No Wargames Atlantic did not make sci-fi Roman heavy weapons or at least not yet.

And even if they did, they will do it their own way like they did with the Les Grognards heavy weapon team where they can technically be used in 40k, but you'll have to have a paper with printed pictures of the heavy weapons team and what heavy weapon it represents.

Wrong. V in classical latin is very soft but it is still a V. Try saying "Veni" without having your lips touch and starting with your mouth open on the V. That is the correct phoneme.
Anonymous No.96438303

Depends on time period of course, but prior to roughly 100-200AD the V was pronounced as we would pronounce a W or U.
>Try saying "Veni" without having your lips touch and starting with your mouth open on the V
Well, your lips don't touch during any part of either pronounciation so this is particularly retarded, thanks for that.

Pompey entering the holy place of the Jewish temple
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Jerusalem_(63_BC)
>Pompey himself entered the Temple's Holy of Holies, which only the High Priest was allowed to enter, and thus desecrated it. He did not remove anything, neither its treasures nor any funds, and the next day, he ordered the Temple cleansed and its rituals resumed.

The legend of the Holy of Holies was that, when the High Priest entered for the yearly blood sacrifice, if he were not properly cleansed, he would drop dead in an instant. They used to tie a rope around their waist before entering, so their lesser priests could pull their corpse out if needed. It's also important to remember the difference between Roman temples and Jewish ones. In a Roman temple, the thing was normally dominated by a gigantic statute of the god being worshipped, but the Holy of Holies was... empty. There was nothing there. Pompey entered a most sacred place and was left with the unnerving idea that the Jewish God was too large to be contained within the building.

See those three mounted guns?
The one with the coils is the lasgun, the double barrel is an autocannon, and the last one is a heavy bolter proxy.
Those three have appeared in the cannon fodder heavy weapons STL pack too.
I think they're WGA's go-to heavy weapons and they somewhat looks passable as 40k heavy weapons.

But for now we have to wait and see if WGA will even release the heavy weapons for their Roman guys at all. What they release in what order is pretty schizophrenic of them.

That actually would be a very fitting matchup against the Space Romans. Plays into the theme of Rome being civilization and the barbarians being the uncivilized violent masses if that's your thing.

Barbarian did not mean primitive savage. It meant foreign-speaker.
Even if we discard Tacitus' account as being a bit fanciful and biased in favor of the Germans, barbarians surpassed the Greeks and/or Romans according to their own accounts in several technological areas.

I should have worded my post better. I'm sure you're right.
I guess if I had to rewrite my post I would say something along the lines of The Damned being Germans versus the Death Fields Romans plays into how the Romans felt about themselves versus the rest of the world with them being the beacon of civilization and the rest being savage outsiders.
If they even thought of themselves that way with little exceptions.

But thank you anyways, anon.

I appreciate it. I'm just pedantically rescuing the reputation of ancient peoples ruined by hollywood. It's like the mudcore medievalisms of everyone wearing brown sackcloth and being muddy. It drives me nuts.
The whole "beacon of civlization" vs "subhuman savages" is largely a jewish, and therefore later, christian, mytheme. See "tikkun olam" for example. Pre-christianization, Rome is unlikely to have held such views, given how eagerly they adopted and syncretised from everyone they came into contact with.
The classic example being that there is essentially nothing Roman about an archetypical Roman legionary (pic not rel): his armour is Celtic, his helmet is Gallic, his sword is Iberian, his shield is Italic, etc.

I totally get it. I guess Hollywood has tainted my view on the Romans and instead I ought to pick up a book. Any recommendations?
I partly want to read because I’m in a Romaboo phase and I want to take inspiration for my setting.
Anonymous No.96498393
>>96497344
I'm only a hobbyist level Romaboo, but I tend to avoid secondary sources like the plague. Everyone has an agenda (even the primary sources typically do, but at least that's only one agenda you have to account for, not two or three). I mostly study Greco-Roman theology and mythology as part of my comparative studies (I'm really more of a holistic Euroboo) and for RPG inspiration, so that's your Homer, Hesiod, Ovid and Apollodorus and their sort. Herodotus is a really good source of inspiration to populate a sword and sandal RPG setting, since he describes all sorts of less well known ethnic groups. For specifics on Roman history, I think Livy is considered the go-to guy, but I could be wrong. For opinions on western European barbarians, Caesar, Tacitus and the anything on the Cimbrian War comes to mind.

If you're a visual sort of guy, then the Osprey books are the ones with the consistently most appealing illustrations I've found. Nothing beats a trip to the museum and glyptotheque though.

Hope this helps, and don't hesitate to ask any questions. Maybe Romaboos of higher power levels can also add their two sesterces.
