i've done basics. Most of my proxies are repeats of things I already have that's just convenient for deckbuilding(signet, lightning greaves, sol ring, lands,etc.) Pretty much anything over 2 bucks that I want several dozen of.

I proxy almost exclusively because it's easier to order lots of cards at once. I've bought plenty of singles from Cardmarket, Chaos Cards and Magic Madhouse but if I'm looking to order two or more decks worth of cards, minus the ones I already have, then there's no better way.
My personal limits and the ones I try to insist with my friendgroup is to not proxy anything that would drastically change our existing powerlevel. It's a bit vague but unless you rank every card then I don't think there's a quantitative method.
As for Basic Lands, as other anons have said that's one of the best things to proxy since you can get cool ones. My Kosei deck has all its Forests as full art Ukiyo-e paintings depicting forests or trees of some sort.

The way to view it is that it's basically a free card in your hand at all times (assuming you have it on someone). The card quality can vary which is what turns some people off of it and this card psyche you out of a game if you were hoping for something better now knowing you're drawing a land next turn without some sort of way to shuffle/draw/mill.
It have a strange dynamic in the sense that you can never have that hypothetical card ripped from you hand but it is subect to being milled by an opponent. Sometimes you can even try and blow smoke about how crazy that next card is in order to have it milled when in reality it was a dud and you refresh the top.
TLDR the card is good but players without strong mental are unable to make use of it because they think of the negatives before the positives.

It's not 5 mana paid all at once unless you're that desperate to have it online instantly. It curves out nice with a 1mv body.

If you have dorks, you're likely ramping meaning the mana is less of a concern too.

You're falling into the archetype of people I outlined in the TLDR that are NGMI. You've locked yourself into the mentality of "what if it doesn't pan out" and you have to free yourself from that to understand the card.

You want the hard truth? Faeries were format warping busted in standard the first time through Lorwyn and have been completely torpedo'd by wotc for their sins ever since. There are the generic basic fetches like evolving wilds, ash barrens, and terramorphic expanse. There's also the two color fetches that ETB tapped that I never see anybody play.
