Man i fell off tabletop games with 6th edition when WoW got its vile hooks into me but i got back in with 2nd edition AoS.

After playing TOW for a few months i think its ruined AoS for me. Like i still like the setting and models for the most part but man its really shone a light on how fucking barebones and bland heros are in AoS. No equipment choices, just a static block that unless its a big centerpiece does one thing you need or is just a generic beatstick. Its like the game treats them more like card game deck staples. TOW has its own flaws but making heros feel like heros is something the Anvil should have brought back to AoS and its baffling it didn't.

What is the actual difference in character between Ogres and Orcs? They seem almost identical from obsession with fighting and having goblins as underlings.

Orcs specifically are antagonistic. They see outsiders as kill on sight and will invade and kill everyone they encounter on principle.

Ogres are Mongolion Hordes. They will invade and attack settlements when they have a need but will just as often break bread with outsiders. Granted they will eat you if you offend them but they are an actual race and culture as valid as dwarves or elves whereas orcs are barely more than feral beasts that seek to tear down everything.

I guess the easiest way to simplify it is orcs see everyone as their enemy, ogres see nobody as their enemy. Both will attack you and steal your shit but theres a hatred behind it with orcs but merely hunger with the ogres. Ogres are just a lot closer to Giants in sentiment and behaviour whereas Orcs are just what if you crossed a goblin and a gor.

Ogres really came out the gate strong. Their 6th edition army book has a lot of great fluff and the same month there was an excellent white dwarf that was all about a empire scholar travelling the silk road with them.

Hell even today in TOW they get interesting lore. Did you know the Great Maw is actually the remains of the Celestial Dragon calling down a chunk of Morrsleib to try and smite them but their natural resistance to warpstone made the area a inhospitable waste to all but ogres who just started worshipping the hole?

TOW barely even has a narrative involving chaos at this point and if Frydaal is all GW can come up with they shouldn't even try to incorporate chaos into anything going forward. But there are enough SCA, history buffs and LARPers to show that fighting in close groups is a useful tactic even with every numbers of combatants.

She's not fine. She's boring, her model isn't cool, and neither you nor I can name a single one of her character traits from memory, largely because she doesn't have any that make her stand out from the generic chaos lord template, which makes her somehow even more generic than a literal blank slate because she's allegedly a named character with a narrative of her own that the players have involvement in or attachment to. The Beastmen Arcane Journal introduced Krawlmaw. The disciple of the Gavebeast who can turn entire towns of people into mutants with a single spell. In his company he has more primal/mutated versions of normal Beastmen and they have stat sheers with different stats, costs, base sizes and a shit ton more keywords.

They are pretty pricey and pretty much for fun narrative only fodder but it specifically says "we recommend mixing Gors and Chaos Spawn parts". I had 10 left from an old AoS start collecting and Spawn parts from a 40k army so decided to make a fun side project.

If you want them to be a more defensive/ranged unit take a shield and forgo the hand weapon because in CC the HW+Shield is effectively 2+ more armour save vs the great weapons. If I were you, I would go HW+Shield to have them be more of a defensive unit relying on their ranged to plink away damage rather than fighting in CC.

From the official factions the Elves seem to get the least amount of hobby pictures in these threads which I find to be surprising given how popular they used to be, but my gut feel overall is that all factions have their fans here.

I love the art they commissioned for Cathay. I was honestly a little worried with the artistic quality and direction of the art of old world before Cathay. The earlier books and core sets had art that looked to be like modern AoS or 40K (not a complement) but the Cathay art seems to be a return to more realistic Fantasy art from 6-7th edition.

We had a good variety of players right when TOW came out, but a lot of them seem to only post in /wip/ now, like lmao3dragon anon and at least 2 of our skaven anons. Because the software that cuts the models and algorithmically gets the most parts onto a sprue doesn't give a shit about what is intuitive for a human. Sticking arms to a torso is easy to understand, but cutting the model in 5 different places preserves detail and allows hollow casting which saves GW money as well as making it easier to put more stuff on less sprues, which also saves GW money. Smaller boxes take up less shelf space, which also saves GW money. You get the idea. Production quality and logistics.

The assembled models look good, but are a pain to build and paint. Essentially sucking the fun out of the hobby for anybody who actually engages with it beyond compusively buying "new thing". But GW doesn't care because most customers don't even build their models and once they have your money they don't care anymore either way.

Unrelated but I was listening to a podcast about The Wicker Man movie and it got me thinking about the idea of doing a Beastmen army with the general/warlord being a corrupted tree/forest spirit/wose who has come to see the Wood Elves as failures in defending the forests and want's to liberate everyone from the trappings of civilization, using the beastmen as the instrument to do it. I've always been interested in woodwoses/green men, it's an interesting subject. I love how Thief 1/2/The Black Parade do it as well. Something very sinister but not out of this world about it.

Generally in 500pts you want to use the weaker base heros and use those extra points for models, 4 units tends to be the go to for table coverage with a base level caster and melee hero.

You don't want to run big point cost Heroes at small scale. Your opponent will burn them down quick and you spent a whole of points to be in a deficit while they have two cheap Heroes as redundancy coverage and ones probably a wizard with a cheap annoying spell and its better to be annoying than dangerous. Its harder for a player to pick when its between a lvl1 shaman and a bulk of gor or ungors.

I mean the best way to fix them is to say that the lore presented in the Arcane Journals is Cathayan propaganda/what the wider population believes to be true and that they over exaggerates their good points and that's how the populations sees themselves and the dragons. Add bits about outsiders looking at Cathay and how the Cathayan act which reveals it's a heavily policed state, individual human life is not particularly valuable to the Dragons who see it as their right to rule over lesser beings and help keep them safe, and the population basically worship the Dragons to the point of zealotry.

They were originally designed to fit on 40mm bases, from what I recall. Can they fit? Probably, but it won't look good. Can they rank up beyond a simple 5x1 formation? Almost certainly not. You'd also be paying a ridiculous amount of money for a unit. $75 canuck bucks for 5 models is obscene. What would you even use them as? Chosen warriors of Nurgle? You'd still need at least 20 of them to make a unit worth taking. Get them from the second hand market if you must, but I still think it's a bad idea. Those were End Times models, you know.
