>Previous thread:

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

None, it's the hobby-check time. Post whatever you are working on lately but not necessary painted minis. Terrain-making, rules-brewing or simply assembling your minis is a part of the hobby as well.

I want to play with some good old barbarian tribes smashing skulls but I want the tribe customisation and expansion part to be present in the game as well. I noticed that most games like Brutality or Tribal skip this aspect altogether. Is there any system that lets me generate deities, rituals and customs to base the warriors' stats and abilities on them? I want the TRIBE to be an impactful factor in the TRIBAL warfare.

Stargrave squads. The first few I'm building "straight" but there will be room for cross pollination.

Think I would have been happier with a spray of bone then a white drybrush rather than drybrushing both. And the Vallejo Xpress is quite viscous, has little capillary action. Did notice some bubbling but they are not as hydrophobic as say, Contrast. Still, it's only rock and roll. Maybe a drop of IPA on my brush might cut them a little.

I'm finishing some minis that were half painted in a drawer, and also some that need some Tufts and snow base to become 100% done.
At the same time, I'm printing zone mortalis proxy terrain so I can build a customizable and hopefully claustrophobic city/underhive board for my Five Parsecs campaigns.
And once I have printed enough pieces, this will be my painting/modelling focus for a few weeks.

So even if those Tech Priest robots above were genuine GW models, but he would use them to play OPR or Stargrave or whatever, then it would be welcome in this thread, because miniature agnostic games allow every miniature.

Not really and the phrasing is clear on that but you are free to have your opinion. Arguably with how popular 30k has become they don't qualify for "falling between the cracks" anyways.

I don't like drawing lines because things don't really fit neatly into lines. 30k is currently considered by GW as a mainline game (one can argue whether it really is), and the fanbase has changed a lot compared to the time when, 7–8 years ago, it was a boutique line of miniatures with expensive leather-bound fluff + rules books attached to it. Back then 30k fit nicely into /awg/ but it already had its own general, not that that's something that bars discussion of a game outside of things like Warmachine or Infinity when one of their editions dropped and we saw /awg/ threads going lightspeed. Lately, I've been on a live-and-let-live approach, so when I saw those Myrmidons, I just looked at them, smiled at how much love had been put into them and scrolled past even if 30k arguably isn't too alternative anymore. The rest of those companies are obviously /awg/ material, hell we've even discussed epic armageddon or other GW games here over the years so that alone should allow any non-GW wargame/mini.

Making another little scatter piece. Going to affix one of the loaded wheelbarrows I did up onto this base. The plan is to build up the cork rock in PVA to form a crude "hill" or pile. Then I will cover that in a texture paste to create a solid surface where I will then throw down some basing mix to create the appearance of a pile of dug up earth. That alongside the wheelbarrow I figure would pass for some light cover for a figure in a skirmish game setting. Or alongside some of the other scatter pieces to create a larger array of cover in a formation based game.

I'll post an update when the texture paste is on and dried to report whether or not it worked how I am hoping it will.

I think the closest would be some GURPS books that discuss how GMs can create that shit for their own games.

The easiest would probably be a SoBaH hack - make it so baseline warriors can access only mundane traits, then add some tribe specific ones, and then add supernatural ones that depend on your gods and ancestor spirits but demand some kind of sacrifice, restriction or ritual to access. Something like - tribe prohibits use of ranged weapons in exchange for access to say Tough trait or something similarly powerful.

Some people just hate on OPR for no real reason, Warfleets is fine, plus you can use whatever you want for the ships. Theres none of the lore background so I guess you cannot play a narrative or lore based campaign at least not without some input or level of thought from yourself. Its fairly well balanced and the ships are all pretty customizable to however you want to build your fleet, as long as you use the Force Organization rules things should be fairly balanced.

It's my favorite fantasy rank and flank. Billhooks proper is an amazing late medieval ruleset that for me is almost perfect. The activation system/turn sequence, the cavalry rules, the morale routing mechanic, the initial scouting phase that no other game has really done before.
The Fantasia supplement is very enjoyable if you love the base game, which I do, but some hardcore fantasy anons have complained that there isn't enough monster profiles or spells. That's a fair complain, but since it's built up on such a solid foundation I am not too bothered by the fact there isn't 100 different army lists of monster profiles. As for spells, I love the spell system, where it adds cool effects to the game but ismt all powerful like in Warhammer Fantasy. I like the spell mechanic where some powerful spells take multiple turns to cast.
If you have any questions let me know, I play it alot

It's awful. It's a half hearted bolt on to the historical game and it shows it. There's no real difference between races, you basically have something like 4 or 5 traits that you can buy to bolt on to the unit to make it "fantasy" whilst the monster rules are plain awful - one generic profile and 5 traits you can buy for it, one of which is literally just "+1 wound" (the base profile only has 1). There's no interesting units, no distinctions between monsters, nothing to distinguish wolf riders from elven light horse, or a troll from a war elephant. If you enjoy shallow games then go for it, personally I recommend Oathmark or Midgard.

I really, really wanted to get into Amoured Clash because it is a little bit 19th century rifle and sabre, a little bit "uranium"-punk and obviously recalls Epic 40k when it was cool but man, buy-the-starter-set-to-play-the-skirmish-game-but-here-are-the-unit-and-mission-cards-and-the-full-game-is-over-here-in-this-book-and-you-can-just-buy-two-one-player-starters-and-then-two-one-player-starters-to-play-the-optimal game

Maybe at a pinch I'll buy the Brit and German entry boxes and use the Fistful of Lead VSF rules.

Update on the dirt pile scatter piece. While the cork rocks piled up and slathered in texture paste worked, there are certainly better ways to do it. I used the cork rocks with weight in mind, given the scatter mix has earth and real rocks in it, I thought a big clump of milliput might end up making it a little weighty. Just with the texture paste this one is already quite heavy. For an alternative, I thought of using a clump of crunched up tinfoil. I initially used the cork rocks to create a more natural hill look. You could probably pull it off with the tinfoil. I know some guys use it to save space sculpting large pieces with milliput or green stuff. Though even with the gaps in the large cork rocks filled in with smaller cork bits, I had to slather on a considerable amount of texture paste. Luckily I have a bunch of it that is drying up so I just used a bunch of that. Decided to extend the base by adding a second smaller base to it by strapping it on with some styrene I had laying around and fusing them together with superthin plastic cement. I also found a little shovel and stuck it in a pile of texture paste to add to the ambience.

Now I will put on the scatter mix And affiix the wheelbarrow to the base.

I can tell you that people have tried to reboot it twice and neither time did the models look as good as the originals. First time they tried to make them look more realistic and I think the company went bankrupt and renamed themselves, the second time was a kickstarter that stuck closer to the old art style but had a really limited scope and may or may not have delivered yet.
Prince August bought up a ton of the old stock and some or all of the old molds and sells new castings from them.

Turning out alright, I think. Just gonna add more rock chunks and gravels onto the pile, paint the shovel seal it all and call it done. Maybe throw a small tuft or two down somewhere if it looks good.

Overall not disappointed with the outcome, but there are easier ways to go about it in terms of structuring the hill itself like I detailed in the previous post.

Probably gonna make a little tent thing out of some canvas and the broken A frame scaffolding piece there to go with this and the other two pieces I did today. Sort of like a mining camp, or work camp collection of scatter when it's all together, but generic enough that it will fit plenty of different settings. Got this Renedra cottage I'm working on too, from an old civil war box set from Perry I got a few years back. Along with all the hay bales, hitching rails etc it'll make a nice little homestead layout for some wild west action, perhaps.

Remember how he claimed PP's shitty prints are of better quality than hard plastic kits? Whenever people were posting pics of PP's prints he was having a massive meltdown and claimed those were all old pictures of the first-batch prints until someone Anon posted his minis confirmed by PP customer support to be printed with their miraculous "new resin formula" and he ended up having a mental breakdown.
Funny thing, he stopped to post the moment PP's assets were transferred to SFG. Perhaps the based PP Basher-kun was right and that guy was either a PP's intern or Matt himself.

Not able to paint them till the weekend unfortunately. I bought a Sidhe medium army and they've only just arrived.

They're very Conan-esque, with some of the heavily armoured hero models looking like Chronopia characters (not surprising given the history of the game). There's no coomer models (except possibly the unique sorceress), but every unit does have female variant models and these tend to be waif-like with breastplate instead of the Gael's thick-thighed waifus in bikini armour.

The sculpts are extremely clean with minimum faults. I did spot a tiny, barely noticeable mould line in the hair of the sorceress - but it's so small I'm not even sure if it is worth dealing with (I can only see it looking at it from certain angles). There was also a tiny bit of flash around several models' swords/boots, with more little bits of flash on the dragon riders who are covered in a row of spikes. It's not really an issue - the clean-up was minimal, I didn't have to deal with any big pieces of flash, there were no miscasts or anything like that. All in all I'd say the sculpts are very clean and well made.

The cricket bat swords are probably an acquired taste. I love them. The Greatswords are as big as the elves themselves and I think that's pretty funny.

The only sculpt I don't really like is female retainer who is in a sort of executioner pose. Her silhouette just makes her look like a blob of metal.

I wish HFminis was still open so I could get some more Kev White elves to go with these. Not sure if the proportions would work but the faces are the same.

Two factions right now: UNSC (Spartans and now ODSTs) and Banished (Brutes and Elites)
There's rumors of 3 more factions on the way. Not hard to tell your guys from the other side since there's only 3-6 miniatures per side. All-Spartan teams are usually 4 guys unless you're bringing the Master Chief, Brutes are cheaper and more flexible in that regard. I expect ODSTs to be even cheaper, it seems that the intent is to bring them in teams of around 8.

Anonymous No.96227789 [Report] >>96227796 >>96242254
>>96227685
He's fun and fairly strong in friendly games, but he's very luck dependent and not really competitive. He's the strongest Spartan unit by his statline, but his gimmick relies almost entirely on your command dice rolls and he doesn't come equipped with a ranged weapon unless you buy one for him.

Atriox on the other hand, manages to be both the strongest Banished model AND buff his whole team AND is like 2 points cheaper than chief AND his hammer has a ranged attack profile.
Anonymous No.96227796 [Report] >>96228009
>>96227789
I should also note that while Chief is strong, he's only one model and most of Flashpoint's gametypes are objective-based. Chief isn't the guy who should carry a flag or a power-seed or be sitting on the hill, he can maybe carry the oddball pretty good. But, he's built for killing, not objectives.

The only named characters for the ODSTs are the limited edition Buck and Dare minis right now. The other ODSTs are unit types like Captains, Lieutenants, Bullfrogs, Firebreaks, etc. The multiplayer vibe isn't going away, organized play even has seasons with participation tracked online (Mantic is shipping the leader of next season a Spartan statue with their face sculpted on it, leaders in each region will get a smaller generic statue).

Nah it's literally the opposite
Whoever told you that is retarded

Combat is a models attack stat + 2d6 vs target's defense, if it meets the defense value it hits (ex melee attack of 5 +2d6 vs defense of 13, you need an 8 or higher to hit). Then power of weapon + 2d6 vs armor, every point higher than the armor is a damage dealt. There's also many ways to get additional dice into those rolls.

Outside of any of the rest of the stuff about Warmachine as a game, the core resolution system is excellent.

yes, they're plastic. The ones I've gotten were actually harder than normal gaming styrenes, they tend to tear or shatter if you try to knife off big chunks so you need to get out the saw to convert. I haven't tried model glue on them, I just used superglue.

if you poke around in the archives for the last few months, someone's been scanning a bunch of the old Warzone models. There's also all the borderline Warzone models in Void (Bauhaus, Capitol, and Mishima in particular). Now that Prince August is "running out" of some stuff it's worth checking out, and Mishima were always getting the shit end of the release stick to begin with.

That book is an early expansion for the first edition of Warzone. 2e was widely regarded as a bad idea - they did a whole bunch of the same gutting availability, "streamlining" rules and making armies five times bigger that Warhammer 40k 3e did. But with almost zero warning, and months after the 40k tournament scene took off. Then instead of actually finishing the main factions for 2e they blew all the dev time on a side project for a year. The edition change was so sudden a good half-dozen releases hadn't even made it to store shelves in the US before they were either illegal or had to have their rules completely replaced.
Anyway I'm saying you should play 1e Warzone, it's good and very silly. One of those games that clearly came out of an RPG, you can even make your own characters for it.

Anyway this critique used to hold more weight when warhammer was the only other big game and named characters were just upgrades to generic archetypes like chapter master/captain vs named chapter master.
But now more and more games are doing this named characters are default thing and warmachine looks like way less of an outlier. Warhammer did it with primarchs being so much more powerful than chapter masters, kings of war for some reason went from generic leaders to named heroes in its newest release, I can't name them all but nearly every new game seems to do this now

Celtos has some cool characters but (at least for the elves) nothing that's really big and eye catching. I like Drakken Sul, he's a big armoured elf with a sword bigger than him. The Elder Fire Serpent maybe, but I don't like his model.

The Gaels might have something. They have kings and queens carried on shields by retainers, and large chariots. Or the Fomorians, who have minotaur warleaders some of whom are very heavily armoured.

But to me the main "thing" of tabletop wargaming is the spectacle of two painted armies/warbands clashing on the tabletop. So I hid my crew ii at the back because they were awful, really. They and the Feds were XPress colour and that is glossy, doesn't really flow or like water at all. Speed paint 2.0 (scavenger in purple only) handled the best and had a lot of flow, almost too much. Citadel Contrast (the rest) has the best colours I think. Sketch is too dark and blotchy I know and I should go back and paint some details but I just want to play some games with my gf and brother.

In terms of goals and mechanics, it's This is Not a Test. I just straight up run Necromunda games in it with minimal adjustments. You could make a custom Wasteland/Underhive deck if you really wanted, I suppose. I sell it to the uninitiated as "Necromunda, but as good as you remember it being". Has the advantage of crossing over well with almost any grungy SF warbands. The game is really tightly put together, the author playtests the shit out of pretty much everything before he puts it to paper

Zone Raiders has better settlement and tech upgrade trees for the warband, the actual combat is extremely cover-focused and it really benefits from having a lot of vertical terrain. It's also a lot higher-tech than Necromunda, after a dozen games or so everyone's more like Spyrers than Ash Wasters or hive gangs. Having to recover your own casualties makes gameplay a lot sweatier once things start to go south and naturally forces warbands to bottle out (or even negotiate cease-fires) in a pleasingly organic way. If you're running only 2-3 warbands you really need to randomize secondary objectives occasionally or all the warbands will wind up specializing in just one, with larger groups that takes care of itself. It's much more "anime" than the others.

Last Days has a bigger focus on building your gang's territory and interpersonal tensions, and a lot more PvE. It's a zombie movie game, but it scratches some of the same itches. Combat is a lot less lethal than Necro in general, until it isn't. It rewards stealthy play and building up non-combat infrastructure. The Seasons supplement has some nice additional equipment and errata, but the actual Survival mode in it is pure masochism.

>Stargrave
Is a Frostgrave hack with more flexibility and less bookkeeping. It works fine. The "pirate" mechanics are great for simulating the Arbites crawling up your ass when you get too big for your britches. I prefer other stuff but I wouldn't turn up my nose

If your friend is new, and does not have a 40k Army, then opr is not the really easier than Bolt action. It's benefit is that you can use the army you have and just jump in, but if that does not apply, you can just as well go and play something else

What about houseruling TinT so you have to recover your own casualties there too? Would it improves or break the game?

Also when you said you prefer other stuff other Stargrave, do you have a specific game in mind?

Well, TNT for one. Stargrave is a game I'll play if someone asks but I'm not going out of my way to run a campaign or GM for it.

>recovering casualties in TNT
The houserules would have to rework most of the postgame economy and movement systems. ZR has much looser scenario design and more movement tools; most of the TNT scenarios are designed around the existing limitations on movement and the economy assumes you're not constantly replacing gutshot juvies. In ZR recovering wounded and the shooting/cover systems effectively work as a sort of heat sink for all those extra movement options, and the entire game is written around gradually replacing your first warband as you upgrade your clan's biotech and manfacturing capabilities.
So it could be done, but I'm not sure how much it would add to TNT. You could certainly use the much harsher "hard mode" survival table for characters who aren't recovered, maybe also use the old rules where unrecovered OoA models can't scavenge.

Heavy Gear. Units have a type, what unit type you have in your squad determines what objective they can perform. So, if you take basic bitch grunts, they have to hold the ground, if you take commandos they have to assasinate enemy or steal shit from their backline or something.

I woke second Malifaux. It doesn't get much more dynamic than both players picking a rotating pool of objectives every turn.

Thanks for the suggestions, but can you two elaborate a bit on it? I googled and no one really covers Objectives. I get there are Strategies and Schemes, but that all I was able to find. I think OPR's simple rules allowed him to ease into it.
This is a man that get's confused at most of the board games we play. So I know complexity might throw him off.
After just like 15 ish minutes he was picking up most of the rules and even telling me things like "Oh ap 1 so I add +1 to your defense rolls."
That's really huge for him, he usually doesn't get most of the rules of the board games we play.

Both players share once Strategy that's their both trying to accomplish, sometimes asymmetrically as attacker and defender. It's worth up to 5 points. You can score one point a turn with an option to once a game score one more of you do something extra.

At the beginning of the game you also generate 3 "schemes" to choose from which are mini objectives. They are worth 1 point with a optional way to score a second point. The scheme you choose dictates what schemes you can pick from next turn once you complete or abandon it.

I don't remember all the schemes and strategies off the top of my head, but most are not combat focused and tend to instead be about taking actions to create markers in specific locations. One of my favorite schemes is "Make it look like an accident" where you score a point for pushing a specific enemy model off a building, and extra if they are below half health at the end of the turn.
