I'm still trying to wrap my head around Mechanicum listbuilding. Every HQ can take paragon blades and thunder hammers but there aren't any good melee units to stick them in, maybe Domitars or Myrmidons? But then the detachment system encourages to take like 6 magos/priests/arcuitors in every list, and at some point you're just wondering where to put them all, and how to outfit them. Do you just take naked pistol/chainsword priests and attack them to your backfield castellax to cast guide? Why do we have so many "reactions don't cost a point" abilities when most of our army can't react?

I'm working on a list designed to be Morturg's band of survivors from his Black Book testimony, and I'm having a fun time trying to make a list that complies more or less exactly with what he's stated to have in the books. Seven World Eaters, mostly axemen, a Librarian, nineteen death guard, two land raiders, a "grav-attack" so some kind of Javelin or Land Speeder and then Thallax/Magos Reductor. The rest of my list is going to be more or less normal mech, just because I do need *something* that can hurt a Land Raider.

Current plan for the infantry is that the WE contingent is six Praetorians or Heavy Breachers + Champ in a Land Raider and the Death Guard bring either multimelta HSS or Seekers for the libby to shroud.

>>96406646

They're a lot less tax-y in Mechanicum. A well-geared priest or magos is going to be casting cybertheurgy for +1WS/BS or S/T on a unit, shooting a melta or gravgun, fighting competently in melee and handing out high LD and Line 1-2 to their squad, so you have an Archmagos for your Apex det, 1-2 regular Magi for detachments and then 1-3 50-80pt Tech-Priests who are basically big, fancy sarges for your robots. They're expensive, but even non-fighty arcana Archmagi are going to bend most Praetors over just with sheer stats, they are worth it.

Why should demolisher draco only be able to fit ten? I get that it was like that in 1.0, twin Lascannons take up enough internal space to fit a full turret for a leman russ, presumably including the space that would be reserved for the loading mechanism and housing. The same space can be used to accommodate a demolisher cannon on a russ. So if twin cannons and a demolisher cannon take up the same amount of internal space on a Russ, why should the demolisher cannon suddenly swallow up 10 men's worth of space in a Dracosan?
Anonymous No.96406916 >>96406958

175 points (195 with flare shield) for a single BS3 demolisher cannon is not scary at all. Neither the weapons nor the defenses are anything special.
Space marines get BS4 demolisher cannons for 140 instead of 175 and they're not close to OP.
If you add flare shield it's slightly tankier but at 195 instead of 140 it's not really. Particularly if the enemy isn't entirely reliant on armourbane since it's just 13/13/10 and they don't even need a chainfist to tear it open if it tries to act as a transport.
Demolisher cannons aren't even good anti-tank. It's only 1 shot with dmg3, so it has a 0% chance of even popping a 60 point rhino if it moves at all, for 195 points, pathetic.

And if you spend 600 points to take 3 dracosans, it's Significantly less shooting output than one 365 point Kratos tank while also being over 3x easier to kill.

Don't think so. Lascannons are man-portable, the battery packs likely fit inside the turret. They don't take up extra space in sponsons after all. For all we know, the ammo space in lascannon russes.just sits empty, but isn't big enough to fit people into. Think a waist-high compartment, or maybe some sort of rack. Or perhaps, that space sits empty, and lascannon russes have a transport capacity of 2, but it's not depicted in the rules because it's useless

Missing a big tank with a small blast is harder than you would think.

You have a 50% chance to not scatter at all. If you do scatter when shooting at a kratos then scattering a 1.5" blast radius weapon 1 or 2" is still gonna hit the kratos in any direction.

So assuming you're only ever going to roll the worst possible angle a BS3 small blast is about as good at hitting tanks as a BS4 regular weapon.

In a fight of 3 Dracos with demolishers and double HKs VS 1 Kratos the Dracos will kill the Kratos but lose between 1 or 2 Dracos depending on who goes first.

Naturally evaluated purely as tanks the Kratos is better. Except the Dracosan also caries 20 dudes at the same time.

3 dracosans don't just kill a Kratos, they do it while dropping 60 dudes in the midboard at the same time. That kind of roll compression is quite strong. Especially since the Kratos is literally the most point efficient tank in the entire game. The Draco is better than many marine battletanks while also carrying 20 dudes into combat.

You fire 2 HKs per Aethon per turn for 2 turns. Thats 16 HKs out of 4 aethons over 2 turns. Thats like, 9 HP onto AV14 over 2 turns from just the Hunter Killers. Not even considering the lascannons.

Also aethons are the only war machine you can still takes in squads of 1 to 3 though personally I think 2 sentinel squads are the best.

The Aethons pretty good now ngl.
Anonymous No.96406993 >>96407070

actually when your 360 point unit of sentinels shoots at the kratos, it'd smokescreen (they don't have searchlights) and then their limited missiles are half used up which would render them nearly harmless and in total missiles+lascannon deal 3 hull points of damage out of his 10 points.

Dracosans adding another 1 hull point total from lascannons and their never-can-shoot-again 6 hunters add 3 more. For 450 points (more if they want to add any survivability with flare shields)

So a grand total of 7 hull points out of its 10 if you were able to see it with 3 dracosans + 4 sentinels costing 810+ points. Maybe if you add 1100+ points you can take out a single kratos and never have any antitank the rest of the game as your entire strategy was missiles that cannot be refilled.

And he can pay ~130 to easily heal 3-4 hull points each turn when he simply deploys where your entire army can't get shots.

And if you empty your entire army to kill a single kratos (statistically not even likely), that's zero shooting onto any of his transports winning every cap and your army drops to dmg1 shitty BS3 lascannons for the rest of the game that lose to the other 2635 untouched points of the rest of his army.

While demolisher cannons are absurdly large weapons that cn only be fit on a tank and would take up large amounts of internal room for the breech, space for what is likely to be multiple people to operate the gun, plus A LOT of space to fit the fuck huge shells, all of which is presumably separated from whatever troop transport compartment is unless you all want them to instantly go deaf when the thing starts firing.

Demolisher Shells are giant rocket assisted bunker busters, a single demolisher shell probably takes up more space than all the bells and whistles required to make two.lascannons work. Especially since the demolisher isn't just the barrel. There's a shitload of mechanisms behind the barrel and you're also gonna need at least one extra crew member to reload the demolisher that would not be necessary on a Twin lascannon.

Its a way more involved process.

not sure why you're replying to the actual math with your incorrect wrong numbers. It's 3 average wounds not 4. Over 2 turns the aethon squad no longer has any missiles left and the tank is still at 4/10 hull points and since you used only armourbane weapons, the Kratos has been shooting 100% unaffected by any status each turn. Then you're dealing 0.5 wounds per turn with your lascannons and have no actual power to the 4 sentinels at all. An aethon squad doesn't even kill one kratos if it shoots it for 4 turns of the game and the kratos never shoots them. That's absolutely pathetic. In reality often kratos turn 1 pops a few of the sentinels, sentinel scratch it, kratos has murdered every single sentinel over next turn or two and survived.

You average 2 hunter killer wounds and 1 lascannon wound through smoke over 2 rounds. thats 8 damage total assuming the tonka tank never shoots back, which is a fairly big assumption i suppose but I'm not too torn up if it does decide to shoot my aethons, they'll just return fire anyway.

Question: To any Black Book owners out there-do they mention general company strength for the Legions? Specifically numbers, motor pool/ancillaries, and even further the Blood Angels?? Talking full compliments. Is it β€œvaries widely” or even going by the old assumption that a full 40k chapter (1000) is equal to one 30k company?

Ignore autistic lore in the novels/new books.

The first blackbook is very clear, see pic related. The way everything else is organised makes sense if its true (i.e. a centurion, a company commander is in charge of 100 dudes, hence the name, unlike nulore where a company is 5 trillion marines).

Of course the blackbook also is clear that legions began to vary away from these original numbers, but it says this tended to be at the chapter level. i.e. some legion's chapters (or chapter equivilents) could be a lot more than 1000, but generally a company is still 100 dudes.

meanwhile custodes have an entire plastic range AND an entire resin range

there is more desire to see, and profit in, making plastic versions of those resin custodes units (because 40k players are fags who apparently have an allergic reaction to resin unless the unit is OP then they work fine with it) than there is to make a new SoS unit, doubly so if that SoS unit is 30k only

10 man lasrifle sections don't do anything but collect line points for a turn and then die. 10 man veletaris sections can all do decent damage for their points cost but would gain no benefit from solar pattern cohort doctrine.

Also after you've blown your load the Arvus is a paperweight. You're paying 80 points per squad to give your infantry +18" on their first move.

Vanguard Sections with heavy flamers would be extremely funny with this strat so if you wanted to do this you'd probably split your forces 3 ways between vanguard sections, storm axe sections and lasrifle sections.

hmm

not for Volley Fire, because:

Vanguard (X) requires that the *last* Model in the Unit Controlling or Contesting the Objective be removed as a result of an Attack made by the Vanguard unit, which does not occur when the last Model which is within 3" of the Objective is removed as a casualty if that model is not the last model in the unit - there's no option for VP award if the Unit still exists, UNLESS that Attack causes the Unit to Fall Back - but only if the Attack that causes it to Fall Back is made during a Combat;

per the FAQ, the second condition is now:

>β€’ If a Unit that includes a majority of Models with the Vanguard (X) Special Rule has at least one attack made for it in a Combat that results in one or more enemy Units that had at least one Model within 3" of an Objective at the start of that Assault Phase either Falling Back from Combat or being Massacred.

so in the event that the unit Controlling the Objective at the start of that Assault phase is removed by the Vanguard unit in Combat, yes (but not any other phase, if you have a rule that lets you fight out of normal sequence for some reason)

this wording change may have been made because no Unit can Control an Objective if it is locked in combat - so for Vanguard, unless it's specified that the Unit Controlled the Objective *before* it was locked in combat in the same phase, there's no way to score on the original wording of the second point; the new wording allows the scoring while also gating it behind certain behaviours - you can't use Vanguard to score extra points by dogpiling units already locked in combat at the start of the phase, for one thing

What are you talking about, the second condition doesnt require the unit to control the objective, just be within 3" of it, which just happens to be one of the conditions (and a common situation) for controlling it. The wording change just adds Massacred to the list because RAW if you wiped the unit you didnt score, because the first condition says "controlling."

The thing that prevents dogpiling multiple units with Vanguard is the explicit wording of the rule after that clause that says it only can be scored once per objective per turn.

>β€’ If an attack made for a Unit that includes a majority of Models with the Vanguard (X) Special Rule causes the last Model in an enemy Unit that is Controlling or Contesting an Objective to be Removed as a Casualty.

the Model doesn't Control or Contest the Objective - the Unit as a whole does, so this provision can only refer to the Unit losing Control or Contest of the Objective, not "a model from a unit which is within 3" of the Objective"

you don't get VP for removing one Model, only if you remove the entire Unit that model was part of

>>96409023
you are correct; the first provision requires the Unit to be Controlling or Contesting the Objective, the second provision does not

I think you've got something wrong about de minimis there. It was a tariff exemption for packages under $800, not an $80 fee.
UK tariff is 10%, GW will have to eat that or pass it on by raising prices. They will probably bump up their prices a bit but not immediately, maybe they'll do it across the board like they did a while back.
It may be already be accounted for by their planned continuation of price increases on new products, which they stated to investors in their annual financial report a few months ago.
On average, new kits are 5% more expensive than they would have been if released last year, according to the report, and this will continue.

Anons, "last Model in an enemy Unit that is controlling" means the final survivor of the entire unit. Not the last model "of" the unit that was the last one in control range. It's the unit that's controlling the objective, not the singular model. That one model may be the only one in range, but it is scoring for the whole unit.

You need to wipe the unit.

Hi guys, genuine question about infiltrate. I had my first test game and infiltrate seemed super busted.

Am I right in thinking that, since you deploy all your infiltrators alongside the rest of your army who ever deploys first has a massive advantage since they can control everything but your opponents deployment zone? Like being able to freely deploy onto objectives.

This to me seems massively OP for any infiltrate heavy armies or just anyone with a load of tarantulas/recon marines,

Am i reading that right?
Are there any ways to count this? (Like 2nd ed augury scanners)

Fuck and double fuck.

I'm an AL player and it seems like you can just fill the board with cheap sentry guns and slap troops on objectives then just out score the enemy so there's nothing they can do. This feels to me like a massive oversight desu.

I don't get it like 2.0 was so easy to have infiltrators come on AFTER both sides had deployed their regular guys.
Anonymous No.96409913 >>96410137
>>96409820

The downside there is that you then have a giant pile of recon marines, which are incredibly overcosted. If you're AL or a similar faction that can drop a whole bunch of actually good infiltrators it'll get mean, though, I'm not aware of a counter.

>>96409867

Dynat's infiltrate ability works cross-faction, too. If you can still get a 40-50 model Levy blob from Militia, it might be possible to infiltrate the whole squad on the 12" centreline, react them 3" forward when the enemy moves up and zone them off every centreline objective with a big line of dudes, since they can't get within 1" of you without charging and they can't control objectives while in combat.

You can also do this with Thralls, which can't be routed in combat, but in that case they can actually get models onto the point without engaging you in melee, since thralls can't Reposition. Since you only want this screen to last long enough to deny a rhino rush and let you score R1, the cheaper and shittier you can get the infantry the better.

You're not right in the head if you think infiltrate now is stronger than in 2.0. Units that can infiltrate on objectives are like the perfect target for units with vanguard though. And they can't charge turn 1, but enemy units can charge them - which is pretty much guaranteed with the increased mobility of transports and such. And by the way, units can no longer grant infiltrate to their transport, another huge nerf.
And don't forget infiltrators have to stay a certain range away from the enemy deployment zone - which is basically what augury scanners did.

>have infiltrators come on AFTER both sides had deployed their regular guys
That was one of the things that made infiltrate waaay stronger than it is now. Even if you had to deploy first, infiltrators were put down after both sides deployed regular units. This meant that you could use infiltrate to always position your units perfectly in response to how your opponent deployed, or force your opponent to deploy extremely defensively and concede board control entirely.

I despise how influencers caved and instantly started hyping up the edition after the leaks because they get free goodies from GW. It's fucking horrible for the community, because they've effectively gaslighted people into liking 3.0 and making the switch just by saying "it's good, don't listen to the haters! Negativity bad!"

Ten years ago, this wouldn't have happened. 3.0 would've been trashed like it was during the leaks, and without the influence of the shill influencers, the community would most likely have turned on it entirely and it would've been remembered as a huge failure by GW and an example of why they should do market research and give a shit about what their customer base wants.

Now? 3.0 seems to be successful, so far. All thanks to the shills doing damage control after the leaks. Hell, it's actually better for GW that the leaks happened at all, it allowed damage control to be done before day one. Had the leaks not happened, people would've bought their books on day one and lost their fucking minds once they opened them. So now we're definitely gonna see HH enter the 3 year edition cycle hell 40k is stuck in.

All the other vehicles already have AV14 front and enough hull points to take a melta hit, you basically can't use the Macrocarid or Triaros anyway because it can't transport anything worth shit if it has the Macrotek keyword and the Karacnos is going to be in the back. May as well take a bunch of cheap tanks and boost them up to 14/13/10 7HP with amazing speed. The Venator laser is pretty mean against anything short of AV14, since D3 means it'll chunk dreadnoughts and EW TEQ, and the basic Krios gun is a monster of a template for 135pts.

Cool color scheme, cool design language, satisfying to play, lerneans are gorgeous models, fun kitbashing (Effrit, headhunters).
They're also a high skill floor army and are kinda busted when played well, so it attracts technical players. I do think their rules do a great job of embodying how tricky and nasty the legion is but unfortunately that's not something that's fun to fight (as opposed to more "honest" legions like world eaters or death guard or something). I really wish each legion trait still had a downside like in 1st Ed, something representing the martial hubris and arrogance of the AL to counterbalance their various tricks.

Their biggest flaw is that their lore is kind of lame sometimes and their community is almost as insufferable as DA, IF or NL.

I'm an Alpha Legion player so take everything I'm saying with a grain of salt.

I could Logistical Benefit some in with my primary detachment Primes, but putting the Archmagos in the transport means he can't use Battlesmith 4, LD10 Cybertheurgy, his free-reaction special rule or his ability to give a tank a 6++. Ordinarily, I'd just take a cheap cybernetica techpriest to give them Comptroller 1 and maybe some cybertheurgy buffs, but he can't go in the Macrocarid, so it would just be naked scyllax who can't score or react. Faction-locked Macrocarid kind of killed the unit, despite a solid statline.

Honestly mostly just their primarch but a ton of their culture comes from the Greek so a unit of AL hoplites would be insanely cool, I'm planning on doing up a squad of vet breachers with that loadout soon.
Alpharius himself in the books uses a sword as often as he does a spear, but we'll have to wait for the Omegon model to see if it's represented.
The one melee weapon I most strongly associate with the AL is power daggers, fits their underhanded and cqb focused nature so well.

I like 3.0 AL a lot, but I do slightly miss the old function of power daggers where they gave you an extra attack and the option of using them as a sneaky fast profile, rather than being your sole melee weapon. It felt more fitting than trying to fight a thunder hammer with a knife.

I do miss how versatile it was, but I think a change was need because of how stupid things could get (like in FotA, where you could give your warlord contemptor dread a tiny powerdagger to still get an extra fist attack on top of whatever ranged gun you wanted). No. After collecting 30k for a while, I genuinely have come to prefer resin models overall as they are easy to work with and modify, and have better detail.
That's for infantry/dreads/small tanks.
Large vehicles/flyers CAN be fucking awful to work with though, since you have a bunch of resin bricks you have to try align properly and they can all warp in slightly different ways.

I'm not trying to be a cunt, anon, but how do you block a Rhino? Vehicles can go through infantry unimpeded. And they will be able to disembark, considering the incoming squad has to remain 5" away from it. That's a broad enough area to disembark a squad.
A squad that can disembark unimpeded, mind you, as the Interdictors are forced to attack the Rhino you declared against. The one whose hull is immune to their bolters, and the one they need a 6 to reach.
Though I guess the Rhino wouldn't be able to declare an Overwatch, so that's nice.

It's not blocking the rhino's movement, anon. You react after they complete their move.

Rhino moves up towards an objective. Your tunnel snakes jump up in front of it. You can then try and charge the rhino before it can disembark which will entirely block the unit inside from getting anywhere near the objective (if successful) but even if you fail, you're still preventing the unit inside from disembarking their full move towards the objective.
At the very worst, you will contest the objective stopping them from scoring unless they kill your unit, and at best you will stop them from reaching it.

yes, the rhino driving through the unit must temporarily halt its move touching at least 1 enemy model in the unit it was trying to drive through, then one enemy anywhere in the unit can attempt to shoot it or melee it. Every shot or melee attack auto-hits, but goes against front-armor. So rhinos can't simply drive through enemy units to go to objectives, they could get popped and drop their troops far from it.

Any troops that can't be placed without hitting impassable terrain or being within 1" of any enemy unit just instantly leave the game.

>assuming in all cases your opponent chooses not to deploy within 9" of any edge of their deployment zone, on a 72"x48" board

Search and Destroy is a 116" deployment edge

Hammer and Anvil is a 48" deployment edge

Dawn of War is a 72" deployment edge

call Tarantulas 100mm around and say you've got all 32 spaced 2" apart (there's no worries about coherency and nothing is going to be able to move between them - in theory, then a line of angels could conga through the head of the pin exactly 1" from each Tarantula, but in practice, get fucked; packing them tighter just makes them eligible for bigger boys to bully them with templates)

that gives you a maximum coverage of about 190", so it can be done even on S/D but bolters are 1/9 to inflict a Status on each Tarantula and volkite is minimum 1/9 to inflict a Pen and at S5 is 1/9 to inflict a Status - the only saving grace here is that the Tarantulas are separate units once placed so units shooting them have to deal with them one at a time (blast and template weapons do not have this problem hence the need to space them out); melta at any range is almost a coin toss to destroy one, stationary lascannons are 1/9 to Status and 5/9 to fuckin destroy a Tarantula

each time you lose a Tarantula you have to plug that gap (it's no good relying on their free shooting - they can't Volley RAW, and they only get to shoot as Overwatch, for one model and one Reaction Point, or as Automated Fire); even on a 40k ice rink board with unimpeded lines of sight there's still weapons range to consider as well as unit types which don't care about heavy bolters, and the other guy can stand there and pick off each Tarantula in turn in his own Shooting phase without you being able to fire a shot at him, so long as he doesn't move

so far you've spent 1340 points for six footslogging dudes with bolters and chainswords and 32 roboguns so stupid they can't even shoot back if you don't move

Melta bombs and lascutters only allow a single attack. So yes, one hit.
Power fists and thunder hammers only have 2 damage, so a model needs to have three attacks minimum to destroy a rhino - and it better not fail a single penetration roll. Characters have better odds with more attacks, but a slightly below average roll means you just lost a character to a fucking 50 points tank.
Best bet would probably be a melta weapon, because melta bonus, but it is again one hit. That's a 50/50 in most cases.
The odds aren't as great as you seem to think.

Jump packs for Magi and allowing me to run Macrocarids of any keyword would fix most of the issues I have with Mech.

>>96410137

They don't take Ld tests from shooting and they don't count towards combat res, so they're relatively hard to rout. Rhinos can move over infantry but they can't stop while overlapping them, so you can still stop a rhino rush if you're in the right place and thicken your line directly in front of enemy transports. I'd rather do this with a Levy blob, since then you can react forward to zone harder, but Thralls are pretty good at forming roadblocks.

Alpha Legion (anti-melee), Raven Guard and Iron Hands (anti-shooting) and White Scars (free super movement) are probably A-tier. World Eaters is opponents aren't playing as anti-melee as possible are A-tier as well (but anti-melee exploits like AL trait, only counterattacking with flying transports, having your good unit in AV14 so WE can't hit it) - but against smart opponents WE probably drop to B-tier average.
