It was pretty standard if I remember correctly, the red is khorne red basecoat and drybrushes of mephiston, evil sunz and wild rider. I can't remember what wash I used though, maybe black mixed with purple? I think cream is ushabti bone, recess shaded with dark brown and highlighted with screaming skull and pallid wych flesh.

Here's the solution to your problem my friend.

>remove from packaging
>clean up the models well
>prime
>send her a pic of the set primed
>say "alright, I got some time and cleaned them up and primed them, which one should I paint first?"
Shows that you're making progress on her gift, sets yourself up to pick up and paint later, and it keeps her involved in the painting process.

Got the free model of the month from GW - a 10th Edition Blood Claw - with the intention of turning him into a Blood Angel Assault Intercessor. Turns out in the new 10th Edition Space Wolves codex, Blood Claws have bolt pistols rather than *heavy* bolt pistols.

The more I look at this, the more I'm thinking I might be using bitz from another kit to set him up!

I've kind of fallen out of the habit of testing brushes on a surface/thumb/etc before applying paint to models. Just been lazy with it. But man it really does make a difference making sure your laying paint down properly before touching the model each time you load the brush.

Test models are the real protip. Always keep a couple random primed minis to test your paints and washes on. I used a couple of stormboyz since they have different textures on them. Skin, teeth, metal, fur, cloth/leather.

Yup. I agree. I also keep a piece of cardboard to test coverage and opacity.
Sadly, I ended up thinking my last test model looked cool so I just ended up painting him. I will probably use a stormcast next or something.

Okay, maybe you will have some idea. I try to attach this (3D printed) mini to some kind of temporary base for painting instead of the one that she came with as it would be otherwise hard to paint both. However, when I tried to make holes on plastic bottle cap, they won't hold her in place and trying to drill 0.8mm for wire didn't work either. It also seems so delicate that I'm seriously afraid of doing anything rough with it. Any ideas how to hold her in place?

Had idea like that but previous experiment proved that even when I apply CA removal solution, it simply don't work and once I glue two 3D printed resin parts together, they are glued for good, somehow, and would rather break than separate.
Anonymous No.96249741 [Report]
>>96249715
You just have to glue the bottoms of the pegs to the top of a jar or a cork or whatever. When you are done, just Cut through the glue with clippers. You are trying to carefully keep those pegs intact for no reason. They don't matter. As long as her shoes are ok you could cut the entire peg off and just glue the mini down. As long as you keep like half of the length of the pegs you won't even notice a difference.

It looks like when you tried to drill it cracked or chipped? Try going up in drill sizes (Assuming you have the standard PCB drill kit), and the hole doesn't have to be very deep.
Otherwise, just bite the bullet and paint her on the base, you won't die, and it's a useful skill to practice.

There is no best brush. But what you want is shorter, and less, bristles. Some brushes are longer and/or have a fat belly which is normally good. In this case you do not want that, you need a more "triangular" type brush.

Now that I somewhat have the hang of things, I'd like to make my guys a little more my own. The only problem is, I have all these guys I already painted in the Mars scheme. Should I start over with a custom color scheme, or do something else to set them apart? Or do i just deal with it?

I keep coming back to look at those Spire guys from Conquest. They've got a nice fleshcrafty biomancer aesthetic that I rarely see. Those are solid but the bowstrings probably need a second coat since there's a few spots they've gotten tagged with a duller purple paint.

The halos are cool; what did you use for the stringy flesh-like strands on the smaller left guy's halo? Looks like either jute string strands covered in glue or some sort of UHU glue that can be stretched out?

Right on the money friend, jute strands with some coats of white glue. It's specifically plumber-sealing jute, for when they need to connect 2 threaded pieces together tightly. The strands are more loose then jute rope, and thus easier to work with

I have doubts of the left pauldron being too big to just replace it with a DW termi pauldron, and I want to replace the sword with some sort of necron weapon (I don't know if a printed xenophase blade would look good). Any suggestions for this?

Yep yep the 0 and 00 are the shape I am talking about. For those super small details you do not want long, floppy bristles. That's like trying to write with a pencil taped to the end of a pool cue. You can, sort of, but you're making it harder than it needs to be. The reason they still hold plenty enough paint is because the whole brush isn't just sloppily scaled down like a lot of manufacturers make them. The base of the bristles is still the same as a larger brush and holds some paint but simply tapers much faster so you are not flopping around long hairs and too much paint.

Yes, find a shade or wash or whatever you want to call it that looks right on top of all the parts of the camo. Paint base color, paint dark daggers, paint light dashes. Throw wash (probably a brownish green) on the whole thing for shading. Then maybe a second darker one in the deepest parts only. Consider highlighting, then don't.
Profit!

Super quick question since it can't hurt to try
I'm trying to base something similar to picrel, on one of those round 25mm bases with the coin slot in the middle; problem is, I wanted to do bricks/wood planks/cobblestone and I can't think of a nice way to make that work without chopping off that beam at the bottom.
Bigger problem obviously is that, without the beam, the model itself doesn't really make much contact with the base, so I'm afraid no amount of super glue will make it stand up
Am I just screwed or is there something obvious I'm missing?

YouTube hasn’t been as helpful as I wanted. I’m curious if it’s worth making a texture paste of my own or if there’s cheap versions available o do the same job.

My current plan was to mix some mod piece and sand with brown paint until I get a texture paste to slap on, then dry fit all the little bits so there’s already an indent to glue them in.

Just stippling wet paint onto the model with the medium drybrush instead of brushing it on dries so much more evenly. It's how I do brush primer.

Drybrushing zenithal is rather self-explanatory, HOWEVER, it's not as smooth as an airbrush. Drybrushing white onto black will look streaky, you will want to step up through grey, for example. NMM done this way is unfairly easy.

What you can't do and nobody will ever do without one is a chalky looking, obviously airbrushed gradient. And that's a good thing. Of course the main thing you can't do without it is get perfect primers super fast or large flat areas of absolutely smooth coverage in seconds. Even if you spend years perfecting these things, any rando can pick up a $30 and do the same with less effort. Which is why they became ubiquitous (that and retards thinking a tool can improve skill instead of practice).
Nobody will ever become a better painter because they bought an airbrush. But they will have a whole lot more spare time to work on getting better.

MMF has hundreds of good busts. Or if you are in 2010 and don't have a resin printer you can just etsy them or get one of the 20 people at your LGS who have them to print a few for you. Artistan Guild, Witchsong and uhhhh....Archvillain I think? make typically fantasy-sci fi busts for starters. AG makes 5-6 busts from their regular figures every month now. This one is from Witchsong.

Then you should lean into this painter's style and commit to it. If neatness is not going to be your thing, think about what you do control. For this one, values. You could go 30% or 50% brighter in your lightest lights. Not quite all the way up to white but on your lightest edges and maybe the root part of the smoke. Then shade down all the way to near black.
If you squint down at the mini, or change that photo to b&w, how well does it read? Hitting those raised areas in particular is very doable with shaky hands, and a GW mini is already sculpted to assist with that.

They do not really do busts but they have nice presupported 75mm display versions of a lot of their figures. I have also scaled up and supported their old smaller ones a few times myself. Sometimes it works, sometimes the scale change causes them to look very off. But they are super fun to paint, usually pretty simple. A nice refresher after a bunch of grimdark shit covered head to toe in as much faff as possible to justify $50 32mm single figures made of 3 cents of plastic and such.
Besides just being a nice break from skulls and spikes and power armor and shit, they have a lot of nice smooth areas with room to hone blending skills.

I'll also comment on the hair because that's the most jarring part for me. You slapped a contrast on them and the shading/highlights are not even remotely close to how hair really looks irl. They just look like someone poured dirty water on them. Best part of the entire paintjob are the pink flowers but the top one has some gloss finish in its shadow which looks unnatural and instantly draws the eye. Look at paintings anon. The standard daylit still life will have warmer shadows than the highlights. It's why real painters from life paint early in the day when possible. Outdoors with landscapes it's a whole different mess, but very often shadow is the warmest part of a piece, this is doubly true in portraiture.
Or if you want to think of it in more illustrative, storybook terms you can look at movie posters or the Hildebrandt Brothers' art.

Didn't want to do it the first time on something I'd put more effort into. Learned a lot trying it so hopefully 2nd attempts better. Any recommendation for ratio of resin to paint for tints light enough to still be clear enough to see through? Was thinking FW sepia ink, you just go by eye? the other troll anon didn't explain but in paintings often the highlight is cooler because it's reflecting the blue sky on an incredibly sunny day on an even slightly reflective surface. You can see this effect prominently on darker skin in the shade, where they're getting all the blue coating their face. And blue and purple are not complimentary or opposite colors. They're right next to each other.
Warm/cool has no inherent wrongness or rightness on shadows and highlights. It's about the environment you're simulating or the material you're making. And metallics almost always have a hue shift going on in their colors. Think gold in 2D paintings, how it always is an orangey brown to a yellow. And not a yellow to a brighter yellow.
Anon going from purple to blue to green is a fine idea and follows one path on the colorwheel and would visually look good.
You can do (purple and) blue to green too. And when I was coming up for a color scheme for cadians that looked cool but I was bored of green so instead I went green to blue.

Here's a retarded image i made with a not so good color wheel but if you went into photoshop and messed around with the eyedropper tool you'll notice these colorwheel curves everywhere on everything. And they all take the same shape of these arrows, some are more shallow, some are longer etc etc. Nothing stays one exact hue from shadow to highlight. And from shadow to highlight things can travel clockwise and get cooler or travel anti-clockwise and get warmer. It just depends what you're recreating.

You did a good job googling just now but still wrong, seethe-kun. You've never looked at art and don't understand color, but the correct reason highlights are cooler in a lot of art, as explained correctly already, is that we do it earlier in the day. The reason for this is that (in the northern hemisphere anyway) sunlight is cooler in the mornings and increasingly warm culminating in sunset. Monet's famous Haystacks series illustrates this.
Not cooler because of any reflections. It's the way that the atmosphere filters sunlight (called atmospheric perspective, well known from no less than the Mona Lisa). The best light for painting is in fact on an overcast winter day, before noon. This is when light is the most accurate for color rendition.

is EXACTLY correct, period. Why do you stupid fucking reddit trannies shit up my thread on my board with your midwittery? You reek of "got interested in painting due to Youtubers during Chinese Virus lockdowns". The election tourists of minis painting.

>shadows are blue
They're blue when and for the reason I already told you. This is way over your head. Anon's idea for a scheme with warmer shadow and cool lights is not just workable, it's accurate to the real world and very common in classical masterpieces, for the reasons I already demonstrated.

>Mona Lisa
>Monet
fascinating pseudo art enjoyer. I imagine you've never painted anything on canvas.
Atmospheric perspective is terminology used to describe light filtering as things get further away in the distance. Using the Mona Lisa to describe that effect instead of literally any landscape painting is embarassing. And it has nothing to do with what you're talking about.
You even say in your post that light changes, and can be warmer on the highlights at sundown. You're literally just angry at me for being clearer and easier understood than you.
>overcast winter day, before noon. This is when light is the most accurate for color rendition.
Not what i was arguing or even saying. I don't care what time of day you want to recreate. You're trying to rigidly define what light does and what people should do with their miniatures. Despite the fact that many different materials exist that go through different hue changes, many different times of day exist. Many different light sources. And all of that is subservient to what looks fucking cool. And in miniature painting any hue change looks cool. It doesn't have to even be realistic.
>>96263603

No color is "predominant", in fact. And you're dodging anyway. I said, before you did, that quote "it's a whole different mess outside". You are failing art 101 here. You're remedial. And you're off-topic because nobody has discussed shadows outside beyond what I pointed out (before you did).
This is why when I paint portraits from life the colors used in shadows are reds and the colors used in lights are blue, unless it's late in the day in which case we bring in more yellow to both.

Opposite is the case. I accurately pointed out that what anon wanted to do with his miniatures works, and why. Which is because it's not just rooted in classic art and modern illustration, it's accurate to life as well. Btw I don't "try to rigidly define what light does" I objectively know what light does. Which is one of the many reasons I know that a mini with warmer shadows than the highlights objectively works.

Agreed. Same with finish, people just slop matte on everything unless it's gore then it's shiny. At least on larger format things like garage kits I try to have at least 3 distinctive finishes. Might be too much on a small miniature but it's something people don't consider but should.

You do see a lot of nogames display painters using a lot of temperature manipulation these days, at least. GD this year was full of it and Crystal Brush has been all about it for a decade at least. I agree with your point a little bit. The top of the boobs and shoulder should probably be a little brighter since they're pretty close to the stomach, but it's not nearly as rough as your pic makes it seem since it's assuming middle yellow and middle green are the same shade of grey to your eyes.

Adepticon has painting seminars, too. It's been a while since I've been to a *real* con like that, but I wonder, anon ... could there be anything like that happening in your neck of the woods?

>And here, see, you take this giant brush, and dump this super opaque base coat on to the whole model. I know, it's hard to wrap your head around at first. I'm sure you're so glad you came to learn this technique
I shouldn't gatekeep, I want people to enter the hobby.... but still.

These are people who've never looked into mini painting and just decided to join a seminar on a whim because they were at an expo and it looked like fun.
This is literally how my girlfriend got started.

They're not that hard to lure in. Girls like arts, just find some cute models as a gateway drug.
Mine started with turtles, now she's collecting Necrons and has read every book featuring "her boys".

People will always be entering the hobby, it sprang up from nothing after all.
Gatekeeping is necessary to prevent that from becoming a flood of those who are not really interested, who are temporarily taken with an aesthetic or a desire to fit in or just to get some views on youtube or whatever.

The more people who want to get into the hobby at a basic level the more people I can impress with my painting skills and be less concerned about coming off like a weirdo when my main hobby is painting little dudes to a high standard.
I really don't see a downside. Maybe if I played warhammer it would be annoying, but even then, so what if I were good I'd just be beating all the new people and getting to teach them things.

No, what happens is that the hobby becomes a watered down social activity for normies and a breeding ground for political statements of whatever IRL topic is hot at the moment, like how D&D now has wheelchair rules and MtG is just a hot mess of mass media tie-ins.
Those are not the worst that could happen, those two things are barely the beginning of what will be done to our games and our culture.

Ask your LGS (if you have one) if there are painting classes for minis. If not, ask the owner to set one up. There's usually decent turnout even if there isn't a big painting community, if the class is advertised well enough.

Also, go to a convention if you live near one, I've had all my best classes at GenCon/Adepticon from both pros and skilled amateurs.

I'm just gonna dump 30 grand into a local painting competition where I fly in some e-celebs so I can get their discord messages and network with them. If a new random destination painting competition starts up sometime this or next year you'll know who.

can I oven them at a really low temp for a few hours to dry them out or will that make them crumble?
