I don't think I've actually played a game with anyone in 25 years (I did paint some figurines). Wierd huh?

I was talking to someone younger than me who said they played dungeos and dragons and they have only ever played it 'online' because zoomers can't schedule metting up with people to play and don't answer phonecalls to each other. What's the fucking point in attending another shitty zoom meeting? I always though one of the worst things that happned was Games workshop savaging white dwarf just to sell their warhammer crap and I guess sthat's when I parted ways (warhammer 40K was the worst thing ever to happen to tabletop gaming and RPGs). Is the hobby just dead now? Do you anaons actually sit around a table with figurines and maps and roll dice still? Looking at the board is like a lot of people having psychotic breaks and imagining what it would be like to play a game? There is a whole thread for digimon, do adults really meet up and play fucking digimon? I don't believe that.

I'm pretty much the same way. I download ttrpg books from the internet and just read the lore. I'm also a big fan of the Dune encyclopedia and Gods of Pegana for the same reason. I would like to play a game at some point though. I just don't have any friends that are into old obscure ttrpgs like I am.

People go through phases in their hobbies. Friends break up as they focus on different things in their lives, like having families, moving away, getting jobs, taking up different hobbies, etc. Sometimes people stick with something (like you have), or drift back to the things they use to enjoy, but not everyone. It's great that you can still enjoy the things from your youth, some others do as well, but not everyone does so.

If you want to start up again, maybe try to search out like minded people and start up doing it again? It may take some work, as you will meet a lot of people who only want to 'talk about the good times they had' and not actually play - people have different commitments now. You will also find people that don't want to do it themselves but want you to do it for their kids - be a free baby sitter basically. Others will want to do it but only in the way they misremember themselves doing it so long ago and will quit when they detect a flavour you introduce that isnt like the way they remember. Also keep in mand that many will still have commitments today that they didnt have as teens, as well as being older, slower, with medical problems and not able to stay awake for as long late into the night.

If you can get past these speedbumbs though you might be able to find a group of a similar age to play with.

The alternative is sticking with playing with younger generations, being the 'old timer' or 'Grog' in the group and biting your tongue as you watch them make all the 'obvious' mistakes you learned not to do years ago. It can be frustrating at times, but also hilarious if you stick with it.

Yeah, one of my two current groups has been going for about 10 years now and we still meet every 1-2 weeks, the other group is about 5 years old and we meet monthly.
We did online a bit during covid but went back to in-person as soon as we could. Online was better than nothing but its not the same, even the guy who's driving almost 2h on game night was happy to go back to normal. Same when my wife and I were on our honeymoon, online was better than not gaming at all for a year but we were happy to go back to in-person when we returned.

>I was talking to someone younger than me who said they played dungeos and dragons and they have only ever played it 'online' because zoomers can't schedule metting up with people to play and don't answer phonecalls to each other.
Not all zoomers.

I think about half of both my groups are late-20s which I think puts them just barely into the zoomer category and, like I said, we've never had any issues. Beyond that, I know the younger brother of one of the guys in my fortnightly group has a game of his own going and I'm pretty sure they're all early to mid-20s.

>Looking at the board is like a lot of people having psychotic breaks and imagining what it would be like to play a game?
Honestly, yeah. I get the same vibe. Wouldn't be entirely surprised if ~90% of /tg/ hadn't played more than 2 sessions in their life.

We had an in-person game but it just got easier to play online. I use Tabletop Simulator, these days. I'd say it's 60% of the way there. It's just a tabletop. Import maps and books and minis. You've got dice and sheets on the table, and move things around like you would at a real table. It's not great but it's not bad, and I'll take it over constant cancels. I still paint minis and have dice and physical books, but yeah scheduling is just way the hell easier, over a VTT and Discord call. I don't like the VTTs that try to turn it into a video game, personally. I like this one that just gives me a table.

Last month we got a cottage for one week. Had nearly daily in person games of DCC. Online we currently stick to Genesys, but since one of our players couldn't attend we decided to run a few connected oneshots.

Zoom call? Anon, I don't use webcams. And I treat running games online as a way to multiply my autism for props and terrain by a degree that would be impossible to do in-person.

Now don't get me wrong there is definitely a different vibe to playing digitally or playing in-person. But we simply use Discord to talk, and to keep track of notes and information the party gains. Sometimes pictures. Everything else is done on a Virtual Tabletop. Hence my confusion about you calling it a zoom call without a table.

They have figures, they have scenery. I easily can use background ambience and music, and there's no shuffling around trying to reach a spot on my physical table to add something to the map with a marker, I just use a tool and either draw it or slap down an image.
