Warrior order inspiration
I have an idea for an order of samurai / secret police for my setting.
They are recruited for a week or so per year. Members have a vow of anonymity - they are expelled if they reveal that they are in the order - and have a vow of poverty - they do not get paid. Furthermore, the order is infamous for enforcing laws in an extremely inconsistent manner, striking down civilians without rhyme or reason, while also conveniently being absent when raiders attack.
Is there a real-life organization I could use as inspiration to further flesh out this fictional order?
