Do you think it would actually kill them, or would they just be booted out of the reality and into some null space? Could it even kill them? Can't forget that Demon Cult also completely nullifies the terrified person's natural aura regen, but yeah it would be hard to proc against an opponent of the same level. You'd have to either have some absolutely busted technique combo that'd make anyone sweat facing against you or pair it with an illusion type move to make it easier.

Honestly I think Shapeshifter is the least interesting. There's some cool stuff sure but it always seemed the most boring option as even though the versatility of its techniques are great they kind of pale in comparison to every other normal technique that isn't even racially restricted. Even the Animal Blood options are pretty lame.

Imo: Undead > Yokai > Human > Shapeshifter

Human's buffs are way more busted in the right circumstances but they aren't as general as the first two. Being able to transfer Aura to others when Recovery is a bitch and a half to deal with even for those with Deep systems is an insane technique to have even if it doesn't directly buff your own strength.

That's the problem really, it's not something you can really get any use out of. You could make it way cooler than just a regen boost and it still wouldn't be any good because it only works on people you can crush anyway. Like are you only ever going to be fighting in the middle of a slave pen or something? It's just too situational to count as good.

Well I'm not really ranking it based on how interesting they are, just how good they are. Shapeshifter is undeniably a better race than Yokai, which has no redeeming traits.

Yeah that's why I think humans are way better than Yokai. They're situational, but way less situational than a Yokai's. Fighting a specific race or with allies you need to give Aura to is way, way more frequent than being in a situation where you have someone at your level who is still scared of you for no reason, or where you're talking to a retard who actually falls for a devil deal, or if you're fighting someone/something you actually want to fucking kiss.

Aura Draining alone puts Yokai above Shapeshifter even if its not exclusive because almost every build can make use of it. Spirit Blood is also the best blood outside of doing something like double Pain recovery with Undead because of being able to take Armed, Seen, Toughened, or Horned, in any combination you want. They make for some of the best Body users because of their potential physical buffs.

Drain Kiss is a total skip almost every time but even Devil Deal has its uses as you aren't trying to use it to trick people into a deal, its to confirm that both parties will uphold it. Very niche but going for a build that wants to get others under their thumb you can make good use of it. I fail to see what Shapeshifter can do better in any of the Cores compared to the other races.

I'm not asking you to justify why you went Yokai, or describe to me how you can make a Yokai build or utilize their exclusives as best you can. I do think Demon Cult is a great option though which is why I can't agree it only has one good technique. While it won't work against someone who's at your level or higher as presumably they won't have a reason to be terrified, it doesn't stop it from affecting others around them from being affected. It's most likely due to me valuing Aura Recovery massively over pretty much every single stat as unless you go all in on Devoting, you consume a ton of Aura every move that'll take at minimum minutes to get a single pip of Aura back.

Its funny though cause your opinion on Yokai having one good move is exactly how I feel on Shapeshifter. The only good move I see it has is the Mythic Beast transformation as its a way cheaper version of the 24 point Kaiju transformation Master technique that Body has, in that it gives a tremendously powerful transformation to use at will, though of course the potency would match the aura cost. The other animal techniques that are aligned to Shapeshifter seem extremely low tier in comparison to everything else. What is transforming into a bird or a tiger going to get you an advantage for against any other fighter? While they aren't expensive techniques both in AP and aura cost, it's completely underwhelming even if there's a lot of room for creativity that can be done. As a standalone technique they are great, but when every other option exists I don't see why they would be a good option to use.

I was telling about the different Yokai builds cause I felt that you didn't see any real value to them in a situation. The options only seem bad because it looks difficult to utilize, but the Yokai race itself is strong. I couldn't ever agree its the worst race when the bonuses it offers are among some of the best even if a couple of the options don't matter much.

Yes, but in that case since those guys were shitters and not a combat threat (And thus their regen is irrelevant) that's really just doubling your regen at best. I don't see that as being as good as the shapeshifters or undead's great racial due to that.

I don't really see it as situational though. Yokai are prime candidates for Body, Demon Cult pairs amazingly with Flow for devastating AOE attacks that would make anyone around fear you and give the affinity the aura recovery it desperately needs, and Alchemists are naturally scary because of the bullshit techniques they have which would also proc the technique. Even Phase can make you a boogeyman everyone fears.

Plus, doubling your aura regen is a massive boost. It might not seem like it cause usually people just grabs Prana Vulture, but as long as you proc the conditions its a completely passive recovery boost that can stack on any others. Even alone its still a great option because of nullifying others even if it isn't going to be reliable unless you can back it up with your techniques, but when you have techniques that can, it gives you the fuel to go on longer than others. In comparison to the other Aura Recovery options it's pretty much the third best as its only competitors are Prana Vulture and Sacred Fountain, which are better but use up a Boon slot, or Nature Acquiescence which is slightly cheaper but needs direct sunlight and G2 Flow. Calling Yokai situational in general is unfair as even ignoring the busted free Aura Draining, Spirit Blood has a multitude of strong combinations together if you choose to do so. I don't recall many builds back when SC was popular making something out of Shapeshifter compared to Yokai because the options it had couldn't be used to the extent that Yokai's freebies and racial restrictions gave, even if Draining Kiss was basically never used and Devil's Contract just barely.

If we're talking a self-insert build, I think I'm most likely to end up feuding with Gabriela (daughter of Quetzalcoatl), Crow (child of the Morrigan), and Himiko-Oikami (daughter of Amaterasu).

*Gabriela strikes me as young, and I could see us feuding over politics . . . even though we might technically be on the same side. I would likely seem very, very jaded to her, and I could see us potentially coming to blows over what's possible in a situation (and each blaming the other when it all goes to hell).

I would suggest in each section you have some natural and thematic examples in mind, and be sure that the system allows creating them with a reasonable degree of fidelity. One of the reasons I gave up on working with it was that e.g. it didn't seem like I could actually, under the rules, even make Earth - since ordinary planetary 'overworlds' don't have a border realm and so can't be located in orbit around a star.

What about it in particular sticks with you anon? Me personally I love the sense of adventure and exploration the cyoa invokes (I always go as Gnat, with Bill/Golden Wrath and Sumire/Frail). I just wish that Liminal would expand the world building a bit, it feels a bit limited as it is.
