God I want to like the solar auxilia's new look but I saw one comment that their lower armor looks like a big metal diaper and I cant get it out of my head.
Man this game felt like a slog to play through
>our tacs just hid in the back the entire game
>the terrain meant every dead vehicle just jammed up the other units so no one could get anywhere
I did find out how funny running over power armor units with rhinos were though. My opponent Death Or Glory'd one with a centurion, gave it every status besides pinned and then got splattered.
Then one of my contemptor promptly ran into the squad of Sanctifiers that was accompanying his roadkill officer and held them there away from tacticals for the rest of the game while my other dread and command squads wiped out the rest of his scoring.

Is the reason I haven't seen more people talk about the kharybdis just because most people don't own the model? Getting Spartan level transport space for the price of a land raider seems kind of insane, especially given it can fly in from behind from turn 2+ and you can land multiple a turn unlike drop pods

If Minicompare can be trusted, I suppose there's this. Had to try Tortuga's MkII-III as well and those were apparently shorter? In any case they are probably comparable, albeit lanky bois who seem to have more dynamic poses so that muddies it a bit too? Tormentor/Infractor heads and helmets also seem to be longer.

The battle begins with the ships in orbit firing everything they have at the planet while the traitors on the planet fire back with missile platforms.
Simultaneously the Iron Hands begin the dropping of all their heavy armour. The shots fired by the loyalists mostly hit the void shields and cause a cacophony of noise and bright flashes.
Outside the fortress shields a battle titan sized quake bomb reshapes the surface.
Next the Raven Guard launch everything they have in a great wave of ships and drop pods.
The Salamanders launch their attack in waves with Cassian in the first drop pod assault wave.
The IH land at the EC zone and immediately start blasting apart the lighter tanks they face which were set up to fight against infantry. We follow Orth in his fellblade as they crash through the EC lines in seconds.
The IH infantry will drop a couple of minutes after them so they start blasting apart fortifications.
Next the Sota-Nul in Horus' fortress activates some new DM automata (unnamed, probably Tennebrax) that have been hiding in the mountains for days, they climb up the mountain and begin pouring flak into the incoming RG vessels. 824 vessels are what the RG launched in their vanguard, they get reduced to 784 before we cut away.
Mal tells Fabius to activate Appius next. He is a kakophani orchestrator and his scream goes through every vox around the planet. Every marine hears the screams in their helm and either get their ears blown or manage to throw it off. Corax is able to get Maun to land their ship over a traitor communication relay. He intends to take over their communications and use it for the loyalists. He swiftly does.

We cut to the solar auxila lander and the leader Astraea. 500,000 auxiliaries are dropping. They also get hit hard by the vox attack with some dying and many losing their hearing. Some landers crash due to loss of pilots most get down by eyeing the distance and following the flares of the lead lander.
Next we see a Salamander called Orasus who is the lone survivor of his gunship. He makes his way towards the fortress towards fires. Cut to Cassian who has become defacto leader on his front as all Salamanders defer to him with the vox network down.
We see Kades Nex infiltrate the fortress alone, he cuts up two SoH marines and uses the helmet of one to listen into their plans before making his next move.
EC and artillery from the fortress is starting to take a heavy toll on the IH vehicles.
The loyalists begin to regain vox capability thanks to Corax. The IH have also begun to put down their own shielded nodes on the plateau. Maun sees more and more landers keep coming from orbit as each marine ship disgorges it's load and moves off.
We cut to the Dracosian in orbit. A Salamander named Xaliscus is trying to free a gunship which has become jammed in it's launch cradle. He manages to free it and meet a friend of his from the Alpha Legion. We learn the full legion has just arrived and given him an order to remain on the Dracosian.
Next Pech ad Omegon have a chat with Pech admitting he has some misgivings about the entire plan.
Forrix is watching as ships both traitor and latecomer loyalists arrive around Isstvan V. It is the IW role to ensure there is a ship close to each loyalist ship which can destroy it easily when the word comes.
We cut to the Catura ship and admiral Klave as he has some thoughts about Perturabo taking over command due to Ferrus being groundside. They have been ordered to move back as the second wave moves forward.

Vulkan descends. He drop pods down next to Cassian and begins butchering DG marines, saturnine terminators drop pod down around Vulkan and start annihilating DG too. They set off the DG mines.
Orasus sees the mines blows from two kilometres away, phospex mines which send the gas billowing into the sky. He encounters a DG marine and is lucky to kill him as he quickly realises one bolt isn't typically enough to kill a fellow marine. He starts mag dumping into more DG marines that emerge from trenches and tunnels. Before he is overwhelmed two saturnine terminators find him and save him and tell him to stay with them. They hear the titans awaken in the fortress.
We see Jonah Aruken, princeps of the Penumbral Reaper march alongside the Dies Irae, except the titan quickly stops listening to his orders in its hunger to kill. The PR leaves its position and a gap in the defences of the Dies Irae. The titan begins to torture Jonah.
Orth in his fellblade is still fighting in the EC zone although using one barrel to try conserve ammunition. We are told they have lost as many of the legion in the last fifty minutes as in any single engagement of the Great Crusade. His fellblade falls into a deep trench and starts getting attacked by Thallaxi cyborgs. They manage to get free and rise up almost right Infront of the EC kakophoni marines.
We see Appius look at Orth's fellblade, he is outside to guard Fabius as he gathers geneseed. Following a path of destruction he focuses his attention on the fellblade.
From Orth's point of view we see rivets shoot free and the entire tank begin vibrating, a shell inside the breech block explodes and throws the turret free of the chassis with Orth inside.
Fabius forces Appius to leave the area and move to safer ground.

Mal surveys the battle from atop the fortress walls and updates Horus to the situation. He is told that Ferrus is Fulgrim's honour to resolve. He turns to look at the northern side of the fortress where the RG are reigning supreme in the cave and tunnel systems. He voxes Aximand to warn him Corax is likely in his area. He doesn't put much stock in it and proceeds to move into the tunnels with Ekaddon.
We cut to Kades Nex watching some RG lay mines along the tunnel the SoH will move along. The RG don't even know he is there. Aximand and the other SoH enter the tunnel and almost immediately get into a fight with RG.
Nex tries to kill Aximand but fails and is badly damaged, before Aximand can kill him Corax arrives leading to all the SoH trying to run away. The last we see of Nex he is standing against the wall of the tunnel having taken a new bolt pistol from a dead SoH.

We cut back to the Penumbral Reaper continuing its rampage as Jonah constantly gets commands from Dies Irae to return to formation.
Noticing the gap in Dies Irae's defence commander Cadmus of the Salamanders rushes the gap with thirty land raiders. They fire as they rush, trying to get into the area where the titan can't lower its weapons to fire back.
Jonah watches in horror as Dies Irae is attacked, the PR doesn't care much and keeps killing. The Dies Irae is heavily damaged by the land raiders but before a killing blow falls a warhound titan emerges from smoke to start destroying the land raiders. Cadmus has the land raiders circle the warhound to keep it distracted while their sponsons keep firing on Dies Irae. Just as the warhound cycles its weapons and is about to destroy the remaining land raiders missiles and bombs from black winged fighters and gunships blow its void shields and topple it to the ground.
Jonah watches everything while guilt tortures him. He sees (imagines?) his friend whom he killed, Titus Cassar, in order to become the princeps of PR. This dead body he sees talks to him and also tortures him. Possibly the titan doing it. In the end he seems to give in to the torture and PR does turn and go back to the side of Dies Irae, wiping out the remaining land raiders. Before he can be killed Cadmus uses his land raider to blow up the downed warhound titan and destroy everything in the area.
From the sky Maun can see that the detonation wasn't large enough to claim Dies Irae, and the Imperator lives.

We cut back to the auxila on the ground seeing the explosion from afar. Many start cheering. Many troops have their helmets off simply just to hear anything, even though the overwhelming noise will probably leave them deaf. They've scattered far off their intended landing zone so Astraea grabs onto an armoured carrier and orders everyone in armour to follow her lead.
We return to admiral Klave in orbit, he is the ranking officer until the second wave reaches their position. The Mechanicum asks for permission to commence their drop of titans, which he gives. Munitions across the fleet of the first wave are low as they have been bombarding the planet constantly for two hours. As some of the first wave were going to leave, orders come from Perturabo that they should remain in position to keep bombarding the planet. This starts to make Klave suspicious. Just then he gets a message from an inbound ship, it is Ingo Pech and he requests to come aboard. He brings an Iron Warrior delegatus called Grelth. Their reason for coming is to ensure clarity in following orders.
Pech and Grelth have small talk where Grelth admits that the Alpha Legion are the best liars and that the data shows the loyalists are currently winning the engagement.

Mal informs Horus that Dies Irae is pulling back while the rest of Mortis moves to engage legio Atarus. We see the titans of Atarus land and immediately move forward seeking to kill Mortis titans. Jonah hears the PR (I think) talking to him, using him to do what it wants, which is to go kill Atarus titans. Twin Atarus reaver titans called Red Naga and Bellum Sacrum move to engage a Mortis warlord called Breath of Thunder. Jonah (PR) manages to destroy Bellum Sacrum but Red Naga manages to get close to Breath of Thunder and use it's fist to punch up into its head and cause a reactor blow.
Next Kharn is among the WE in a big hall before the fortress doors. He is wearing his armour but it isn't connected to him so he is simply carrying the weight. Angron paces before the fortress doors.
Back to Orasus and the saturnine, the DG fire an orche coloured gas across the battlefield. Orasus has to throw away his damaged and take one from a dead DG to stay alive. When the gas finally envelopes them he sees the green peel off the saturnine and looks down to see his own armour reduced to grey ceramite. They advance into the gas knowing the DG are using it to cover their own attack. They don't get far before Mortarion dispatches the two saturnine and perches over Orasus. As his scythe swings down a hand grabs it. Vulkan has arrived. His armour is streaked with green due to the gas. The two sides clash.
Cut back to Mal and Horus in the strategium, Horus doesn't say much until he notices Mal staring at him. As they have a talk Horus asks if he thinks the Mournival would agree with what he is doing here, Mal tries to placate him but Horus is clearly unhappy with how things are but doing it because feels he must. As the IH get closer and closer to breaching the fortress Horus gives the word to unleash the WE.
(this is the last time saturnine appears)

The fortress doors open and the armour of the WE tears out, Kharn is atop a fellblade getting knocked about as it fires on the move. Angron leaps from a kratos to attack three RG tanks. As the WE leap from the tanks to engage the RG infantry Kharn tries to follow but lands heavily and can't rise before a RG is standing above him firing at him. His armour is damaged more but saves him and just before the RG can headshot him a random WE strikes the RG and hacks him apart. Kharn is left on the ground.
Maun is still flying around offering ground support where possible. As he seeks to leave and rearm a message come from delegatus Grelth. The deployment of all auxiliary forces has been sped up and he gives Maun the task of ensuring it goes right. Maun retorts back that it is a terrible idea to which Grelth gives Klave the vox and he manages to convince him to do it.
Aboard the Catura, Pech thanks Klave while Grelth can't understand not following orders. They get the location of all ground forces and immediately transmit it to all second wave ships.
We are told of how the information reaches each incoming legion and follow a Night Lord called Scarrix as he moves to enter his xiphon interceptor.
A brief montage goes over how each arriving primarch is preparing for the coming event.
Again we return to Astraea and her auxila. They have to give orders by written parchment as nobody can hear anymore due to the sounds of the battle rebounding off the mountain walls.
Back where she originally was most of the infantry have been left with her sub-commander Kengrace, he gives them all the order to advance. As they advance the ground erupts, sand and gravel shoots into the air. From the holes all around they hear chains in the dark, then the red butchers emerge.

Back near to the fortress Orth is somehow still alive and still in the blown off turret of the fellblade. He manages to get out and stumble across a damaged but functional sicaran tank.
Maun has a back and forth with Grelth as he is asked to give an update on how the landings are going. There is no space to land so they will have to land into enemy fire to which Maun protests but Grelth naturally says is within accepted parameters. Following this rather than leave and fully rearm Maun orders all RG vessels to start ground support to help as they can. He knows the IW have full command of landing procedures now and don't need his help.
We return to Klave who receives orders to cease surface bombardment as the units have become too mixed together with no clear targets. He doesn't agree with the order and Pech sneakily points towards the orders coming from Grelth to which Klave asks him if second wave ships are in position to take over surface bombardment. Grelth gives a non answer causing Klave to say they will stay until they reach one third bombardment munitions. Grelth says it is unnecessary to which Klave angrily retorts it is his duty to bring death to traitors. Grelth and him have a stare down until Grelth simply turns away.
We cut to the AL operative who sabotaged a void harbour earlier, Ada, she is aboard the ship Dust Oracle. It has ties to the Salamanders despite not being a legion ship. She has brought trolleys of unwanted munitions from the launch deck to storage. She manages to get them to accept them in, not knowing she has planted some explosives among them.
We cut to another AL operative called Korbesha aboard the IW ship Olympus Bellum. He is an overseer of a gun deck. When the gun crews are bust loading their guns and preparing to fire he drops a tool down into the line the ammo trolley will take.

Next Forrix is busying himself looking at the layout of the forces and where each ship is ensuring that each loyalist ship has an executioner alongside it or an AL team aboard ready to sabotage it. Perturabo informs him that he has been called to the surface and he leaves Forrix in control of the void element. Forrix sends the ready signal to Horus.
Mal informs Horus everything is ready. Horus tells him to pull everyone back except Fulgrim and to begin the massacre.
We see Appius wandering among the battlefield alongside Fabius.
Again we return to Orth who has wired himself into the Sicaran tank in order to control it as his body is failing him. He comes upon the retreating WE tank column and starts blasting them, he manages to destroy five in five seconds. He recalls his primarchs orders and plunges into the tanks again.
Back to Maun who has nothing left to fire in his ship and the same for all the ships flying alongside him. They see that the reinforcements are deploying and he orders to standby to evacuate whoever needs it.
Orasus continues his fight against the DG in the gas but before long they vanish back into the gas and Cassian orders all Salamanders to hold and pull back to the landing zones.
Astraea sees the landers and gunships of their 'reinforcements' coming.
Next Maun is told to take all RG ships back into orbit and clear the area to which he refuses.
He sees the legions pulling back from the sky, riding on tanks, on knights and thousands more just loping back on foot.
Despite their being almost no space the IW drop anyway and begin setting up emplacements and fortifications which sends a shiver down Astraea's spine.
Next we see Kor Phareon scoop dust from the ground to mark his forehead as he prays to chaos. Along with his sub commanders he gives the go ahead to encircle the incoming RG and gun them down when they try to get aboard their gunships.

Cut to Scarrix as he flies above the retreating legions, some look up at him and salute to which he smiles knowing that they will soon experience pure terror. Despite being ordered to strike the legion troops first he orders his underlings to target the auxiliary formations first.
Returning to Kharn on the ground, he is having an internal fight with voices in his head. As the voices ask him why he won't rise and continue he eventually says he fears he won't want to stop. He awakes to find one of Fabius' slaves above him, he immediately grabs its throat and rings the life from it. He feels the nails bite again for the first time giving him a pain he hasn't felt since falling on the ram blades on Isstvan III.
He finds he is surrounded by more of the slaves, he quickly minces them and goes in search of his legion.
Once again Klave is about to leave orbit when Pech quickly tells him to belay the order for a moment. Pech gives the order into his vox - Dionysus.
Aboard the Dracosian, the AL marine activates and orders his Salamander friend to draw his sword then shoots him anyway. He activates explosives which cause the Dracosian to ram right into an IW auxiliary ship. The reactors blow causing both ships to be destroyed.
The report quickly reaches the Catura causing delegatus Grelth to go over to see the details. As Grelth demands an update Pech stands closer to him and knows that Grelth's MK II armour is weak at the ear where the vox bundle is. He blows the brain right out of Grelth and turns to Klave and holsters his pistol. Klave is in shock. Pech immediately tells him to listen and that Horus has orchestrated the entire event as a trap.

Astraea stares at the incoming legions that are retreating towards the statue still lines of the IW. She realises they are waiting.
Mal follows Horus as he approaches the fortress doors. Horus steps into a land raider and prepares to go out into the warzone. He asks Mal if he wishes to see it first hand to which he shakes his head. Mal informs Horus that Ferrus has not pulled back and is still attacking. Horus doesn't care much. Horus hears his brothers say how they are ready to fire on the retreating legions, he tells them to begin.
Astraea hears gunfire come from the Word Bearer lines. Men around here begin to gaze in that direction but before they can cry out the IW begin to fire. Quake shells, mortars, rockets and prometheium bombs wipe out the auxiliary.
Kharn comes across Angron and his fellows half way to the fortress. None of them look at Kharn, they are all following Angron's gaze to the distant explosions. Angron roars 'wounds to the front' repeatedly until all the legion is roaring it towards the light.
We return to Kor Phareon as he orders for the RG to be let close so they may kill them face to face. He kills a RG marine himself and rips a heart out.
As Scarrix and his wing fly past his underling informs him that the Word Bearers were ready to fire on them if they tried anything. He spies a knight lancer among the retreating forces and goes in for the killing strike blowing it away with missiles.
Quickly we see the fate of Orasus, Iron Warriors walk through the gloom of the gas with volkites held low. He enters their field of view and realises his armour has been stripped of identity, before he can shout he is shot down by them. He dies thinking they thought he was one of the DG.
Next Forrix sends the orders for all ships to begin engaging their given target.

Going back to Klave and Pech, Klave isn't sure what to believe at first but then the reports come in that loyalist ships are being fired upon. But his ship won't be fired upon as the traitors believe Grelth and Pech are in control of the ship.
Pech informs Klave that he does what he does because they want to balance the future.
Korbesha aboard the Olympus Bellum gives the order to fire in the gun deck, they are targeting the IH ship Sigil Pyrities. He quickly leaves as the ammo trolley gets tipped by the tool he left on the track causing a shell to fall onto the hot breech, it doesn't take long to blow and rip the ships void shields apart from the inside.
Next we see the perspective of a marksman (Exodus) above the Urgall Depression. He watches Salamanders three kilometres away they are moving towards a group of Night Lords who are trying to appear unthreatening. The Salamanders pause and hold still unsure what to do. He helps them. He quickly begins head shotting Night Lords causing the Salamanders to go on the attack as the NL open up on them. He is hopeful some of them will manage to escape the battle as he begins thinning out more NL around the flanks.
Pech and Klave continue their conversation. Pech tells him that he wants him to leave and survive and if possible when it is all over return to collect loyal survivors. When Klave asks why Pech only replies 'For the Emperor'.

Klave agrees and leaves the system slowly, as he leaves he sees the ships of the RG, IH and Salamanders being destroyed.
Pech leaves on his own ship again.
The AL operative Ada sabotages the Dust Oracle to save it from the firestorm over Isstvan V.
The IW terminator strike onto the Ferrum and clear the engine spaces, they leave it a hulk for later reclamation.
The Night Lords attack a bulk carrier mainly filled with medicae wards, training decks and support staff. They link the ships internal hailer with their armours audio pickups so that the ship is filled with the noise of their armour and the hiss of their breath before the screaming starts.
Acronis the RG aboard the Ad Temperesta recon ship can only watch and record everything that happens.
Maun is desperately trying to stay a flight as fire starts coming from everywhere.
Cassian has a memory flash of a conversation with Horus where Horus told him to live for a future where they could live without war. As he does he sees Horus marching among his men and begins charging toward him. He throws SoH terminators and crushes marines between him and Horus until as he reaches Horus he feels Horus' mace smash into him and obliterate him.
Corax orders a breakout.
Scarrix is busy letting landers get into the air before shooting them down as he wants the people aboard to have some hope of getting off planet before he takes it from them. Next he spots Maun flying past.
Maun manages to land fast and low where Corax is so that he can embark. Scarrix noticed and begins chasing him. As the chase begins Maun almost loses Scarrix until Scarrix fires a missile after him and blows a wing off. This brings them crashing down into the mountainside.
Four hours have passed since the operation began.

Vulkan burnt down a whole hive city himself due to creatures he found there.

Dissies on vet tac strike me as a great way to kill your own models as fast as you kill the enemy, and even without better combat stats the bonus from a statused target means you punch first and score twice as many hits per attack as a normal WS4 enemy does. Giving the sarge a power weapon would help, though - can't strap an axe under his backpack or something?

if you want a single AV value, the average here is 12.667, so 12 all around - since we're effectively modifying a Characteristic by averaging them together, the rule on fractional Characteristics is that you round down (AoDR p168)
there's no other more reasonable way of working it out - 14 is Stormbird, 11 is a Xiphon, 13 is Thunderhawk; 12 is a drop pod or Storm Eagle, and despite the additional 90 points, the weapons of a Caestus are much better than those of the base Storm Eagle (or even the upgraded Storm Eagle), and it has an additional HP, so a 90 point premium is reasonable for your unpainted, 20 year old resin brick to appear on the battlefield in Modern Game

Any tips for a scheme and backstory that isn't donut steel and isn't a scheme aping one of the legions? Also, preferably something that could be interchangeable as traitor/ loyalist if I end up growing this side project?

As a fellow Chogo bro and SA enjoyer your best bet it is to use a scheme that is a military standard with a highlight secondary colour that could potentially match your legion or other legions easily.
So that means going with mil greys, dark greys, blacks, tans etc etc and then haivng your colour stripe as a red, white or black respectively.
I went with Dunkelgelb tan/dark yellow myself with red highlights.

There's been two whole chapters to a cult leader called Julatta and her cult's experience in the aftermath. They've been running nonstop on Terra trying to get away from Ultramarines.
At one point they are going down from the mountain the palace is on and find that a waterfall of blood has been formed from the billions of bodies.
Next they find hundreds of thousands if not millions of bodies stuck in the ground from the torso/shoulders up.
Dorn wants to immediately counterattack all traitors and chase them all down before any can escape.
Guilliman wants to do it step by step as he doesn't beleive they have the resources for what Dorn wants. He wants to retake Luna first and then Mars before going out further.
Terra is being kept alive by Guilliman, he had planned so far in advance that he had sent fleets of ships full of medicine and food a year in advance so they would all arrive at Terra when needed.
Many of the chaos aligned can't feel the warp or anything chaotic anymore so the most tied to it feel completely lost. Poessessed had the daemons pulled right out of them.
Kyril Sindermann is already a big proponent that the Emperor was right about chaos and any knowledge of it only leads to it gaining control of you. Xanthus approches him with the idea of forming an alliance.
The triitor gang encounter a DG and SoH cruisers trying to also escape through the Elysian gate but many Ultramarine hunter-killer ships are waiting amongst the 1000s of bits of debris. The gang have to abandon ship and jump into an old floating fortress.
Mouhausen pays a visit to the (astronomican?) and the high lord Zhi-Meng. She tells him that all the high lords should begin organising things for themselves while he had been of the mind that the primarchs and legions would get things running again. He agrees with her way of thinking. The seeds for the high lords actually having authority are laid.
They also discuss how the astronomican lit up when psykers died near it.

So if typical GW scale creep for TOW is consistent with what they did for Cathay, they should be a little bigger than a Guardsman/Solar Aux, but still quite a bit smaller than a space marine.
So what kind of bolter marks would thunder warriors use? Phobos? Or did they use autoguns?

Feral is feral, it's not supposed to be a restrictive term since Militia is a kitbash-heavy faction.
That said, the nu-marauders are gonna be a nightmare to kitbash, they're gonna be done in GW's modern sprue design that's common in TOW and AOS. If you want more kitbash-friendly feral people then I'd recommend Frostgrave Barbarians as a base.

Every time I see people do it, I rocket up some thallax nearby, and suddenly they go from scoring 12 points to 4 points (and that's if you don't status their backline tactical and/or deepstrike something to wipe them out) for the rest if the game and then they start calling my army "really strong" as if they didn't literally lose the game for themselves by refusing to take perfectly good melee units because "muh vanguard bad, why no line"

In the situation with vanguard, your opponent is minus 1+ reactions you idiot. That is not "barely coming into effect".
If your opponent is positioning in a way that his small reaction move can deny vanguard he is also easier to steal objectives from without any further investment because he - by necessity- has less models near the objective.
Yea, no shit if you only have one vanguard unit the other guy will be able to stop it scoring you a free 3vp by spending reactions.

The second
You generally need vanguard to make back the points if an enemy got to an objective first. More so if they did it with a Line unit.
You also need your own Line unit to make your own points separate from that to get ahead.
This encourages you to have a mix of both but since charging mindlessly with a vanguard unit doesn't immediately result in you winning points then it's completely useless in some people's heads.
The complains are generally pretty retarded. Like 'what if the enemy just moves away' ignoring that the reposition reaction is only 4" or that getting the enemy to move out of an objective is already a big win for you to begin with.
Somehow it's always the perfect situation where the enemy is positioned in a way that makes your unit unable to charge them but also still hold the objective.
You could also ask these people how you are supposed to make the points back if the enemy gets to an objective first but they'll tell you there's no way to do it and whoever gets the first turn always wins by a land slide
Either way the choice is barely even between Line and Vanguard. Line units are not going to get enemies out of objectives by themselves in most situations. Despoilers can do it but they have their own problems

the state of nogames
99.9% of lists need shooting, thats not even a discussion, its your most effective (or even viable) anti-tank and your best source of reliable damage. Running melee units is not an alternative to shooting, running shooting is likewise not an alternative to melee - ranged units lack the raw damage output to effectively deal with tougher targets.
You are at any time liable to be contesting or fighting over 3~ objectives (as is your opponent), smokescreen is the only defensive option available to dreads and vehicles.
All off these are going to be common needs and occurrences.
Armies and games are not about two 1500pts primarch deathstars in spartans squaring off with some tacticals on the side using the remaining points.
>>96814308
Not that anon, but amazingly people in my own local meta appear to have scaled up from Primarch + 5 unique terminators to Primarch + 10 unique terminators + sometimes a Primus Medicae, presumably because if everyone has a deathstar you need the best deathstar or you lose the fistfight anyway. Lorgar with five Phraetus has probably been the most consistent, though, those guys really rock and roll and they're not as expensive as ten Inner Circle or similar.
I play Mechanicum so I have not been partaking, but I'm looking forward to getting this AL allied det painted up because I want to see what kind of mess the Headhunter Bomb makes of Vulkan and friends.

don't understand the Phraetus hype
they're geared for fucking over melee units and getting close while doing damage with the Warpflame Mantle, right? but even if you give them Deep Strike you can't put Lorgar in the squad, which means they need a party van
and the party van is going to be vulnerable to Statuses just like anything else so if you can hit it with enough disposable melta Tarantulas it's not going to move until it blows up, or you can just blow it up with a larger boy from further away and leave the Fatties waddling towards you; and they're not going to be in a Storm Eagle because it's a fucking pain to assemble and costs twice as much as a Spartan
so in the edition where everybody's been complaining about their 1000+ HammerCata squads losing their melee advantage because they have no Set-Up Move you've got these even slower, melon-headed targets waddling out of the Large Raider between bouts of Pinning and trying to Charge the other guy's death star? and they're supposed to be good even though they basically have less chance of getting anywhere than Cata, despite the fact you can murder them from a mile away with your 3x Vindicares you're allowed now and they all ignore EW(X)
on top of which any time they take a Status they lose D3 W, and you can absolutely fuck them with Mind Burst as soon as they're out of the party van if they don't immediately get into combat

It's incredible on shooty units. Soften the unit on the objective up by shooting it with another shooty unit, then finish them off with the shooty unit that has vanguard. No chance to react your way out of that one.
Also RAW vanguard does work on a vehicle if you destroy it with melee. Vehicles can't move react away, so if somebody put the rhino transporting their tactical squad a bit too close to the objective you can get an even easier vanguard cash in.

Oh, thats very simple. Theyre the meanest dudes around if you want to mash deathstars into each other, theyre basically special made to beat all the other common deathstar choices to death with comparative ease.
They oneshot other saturnines (or regular custodes or EW(1) terminators), are themselves very resistant to the most common weapons those sorts of units have (reducing thunder hammers to only 1 damage) and have a good invuln on top of everything (plus the flamers for clearing power armor).
As a deathstar theyre a meta counter to other deathstars. On their own theyre viable since you just take a small unit of 3, have them deepstrike on behind any lines, flamer someone to death and then just be really annoying to deal with because it takes six lascannon wounds to kill one.

lascannons have also been made less powerful as AT, theyre still going to be fine for killing lighter vehicles, but it takes a LOT of them to kill Av14.
Lascannons went from "the best for basically everything" to a jack of all trades master of none, still good for killing heavy infantry and lighter vehicles, but no longer the best for any job. His mental stats are even higher than Primarch average.
They don't seem much slower than your average Cataphractii out of a transport, and they're a lot more efficient at punching things while giving the primarch majority T6 Seeker protection. There are worse ideas, although if I was using them I'd probably deep strike 3-4 of them and collect a lot of their points back with the almost guaranteed particle shredder annihilation of the most expensive power armour unit I could find.

Lorgar is not Malefic, so the squad with Lorgar in just uses his much better stats instead. Previous anon was talking about statusing them to chunk them for d3 wounds, which I think is likely not feasible at Ld12 Cl11. Besides, the whole squad needs to be Malefic to gain tactical status immunity, so they would run if Lorgar did. That's probably a downside, I think most people would prefer to take d3 wounds on one of their five big lads rather than have an 800pt squad Pinned.

Don't forget the demolisher is also cheaper, and a blast weapon meaning it's almost impossible to miss now with the 3.0 blast rules Even if the to hit roll fails you only scatter 1d6
It's just very reliable, and can also deal with infantry due to being a blast weapon.

Sure, but a ~3% chance to chip D3 wounds off the 15W Phraetus escort is probably not worth the attention of most of your status weapons, since Malefic models are immune to negative mental stat modifiers. Closest you can get is 7.4% with the Effrit aura, as far as I'm aware. May as well plink with havoc launchers or equivalent stray weapons if possible, but I wouldn't use it as a generic counterstrategy as opposed to getting out of the way of the big slow stompy boys. It's a harder deathstar to deal with than most, since Pinning 3 has a pretty decent chance to leave any normal Primarch unit stationary for an entire turn and they typically take nonzero damage from Seekers or similar, but good positioning and screening handles them fine.

A squad of 10 vets with TLC kills 3 phraetus before they can swing. The remaining two phraetus kill like what 3 vets? So russ + a 10 man command squad could do it I guess? Or russ + 10 terminators, but that seems kinda ass due to the cost.

No, not nearly. Its mostly down to their army buffs being a lot less impressive (generally restricted to a niche turn 1 buff if you take certain troops and some prime slots). They are also uniformly capped at a 4++ now, can have their statistics modified by things like fear and phage and can fail status checks (so you can pin them, rout them and so on).
In combat theyre more or less the same, still nasty beatsticks and whatnot, some (like russ) suffer from the loss of brutal, but in general theyre still strong in combat. Its just that now theyre "just" a big combat dude for a lot of points, rather than potentially game warping.
Russ is still a strong combatant and still designed for duelling, but he isnt the omega best fighter or anything (for the points thats probably vulkan).

If you insist on doing it with a take-all-comers deathstar rather than actually tailoring your approach to your targets, ten hammer Varagyr will do it with weight of hammer attacks. The benefit of the Phraetus deathstar is that it doesn't give a fuck about morale or status, it's incredibly durable against shooting and it's a points-efficient takedown against smaller elite squads, but since they can't fit a max-sized squad in the Spartan and still include Lorgar it can't invest as many points as conventional Bulky (2) elite terminators can.
>>96816914
My maths has 10 TLC vets take down two phraetus, then lose 5 models to the remaining 3 because TLC Praetorian Chosen don't get an invuln, but yeah, they go pretty even. They're not unkillable, they're just good. Personally I prefer them in non-deathstar form because those S6 AP3 flamers actually kind of ruin things on deep strike, you can't reposition away from DSing units and they don't care about statuses because templates autohit and they swing last anyway.

The Prime slots they give can be pretty handy, admittedly. Vulkan giving FNP6+ to all his troops, White Scars giving them all Expendable or any traitor primarch piling on the Malefic can do some work. They're still not the nonsense machines they used to be, and thank the heavens for that. They are 400-500pt beatsticks that beat anything other than their brothers in a 1v1 duel and are very hard to kill without highly specialist tech, but they don't make your army twice as strong.
One odd quirk that the general flattening of Primarch support effects has produced is that a lot of the beatstick primarchs are nearly as good at army support as the others. Alpharius has pretty mediocre buffs, Angron has excellent ones because Fast on R1 is basically what you want with a World Eaters horde list.

It's pretty, stylish and has one of the only realistic chances of scoring lots of Vanguard with all those ranged units, but I recommend getting a bunch of Comptroller scoring from somewhere else because Myrms are all Vanguard, so you will really suffer on objectives. One neat quirk is that a Master Sarge myrmidon lord with a plasma fusil or a darkfire cannon is surprisingly good in a duel, since BS6 from cybertheurgy lets you unload critting plasma into peoples' faces every round. the "regardless of that objectives value" in vanguard is the kicker, as the logic is:
>obj is worth 3 points
>vanguard makes it 1
>comptroller adds X to the amount you score, it does not increase the objectives value
>>96817759
That requires ignoring everything else.
Yes, vanguard specifies "regardless of objective value", but its not "this unit treats all objectives as value 1", it specifically states that a unit with the rule can only score one point for controlling the obkective.
Comptroller and line dont modify the value of an objective, but they do modify the amount you score for holding it (which vanguard states can only ever be 1 in the end)

Actually the funny thing is vanguard actually does work with line like the loophole the retard thinks works with comptroller, because line specifically doesn't add to the value for controlling objectives but just straight out gives you extra victory points for controlling an objective. That being said, as far as I can tell the only way to get this to happen is specifically daemon harriers and calvary, who have both vanguard 3 and can get up to 3 line from desecrators.

If Comptroller DID work with Vanguard like that it would make Mech lists a lot more varied, since right now the vast majority of the squads I want to put Magi with are either Vanguard, Automata that can't score or fast enough that a Magos slows them down massively. Getting 3/3 Vanguard/Scoring out of Myrmidons would make a Myrmidax list much more attractive, but I don't think it does work that way.
Failing that it would be nice if the 30k Skitarii they previewed had unlocked Arcana, but I don't have high hopes.

It seems pretty straightforward that you're meant to take 1 Damage 1 hit each time a Malefic Vehicle takes a Status, though I'm more interested in what would happen if a Transport could get Malefic. iirc they've taken Aetheric Dominions away from the Dark Mech units that used to have them, so I guess Daemon Tanks don't play fun with the Statuses.

If it works RAW (anything that would inflict statuses inflicts autowounds, vehicles don't have a wound characteristic and thus ignore autowounds) Malefic Explorators are actually quite good for them, because they have lots of mean, shooty glass cannon infantry they would love to roll up the board with while hopping in and out of an unglanceable transport to deny enemy shooting/charging. Still, more of a gimmick than anything else, most people aren't firing weapons that can glance at Raiders anyway.

Oh yeah, same with a bunch of stuff, it's very much in the should-be-in-the-FAQ category. Luckily it's a relatively minor case of that.
It is mildly odd that Alpha Legion likes Malefic more than almost any other legion due to minor quirks in the rules - Headhunters go nuts with Darkmech malefic buffs, Phraetus are great Rewards of Treason steals, their detachment makes it easy to line up a few daemon tanks. If I didn't know better I'd think Tzeentch was nudging them gently in an unpleasant direction, since despite being about daemon stuff Word Bearers don't actually have much that works with Malefic besides Lorgar being able to join Malefic squads.
