Ogre Maneaters.
Female ones.
Leading warbands of great fat bulldyke she-ogres with pink and green buzzcut hair.
Surging over the world's edge mountains, eating people, ruining everybody's fun, telling Greeskins to stop being sexist "Boyz club", demanding the Grand Theogonist stop being a "Pay-tree-awk-al Big-hut"
This culminates in a narrative campaign event, where it is revealed that the truculent she-ogres are being manipulated by the chaos gods Tzeentch and Nurgle, in order to draw out and provoke the forces of Slaanesh into open conflict, by unleashing such ugly distemperate graceless creatures into their sandbox, that the prince of excess is forced to respond with a full scale demonic invasion into the northern Empire; this draws away Slaanesh's demonic forces from his areas of The Warp, making him vulnerable to territorial loss in the immaterium, which goes largely unnoticed by the races of The Old World, who are just happy that they are no longer being nagged to death, even if there are plenty of other things that might eat them without first boring them with moralizing sermons.

It's funny you go to a historical convention like Partizan going on right now, and all you see is tables like this, but when you go to a Warhammer convention it's just tables and tables of tourney faggots with unpainted armies
I genuinely do not understand what led to such a difference in cultures between these two wargaming subgroups. It's gotta so bad, I have proposed a narrative campaign to both my Kill Team group and TOW group and they were aghast that I would ever suggest something other than boring pickup games

If I had the choice between releasing the rest of the Catahy range all at once, or slow rolling the release of fully plastic chorfs or new vampire coast, I'd pick the latter, no question.

There is no Vamp Coast coming. The coastal rumor is regarding ghost/zombie coastal undead with no vampires. It's an AoS army that's being developed not a Vampire Coast one for TOW. The reliable AoS leaker has stated that TOW is not on the backburner and there is lots to come, but what that means, no one really knows. A roadmap would be nice.

There's a multitude of factors that go into it. Sometimes there's overwhelming tech disadvantages. Other times a more advanced culture will get run roughshod over by a more motivated and aggressive outsider culture, especially if the former culture is divided or its people unmotivated to fight the invaders. History, for better or worse, does not actually operate on "the strongest always wins".

I'll agree both seem odd to have binned. But I also see what they were thinking. Tomb kings instead of VC gives you the undead faction and a more visually interesting army. Beastmen are more generic than skaven but also a more grounded one. Skaven break the mold of fantasy because their setting presence is overwhelming. They aren't a simple threat, they are a global one. Orcs can become global if things snowball, as can kings, as can Bret's, as can Cathay, etc. but skaven start at global threat and job downwards as a balance. Skaven could legit be the last legacy army fixed because of that
>>96735754
>Brets could be a global threat
Mind explaining this one to me? I can understand Cathay because of their dragon gods TK because battles would result in more dead to raise as well as Skaven and Orcs because they multiply so quickly, but I can't think of a reason for Brets.

You joke, but the Red Pox is a huge deal and genuinely does pose a Black Plague level threat. That's the key reason why Mousillon is cordoned off instead of being easily purged and reconquered, they have the Red Pox in their water supply and it's highly contagious.

The basic cosmology behind aos is loosely based on norse myth. 8 realms instead of 9, based on the winds of magic, sigmar goes from a thor-like figure to a more odin-like one (even trades his hammer for a spear), and collects worthy warriors (stormcast/einherjar) to wage war on the great enemy (chaos/surtrs lads). It's much more mythological fantasy compared to whfb's high/dark fantasy. At least it was at it's inception, I think they've tracked back a bit on that.

Cathay being stupid overpowered kind of took my desire to play this game away.
Post games and painted minis.
Played a game of Old World, but this time we tried using 6th ed magic spells.
We only used the spells and not the entire casting system.
Knowing which phase each spell belonged to was fairly easy to figure out.
Just read the spell to see what it does and put it in the appropriate phase.
It was interesting and gave us much more flavour than the bland spells we have now.
Casting value for the spells was really low and easy to cast, so that needs to be looked at.
I think we will try some more games with them and tweak the casting values.

Warmaster is a thing and has a lot of 3d prints and free rules available
I am about to start collecting Empire as Marienburg; would 20 to 30 Spearmen and two 10 to 15-man Halberdier Detachments be a good idea for a Regiment? I was thinking of two of those for the main line, with a unit of 15ish? Greatswords and an embedded Captain BSB between them. Furthermore, two Great Cannons and one or two regiments of Crossbowmen and/or Handgunners to go on hills or other suitable vantage points. I do want to take some Pistolieers because I love their English Civil War vibe, but doesn't Impetuous make them likely to kamikaze themselves before they can do anything, due to their charge range?
Any suggestions or comments? I do want to take magic and mercenaries, but don't know how I can fit them in.

Just finished reading the Beastmen Brayherds Journal and i really love it. This feels like a return to 6th edition where Beastmen were not diet coke warriors of chaos like in 7th onwards but the real quasi innsmouth style folk horror "mans shameful secret they thought was forgotten but remains lurking in the woods, angry at their abandonment" kind of deal. The whole idea that they are pure chaos undivided but because of that they know they will never get all the praise humans get from dedicating themselves to any singular god to further reinforce they are anomalies with no natural place in the world which drives them to madness and destruction in a way i feel they really lost after 6th. Of all the journals i've read so far this one feels like a real return to form.

Pretty easy to see a relief army trying to take out a besieging army. And remember that during a siege you have a bunch of people crowded together in one place so you're going to go through food fast and a disease outbreak can kill tons of your men. Sometimes getting the fight over with was the best course of action.

Not because I didn't believe you, but for my own curiosity I looked it up.
First ever photo I could find of the kislev mounted archers was in White Dwarf #144, December, 1991.
Not advertised but featured in the very back in an Eavy Metal battle diorama.
They weren't available for purchase until White Dwarf #148, April, 1992.
Warhammer Fantasy Battles 4th edition, released with White Dwarf #154, October, 1992.
So for customers they were part of 3rd edition for about 7 months. But for the people working at GW, they were probably around for about a year.
So yes, they are technically from 3rd, but at the very absolute tail-end of that edition.
>Post games
Ok, just had a 3k game to finish off a campaign that I've been running at a local store, was absolutely fantastic, and the campaign was well enjoyed too. Here's set up, it's Empire with Ogre mercanaries vs WoC with Daemons. The winner of the game, and the campaign was whoever occupied the Witchfate Tor at the end of the game.

Here's end of round 1, sorry for the blurry picture. some reasonably cautious movement from both sides, the Chaos knights on the far southern flank had a couple of models plinked off, they then declare a charge on the Archers who F&F'd another one to death. The Mortar scored a direct hit on the Marauders and killed nearly half the unit in 1 go, but otherwise shooting was pretty tame in turn 1. The only units that ended up in combat was the Khorne hounds and the demigryphs on the far northern flank, these guys would end up duking it out for the entire game before the Demigryphs eventually won.

End of round 2. The big swordsmen unit moved into the tower, which they'd hold all game. The southern flank collapses for Empire with the 2 remaining knights taking a decent volleygun shooting and only losing 1 model. The War wagon and the chariot get stuck into eachother however the war wagon doesn't do enough damage with impacts so they remain stuck together for pretty much the entire game. The Ironguts also took a flank charge off the Chaos Ogre and got annihalated, they fled and got run down. Behind the tower a unit of Mournfang charge a Giant and do 4 damage on the charge, taking 2 wounds from stomps in return. The Bloodcrushers fail their impetuous roll and have to charge the Archers who F&F as well. This game is starting to look pretty good for Chaos.

Damn I forgot to get any pictures but basically the Mournfang kill the giant, chew through a unit of Bloodletters and Chosen before ending up in the flank of the big Chaos Warrior brick. The Daemon Price messes around a bit before eventually destroying the Halberdiers and Wizard. In the south the Helblaster detroys a chariot before getting overrun by marauders and the remaining knight, said knight also overruns into the Handgunners and wins combat and runs them down, but only tanks to the horse doing a wound. However Rugluds manage to rally and fight off the remaining Maruaders (who got direct hitted by the Mortar again) and the War Wagon eventually wins its combat with the Chariot before going after the big Chaos Warrior brick too. Meanwhile in the centre the Steamtank catches the Chaos Ogres in the back and destroys them and runs them down, before plowing into the Bloodcrushers, which it also eventually kills, and the remaining Chaos Knight that charged it in the rear, although unfortuantly the Daemon Prince overran into it and fucked it up in like 2 turns with its D3 multiwound weapon.

The Mournfang Chrusher gets KB'd in a challenge with the Chaos Lord but it's too late, the War Wagon plows through much of the unit. Next turn they challenge eachother (I should've said it's an Engineer on a War Wagon but eh) and the fucking guy with the Mancatcher KB's the Chaos Lord. Meanwhile the 2 remaining Orcs in Rugluds unit shoot their Crossbows at the Daemon Prince and manage to chip his final wound off him (The odds were ridiculous, 5's to hit, 6's to wound and then he failed both his 4+ ward and 5+ Regen). A suitably ridiculous end to a campaign of Old World, and whilst I feel a bit bad for my opponent that his characters went out that way it was pretty clear he had lost by this point anyway and he enjoyed the silly ending.

I've noticed personally that historical boomers are almost more into the terrain/diorama building than the actual game or even the minis. Seen this mostly with napoleonics. Kind of how to a lot of people the painting part of the hobby takes precedence over the game itself, but like a level of abstraction even beyond that. More power to them though.

As someone who moved from GWs games into historical, that's not entirely it. Most of the people who play historical games have a higher degree of commitment in the sense that you can't play with unpainted miniatures (sure you can, you'll be just frowned upon) and take research more seriosly. Hell, I've seen people arguing because one of them painted his soviet trench coats in a slightly off (historically speaking) tone of white. Also, historical gamers tend to be older, so more experienced and passionate about the game. Again, this is how I see it as someone who has experienced both sides. Much prefer the latter tho, they're much friendlier people than 40k or sigmar people

People use coconut fibre for model trees and bushes all the time as well and I never heard of anyone having problems of that sort.

In a game about pushing blocks of infantry regiments around a table with a ton of scatter terrain is not really practical, but also not something suggested by the rulebook.
Battles would take place in an emptry field, so why is that even something people argue about? It's not a skirmish game. It's a wargame with armies on battlefields.

I'd say that's a decent base. My only worry is that those 10 man units of halbards will explode to pretty much any ranged threat, but you just need to deploy them carefully. The greatswords are in an odd space for the same reason, as they can't really stand up to mass shooting as a 15 man unit, and will get hammered by magic missiles. I'd argue to either bulk them out to 20 or use their points to get another hammer unit that's on the cheaper side like flagellants. Pistoliers are not phenomenal for the reason you just described, but all orcs suffer from that and stuff like wolf riders are still taken, so it's really down to personal discretion as to deployment and how badly it'd mess up your game plan if they got mauled.

VC probably won't come back, at least as it was, GW is too autistic about mixing between systems. I think TOW will eventually get Vcoast as its distinct version. Had a cool idea of them focusing on Necrarchs as the TOW bespoke vampire faction, more focus on their flesh golems and other creations over traditional undead.
Kislev is being murmured about as being soon, so that'll be cool to see, unless they make it retarded or boring like they did Cathay. Hopefully they keep it more grounded and don't flanderize it with bears and glowing ice crystals

is a mix of two things I'd say. They were around when the modern tabletop gaming culture started. They imported DnD to Europe. Even OG 1st ed DnD boomers know Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Before videogames were a thing that was the only way to play those games at all. They had White Dwarf as a generalized gaming magazine before it became a sales catalog for GW products.
And in an unlikely stroke of genius they had in-house artists from the very start that built an IP stronger than anything else, because it lives rent-free in people's heads. People still point to 30 year old illustrations for inspiration.
Current GW is coasting on the dumb luck of early GW.

Herein lies the problem and why the hobby scene, including Warhammer players, fucking hate nu-GW. Similar to Apple post-Jobs, they're resting on their laurels and rarely attempting to innovate or try anything new, and when they do, it's something fucking worthless and gay that only detracts from the "classic" stuff keeping them afloat.
Did anyone else see a dip in activity among their player group(s) after the Cathay + matched play guide release? Personally Cathay isn't an issue for me since I don't play against them, but half the people in my group were also into competitive play and lost some enthusiasm for the game and because of that have slowly dropped activity within my group.

1) On the creative talents of the GW from 15-30 years ago which created and continues to create huge lifelong dedicated fans with crazy spending tolerances.
2) On the fact that all of the competition are genuinely dumb as bricks morons, which has given them a near-total monopoly over an industry (sci-fi/fantasy wargaming) small enough that they're never going to get hit by antitrust lawsuits, yet big enough that they're able to make money hand over fist.

From my understanding it wasn't merely Cathay but a domino effect of lots of tweaks and changes that GW implement that ended up feeling more like a step forward and a step back. Like one Dwarf player was grumbling (when are they not?) about how parry doesn't affect his Ironbreakers, which was a unit that struggled even before, but now with parry it brings other units that should be weaker up to parity with their own survivability, except they perform better at other tasks as well.
Personally I think how good or bad the update was really depends on who you ask and what they play, but I was curious if this was a me problem or if other people have seen any dips because I've heard claims of player activity hitting a ceiling in some parts of the world, but that could also have nothing to do with what's going on in my own group.

So here is the problem with that. We also limited it to Highlander rules once but that made the entire army shit.
1 Canon and 1 Balloon is basicaly useless because you lack the output to just shoot the enemy army to bits before it arrives, which you have to do since all your melee options are pretty shit.
If you limit them to 2 canons and 2 balloons you already reach the critical mass of them shooting/bombing everything to pieces without a lot of counter play.
Cathay also defines which armies are "Meta" ´like Nuln Outrider spam being very strong right now.

I have a few players in the area. The are all polite and only bought 1-2 balloons each (if that, I haven't seen one run them yet.) They all painted them slowly and rather well given the amount of detail. I'd never ask them to limit their balloons personally (unless I was running a tournament, which I'm not,) but I rarely see more than one if that, and they probably wouldn't even run that if anyone asked.
Kinda feel bad, I imagine there's a few people in Germanon's area like that too.

You want Ravening Hordes for evil and Forces of Fantasy for good and the arcane journal is a booklet to add variety and new post WHFB stuff.

Well, battles usually did NOT take place in empty fields. Ditches, hills, streams, woodlines, etc. are absolutely what determined the outcome of battles. Regardless, I understand that an emptier table is more practical from a gaming perspective, but the main problem here is the amount of effort or lack their of, in making the "empty field" look like a good table to play on. I just set up this empty battlefield in 2 minutes and it looks 100x better and more enjoyable that something like this

>possibility two: the target customer is both more receptive to brand new releases while they're still hot off the hype train, and also likely to have a threshold of purchases he will likely do in one go; by splitting the all the kits in two halves you're more likely to get the target customer to buy both waves fully
possibility three: journals are retardedly cheap to write, produce and sell, compared to the price gw puts on them, splitting waves maximises the number of journals they can make and effectively tax playing consumers with.

Designing the kits so they represent only one dragon chinkarch at a time is one of the most retarded decisions they've taken.
They will never make enough giant plastic kits for all of them, even if they stick to the relevant ones, and every additional one of them is a waste of a plastic kit that could have been spent for an actual unit for the army, instead of being a redundant kit for the same concept that's also unlikely to be bought together with the other one.
They should have made one dragon kit that's modular enough to have at least the head with multiple build options for horns and crests.
and then released the human forms of the dragons as resin models or at least smaller plastic blisters.

I'm not disputing that they might release the roster in two waves, although splitting that many units across two books for one faction is obviously inconvenient for the customer, just that the most recent supplement wasn't neccessary if they already planned one with the other half of the faction.
The other issue is that Cathay does effectively break the game already without an expanded roster, I think adding to it is already going to push this edition over the edge into unsalvageable and needing a new edition. In which case it would be better to limp on a new edition then release the full roster in the FoF supplement.
Be interesting to see what happens, afaik the SGS has some bizarre timetabling and 11th ed next year will literally halt production to life support for the first and second quarter of 2026 so they have no time to do anything like an edition or big release.

You can still do a lot in terms of poses even if you tweak the head and tip of the tail alone, especially with the weightlessness and serpentine design of oriental dragons.
And even if there was a problem with marketing a "posterboy" product that requires resin, then they could have made the plastic kit representing miao, but still made said kit with enough future proofing for modularity to make the others via resin upgrades.

Vampire Counts

Give that Wight Lord a shield and you're good to go white boy, a nice 499.
Only thing I might suggest is splitting your zombies into two 15 blocks to get some more maneuverability out of them, but thats personal taste.

Yeah... like instead of building an hill to go on top of your mat, build a foam/wood shape to go under it (or just use something sloped). I mean... it's such a stupidly simple technique; I'm amazed that this is the first time seeing it.
I can imagine being it annoying to play with, but not anymore annoying than it would be playing using regular hills.
>>96745324
Fully painted armies and no grey models on the field seems to also be very common on the historical side.
>>96747101
Ohhh yeah very true. I didn't consider that but you're right. I haven't opened the kit yet but it said online that the AoS irongut kit also comes with square bases. Hopefully that's correct and I won't have to order them from online.

It might if its any earlier repackaging for AoS. Either you can get secondhand bases for dirt cheap online.
Honestly a O&G+ogre soup would be extremely based and thematic, especially with your black orcs. You can fit 3 ogres as mercs in a 500 Battle March list too.

In the order of armies I collected originally back in 6-8th:
Ogres - cause I had almost no entertainment money and could field a list of 17 models
Tomb kings - cause I wanted to have more strategic options and liked the aesthetic
Beastmen - cause i fucking LOVED how they played, and their lore interested me so much. They sucked so bad at the time though. I think won only 1 match in 10.
Now in TOW I'm all in on Beastmen. I also greatly appreciate they are plot relevant finally. Give back raider you fucks, even if its for a different army of infamy

it's not really a game where you'll ever regret collecting an army unless you are competitive minded or didn't understand what an army was before you started collecting it. Picking one means you can leave your other preference for future hobby fun so it doesn't have to be a painful choice either.

You should base your decision entirely on which army you like looking at best, because they're going to spending a lot of time on the shelf.
