Duskmourn could've been so so so SO much better. They hyped it up as a "true horror set" and yet it was just "Pop Culture References: The Set". Biggest disappointment I've had with the game in the last decade and it's not even close.

Lorcana absolutely does, mechanically it is almost 1 to 1. Illusion creatures even die when targeted by effects just like Magic lol
The biggest difference is that it doesn't work on a life system and you can't attack your opponent. Instead you're trying to gain 20 lore which you get from tapping creatures or some spells.
As a result, combat is different. You don't declare blockers, instead your tapped creatures can be attacked by opposing creatures.

But that's pretty much it. The phases are exactly the same, there are creatures and artifacts etc, creatures have summoning sickness but artifacts don't, there are color identities, red (ruby) creatures often have haste, things cost mana (although all mana is generic)
I could go on. I haven't seen confirmation but I'd bet money on the design philosophy being that they want dads who play Magic to easily figure out the rules to play with their kids and encourage them into it

Aftermath at least had a couple cards that were interesting. Ass Creed was just ass, to the point that most people forget it even happened. It's what Spider-Man would've been if they didn't blow it up into a "regular" set. In MTG you hold back attackers to protect your creatures and your own life total
In Lorcana you don't tap your creatures to protect your creatures and so you can attack your opponent's creatures, thereby preserving your "life total"

His original point that Lorcana plays like Magic holds up. The combat mechanics are flavoured differently but the basic calculus is all but identical. And it's pretty clear this was intentional on the part of the designers.

As a set it really wasn't anything special. As someone who has like 8 enchantress decks, I like Rooms, I like all the new enchantment creatures. I have every reason to like the Duskmourn set. I even actually got interested in Marina Vendrell's story (shame her card is mediocre). I am someone who SHOULD like the set.

So basically, whenever I draw certain cards, even with the mana to cast them they just don't "feel" right, you know? For example Trygon Prime. I really like the concept, but dropping it, waiting a whole cycle and THEN just making a single creature unblockable is really underwhelming compared to Herald of secret streams or even Rikku. Yuna at 4 cost feels just a little too slow when she isn't in the deck for combos, but I'm attached to her purely because she's one of the main party from the game itself. The lack of haste can also feel sorta underwhelming or disappointing when I can only go so fast and feel like I'm not able to attack without telegraphing too hard and eating removal, so I probably need more protection. Insight Engine is such a cool card but whenever I draw it, I think to myself that I'm paying 5 to draw 1 card, even if it escalates quickly, it's still very very slow to begin.

You should chop it up and glue it together. You get finer details and better prints. Obviously more effort, but it's worth it. Sand it and paint it before gluing it together for even cooler results. They kinda blew their load with two big "event" sets (war of the spark, all will be one) not that far apart that largely wrapped up the MTG story. Ideally they should have been spread across a full 3 set block each, especially the phyrexian invasion plot.

Midnight Hunt. One of THE premium planes for vampires and angels that added no creatures of note for either. Its mascot creatures - werewolves - were horribly designed with one of the most reviled set mechanics (Daybound) which the fucking geniuses at WOTC didn't even extend to old werewolves so if you want to play werewolf tribal you can have a boardstate where a bunch of your werewolves aren't transformed while the others are. And as the ultimate Fuck You to the playerbase, their special card treatment was just saving money at the printers by printing a bunch of cards in greyscale, making them look ugly or even incomprehensible.

Ignoring the annoyance of tracking, the condition was very hard to trigger when a player wanted night and effortless for opponents to turn back to day. You'd rarely ever get to flip your wolves on your turn, hence why their retard solution was to make the only viable werewolf Commander automatically make it night/transform old Werewolves on your turn. Tovolar was the the devs understanding they already fucked up before they even released the set yet totally giving up trying to fix it. Even MaRo admitted werewolves are a mess and he wanted to fix them but he was shot down because the autists on the design team didn't want to errata cards.

It was always retarded to make werewolves transform based on spells cast when the majority of them are Gruul, a color that can't do shit to stop other players casting spells. How does Aftermath Analyst's activated ability work with Icetill Explorer's landfall ability? Do you mill each time a land comes back individually? Or do the lands all come back simultaneously, meaning you only mill after they're all back? If its the former, it is quite easy to deck yourself if you're playing heaps of lands, which you are if you're running both of those cards.

There's literally one color to look at if you want mono color reanimator. With a few options sprinkled elsewhere (mainly white). If I were you i would explore the idea I like and look at legendary creatures that fit! Maybe use scryfall advanced.

Don't even need to mention mono black ones, but there are a few ones in other mono colours, like Emry for mono blue artifacts, or Feldon of the third path for mono red, Celestine for mono white, Six for mono green.
But I wouldn't stick in mono colour for reanimator. Half the fun is cheating on mana with Reanimator and getting all types of colored and multicoloured creatures out before curve is just cooler

IKTF. I built a Marchesa, Dealer of Death deck that tries to kingmake with temp buff instants and other toys like wishclaw talisman and then break parity. Turns out that trying to politics with autists and retards is impossible, would could have seen that coming.
At this point the deck is together and it doesn't have many things I'd need to cannibalize in it so I'm just leaving it together as a "help a new player" deck for bracket 2 games. I might include more fun cards in it moving forward.

I'm using the term kingmake because it's the closest approximation to the playstyle.
If you want me to spell it out longer than the closest playstyle archetype description I will.
The deck aims to support another player that I think I can overtake later with spells that give them something, usually combat buffs or redirecting spells away from them. In return they help me with favors like rigging prisoner's dilemma, giving back wishclaw, or interacting with threats to me or us.
Making it to the late game the deck then has spell recursion to play some haymakers or reanimate threats. There is an intent to win in the end assuming I've accessed those cards which isn't that unlikely.
