To fix the shitty rule set.
To make Saturnine termiantors not hot dog shit on the table.
To give us back shit we are still missing
To give options back to things that we got back in the PDF but not fully
To update armies that lost abilities and features for no reason.
For Detatchments for some armies to get options that they realistically should have had from day 1. (IE DA dreadwing should be able to take destoryers, and IW should be able to take legion basilisks and medusads not JUST bombards)

The only sources of elties slots that aren't apex slots or logi benefit (or the champion detachment that gives you one single slot). They're the best legion for SeekerSPAM, and the AL trait is super strong regardless of the unit it's in. Sure individual TS Seeker squads are probably deadlier, but AL can take more and have a good allrounder trait to boot

there's literally nothing the paid DLC journals can do to fix HH3rd's broken rules. They can't fix terrain, or fix reactions, or unfuck the broken WS system which cripples dreadnoughts, or fix the broken precision system which makes S4 bolters insta-kill primarchs on turn 1, or remove the broken 4 turn system or the stupid line/vanguard horse-shit.

I would have given them their Toxiferran heavy flamer back. I would have made their bolt pistols be D2, and their hand flamers cause Panic 0. I would have given them a Phosphex bomb, or swap both pistols for plasma pistols, both as a special 1 per 5 weapon.

Destroyers are the cleanup crew that goes in after the planet has been warcrimes'ed from orbit. They arent retarded enough to give troops man-portable WMDs. They have dual pistols so they can prowl around mass-executing the groveling slop that survived the rad bombardment.

The true lore is to accept that destroyers have been a dogshit joke unit from the start that only emerged from a FW sculptor putting two bolt pistols on the the hardened assault mk4 kit he just made and them putting it on the store for a laugh only for it to somehow become a beloved unit for some godawful reason. Trying to improve them or give them any wargear that makes sense goes against their very reason for existence. It's like trying to fix a 40k tank's suspension, or or give boxnaughts knees.

I am glad they did get better. Especially rad grenades; now they feel like actual war crime weapons.
It's their bolt pistols what still doesn't convince me, and I wish it wasn't about replacing them with another weapon like serpentas or rad launchers.
I wish their basic pistols themselves got something going for them. I really think some form of special ammo could give them a unique niche. Especially not one already filled by twin Volkite Serpentas, hence I was proposing Poisoned 3+ & D2. That wouldn't make them any better against MEQ than Volkite, but would improve then against bigger, monstrous stuff like Thallax, Automata and such.

The changes to rad missiles and volley fire make them hilariously good at kill meq chaff, and the toughness penalty finally applying unit wide just generally makes it a super useful utility unit.

Although the image of a squad of destroyers chucking 2 rad grenades every turn out of the presumable dark age of technology era bags of holding they must be carrying around is also pretty funny.

Each model can throw a rad grenade, so up to 10 per round of shooting.
I was mistaken though, they only have the rule that lets them not snapfire in volleyfire, not the other ne that lets them use non assault weapons. Rad missiles however ARE assault weapons, so you can fire 4 rockets per turn, per rad launcher.

Use Prime Slots to take more.
Anonymous No.96414507
>>96414449

That gets you Elite slots, which are easy enough. Prime elite slots, which I need to start slapping Malefic on anything that is both long-ranged and won't atomize under Cybertheurgic Feedback, are rather harder to come by. Looks like it's just the Assault Vets from the Master of Descent and that one Apex. I suppose Malefic Termies are also pretty solid, they're just much harder to actually do anything with than vets because the Magi boosting them can't hop in a transport or Deep Strike.

Anonymous No.96414536

The Mechanicum allied det doesn't need the prime slots, so that's not too much of a problem. I can get two if the Magos takes a techpriest det with an extra prime priest in it, although I only really need one decent caster priest per Prime Elite. I'm just playing around with the fact that a Malefic Archimandrite in a Malefic allied squad can buff that unit on a 9 or below, which is funny with plasma vets or any of the various snipey squads even if he does blow himself up a bit with feedback, since you can get BS6 and start critting.

I suppose I can just grab the Elite apex for the Marines and start playing around with Headhunters or similar, no need for two Magi and two squads of snipers even if it would be fun to blow up a primarch in a storm of critical bolter headshots.

the rear pod is also discarded and he'll have a great big drape of machinator cables and the like in the vein of a matrix sentinel coming out of the ass and anchoring him to the base

The Inversion Beamer on the dread is extremely mean, and it's an extremely durable platform so it will probably get to use it. The Grav-Pulveriser is also not bad for the pinning, although it struggles to get lots of use out of its D3-4 because of the relatively low AP, so honestly I'd personally go double IB and the nipple templates of your choice. Panic (2) on the Photonic Incinerators is neat.

The terminators tend to kill themselves with the disintegrator guns, so I wouldn't go for them there, and the rest of their weapons aren't massively inspiring, I'm not sure they have a clear role right now, although the Praetor is at least a huge beefy sidegrade on the traditional terminator praetor and probably does just fine with that absolutely murderous hammer.

that's incorrect. Both disintegrators and plasma suck cock. There's no reason to ever take either (except for thousand sons)

Plasma is insufficient against light targets, it does worse output than the most basic bolter per point. It fails against terminators and AP2 instantly while dmg1 makes it double-useless. It's absolutely fucking pathetic against 3+ armor saves which it should be AP3 against but isn't. The s7 mode is still garbage but self-harms to accomplish nothing, and the s6 mode is a complete joke harmless against even the lightest of light vehicles.

The only thing that cures plasma's trashness is thousand sons rending5+ cheatmode, which makes plasma suddenly the best gun in the game - but 17/18 legions don't have that.

Plasma really proves the writers of HH have never read a single 40k book in their lives or even watched any of their shitty animations. Power armor does not stop plasma blasts. That is it's one and only job - being AP3 or AP2, and they failed to reflect that.

The lightest target you're likely to fight is auxilia lasrifles.

90 points gets you 5 plasma guns. Hitting on a 3+ means 7 hits, wounding on a 2+ means 6 wounds, 6 unsaved wounds.

90 points gets you 9 bolters. 3 attacks each when not moving, hitting on a 3+ means 18 hits, wounding on a 3+ means 12 wounds, 6 unsaved wounds.

Against auxilia safe plasma is comparable to its weight in stationary bolters and better if the bolters have to move

Against marines bolters make 27 attacks, hit 18, wound with 9 and kill 3 marines.

Safe (breaching 6+) plasma makes 10 attacks, hits with 7, wounds with 5 regular and 1 AP2 and kills 2.7 marines.

Against castellax bolters get 27 attacks, 18 hits, 3 wounds and deal 1 unsaved wound.

Uncharged plasma gets 10 attacks, 7 hits, ~3 to 4 wounds and deals 1.5 unsaved wounds.

A safe plasma gun is worth like, 2 stationary bolters Against most things and can also shoot tanks in the ass for real damage.

The advantage of plasma is that it squeezes roughly 2 tactical marines worth of firepower on the body of a single tactical marine which means you can squeeze a full squad in a Rhino and do decent damage.

The obvious downside of plasma TSS is their durability is slightly over half that of an equivalent number of tactical marines.

This means you don't want plasma shooting at equivalent tacticals because they will get slaughtered with return fire. If you want a TSS to kill tacticals use Calivers.

You should only use the overcharged profile in 2 scenarios.

Scenario 1, its turn 3/4 so keeping an extra dude alive isn't super valuable.

Scenario 2, you're shooting Thallax equivalents or terminator equivalents in which case the S7 and breaching 5+ are pretty big.

Quick question about medium area terrain and the Alpha Legion trait.

Since medium area terrain blocks line of sight if you draw a 3 inch line over it and the Alpha legion trait means your 2" further away. Do these effect stack?

In essence, can you as the AL player put your dudes 2" into a piece of medium terrain and see out of it, but since you count as being 2" further away your opponent is drawing line of sight over 4" inches of area terrain and can't see you.

Is this the correct reading or have i missed something?
Cheers

The AL legion trait doesn't affect the medium area terrain rule.
The AL trait adds 2" distance when measuring the distance between models with certain interactions.
Medium area terrain blocking LOS takes effect when the LOS line is drawn through at least 3" of the terrain. Only the crossing distance through terrain is measured, not the distance between models.

Hey, you can give basically the entire army Rite of Pure Thought for free, so this is where the shitty and cheap tech-thralls of old were hiding the entire time. They're bad, but also basically interchangeable with the infantry squads, so there's going to be some situations where they have some fun options.

I'm personally feeling like Rite of Pure Thought + Voidbourne infantry squads would make great early objective cappers, since they have just enough infiltrate to make the push to centre without transports and won't run quite so easily. Throw in some of those 85pt basilisks for annoyance fire, maybe a Rogue Psyker or some attack crocodiles for kicks.

Yeah, all the high BS sniper models are basically working under the assumption that their precision shots are almost always going to be crits. Prime Vigilator does something similar, since he can be BS8 for a very reasonable price, whereas Exodus is rather more expensive but doesn't need the Prime slot.

I am pondering taking 10 headhunters in that apex that gives you Prime Elites, then allying a malefic magos to boost them up to BS6. Some of them may die, but that's a sacrifice I am willing to make to put 40 Crit (6+) Banestrike shots into a Primarch, EW Marine warlord or Archmagos and take 4-5 wounds off. Maybe a Vigilator to finish the job, too.

Damn, I did not notice that, that removes a lot of the juice from the Ogryns if you can't buff them with anything but the ogryn provenance.

>>96417297

They need to be Malefic because techpriests cannot buff arbitary infantry from other factions, but they can buff any Malefic unit if they take the heretek options. If they're in the squad they'll cast it very reliably, if they're not it's a little harder.

The crits are a big damage add, since normally you're wounding on 6s with S4 guns and only breach on 6+ anyway, so a standard 10 headhunter squad does 1-2 wounds to a HQ rather than 4-5 to Primarchs/EW models/Archmagi and a comically large number to anything else. Can't feasibly get two squads of demon snipers and obliterate primarchstars in a hail of critting bolter rounds, but one is probably plenty for anything lesser, and if the deathstar does respond to that by trying to shoot or charge the headhunters while they're still buffed it's entirely possible they kill the primarch or the rest of the terminators they were just blasting with Return Fire/Overwatch.

Got a lore question to ride me over: was the whole widespread superstition present in 40K about Machine Spirits and the like also a thing in HH? I know the Mechanicum existed, but I'm ignorant on the general status of the Imperium at the time. Were there Enginseers in the Imperial Army? Did the Legions have Techmarines of dual loyalties to Mars and Emperor?

Greetings and welcome!

>was the whole widespread superstition present in 40K about Machine Spirits and the like also a thing in HH?
Mostly yes. There were a rare few individuals that were more secular and knowledgeable rather than superstitious about it, but that didn't last long.

>Were there Enginseers in the Imperial Army?
Yes, though more attached to rather than in. Tech priests were already responsible for the maintenance and repair of most of the Imperium's vehicles and wargear.

>Did the Legions have Techmarines of dual loyalties to Mars and Emperor?
Yes, techmarines receiving final training on Mars was established during the early Great Crusade. Some legions were more accepting and trusting of them at this time though, intra-faction relations within the Imperium somewhat soured after the whole HH shitshow.

I mean that's a lot of damage but you've only got 18" of range, can't infiltrate because of the magos, and also can't use transports because of the magos. Headhunters are 1w 3+, I don't really imagine you'd ever be able to make it to the shooting phase in the first place.

You've also used a praetor and a delegatus to get those two vanguard dets, meaning that you're at around 900 pts, almost a third of your army. For that price you could also just bring 4*10 seekers, that'll do more damage, are more durable, are more versatile, and are incredibly easy to get through Headhunter Leviathal.

It is a very interesting combo though, one squad might be cool to use.
Anonymous No.96417591
>>96417507

Two squads is not feasible, I agree. One squad, tucked behind cover in the back to respond to big squads of termies/primarchs/whatever trying to push the backline or pop out and hose down an objective if there are none, might be pretty decent. The Magos is reasonably bulky and can take light to medium fire on his 4W 2+ 5+++ body to defend the squad while battlesmithing things from behind a wall.

Magos, 2x Vultarax, 2-3x Krios and maybe a Karacnos is a solid allied det, and AL is relatively independent of Apexes anyway, so 10 Prime Headhunters and maybe some Effrit seems like a reasonable use of that. A Karacnos firing statuses at two or three different squads that are subject to the Effrit disadvantage aura seems potentially mean.

If I'm calculating this right 40 Seekers actually do less precision damage than one squad of Guided headhunters against anything more durable than an artificer armour Praetor, although they're a lot more reliable about it and they'll obviously take out more non-character infantry if needed.

80 Seeker shots is 10 wounds to an artif praetor, 6.66 to termie praetor and 3.33 to saturnine praetor/primarch.
40 Guided banestrike shots do 8.5, 8.1 and 7.7 respectively, or 5.2/4.8/4.4 to if the targets are EW.

If you had to spend infinity points on glass cannon snipers, maybe one squad of the headhunters and 20 seekers? 800-ish points for the lot, just about kills a 6W primarch and a couple of his escort in one average or better round of fire, and is much more versatile than shoehorning multiple apex detachments into a list because they'll also mow down multiple lesser characters or infantry squads.

I was just looking at that exact thing because I realised I wasn't sure how it worked in this edition, and it's not immediately intuitive for snipers targeting a particular model to roll against the toughness of his friends.

I think you are right and precision wounds still target majority toughness, so the Seekers do double or triple the damage I thought they did unless the Primarch is running around with Saturnine Terminators and the Headhunters get bumped up to 4.8/5.2 wounds against a T5 and T4 escort respectively. That's very janky, although good to know for a Mechanicum army - put those Archmagi or Abeyant Magi with bots for better sniper defence.

Yes. We've been over it a million times.
Non penetrating hits that don't damage the structure of the tank can still damage outside equipment like sights, guns and tracks, which results in the equivalent statuses.
This is standard military practice in real life to deal with armor you can't penetrate.
Game play wise it also makes a lot more sense to have statuses apply only 1/6 of hits instead of all the times you penetrate, specially when most anti tank weapons have armourbane.
You just don't like it cuz it's different, even if it makes more sense and it's more fun to play with and against compared to your tank being fucking useless for the rest of the game every time it gets penned and/or being able to glance vehicles to death really easily

He clearly doesn't like it because it's not realistic or fun. A 150mm cannon always has a much higher chance its shell that successfully tore through the actual armor will have shredded the tracks, broken wheels, destroyed the gun breach, tore the aiming system to pieces and eliminated several crew members inside the vehicle (it really slows down reloading when the guy whose job is to reload happens to be dead)

he's nothing special. It's 165 points to attempt a single shot, which half the time does not crit (so dmg1 if having to move, and only dmg2 if stationary). Say the opponent ignores him and he gets an even spread, so 1 crit moving, 1 crit stationary, 1 non-crit moving, 1 non-crit stationary and game ends. Before even rolling to wound that's a total dmg 8, wounding on 3+s average was 5.3, and getting past the dreadnought's 5++ was 3.5 wounds and game ended. Provided the enemy let him go all 4 turns without simply killing him - he killed half a contemptor across 4 turns that costs the same points exodus costs.

That's bad output against dreadnoughts, and his gun is totally ineffective against tanks, so it's hard to find a situation where exodus isn't simply worse than buying a 10man Seeker unit which has far more damage output.

the cop provenance was a surprise, the only new one I think; being able to combine weapons from different provenances is interesting too

Cavalry Troops with lances have either got to kill you first round on the charge or they're dead; they've lost a bit (tighter controls on wargear, melta lances are gone) and gained a bit (lances are D2 instead of Brutal (2), 2W models now, militia pistols are worse than auto/laspistols) but Firestorm is good and Impact (S) makes chainswords into chainaxes for a round (and improves chainaxes almost into marine with chainaxe), and shock mauls/tainted implements are both improved by Impact (S) as well, I can see that Apex Detachment getting some use even if it's just someone's old Bretonnians; Abhuman Muster with Cavalry Troops is probably fun too

Sentinels are much improved and I can see them doing the heavy lifting in a lot of lists, transports are improved, Ogryns are improved (ripper guns as standard, cheaper than before), dune buggies are a nice addition, Go To Ground is good (for units with 20 models it'll preserve a lot of them, and it doesn't prevent Irregulars from scoring), the Industrial Tools good, mining lasers look like a good way to keep Vehicles away from Objectives or choke points

Rapier Troops has a "Legionary" typo that needs correcting but from context the meaning is obvious

haven't had enough time to digest the combinations with Provenances but it's looking solid, Knight armies should be happy too - don't need a Force Commander to get a single Provenance for their special Detachment

yes but they are also supposed to be good in melee to some degree and I don't thin you can't really make deffdreads or kans or mega nobs.
Seems fine if you want to do speedfreeks for some reason they got a lot of vehicles and bikes now

yes they can't be played 1:1 as in 40 but I'd say that they shouldn't be anyway.
30k orks should not be le funny hooligan orks of 40k. They should be more serious, and the rules open new types of converted units for them
