Totally dumb, but after some research I managed to find a grotty scan of the first Games Workshop commissioned novel.
After some classic GW fuckery, it got scrubbed of Warhammer references and published as "A Spell of Empire" by Orbit.
I first read about it in this rescued Stephen Baxter article on
https://pariedolia.weebly.com/nimh/oldhammer-lit-101
Which has some great insights into early GW if you are into that sort of thing.
Sill no luck finding scans of the original editions of Ignorant Armies or the Ian Watson books. Would love to see more of the illustrations.
same go file as last thread:
/d/XRKkbB
where can I find the books that have stats of various neutral or unaligned battlefield threats? Things like automated defense systems and planetary flora and fauna. I saw a few of em posted from older warhammer rulebooks I donβt know which ones they came from.

is there any demand for/existence of an industry of recasting these old sprues? seems a shame to let minis like this die out, especially with how fragile they seemingly are (although gw did rerelease them that one time I guess, although I don't know how much impact that had on supply)

There's some cool moments in modern 40k, but honestly I feel like most of the lore has been wrong turn after wrong turn.
Writing out the HH in general I think was a bad call. It was better left as this mythical past. Knowing too much about big E and Primarchs ruins the mystique because you get to see them make stupid ass decisions that no one with their supposed capabilities would.

The reason that's good though is because, frankly, it doesn't have anything to do with modern 40K. A person who doesn't follow the shitty nufluff could be reading that in a White Dwarf from the 90's and it wouldn't seem out of place. Modern 40K stuff is only good when it's completely indistinguishable from something that might have been written prior to 5th edition - the issue for me is I'm not willing to suffer through the endless, endless pages of nuslop to nuzzle out those few small nuggets of what used to be, and you can't even ask to be directed towards those and away from nuslop because the nuslop-gobblers will act like you've just suggested cooking and eating their newborn child and start screech-shitting at you. Easier to just not bother.
This came today. Mint package and minis. I must admit I am a happy man today.

I am quite big fan of numunda, I know some folk don't like it's aesthetic, but I quite like it's lore, I for example enjoy idea of new goliaths being unrelated to old ones, old ones being a house that went extinct and new ones took up the same name (something the books imply) and some old goliaths became new ones....
Also the silly stuff like plate armour wearing muscle bound dudes in a deeply religious area pretending to be almost lord of the rings style orcs. That feels proper RT idea.

Honestly I've been so out of the loop, I think the most "modern" thing I liked was the Shield of Baal campaign expansions they did in 6th edition. Always thought it was a pretty cool narrative with Hive Fleet Leviathan threatening and invading the Baal system and targeting the Blood Angels out of unfathomable xenos spite and hatred. Not only did I buy the campaign books but I grabbed the novellas, too, but I seem to have misplaced them? I dunno where those ended up.

Trying to plan out an edition agnostic DKoK list.
My idea was a company command squad, two platoon command squads, six ten man infantry squads, a ten man grenadier squad aka storm trooper squad, and a handful of combat engineers aka veterans that I can use to make a squad or two of various sizes, and a bunch of heavy stubbers, mortar, and Lascannons teams, and a heavy weapon platoon command squad.
All this supported by three or six teams of artillery crewmen that can be used alongside various carriage drawn artillery, like thudd guns or earthshakers. Maybe a Macharius for armour support that's cool and lore friendly and isn't just another Leman Russ.
Thoughts? I dunno about the death riders, either ten or twenty of them?

>Is 3e grog
One of several options, yeah.
>pros/cons
It depends on which version you're playing.
OG 3rd, black book-only is extremely limited. Vehicles and close combat were extremely powerful, especially sweeping advances. 3e was the last bastion of Guess-range weapons, which was a perpetual source of skub until 4ee killed them. Walkers always used Front armor in close combat, which made Wraithlords and Dreadnaughts a nightmare for S3 armies; it's why you'll see so many Veterans with melta bombs and dedicated Dread-killer squads in period armies. Over the course of the edition, armies started becoming more and more customizable, and it was kind of a golden age for kitbashers and people into a more narrative playstyle.
The Dark Eldar were the very first 3e Codex and didn't get a codex update during 3rd and 4th edition, which left them kind of a relic. Orks at least got the Armageddon update. In general, 3e codexes have a lot fewer option for customizing your stuff than 4e, but in turn 4e severely neutered close combat options and carved off a lot of wargear that had been more universal in 3e.
The Chapter Approved modifications, AKA 3.5e, are very nearly what they would become in 4e. The Sisters army from the CA books is hilariously overpowered compared to the BBB/White Dwarf or Witch Hunters lists, while the Necrons are a stopgap that's barely more than their old 2e selves. They'd get a massive overhaul later. The Vehicle Design Rules are universally beloved by kitbashers, and also broken as shit.
4e expands on the original Combat Patrol ruleset and fixes a lot of the mechanical issues in 3e, and the codexes from late 3e/early 4e are some of the best of any era if you're into /yourdudes/. Late 4e started the Great Culling of any unit and wargear that didn't already have a model, pivoting hard towards tourneyfagging. 5e is where everyone agrees that /grog/ stops - flyers, Apocalypse, and straightjacket codexes put a bullet in the head of the old game.

I've always disliked Repentia and would much rather have had official Frateris Militia or full blown Redemptionists in the army list.
Having Sisters who have failed in something be sent or choose to go on a crusade like has happened with various Space Marines would be fine, with only the very best or most blessed surviving. That would mean a table top unit of super veterans with their own high level Sacred Rites/Acts of Faith but with very limited wargear choices.
Instead we got Sisters who devolve so badly that they strip naked, staple scripture to their tits and tongues and fanatically charge the enemy. Oh and if they aren't charging fast enough a non-redemption seeking "Mistress" uses neural whips on them to make them go faster.
Great for Rule34, not so much for the fluff of the army.

>Pics of your Sisters of Battle please?
They...aren't painted. I've assembled 30 out of 40 though.
My brother and I are making up plans to play Warhammer 40K 4th edition Invasion, which is a game mode that came to life through Battlefleet Gothic. It's shipboard combat through the various rooms and corridors of a Battle Cruiser and uses expanded squad coherency and in some cases increased lethality to represent close quarters battles. The attacker takes one elite and one troop as their compulsory ForceOrg while the defender gets the usual two troop. From there out, both forces use the rest of the ForceOrg chart to build out their attackers and defenders.
For my Sisters, I want to flood the corridors with Repentia and have my SoBs take up position behind them with storm bolters and flamers. Each room uses the "close confines" rules so you use Cityfight Rules, no weapon of strength 7 or higher can be fire in rooms near the hull, the density of terrain in a battlecruiser gives everyone a 6++ etc
It's gonna be a blast.

I did a little more work on some of my projects so far this week, I recomposed a terrain piece I started last year for an outlaw frontier colony set(I shared some pics of the market and scatter I made earlier) and got my terminators caught up for mt Retro40k Blood Angels. The Blood Angels infantry should have their armour all done today and then I can get on with their details, squad markings, insignia, honour markings, all that fun stuff.
Here's some pics, first ia the reconposed building, this will be a nice mid-sized LoS blocker. It's Tino's Bar and Brothel, on the edge of the docker district. Built from recovered bulk freighter cargo containers, and cheap prefabs the colonial council was gonna scrap. I plan to have some warehouse and industrial pieces to go along with this as well as some other cheap looking vice businesses(bars, gambling dens, and dodgey food vendors) to mix together to sell the look od the district. This whole project is growing way out of the scope I jad planned before, but it's pretty fun to do so I'm not too worried atm, I've got the storage space to handle it for now.

>What makes Sisters so overpowered in CA books specifically? That's the army I'm looking at, I just want to avoid the worst WAAC stuff
The new style of Acts of Faith and the bonuses it game (Witch Hunters toned them down a LOT), plus the ability to make a command squad in a 10-man transport with a Priest, a Canoness, and SIX squaddie models with full armory/wargear access. The second game we tried out a unit of Chosen of Khorne were sprinting around the battlefield screaming like little girls while the Sisters chased them to the dulcet strains of the Imperial hymn "Yakkity Sax", after violently raping multiple squads of Berzerkers in the first three turns. If you had a Repressor (I converted one) that goes up to 12 models. There's a reason there are so many restrictions on wargear in the WH dex and the CA one is very much why.
CA is also when we finally got the Exorcist and the Multimelta Immolator, which were extremely useful now that you could move and fire the main guns on a tank. So you could Tank Shock the corner of a unit, park the tank in a way that forced them to bunch up, pop the hatch and drop a heavy flamer and regular flamer shot from the passengers, plus whatever was in the turret. It made for some.. interesting games, let's put it that way. Partly balanced in that the only usable long-range anti-tank in the entire army was Superkrak missiles and the Exorcists, which were of course Public Enemy #1.

There are actually grog-era rules for Frateris. Before the White Dwarf article came out, a lot of us Sisters players used the Hive Gang Militia from the Armageddon codex. The Chapter Approved (2002) version has FM as "Redemptionists" that effectively use the same rules with a tweak for underbarrel flamers. For the Witch Hunters 'dex there was a White Dwarf article with Frateris as well as the option for Inquisitorial Guard and Stormtroopers.

Next up is the start of some low income housing, poor as shit single occpant pod houses that are naturally packed to the brim with families, yoghurt pots and some other bits and pieces to add some visual interest.

starting a readthrough of the Rogue Trader era of White Dwarf(which at least according to Lexicanum should be issues 93 to 165, though I wouldn't be too surprised if an article or two relevant to RT showed up past 165), and it was interesting to see in issue 94 that apparently Rogue Trader as a concept actually preceded Warhammer Fantasy, they just went with the latter first because well obviously it made more sense to start off with a fantasy focused game since that was right in the midst of the D&D boom of the early 80's, though obviously by the time Rogue Trader became an actual game in 1987 it had evolved into the beginnings of Warhammer 40k as we know it
also looking through my copy of Rogue Trader, the original take on the Tyranids are definitely quite different from what they'd become by 2nd Edition, Rogue Trader treats them more like a conventional(if incredibly weird) race, some of that more individualistic nature would of course get funneled off to the Genestealers once the connections between the Tyranids and Genestealers got solidified(even if Genestealer Cults as a concept took a backburner for a long time) but still interesting to see where they started(especially when compared to the Imperium, Orks, and Eldar who were all fairly recognizable compared to their modern incarnations from the get-go)

'Rogue Trader' is a weird one. Originally it was publicized as going to be a set of space-ship and boarding rules... but they eventually gave up on releasing that game. The fans never got that message, and kept pestering them for a solid release date... so they just slapped the title on their sci-fi ruleset to shut people up (iirc).
The RT Genestealer Cult lists are in the RT Compilation, and the Chaos Genestealer Cults in an issue of WD... I think. Though, like many more obscure RT Lists, I don't Know how much use they ever got.

which makes it a bit ironic that one of the most iconic things about 40k ended up being Space Hulk which is tied pretty closely to what that original concept would have been
>The RT Genestealer Cult lists are in the RT Compilation, and the Chaos Genestealer Cults in an issue of WD... I think. Though, like many more obscure RT Lists, I don't Know how much use they ever got.
there's also an entry for Ork-Hybrid Genestealers in the Freebooterz book, which is definitely one of those concepts that doesn't quite line up with modern lore(can't recall when they started doing the "Orks grow from spores like mushrooms" thing) even though I don't think it ever got officially decanonized(kind of like how Chaos Orks are mostly nonexistent in the modern lore but still technically exist)
kinda makes one wonder how Rogue Trader era versions of later factions like the Dark Eldar, Necrons, and Tau would be like(most of the other additions from later editions are basically just expansions upon concepts already present in the RT era rather than being new concepts like those three*)
*well okay sure evil Eldar was nothing new as a basic concept and the Necron were visually derived from one of the more popular Chaos Android designs, but both ended up antagonist factions that helped fill out that niche outside of the big three of Chaos, Orks, and Tyranids, much like Tau did for the "Order" side beyond the Imperium, and Craftworld Eldar(especially after the Squats got well Squatted)
>>96470486
Freebooterz was a bit of an odd one. Some of the units in that book require another 5+ rulebooks to use. Great fun though (even if some of the units had too low an Int stat to use the weapons they started with)!
There are rules in the RT Rulebook for stat-fiddling infantry, and making your own vehicles, so it's certainly possible to make rules for later factions, though they may lack the special faction rules that later editions loved to hand out. You'd have to decide if you wanted your Necrons to act like robots/vehicles or conventional units though.

>>96470486
>Dark Eldar
Hinted at briefly in RT and sort of implied to be the RT-era Corsair Eldar operating out of their own Tortuga when they show up in 3e
>Tau
There's room for them but I'd probably tie them into the Enslaver fluff instead of the Eldar/Necron War in Heaven.

true at minimum would just need to create baseline stat lines for Tau and Necrons(Dark Eldar one could probably get away with just using the existing RT Eldar statlines, much like if you were to do Votann you'd probably just use Squat stats)
>though they may lack the special faction rules that later editions loved to hand out
also true though I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to backport some of those as needed
>You'd have to decide if you wanted your Necrons to act like robots/vehicles or conventional units though.
yet another thing to sort out, though I could see them being a mix of both(much like how core RT Tyranids make use of the regular equipment and vehicle rules just fluffed to fit their biotech niche)

This varies, depending on whether you use the Vehicle Manual rules or not (and the only Nid 'Vehicle' they ever released a datafax for was the Screamer Killer Carnifex). The Tryanids list (In White Dwarf 145) actually had a monster stat-line for them instead, so you can happily live without the vehicle layout plans and Perspex targeting matrix, if you want to.
The only lists really stuck with the Vehicle Manual rules are the later Ork ones, the Space Wolves list and... the Knornate Ravagers (because of the Wheelchair of doom). And, even then, I don't think robots ever got a targeting card (weird, considering that a Nid unit did).

It wouldn't be hard to make statlines for anything with RT's core book.
One of these days I'd like to tackle a RT Battle Bible, so all the scattered rules are in one spot. Though you end up with oddities like the original vehicle rules being superseded with stuff released in WD. Honestly you almost have two different games with RT, corebook only RT which is fairly self contained and RT+ where all the WD material gets added in.

Imagine how pleased I was to find 40k second and third in PDF...I will probably hunt around for WHFB 4th and 5th because they coincided with my hobby way back when.
For those of us who don't want to oay premium on old models, are there any STL designers out there who do a good, old school adjacent range? Doesn't have to be specialised, just basic foot is a good starting point

In rogue trader main rulebook slann were present, that's where most of their lore is. I run a lizard people army a lot and OG slann had similar stats to orks so I sometimes run em as orks.
For models, you can get a few options from third party as well as OG space slann recasts.
I myself use lancer miniatures space lizards, they are nice old school metal minis and while not best scults, are quite fun.

Then took another 34 years to complete the collection, though I was helped by the books being fairly cheap in the 90's and 00's due to GW's "all previous editions are inferior" sales tactics.
In hindsight I'd have been better off spending my money on loose women and drugs, but it's a bit late to decide that now.

Love it, these are the best books GW ever made, you've got a lifetime worth of excellent games wrapped up in there. If you're serious about playing R.O.C. regularly like I am, my best advice it to use the Narrative Scenario Generator starting on page 61 going through page 72 in Lost and the Damned to generate objectives for your games. It's often fun to just line the guys up and let their different mutations do the talking as you smash it out in a classic style of warhammer fantasy battle, but the game really shines when you have one warband disguised as nuns to rescue their champion as he's marched to the gallows, while the enemy warband disguises themselves as the dungeon guards so they can loot the treasury on their way to try and kill the captured champion themselves to bring glory to their vile god. The game spirals further into chaos when you have a group of bounty hunters show up on the trail of the second champion and release all the prisoners from the sells to conceal their ambush.
As a bonus, these secondary objectives also provide an opportunity to earn more rewards and mutations more quickly which is really the most satisfying part of the game, building horrible & absurd mutants with which to menace the darkened corners of the old world.
Here's an old-school style photo of the khornate warband I'm currently running taken with my black plastic brick of a phone with clicking buttons, captured during my last game of 3rd edition WHFB. The warband is comprised of original Realm of Chaos era figures I've collected, some non-citadel figures of the same vintage, and a few that I've sculpted and cast myself.

What is the base size and rough height of a 2e/3e Ork dread? I have a hankering to make a retro army and want to scratchbuild a dread out of junk.

55-60mm tall with the feet the same from outside toe to outside toe.
This is a 2nd edition one on a 5mm grid.
For base size there was a lot of variation. They didn't come with a base during 2nd and maybe early 3rd so if you did see them based they were often put on 50mm square or at an angle on 40mm square bases cause those were easy to get, then you had a few people making their own base that was just big enough to fit the model on. Even after the 60mm round base became a thing you had a lot of people who didn't bother rebasing their old ones.

~53mm to top of can, ~95mm to top of banner pole on the 2nd edition metal one. 60mm round base.
I don't have the third edition one, but it's 10-20mm taller and completely fills out a 60mm base to the point of toes hanging off.

I don't know which thread to ask, this one seemed fitting so:
Do recasters of old stuff exist? I assume yes, but I only recently got into the hobby and the recasters I've found so far are mostly doing current GW stuff. And I wanna get 3rd ed guards, only found stls of Tallarn so far. So I don't know if I should keep looking at all.

Yes. To the point that scanners buy recasts of hard to find old models. It's all out there. Good luck on your journey.

Awesome. To be fair it would have been weird to not have someone "claiming" this market
