kind of contract WotC and Square Enix had for this set but one potential wrench would be having to renegotiate for another set. Of course Square Enix would want a bigger slice if they're posting numbers like that.
>>96173349To be fair, we're judging almost entirely on commons, uncommons and starter deck cards. The few main set cards we've seen besides don't exactly enthuse me much, admittedly.

We even have a mutual link
>>96173355>one potential wrench would be having to renegotiate for another setI mean, is there any world where it's still not massively worth it? Even if you have to pay Squenix like 5 times more for the liscence, it's still got to be the most money makingest thing they can print.
So this is what await all of us in this game? No more โWhich plane will be next setโ but โWhich franchise will be the next setโ in an endless spiral of prostitution? Maybe is a good time to leave itโฆ
>>96173349Final Fantasy was an embarrassment when it comes to flavorful adaptations of the cards it was supposed to be representing. Haste Magic is probably the most egregious example since it was such an easy card to get right.

>>961735161. They missed a lot. It's 16 whole games, there's plenty that slipped through the gaps, even if they're not critical fan favorites.

You have Web Support which is just a flavor keyword for graveyard abilities you've seen from past cards and more recrntly in TDM, then you have Mayhem which is just Madness with less mechanical baggage. Webslinging is just a Spooderman themed Freerunning from ACR. Normally these commons and uncommons should give you an idea of what to expect but so far its not really doing it for me
Webslinging is THE worst mechanic of all time.
I'm shocked that we've gotten to a place where I can look at Companion and have something nice to say about it. With Companion, you at least had some semblance of the keyword's flavor matching its implementation.

Understand this:
NO CORPORATION EVER ADMITS FAILURE.
It is ILLEGAL for them to admit failure. Fiduciary responsibility means admissions of failure equal lawsuits with substance.
This is how the corporate world works.
A CEO with no interest in a particular field enters a company in that field, sucks the IP dry, then leaves before it crumbles so they can still put "10x'd Gigazoomer Ultrabrigade's profits!" on their resume. Then blame the collapse, THAT THEY CAUSED, on the next guy instead of themselves.
The entire corporate world is built to encourage self-destructive shortmindedness.

but if you mean "get into" mtg as in "busting packs and drafting for fun and profit so that you can build a competitive deck and enter sanctioned events, and then eventually maybe cash out and recoup a significant chunk of your investment", then, see the previous replies to your post.
>>96176067whenever new spoilers come out it brings tourists here to screech about the things they've been ordered

>>96175438You save a citizen in danger and the hero enters the scene.
>>96176363If you don't have any attachment or investment in this game there's no reason for you to play, the art is bad, the gameplay is dogshit and it's expensive, if you have people playing sorcery tcg or flesh and blood it's better to start on those.
>>96176035That isn't controversial at all - it is what most people expected to happen. The only people complaining about Hero don't understand how aggro actually plays out (read: Arena shitters who leave the game as soon as they see turn 1 mountain, Hero, go).
>>96176388I thank god white and green never got any good 1 mana ETB triggers and nightmare was banned
one of the most cancerous combination of cards you could have on turn 2 is
>mist elder frog>pixie>nightmareand every turn opponent loses 2 life and discards a card and you put another +1/+1 counter on your frog, and that's just 2 mana per turn and never stops
fact its 3 colors kept it back
>all time sales record
Wait isn't this good news? It means we are gonna get more/better products and coverage in the future.

>>96176440>>96176035Only people with no deckbuilding sense believed challenger was the issue
Its the most replaceable card in any deck its in. There are almost a dozen other red haste 2 drops ready to take its place. Its competing with all of them
Heartfire was the ONLY truly oppressive one mana red drop because its the only one that could snowball off just 1 mana invested, other than Mako in its dedicated discard shell. Its the only card that opened up sequencing with 1 & 2 mana cards thanks to manifold mouse. Who the fuck cares about emberheart + manifold? They're both 2 drops, you need to drop them on turn 3 and be very vulnerable interaction and sweepers.
Hired Claw needs you to dump extra mana into it to grow
Swiftspear reverts to being a 1/2 end of turn, no snowballing
I mean I guess stromkirk noble is legal lmao, not like that's a real card compared to heartfire

>>96176458The art, the gameplay, the non-jewish practices.
>>96176451Anon, the issue isn't that it is the best selling set of all time, it is that the metric doesn't tell the whole story. UB Standard sets (of which FIN is the first) have a massively inflated MSRP and there are now less cards in packs / boxes than previous, to boot. FIN also sold heavily in the collector / investor / scalper market which mainline Magic sets typically don't do (Pokemon "investors" also jumped in on FIN for the first and probably the last time, further inflating the numbers).
FIN is a fine set. That isn't the issue. The issue is that it sets the stage for Hasbro / shareholders to do more of the same but instead we instantly see Spider-Man and how mailed-in, bland and boring it is and you clearly see that not all UBs are created equal. In fact, FIN is actually the only stand-out so far in terms of quality, design and product. Every other UB offering has been "ok" at best and bad / awful at worst.
Ok hear me out. Yes UB in standard is shit. But look at this thing. It's adorable.

>>96177380And there we go, there's always a catch.
Still, in this issue, it has no relevance.
EOE is going to be such a tiny blip and go by so fast because the normie mainstream tards are all going to be spazzing out about UB slop. Itโs a throwaway set making Unfinity space themes standard legal that nobody cares about.
Iโm tired boss
>>96177389Yes I'm sure a former NoA executive's book is more indicative of the future than literally every decision the company has made since about 2001 when they massively tightened creative control over their IP. There's also Colonel John Jameson//Man-Wolf as Huntermaster of the Fells//Ravager of the Fells but that's not new so who cares.
WHY IS EVERYTHING A LEGENDARY CREATURE NOW
Also, Mark basically confirmed this set was meant to be smaller at some point and, according to him, they felt they could do more, but the subtext is that it was Assassin's Creed-sized, and they had time to pivot away after Aftermath unlike with ACR.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0XBtux2KgM It's somewhere in that video.

>>96176640>The game that intentionally fishes for whales? As much as we talk shit about Collector boosters and cards having 6 art variants, WotC will never dare ditch uncommons and outright introduce multiple higher rarities than Mythic with mechanically unique (and usually meta defining) cards exclusive to those rarities:
>Common>Rare>Super Rare>Majestic>Legendary>FabledWhat a fucking shitshow, no wonder whales treated the game like a speculative asset rather than try to actually play it
>>96177930The reason for everything bad happening to MTG, is EDH.

You have to know that a specific rare is sought after or particularly powerful to have that gambler's rush when you pull it
With a mythic even a clueless new player can know he pulled something great
I don't think special treatments alone can replace the mythic rarity, we'd probably have ended with shortprinted rares if mythics weren't introduced

>>96177930I was thinking if all these legends would matter in deckbuilding. like having more copies in your hand while one is on the field is a dead card until it gets removed, and they have to or they win the game by themselves.
then I thought if the overabundance of legends would affect the removal spell design. think meddling mage type effects
but then I remembered it's wotc and rather than punish legends they'll just print more powerful ones instead

>>96178456This is cool.
>>96178651Miles Morales was made in the Ultimate Universe where the Ultimate Spiderman original (Peter Parker) was killed by the green goblin and the rest of the "sinister six" of that world.
