smashed on discord (the game will be ran on discord b/c there isnt really a good VC alternative) (I get alot of solicitors with that real english word name so I have a default response that is a bit harsh, be forewarned)

Fully fleshed out KotBL to start. West marches style campaign meaning if you want to show up, if you cant you cant, no issues either way. For now I am thinking a session on the ides of each month, the 13th in most months but the 15th in March, May, July, and October but as/if more people join more sessions will be conducted.
I will not giving a ton of info to the players about how the system is working, in a super old school style. Players will still roll and have a sheet but you will not know everything that is going on in the rules.
It will probably be rather lethal if you don't take things slow
THIS IS NOT 5e OR ANYTHING CLOSE, if you come in assuming that it is like 5e you will be wrong.
I tend to run mostly theater of the mind so no VTT. If you want maps you will have to draw one yourself, there may be some regional maps available for purchase in game but no guarantees those are any more accurate than what a medieval peasant could draw without cartography gear

Anyone else just kinda surprised to see people wanting to play TTRPGs online anymore? I feel like the thrill has gone. I have a couple games going on but we mostly just play D&D now, with a few excursions into something else. Used to run loads of non-D&D games. Just feels like my imagination isn't there anymore. I collect a lot more miniatures now. I feel like I need to buy a miniature for every monster I plan to use. It's like my imagination is failing me, and a 2x2 inch wood circle on my battlemat isn't good enough anymore. I don't have aphantasia but after 6 years of wagecucking I am starting to get it. Now I am a NEET again and I was hoping my imagination would come back, but I think it's a "getting older" thing and not a "wagecucking burnout" thing. I used to listen to ambient music and feel deeply about my settings. There was some je ne sais quoi about what was in my mind that I could never truly convey with words. I made machinimas and even amateur film projects trying to convey that. Just for their own sake. I would find a niche RPG and start a discord text game just to try playing it. It just all feels so empty now. I really don't know how to feel about this. I was always okay with the fact that I never became a published author, because the median age of authors was something like mid 30s, so I accepted that it was ok my writing still kinda sucked, cause I still had time. Now I feel like I can barely write at all. And I feel like everyone feels like this. Or should. I feel foreign to this community now. It really sucks. I see someone's ad for trying out some new RPG and think, who even gives a fuck?I see people talking about VtM lore and I always thought it'd be cool, especially if set in a nearby city I am slightly familiar with. Or some other cool premises for games my friend has. And it just feels like my excitement to actually play them is not there. RPGs almost feel like a waste of time now. It fucking sucks and Idk how to cope.

When I say the core is LotFP I literally mean the core. The project started out of my hatred for d20 games clashing with liking tiny bits and pieces from a ton of different d20 games. I used LotFP as the base as it is the d20 game I hate the least. I tried to put emphasis on the fact that this is no longer an osr.
I don't want to get too deep into the rules as I want to keep potential players in the dark but some martial classes can get some powers, npc spellcasters use 13th age enemy spellcaster powers to speed things up, and there was some inspiration around magic items

I think I'm done guys. Trying to play tabletop has given me too much stress for too little return. Nobody wants to listen to the GM, no GM wants to set standards, nobody wants to read the rulebook, and nobody wants to care about the setting. Coddling players leaves them feeling entitled to take up all of your time, criticize them once and they'll blow up in your face. It feels like if you didn't win the player lotto years ago, you're SOL. When I first started my journey I didn't think my criteria of a player that could be summed up as "a theater kid who adores mechanical fidelity" would be so impossible to find outside of a mirror. The entire culture is anathema to what I enjoy.

There is only one way forward.
You are perma dm and you just have to demand respect from your players.
Players are unthinking unfeeling agents of chaos that must be guided to order and deserve your undying distain.
There may not be winners in table top, but we can all lose if they are allowed to exist unfettered. Just don't ever tell them that, players need to think you are on their side or better that there are no sides at all. They are like children, or small animals being guided by whimsey, novelty and destruction.
That's how I see it, I DM mostly randos and they seem to like our sessions.
Anonymous No.96879583 [Report] >>96879629
>>96879464
>You are perma dm and you just have to demand respect from your players.
It would be nice if I could do that, but I was talking mainly from the perspective of a GM.
There are literally no players that can handle what I throw at them when I'm actually having fun with the game instead of going through the motions throwing the weakest softballs.
The enemies must not only be weak, they must be incompetent and incapable of recognizing how to put up a fight against a stronger opponent.
An endless stream of jobbers that wouldn't last past the first episode of an average show, whether live action or anime.
Last session I ran months ago left wondering at multiple points why they didn't seem to care about my perspective at all.
>Just don't ever tell them that, players need to think you are on their side or better that there are no sides at all
That's part of what I meant about needing to coddle them at all costs.
If you present a single challenge to randos they blow a gasket.
If you get irritated at them after weeks of effort they self destruct.
That is simply too much time to waste.

>There are literally no players that can handle what I throw at them when I'm actually having fun with the game instead of going through the motions throwing the weakest softballs.
Damn, that's rough.
I DM mostly LGS games and yeah I do have to pull some punches in early sessions. We do 4 session seasons the first two sessions I try to establish that there are consequences to this setting and the last two sessions I try to challenge the players.
I find that you need to first establish your authority. Second establish the setting as a place where challenges do occur and then and only then can you begin to challenge players because then it is the setting/game that is the obstacle, not the DM.

Robin Hood and his Merry Men embark on a quest for justice; a heist on the Tower of London, King John's fortress, where the money unfairly taxed from his subjects is being stored. However, they have limited time, for they know that by tomorrow morning the money will be shipped to France to fund the royal family's military efforts to retain their fiefdoms in the mainland. This is their only chance to restore justice to their fellow Englishmen.

The Tower of London is not only the royal palace and the king's personal bank and coin mint, it is also the prison in which the enemies of the crown are locked. This small citadel is patrolled by the king's retinue and it is rumoured to be inhabited by wild beasts from distant lands. The castle has towers which serve as jails and workshops, a chapel and the king's quarters, as well as four main entrances and a moat. Getting caught red-handed while the king is soundly asleep is not an option.

The players, who will be Robin Hood and his Merry Men, will decide how to break into the Tower of London to retrieve all the wealth hoarded by King John, whether to release prisoners who may join their ranks if they prove to be persuasive enough and perhaps snatch a few coins from the mint and take some of the royal goods as a bounty. Encumbrance may hinder their roguery.

.。.†:*・゜.。†.:*・゜.

• 5 Pre-generated characters assigned randomly (So no one will fight over who gets to play Robin Hood).
• Time limit: 3 hours. If exceeded, dawn will arrive and the money will be shipped to France.
• System: Lion & Dragon (B/X retroclone)
• Stealth and ingenuity are key. Combat is risky. There is no magic (we may include a few, rare ghosts if all players agree).
• The map of the Tower, while not exhaustive, will be historically accurate.
• Date & Time: 21-23 on Friday or Saturday, or Sunday from 15 to 19:30 (GMT-3)

Fun does not exist in a vacuum; fun must be created. The creation process needs many things to be successful, players tend to be in opposition to these processes and that is why they must be correctly labeled as agents of chaos as opposed to the GM who is an agent of order.
Here are a list of things that are crucial to the fun creating process that players tend to grate against
>limitations
>consequences
>coherence with the setting
>taking turns
>taking initiative
The list can continue but I digress.

Also looking for people interested in Sword & Planet game "Warriors of the Red Planet". If you like John Carter of Mars (not the awful Disney film), Gor, Dark Sun, The warrior and the sorcerer, Revelations of Mars, etc. Hit me up as sabri#2888 on discord:

Here's the lore:

> After a cataclysmic war destroyed planet Grythar, the inhabiting races were left in a barren wasteland of crimson sands under two scorching suns and two pristine moons. The marble ruins of what used to be a thriving civilization litter the landscape. Tyrannical wizard-kings are evil geniuses who rule from their spires with an iron fist by means of their preternatural techology and eldritch sciences, which they employ to build armies of bronze automata, airships and rayguns.

>The Free Tribes of Men, originally from a distant blue planet with stronger gravity, are ruled by insurrect warlords who rebel against these wicked sorcerer-scientists. Given their strength, many men earn a living as sky pirates, bandits, mercenaries and gladiators.

>The Brigdzids, a small, big-headed reddish race of bug-eyed aliens, use their advanced brains and psychic powers as minions of the mad witch-kings, in exchange for power and under the threat of annihilation. Some still yearn for freedom and peace.

> The Shaldon, yellow reptilian marauders of the desert, live as isolated nomads, working as spies, thieves and explorers, away from the murmurs of the city-states of Grythar.

> The Ankrek, insect-folk of the jungle, are a warlike hive. They can barely utter the language of Grythar due to their anatomy, and see other races as enemies to be crushed and devoured.

> The Allunad, fishmen of the seas, live in underwater palaces, hidden from the dangers of the surface they seldom visit, being the keepers of the depths.

I think you just need people who appreciate what you write. Maybe that's why it's meaningless to you. You don't have to be a published author to play a game and no one gives a fuck about the average age, life doesn't work that way.

I feel the same about videogames. I used to enjoy them but now I don't care. It started with me not being able to catch up with the latest releases due to not being able to afford consoles. Then didn't feel like playing open-world games because they were overwhelming. Then other games lost their appeal. I tried a few but I no longer enjoy them.

Cheer up. I've been GMing for 25 years now and met tons of people. I love teaching new people how to play and inspire them to reach out for better games and better roleplaying techniques. I also had people who wanted me stay and play with them but a good GM knows when to end a game also "favourite dish grows bland if tasted too often".

Ther will be shitty players or players that lack direction. There are also generation gaps but all of this can be overcome with skill, knowhow and tools that can be aquired.

Rules to GM by:
- Never let a shity system bog the game down
- Use tools from older games that you know they work
- Include music and art
- Save good ideas for later games
- Use chatbots to finetune or retheme things.

There were some funny conversation partners but nobody that could play their way out of a paper bag. Believe me, if I could rewind back to those days I'd have chosen a different path. I'm not sure what to do anymore as a GM
Almost all my games have died out and some point in time due to the players hating one another in some manner

I've made adds in the foundry discord, and sometimes on reddit
Even with a vetting process like a form, it doesn't accurately capture what a person it like and that's done with time
The idea is now is to look for an already established group of friends and just run something for them
I believe I am doing something wrong as not herding them better but I'm not sure

Anyone had any luck with people in threads like these in the recent years? I might just give it a shot with some anons

A TTRPG is like an ouija board, the chaos from input is what creates the fun, otherwise you'd just be running a simulation and you don't need the players for that.
You are a perma nogames worldbuilder who jerks off over his creation and only wants rats that chase cheese in his little maze.

Rather famously Arneson went way further than I am going to go, his players knew nothing and had no sheets. I just want to start off with the players knowing less than normal and drip small amounts more as things go along

He's not wrong that players hate limitations, consequences, and coherence. I can also vouch that they grumble about initiative and taking turns.
There is no chaos to input when it's all freeform garbage and you make me, the GM, waste my fucking time learning all of these rules and trying to help you when you never had any intention of LEARNING to play.

No, what I actually said is that you didn't have players, which is correct, because a player is someone who plays the game. Since they weren't playing the game, they weren't players.

Any system that's not the above, would like to try out some mech stuff if possible. I'm currently GMing a game of Lancer so it would be neat to get some inspiration. I'm open to jumping in a new game or something already in progress.
