we become the dominant power in the region
reestablish a standing army
be big and intimidating
dont be mean
be nice
ask for fair trade
offer huge payment for minor strips of land between territories of rivals
pay both full price for contested territory
become unconquerable humanity
lead into a new dawn of kindness and goodness
turn it into a solar colonization game
turn tens of thousands of moons into millions of starbases
have all the suns power at our disposal
mfw dont need a military because garbage thrown out a spaceship window hits harder than any nuke

Yes. My group has gone full on FotM multiplayer solitaire euros and I find them all terribly boring. "Use mechanic x to unlock 3 of resource y which can be used on 7 different scoring tracks and bonus multiplier z." Now let's spend the last 10 minutes doing arithmetic and see who wins the point salad. While I can appreciate chaining together a nasty combo, that shouldn't be the whole fucking game.

- I'm not the biggest Euro fan, though my group loves them. I prefer fighting and having direct interaction. I'd have to say Bus, as it definitely is about efficiency but can be very cutthroat and I love it. (Would I like Hansa Teutonica? It seems intriguing and somewhat similar)
- My favorite Ameritrash would have to be TI4. There are shorter games I enioy, shout-out to Arcs, but TI is just such a grand experience and I never stop thinking about it.
- I wouldn't say it matters, but it definitely is useful to know just to get a sense of what the game will be like. Pax Pamir is probably my favorite game of all and I honestly wouldn't know how to define it in those catergories. So the terms are useful only to an extent.
- Wehrle, of course. As it is always said, to the point I feel like a broken record, he may not have perfect games but at least there interesting to think about. Oath is one of my favorite games for what it sets out to do even though it falls short of making it happen.

Not really, it feels like most "American" designs all trend towards being Eurogames now and it feels rare to see proper traditional Ameritrash outside of amateur designers who don't know any better

>In Board Game Geek’s top 100 you find these little tough nuggets like Dominant Species or Twilight Struggle that have been put there by the diehards who kept board games alive throughout the 80s and 90s and early 00s, and to whom Brass is as rich and addictive as tobacco. And if they’re having fun with it, awesome. That’s fantastic. But now, with more games and types of games and more people and types of people playing games than ever before? When the competition is astronomical? Brass is a shade too awkward. It’s tiring to learn, tiring to teach, tiring to finish, and very intense in between.

I won't defend this design feature universally, but I find it to be fun in something like GWT when people call out their individual points, I write them down and tally up, and people have that bit of opportunity to guess who won. Often it comes down to someone else than everyone thought, which is a cool moment of surprise at the end.

So a new Kiesling-Kramer game came out this year. It's called Immortal. Even though I like the theme of planting flowers in a graveyard, the gameplay is too simple. It's basically Rummy with tiles. Tiles (flowers) come in 4 colors and they go from 1-13 (I think). You're meant to place them in vertical or horizontal lines of sequential numbers of the same color or different colors but the same number. First player to place all his tiles wins. That's it. I guess it's meant to be extremely light.

I was genuinely impressed by Vantage. like another anon said, it's borderline not even a game. there's just enough decision making there to fuel the exploration. honestly the art carried a lot, much of it is very attractive. the writing does a good job staying out of the way. there's a bunch of neat surprises to discover, and a meta skill of better navigating the planet based on what you learn in previous runs.
i'd much rather use the webapp for book entries than the physical books though. overall it's obvious that the whole thing is a labor of love and I respect him for it. there's a palpable sense of exploration and discovery, so I'd say it succeeds at what it set out to do

>>Carnegie
some anons were asking me about this last thread:
I play this with people who love 18xx fairly regularly, and the interaction in the networking part of the map is fairly vicious with them. I wouldn't say it's easy at all to connect all 4 cities if other players are trying to be dicks properly. There's also a race for several aspects - donations, departments, and topping transportation tracks. The economy is tight enough initially that the injections of resources from maxing train tracks can make a big difference, and certain departments can be strategy defining.
I've found that there's a variety of viable strategies, so even if the major gameplay loop is largely homogeneous between games there is a lot of nuance in the particulars of a strategy and where you can eke out efficiency relative to your neighbors. Game-to-game i've seen pretty different distributions of actions taken.
Even the player boards are pretty important to pay attention to, since selecting actions that your opponents aren't prepared to capitalize on is pretty crucial. Forcing another player to pick HR and then going last to see what everyone else is powering up and then piggybacking off of it is a satisfying interplay. Even if some of the interaction is indirect, what other players are doing has a big impact on how the game goes for you.
I also recommend playing with the starting auction from the expansion.

I only played at 4 and 3 players, which was pretty fun. Turns go super fast once everyone knows what to do, and the board changes so fast. You really can knock out a good game in 35min.
To answer your question, the consensus is that there are monsters that are good at all player counts, then there are monsters that work at 3+ player counts. I haven't weeded them all out, but I'm sure there will be stats on the gulag before long. Kind of wish there was a preferred player count written on the monster sheets. Definitely enough content to play at all player counts, imo

the game is heavily inspired by 7th Continent/Citadel and Sleeping Gods, powered by a dice system fairly similar to One Deck Dungeon. i think there's a bit of inspiration from Earthborne Rangers, but it doesn't play anything like it. He also mentions Tainted Grail in the rulebook.
Overall it's a lot lighter and breezier than all those games. the fail states are very forgiving and the win conditions give you options.

sometimes the resources are used in different ways, so to help differentiate at a glance they are tied thematically to different things
don't forget to count resources of opportunity (not cubes you push around, but space to push them, worker placement spaces if any, auctions if any, first-come-first-serve limited building space that you should claim unless you have a very very good plan, and so on) where the theme gets a chance to shine even more.

on the other hand a similar argument can be made for ameritrash games, theme doesn't matter, War of the Ring or Axis & Allies, in both you're just rolling dice. oh, sometimes you do draw cards from a deck, like in Battlestar Galactica, but you could replace that with dice (or replace dice with cards) and have approximately no real change beyond small percentage chances that only eurogamer nerds care about.

Speaking of OOP, I remember playing Serenissima 2ed and really enjoying it. The game is now oop and not easy to get (at least here).
The game is about Mediterranean sea where you have these ships that have spaces for crew or resources. You take over coastal cities that produce resources and gain points but you can also fight others to sink their ships or take their cities. The game has a nice ark where you start very euro with trading resources then it becomes like a cold war where there are some fights on the edges and you position fully powered ships on the edge to deter others to fight you then at the end everyone goes all in trying to get one more city for the final scoring.
Are there any other game with this style? An ameritrash(?) game where the fight is like a finale and not just constant fight but something that builds up throughout the game?
I thought Scythe was gonna be similar from description but it's far from it.

You have to be willing to take a loan and have an IMF intervention in order to get the other players to not take advantage of you. I mean, you play Spirit Island, I'm sure there's plenty of room to store inside your head where your brain should be.
>a-at least the gameplay is good
"No!" The gameplay is dreadful; the game was terrible. As I played, I noticed that every time a minor power was played, the player did it for the symbols instead of an interesting effect.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time a card was played for symbols only. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Reuss' mind is so governed by bland effects and thinly veiled set collection that he has no other style of gameplay. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Spirit Island by the same Kenneth Johnson. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these manchildren are playing Spirit Island at 31 or 32, then when they get older they will go on to play Phase 10." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Spirit Island" you are, in fact, trained to play Phase 10.

As the other anon said, there is no hidden info and I dislike anons pretending it is too complex to be analyzed. The main point is that it's one of the coops that asks how much time are you willing to invest. You can solve every difficulty by just investing enough time in the puzzle. And while that is not a criticism in itself, my problem is that solving it is honestly not fun. We beat england lvl10 in our 5th or so game and it was just exhausting and very long. I also don't consider quarterbacking a player issue but a game one, and the only way I have seen that taken care of effectively is by hiding information like in the crew.

Each faction has between 3 and 5 viable openings that leave them on average with +/- 10% of the same score. The optimal ones usually require a specific board set up and can't be pulled off consistently.
In a heavy engine builder like GP, where your options rely heavily on how well you've been doing up to that point, acting like you should be able to do whatever you want on turn one and still get a good score regardless seems to miss the point of the genre. If you're against using the best opening for your situation from a limited pool of good ones, I don't think engine builders are for you.

Spirit Island is far from a shallow game. Your complaint could be applied as a blanket to any board game, but it doesn't seem to apply to Spirit Island for me. Different Spirits value things radically differently for one thing, and adversaries cause you to value different things as well. And it is not an all or nothing thing where you must go 100% in a direction because of the spirit or adversary you have to modulate and adjust based on the power cards you draft.
Speaking of the power cards arrive in so many possible combinations with many unique effects that even after playing it dozens and dozens of times I still find myself using powers I have not used before or finding new utilities and combos. Because you do not know what cards are coming up next (most notably power but also event and fear) you can't judge 100% the value of any given decision.

The publisher is working on art, graphic design, etc. There was an original plan to make an announcement at Gencon, but due to tariffs and other instabilities in the industry, an announcement has been pushed to a later convention. I've been told that this shouldn't push the actual campaign date as long as the world doesn't explode. Fingers crossed!

It is surprisingly easy to learn & teach :
Basically each turn you place a worker, or play a object or a spell, or take a bell card.
Then the round ends when the last bell card is taken, and the rooms' effects apply.
Most of the special rules come from the text on the cards. (So, spells & objects)

I'm just thinking hypothetically because I think my idea is pretty good, and if I prototype it and play test it and everything, like what then? I was either thinking of making it a video game which could work well, or a board game, which could also work well. I think the board game would be easier because I already spent weeks trying to make the pixel art for it, and it's not even like 1% of the required pixel art I'd end up needing, so I'm thinking a board game might be easier in that regard, since maybe I could just find an artist or maybe a publisher would do that for me. I'm not an artist, so video game or board game, the art is going to be a problem for me. I also spent like a year trying to code the game and I made good progress, but still, there is a long way to go, so I'm thinking maybe a board game would just be easier to make than a video game
It's an idea I've had for several years that I really want to see come to fruition, and honestly, I hate coding, so I think I'd rather try to make it as a board game

You try to sell the design to publishers and if a publisher wants it they put you with one of their developers to finalize the game.
The developer handles all of the details to take your design from a working prototype to a manufacturable product. This includes getting art assets, laying out the printed components, sourcing non-printed components (meeples, etc.), finalizing the rulebook, and whatever else.
If you bring any of that to the publisher ahead of time their developer may throw it out the window. The only thing you as a designer are necessarily providing is the gameplay.

As someone who started in your position about 3 years ago, just make a videogame and reduce the scope so it's actually feasible for you to make it. I'm about 6 months (Generous estimate) off from publishing my first vidya and I've never been able to reach the point with a physical game where I've been confident enough in the design to take it to a publisher.

Basically what happens is you need to actually prototype the game, find playtesters, playtest and get feedback and then repeat that cycle about 100-ish times iterating on the game each time to get the game to a point where publishers wouldn't spot the game as an amateur unpolished design (and even then they'll want to do further dev and changes from it then). Even getting to the point a publisher is then actually interested is sort of like playing a lottery where you have to hope one doesn't just come up with some random stupid reason they don't want to publish it (They do this for even established game designers sometimes so it doesn't necessarily get easier).

Also the entire tabletop industry and boardgaming especially is in a weird bubble at the moment that will probably burst by the time you've finished working on this unless you do it full-time. There are currently waaaay too many fucking games being published, I currently go to a game store once a week that manages to have a completely different set of games every quarter, with most of this stock ending up on clearance sale by the end of it. They can barely manage to keep actual tried and tested games on the shelves because there is so much new slop coming in from the distributor.

Once this finally pops do you really think any publisher is going to be interested in whatever your game is? Is it even in a genre that any publisher would already be interested in? I don't wanna just shit on your idea before even hearing about it but a lot of the games I do see that are in development are already unpublishable/only borderline that they always end up going down some crap self-publishing route that ends up basically scamming people that don't know any better into buying a shit underbaked game that no-one except the designer ever really wanted or needed

Would I just find a video game publisher and they'd do all that for me
Anonymous No.96519565 [Report] >>96519621

No, with videogame the publisher expects you to either have an artist yourself or have done all the art. Same with music, if you look at balatro for example the publisher was not even willing to fund any additional music or art for the game, they just provide advertising and marketing p much. On the positive side a videogame publisher will usually reimburse you for the hours spent making the game, boardgame publishers do not do this as far as I have ever heard/seen, only provide royalties at the end (About 4 percent of money on each sale).

At least with videogames you do not need a publisher to actually publish it for you to have any real success, you can just bung the game on steam and market it yourself. As I said, if you are solo developing then you should be working on ideas that are actually feasible to do solo, not something that would take you three years to do the art for. (If it would require that much art physically too then publishers may bat the idea away because the investment of art is too high compared to possible initial rake on release).

Had an interesting situation where factory building in turn order mattered in Horseless Carriage.
We were playing with 4 and 2 players were having a big fight for planning depts, player A would only want to place 1 more planning dept only if player B wouldn't place any more planning depts, so we got into kind of a stalemate until I pretty much forced player A (better engineering than B) to "lock in" their factory before player B took the decision. Player A ended up placing 2 planning depts just to be sure and it did ended up screwing player B from securing engineering next round lol.

From the SUSD review I thought this would make the other players basically have to reorganize their entire building for the turn but ended up pretty seamless, nowhere near as bad as SUSD implied it to be, was actually pretty tense from watching player A sweat bullets about where to place this extra planning dept just so he wouldn't get screwed.

That can happen if the engineering-focused players snab the final copy of a tech station after the player later in turn order has already placed it and built around it.
But that's a rare situation. And when it happens the sales-focused player has a lot of rearranging to do but I wouldn't go as far as to say everything they've built for the turn.
