Players who are encouraged to be reckless and open to unconventional ideas are more exciting and interesting players. While repurcussions and failures are important to make big risks actual risks, quick death tends to be an extreme that DMs shouldn't employ as some kind of judmental punishment, but rather as part of the larger tone and structure of the game.

I agree in the sense that if you don't establish firm consequences for actions then Players won't care about your game.
Just don't fall into an adversarial mindset. Players should not be treated as the GM's opponents.

Good art, good advice. It's best to find a balance between encouraging fun and risky behavior because otherwise it's no fun, and encouraging creativity and cunning.

I was going to point to the armpits as a dead giveaway of that AI's style, plus the creasing of the belly and just the overall look of the shading. It's particular to this style but it's a really incestuous pool they're drawing from now so many of the 'amateur' gens look exactly like this. There's also the even more obvious tells of gobbeldygook jewelry and accessories, broken teeth, broken irises, etc. You'd have to be a genuine retard, a shill, or have never seen another piece of generative art to think this was legit.

I mean, I would, if killing them was a sensible consequence for whatever they did. But I don't run any games where players are incentivized to behave that way. In fact, because I work hard on group communication and setting expectations, I would be pretty blind-sided if someone suddenly went way off the rails, far outside the realm of things I expect to have to give them consequences for. And that's not to say they never surprise me, and sometimes I have to create heavy answers to what they've done.

Can't agree. The 'do nothing' character is essentially unplayable, as it won't do anything by definition.

The religious fundamentalist in a party where they aren't all of that religion is a functional character concept, even if absurdly obnoxious when taken to its natural conclusion. As is a political ideologue. Or really any mover and shaker type character that the party isn't 100% onboard with.

A do-nothing character is essentially out-of-character begging the player to break character to do something. A do-something character can at least be played around, shuffling them away from situations that wouldn't work well with them around, and keeping them in on situations where they can helpfully contribute.

At the end of the day, they need to act. There are plenty of media examples of characters who will go out of their way in order to avoid doing something. Don't want to fold laundry? Tame an otter and have him do it. But that secondary task is far more arduous than the initial task, and it would've been so much simpler and faster to 'eat the frog' and get it done and over with.
Alternatively, the character needs to have a conscience. Where they'll fight the task, but at the end of the day, they know it's important and resign themselves to doing it.
There are ways to make this character work, but I've been nogames for awhile now, so no anecdotes to share.

I used to take ridiculous risks playing a level OSR 1 character because if he died I’d just roll another one and that was fun for me. But when we started playing 5e, it became very hard to die, and I got stuck with a character in an experience so boring that I made an excuse and quit.

>>96323359
Exactly. The most retarded way to punish players is to use the law. That's boring. Law and "le Guards" shouldn't be this universally present force in the world. You are rather uncreative, if that's your only punishment for your players. A fantasy world should allow for freedom and not take place in a modern bureaucratic world. Why would the local count execute rowdy adventurers in a tavern for starting a brawl, if he can use them instead?
