Power creep went in such a terrible direction for this game. There is no point in trying to find synergies or most combos when I can just cast my Baneslayer Angel + Mulldrifter every turn and if my opponent stumbles once they die because I drew 6 cards and made 5 tokens on the turn they fumbled and they can never recover from that value.

This is the kind of creature design we have nowadays. They are pushing this shit so hard is unreal meanwhile Control and Combo decks keep decreasing more and more and becoming unplayable because when one of those decks become viable faggots cry.

I don’t expect WotC to fix this shit because they are completely useless designers but the actual status of the game with literally a format dominated in 80% by Aggro is infuriating

It's disgusting and FIRE philosophy should be replaced with FIREMARO.
With very few notable exceptions, early MTG was balanced around pretty functional trifecta - Spells and Instants providing immediate effects, Artifacts and Enchantments providing long-term value and Creatures being the beatsticks and main win condition. It was not perfect and there was a lot of overlap between these elements, but in most cases it was a solid design philosophy.
Nowadays it's all went to shitter and biggest culprit are creatures that do all the mentioned things at once. Between that and color pie being treated like a joke, modern MtG is just a soulless slop.

They're not the same thing, by definition. Sacrifice is a keyword action that tells you to put a thing into your graveyard, and exile is a keyword action that tells you to remove the thing from play.

Distinctly though, these things don't care if something modifies what happens to the card after you start doing the action, just that you did the action when the rules told you to. If an effect says "sacrifice a creature," and then something else says "creatures that would go to the graveyard are exiled instead," then the creature was still sacrificed.

I like where creatures are on limited, it used to be the case you could almost always ignore one drops and I think what we have now is more interesting. Commons are much more complex than they used to be and I think I enjoy that more, I'm not sure how I would feel if I was a new player.

For constructed I don't know man, aggressive creatures are brutal these days. I enjoyed soldiers and getting extra lords with mockingbird. I don't like my only play being playing a creature on 2 and dying on my opponent's turn 3 or at least drawing dead. There are ETB creatures but those are sorceries that make a card and it feels it makes the games lazy. I get some issues people have with Vivi but I like its design, it's a backloaded card, what I mean is that its power grows the longer it stays around and I think those designs are cool and hard to make. The issue with that deck is that Cauldron just makes every creature a clone of it and that makes it basically unkillable unless you have some very specific removal in a very small window and that brings a lot of issues. No idea about older formats because I don't play them.
Anonymous No.96285614 >>96285623

Youre correct. A sacrificed creature is dead and on its way to the graveyard. An exiled creature is moved to the exiled zone. There could be a replacement effect, i.e. when this creature dies exile it instead. But using Sword to Plowshares doesnt trigger, "whenever you sacrifice a creature" clause.
Anonymous No.96285615
>>96285571
Sacrifice is a specific keyword action, and so is Exile (though Exile also refers to the game zone where things are removed from the game. If you aren't told to sacrifice something by the rules text, it wasn't sacrificed, no matter where it's going. Creatures dying is not sacrificing them either, though sacrificing creatures causes them to die (because sacrificing is an action and dies is a descriptor).

If I'm reading your somewhat vague description correctly, you had an effect that reads like:
>Exile target creature.
and he thought that because it was leaving the battlefield, that it should count as sacrificing it. But that's not accurate.

The horrible truth is that UB is what's "saving" the game. By changing the target audience from Magic fans to pop culture merchandise consooomers, Hasbro has guaranteed Magic at least another 20 years of life, as well as at least 5 years of accelerated sales.

We are in a time of major economic upheaval, which is intended to culminate in no less than the destruction of the middle class. By shifting to a broader base of appeal and catering to whales first, Hasbro is making sure that they can sell to whoever emerges as the new Elite.

It really bothers me that they never leaned more into the tribal/kindred/whatever cards more. They've said they didn't like using it because they thought it was too arbitrary and/or too restrictive to card design, but they could easily just attach it to a specific tribe or clan (e.g., Mogg Trickery). It's not like they even reprint most of their cards anyway, and they're clearly perfectly fine with putting any sort of stupid subtypes on cards today, just look at how many fucking nontoken clues they've printed between Wilds of Eldraine and Duskmourn.

About your other point, I expect some of that, it's part of the set in a way. I liked the lands Lorwyn had, maybe the checkland soldiers got is a sign of things to come. I know they didn't like the tribal subtype and that's probably gone for good, Tarmogoyf cared about it, but it's true that the word goblin on tarfire looks strange, why is shock a goblin, what's going on with nameless inversion that makes it a knight and an elf? A fun, but ultimately fruitless kitchen table experiment to make ANY use of Anticausal Vestige in any form at all.
Inspired by the anons that kept insisting that it is a good card.

Deck can deliver 10+ trample damage on T2 quite reliably, or even on T1 with a couple of opening hand combinations
>colossus, 2 dark rituals, 2 entombs, swamp, (any)
or
>colossus, imp/oona's, 2 dark rituals, dragon breath, dragon fangs
But ultimately it's just too slow.
You get to deliver a solid hit but then the opponent's T2 comes around, their combo goes off and you are already dead.
And notice how Anticausal Vestige isn't even the driving force in this, his own deck, as an opener you always want to have a Colossus instead. Vestige becomes useful when the cooler guy (Bygone Colossus) isn't available, or in the rare case when the game drags on(once you have 2 or more swamps) and he can deliver his smaller blows in peace while also setting up some card draw for the next turn(so you can find a Colossus instead).

All in all, some fun, a lot of jank and I'm still not seeing it.

Thank you for reading my blog.

I remember one of the earlier talks about MTG design, by Richard Garfield.
He discussed good ability formatting. One of the things he stressed the most, is that nothing should ever be included in an ability just for the sake of flavor. Each card should be as elegant as possible. Its flavor should be clear in what the card does, and you should never add random flavor chaff to a card, because it makes the card harder to parse.

Just off memory, I remember he said something akin to "Doing this is one of the clearest trademarks of a bad designer."

It's harder to make effects worthy of the cost. They have to be at rare or above so they don't ruin draft. They don't hate mono color decks rather they design cards to fit in two color decks. Richard Garfield came up with colors as a way to make sure people didn't just play the best cards. Each color came with a strength and weakness so you had to play another color to cover the weakness.
Anonymous No.96288116

>Do they hate mono-colored decks?
Basically yes, but it used to be for a good reason. When color had mechanical meaning, an environment favoring mono decks can too easily become "which color got the most busted cards this time?" The whole point of color was to soft-limit how many of the strongest effects a given deck could access, without actually putting anyone on rails.

Now that all design revolves around Coomander and all colors can do basically everything, I'm not really sure.

There's a lot of variety, so it's not always so easy to see. But take a look at what they all do. Then you can sort of evaluate in practicality how games tend to play out and extrapolate if removing certain types of cards is more handy than others.

It's probably Red though. Red can cast responsively with its combat tricks from time to time, but it can only really handle getting rid of artifacts and things that die to the amount of damage it can drum up. If you put extremely fat creatures down, especially on a regular basis, Red starts to have trouble keeping up. If you make tons of creatures, (some) Red decks will have trouble keeping up. If you outpace the damage with life gain, Red will get stuck. Red can't really do anything about enchantments either.
Over all, the stuff Red can do isn't all that bad. Red Deck Wins is a thing that existed for years for a reason. But if you can drag Red into a prolonged conflict or you put down just the right card to disrupt whatever the Red deck in particular is trying to do, it's easier for things to start going wrong for it.

My expectations go in descending order.
Lorwyn Eclipsed: I see a lot of potential, I remember they wanted the conflict in Lorwyn to be more about pranks and emotions than violence and that kind of failed with most people but I really like the plane. Hype level highest of all these for sure.

Secrets of Strixhaven: I'm not sure what to expect, I don't think it will be another instants and sorceries set but I wouldn't be surprised in seeing more lesson cards. There's more to the plane than the school stuff but it seems to be implied it's about the school again. Not much against it, I liked my first visit to Strixhaven a lot.

Magic Event set: Don't care about the story really but do you know who I miss? Garruk. He was so completely perfect as a green planeswalker, even when he was losing he was perfect . Also fuck Loot. I'm expecting a bit more than the level of enjoyment I get from a core set but since they're taking so much time between Jacewatch episodes maybe it's really good and polished and this is the time they make me care, hoping it's a new plane.

Marvelslop: Don't give a shit, expecting X-Men. They'll print the serialized Hugh Jackman card and that Post Malone will buy for 30 trillion dollars so can't blame them. LTR was fun, FIN was fun, I would be more positive about it if I had not seen all the Spiderman cards with the Hero/Villain subtype and that's given me a really bad feel I can't shake off.

I wonder what they plan on doing with Arcavios. The theme of instants and sorceries becoming other spells through learning being a parallel to morph, along with enemy-color Elder Dragons, made it seem like they intended it to be a direct complement to post-Dragons Tarkir and their creature-heavy themes. Maybe the blurring of lines with this promotional art might suggest changes in color pairings like what they did with Tarkir Dragonstorm (or maybe the art director got lazy).

But anyways, I think FF money cards will shoot up in price as soon as the set is retired. "It was the biggest set in history" will keep it's momentum going for years to come as the masses of people will not be able to get over it while also having no interest in any of the game beyond FF. The FF cards will keep selling and going around in their own bubble just because they are the FF set cards. Rest of Magic will be playing catch-up and failing.

If the core audience stopped paying, that would presumably produce a more-or-less flat decrease in sales. However, that would show up in the data as non-UB having a higher percent sales reduction because the sales of normal sets are lower.

That doesn't matter. Final Fantasy is an instutition and is the defacto JRPG series for most normies (except in Japan where it's Dragon Quest). TES only ever broke into the mainstream with Skyrim and even then it doesn't have the same pop-culture reach that Final Fantasy has.
I want you to think about the last time you saw a TES cosplay at a convention. Or compare the amount of fanart/fanfiction of TES to that of Final Fantasy. This also completely ignores tertiary FF stuff like Kingdom Hearts.

Final Fantasy is probably only going to be matched by actual big guns like Pokemon or Star Wars. There was a period of time where Genshin Impact might have competed with it but I do not believe that GI has the same reach as it did at the height of its hype (similar 'height of hype' contenders would include Game of Thrones and League of Legends).
>Did you just miss the internet going berserk over them releasing Oblivion

The root cause is that they just don't have any understanding of the format and they aren't in control of it. What by control I mean that they don't have a grasp on how things work and what removing or adding a piece does to it. There's a 2 year pipeline churning shit and they don't have any proper processes in place to quality control what comes out of it and how it impacts standard.
Of course you can't get everything right all the time and mistakes happen. But the degree of the lack of control is so fucking astronomically bad that they would be better cleaning house and starting over at this point
