Went to check how much would it cost to update my army to 3ed, so it could be fun to play again. I realised that not only I would have to buy a practicaly whole army, but that it would cost me over a 1000$ to do. No resin models, no shoulder pads, no transfers, no upgrade packs or legion specific stuff. I think I got priced out of the hobby lol.

>How do you fancy the Shattered Legion rules, too little too late or enticing

WAAAY too little, WAAAY too late. Mechanically, the only good combination is EC+SoH+BA which let enables a MSU list to pretty much always hit on a 3+ against even WS5 and higher targets.
God it's weird how much melee focus they put on SL and BlackShield options when this is shooting edition.

At least Blackshields can subvert that by going "Fuck objectives. Fuck tactical statuses. Fuck listbuilding and FUCK YOU." with various Oaths of Moment.

Lmao, in what fucking way? Way more LOS blocking, charging out of any transports, set up moves denying overwatch... Most ranged units are lucky if they get to shoot once or twice at the target you actually want to shoot them at, and ranged weapons lethality has been nerfed into the ground.
Anonymous No.96836334 [Report] >>96836353 >>96836471
>>96836284

It's also the only list where Warmongers are actually viable.
Even without literally any related Oaths meant to enable him, even if the unit he deepstrikes with takes a wound and becomes suppressed... that now makes them T5, or even T6 if he's doing it with Terminators.
But there's also multiple ways to mitigate that even further here.

>Option 1 Broken Helix Clones
Since he only get's a unit suppressed if you take a wound, what about DS in with Clone Terminators, for a T5 2+ 4/5+ Invuln followed by a 5++ damage mitigation check? You can't get supressed if you don't take a wound after all.

>Option 2 Who even cares? Panoply of Old
You could do this other ways but... who even cares if you get suppressed if everyone has Alchem Heavy Flamers anyway? Snapshots? Who the fuck cares when you can lay down multiple Poison 2+ templates with Assault? I guess you could do this particle shredder saturnines too?

>Option 3 BEEP BOOP I AM A ROBOT
Just sidestep the weakness in it it's entirety, proclaim THE FLESH IS WEAK and become status immune Automata with no actual downsides to this whatsoever. You took Reaper of Lives as your second oath, you don't even NEED to read these linked cogitator rules anymore. You're here to kill until your reach your Zapp Brannigan Limit.

Not seeing much tanks used here. Anything with rear AV 11 or lower just gets bum-rushed by cheap marine units and wrecked with krak grenades, the tougher tanks just get ignored as they don't kill enough marines to force them off objectives.
Is everybody not playing with the amount of terrain recommended by the rulebook? Or did those absolutely retarded terrain house rules from some YTroon channel really become used by most people?

Warmongers aren't bad in Death Guard either, you can drop in a giant pile of alchem-flamers there too and 10+ of them is enough Poison 2+ to kill even termie squads with a good angle. I think Phraetus are probably the kings of the deepstriking unreactable flamers, though, they don't remotely care if you shoot them a few times with Interceptor. You can't status them and their Warpfire Mantles trigger in your shooting phase as well if you have to roll saves. Can't React-move away, so three Phraetus dropping in can pick the best template angle to stack 12+ hits on the most expensive MEQ they can find and reduce them to soup with S6 AP3.

I am considering the world's most snowflake allied det to represent my Istvaan III army - Mech primary, Shattered Legions allied, Alone And Forgotten allied for the pile of insane world eaters who would be a single squad in a land raider if they were a normal force. Just about fits the platoon of marines + vehicles I need in the 1500pt allowance, although it's quite tight.

>‘Does something disquiet you, Mal?’ asks Fulgrim from where he walks beside the equerry.

>The III Legion zone is quiet but not silent. Sounds reach from the distance. Even in empty passages there are shouts that rise and then cut off. There are rustles that become the rattle of servo-carts carrying ammunition. The murmurs of vox-horns fade into laughter.

>‘No, lord,’ says Maloghurst. But he can feel fingers touching his back under his armour, just over the healed wound that has twisted his frame. It happens sometimes – ghost sensations caused by nerve damage – but this time the fingers feel real, soft and warm on his scars. ‘Just the old wound,’ he says.

>‘Ah yes,’ says Fulgrim. The primarch nods, understanding. There is something both vital and cadaverous about his face. New jewels glitter on his armour and dot his cheeks like crystallised tears. His hair falls in a perfect wave of ivory. But the edge of the primarch’s red cloak is frayed, and there are stains on his armour, tiny flecks of what might be dried blood.

>‘You know, Fabius might be able to do something for you. He is quite remarkable. His works are wonders.’

>‘I am fine, lord,’ says Maloghurst.

>‘Just so, Mal,’ says Fulgrim. ‘Just so. You are the epitome of devoted duty, ever able, uncomplaining despite the weight on you. My brother is fortunate indeed to have you at his side.’

>‘Flattery, lord.’

>‘Truth, Mal, only truth.’ Fulgrim is the only other primarch to call him Mal. To the rest he is Maloghurst, equerry, emissary. It’s a claimed intimacy that Mal cannot reject, but here and now it feels as unwanted as the ghost fingers on his back.

Indulge in the artillery options, they're fragile and will die hard to enemy artillery trying to suppress them but they're extremely cheap compared to Legion, Solar Aux or Mechanicum sources of long range large blasts. What type is up to you, although I personally favour the siege mortars and big rocket batteries.

Don't try to make infantry who can individually go toe to toe with Marines - it's possible but it's too damn expensive. Your heavy guns, ogryns, squads of rad grenade animal handlers etc. are probably going to do most of the actual killing.

1. Did Maloghurst learn secrets to having his own variants of the Gal Vorbak (called the Luperci) from the Word Bearers? It makes sense, I reckon.

2. Did Fabius Bile's "Terata" (test subjects made from enemy Legionaries) also have some daemonic influence on them, or is it just genecrafting to make them into monsters?

Forgefather T'kell and Artellus Numeon, the two primary Salamanders lords, neither of which gets a miniature and Numeon just forced to yeet himself into a volcano to buy Vulkan a rez and T'kell just given a random fetch quest instead of actually leading wars. Resulting in the awkward situation that the game has zero non-primarch characters for salamanders in 15+ years.

Plasma cannons, like plasma guns, dont kill by being singularly dangerous per hit, they kill by simply providing a lot of high S hits reliably.

You dont overcharge, you dont even care about breaching very much, youre literally just using it for the S7(?) blast template, because generating a lot of S7 his is enough to eviscerate most infantry.

Basically Isstvan 5 from the point of view of the Loyalists, with a few scenes from the Traitors as connective tissue.
If suffers a bit from not trying to repeat the I5 scenes from other BL books like Fulgrim or The First Heretic. So if you haven't read those you'd miss the context of scenes and the ending would feel a bit rushed.

IMO, the biggest issue of the plot is the loyalists never stopping once to wonder about if they can trust the WB, NL, IW and AL.

You can tell French also helped wrote the Isstvan FW Black Books, there's a lot of references to events and characters from them.

Some of those make sense. Word Bearers have been pretending to be loyalists longer than the rest of the traitors combined more or less, they're probably pretty good at it by now. Iron Warriors are fucking near impossible to read due to autism, and Alpha Legion are Alpha Legion.
That said... yeah, who the fuck trusts the Night Lords? They're literally wearing grandma's face as a trophy ont heir shoulder pads. They've got fucking batwings on their helmets.

The rank and file not really questioning things enough is one thing, the guys who come across as being the biggest morons here are the Primarchs on the scene. We're supposed to believe that Vulkan, Corax and Ferrus Manus are three of the greatest generals in the galaxy, and not only are they agreeing to the dumbest plan since the bodyguard of King Harold uttered the words "Look Sire! An arrow! Try to catch it with your teeth!" at Hastings, not one of them even seems to have considered some kind of contingency plan for further treachery.
Not one of them, in the face of Horus, the Warmaster himself, turning traitor and taking the Death Guard and the EMPERORS CHILDREN with him!?
(Nobody is surprised by Angron going traitor. Except perhaps that it took him so long.)

Rank and file not asking questions is one thing, even Ferrus Manus maybe get's a pass due to him going completely fucktarded with rage. But the other two do not have a goddamn excuse.

Still working that part out myself, so far I have two ideas
>Loyalist route
A splinter company of NL’s took such a thrashing that they saw the writing on the wall; being a traitor isn't very sustainable. When they found a holdout of WS’s instead of turning their guns on them they lent them their shoulder in hopes to get back into the good graces of the Imperium. Fast forward a few months of fighting and they’re all practically brothers in arms
>Traitor route
Isolated from their legion, a WS company with prominent terran-born marines in leadership positions let their true loyalties show by asserting their allegiance to Horus. Carving out their own little warpath, they eventually find themselves meeting their match, only to be aided last second by a NL company. Never one to waste time trying to recuperate forces, the WS’s blazed on with their new NL allies in tandem, reeking havoc across systems in mindless pillaging and massacring

Tried out an onslaught mission today, a few takeaways
>mission puts a lot more onus on the attacker to engage with objectives then I realized, since you score 1 per uncontrolled objective at the end of each of your turns vs the attacker scoring 1 objective per turn for a maximum of 6 per + line, he gave upon the objectives in my deployment zone until he realized it was literally impossible for him to win if he did that and rushed for them at top at turn 3.
>myrmidons are absolutely not as scary as they used to be, their guns are mean but really only good for chaff clearing, and they're only able to kill like Tacticals in melee, they'll probably crumble to any serious melee unit
>jump packs are real scary dawg, having a guaranteed 16" threat range basically made it impossible to avoid melee with only a 12" no man's land
>vindicators continue to be terrifying and I need to find something to deal with them at some point. Mech really struggles with actually putting vehicles down rather than statusing them, and those 6D blasts hurt
>the brass scorpion kicked ass and took names as expected, but the blood slaughterers performed really well too. Part of that is just because the mission rules let them pop up for surprise buttsex on a unit before dying painfully, but they're super fast and have a shitload of attacks and are inconvenient to remove for their point cost. They're also hilariously pretty blast resistant because of their huge legs lol
>archmagos had a very funny challenge arc this game, he basically blasted through every other character in his army between myrmidon's path, seize the initiative and flurry of blows, but on the last game turn the legion champion got 4 critical hits, reduced him to 1 wound, and the lowly Praetorian master Sergeant finished off with his power Fist in a reaction, which earned both slay the warlord and last man standing to tie the game.

If reaching combat is the problem, roll 2d6? More variance than 1d6 rr, but at least now there's that pre-charge move thing
>Line needs to be reworked
Many people didn't like Actions, but I thought they were comfy. If Line required the unit to not fight at all to gain the extra VP, that would be workable. Line units already need to not be engaged, but by definition, they can all shoot just fine.
So even if they were both Line 1, Tacticals would be better Line than Despoilers because one unit can attack and the other one can't.
But if Line required inaction, then either unit would be equal, and in fact Despoilers would have a niche as front Liners who can bite back if you try to interrupt them in melee. Which they can do now, but don't need to because you're still better off using Tacticals as those don't need to be in melee to fight back
