TQ: I've played D-Day (and other naval landing) games with rules for offshore bombardments, counter-fire from coastal batteries etc... and frankly it just all got a bit too much. The kinds of timescales and responsiveness of fire (except from maybe smaller DDs) just didn't align with on-the-ground tactical decision making. Much better represented as a pre-game preliminary bombardment.

It's honestly quite a challenge. I feel like combining land and sea might need a really specific conflict or battle, ideally with ships providing fire, but also landing crafts and maybe multiple small islands or suchlike?

I seem to recall situations where there was a ship supporting landing craft, and the marines that landed need to get up a hill and take out a shore battery, so that more ships and troops can be brought up. It was some age of sail battle, might have been northern wars or something.

American Civil War.
It's recent enough, many companies make models in lots of different scales. There's plenty of rules to choose from.
Most importantly you don't have to paint hundreds of white cross-straps and/or trousers like you would for Napoleonics.

I don't like singe bases and movement tray, so I go for multi-basing but reduced frontage since you can use them for many rules. So two bases on a 50mm or 60mm frontage, etc. or three Hail Caesar 40mm bases for a unit, etc. will equal 120mm.

making charging, melee and missile attacks work is always a challenge in these kinds of games.
imo units should be able to shoot into melee provided their line of sight isn't blocked by friendly units, and units charging should end up in base contact, rather than in contact by a single point. Just my opinion, nothing related to Tactica 2 rules.

>>96280634
Maybe Normandy in WW2? Allies have Sherman tanks and Infantry, Axis have Panzer IV tanks and Infantry. Easy to find the uniform and tank colors, many miniatures available in 28mm, 15mm, and 6mm.

Then you can add more units as you get more comfortable with your rules: Mortars, Light vehicles, Tigers, Churchills, Panthers, Nebelwerfers, Artillery, Aircraft etc.

WW2 infantry seems surprisingly unpopular as STLs. My guess is it's a mix of it being boring, there being a great many plastic kits to compete with, and WW2 enjoyers being unpleasably detail-oriented.

Thanks! Yeah I wanted a helicopter for some scenarios with air assaults and "get to tha Choppa!!" style extractions, and I was looking for a Mi-8 or Mi-17, but they are very expensive and would frankly be too large for the tabletop. I went with the Mi-2 because it was only $9 (I ordered it from Poland) and it's small enough to be used as a prop in game, even if it's a little less accurate

The only miniatures I've been able to find that actually have realistic proportions instead of ridiculous heroic scale and have good detail are from RKX miniatures and Studio Historia, both in 28mm.
RKX has a very limited catalogue, so the chances of them having what you're looking for are slim (Berlin soviets, winter US, fallschirmjager, winter Ger and Canadians). Also, the variety of poses is not that great.
Studio Historia does kickstarters and from the reviews that I've read the're not great. They seem to be behind in schedule releasing their kcickstarter minis when they are already launching the next one, and their minis look good on render, but are hard to print due to thin parts.
Keep in mind that I don't have a printer so I don't have actual experience with miniatures of any of those creators, I just try to collect files in hopes of using them in the future.

Yes, best bang for your buck: Perry are nice but more expensive, and their casting quality...well, sometime it's incredible how such nicely sculpted figures are cast so poorly. It seems to vary by batch somehow.

Warlord are IIRC old Wargames Factory figures...and terrible.

What this anon >>96293319 said. Warlord's ashigaru have a ton of online reviews because that's the sprues that came in the Test of Honour starter box. Everybody agrees it's a pain in the ass to assemble. Do yourself a favor and go with Fireforge if you need a decent sonae. If you want a skirmish force there's nothing wrong with Grey for Now and Zenith Miniatures metal minis except their prices. I found Footsore to be more carved than rounded and Perry Bros/North Star to be a bit old school proportionned but you do you.
