Aside from the Black Hawk KU and Battle Cobra any other IS mechs that a. ape clan mechs and b. share the name? I read empire aflames again and it got me wondering because I wanted to paint up a TSDF lance.
Also this feels more like guesswork since the book doesn't go too in depth but what is unit availability like in EA? The supremacy controls tikinov, irian and hesperus, that's a lot of faction specific factories. And the axman too, how did that one come about? Considering it needed things from the lyran davion and liao parts of the fedcom which doesn't exist.

I see a lot of that too, but it was never true, Battletech changes plenty. Even within each "edition", there are changes. Different printings of Total Warfare have stripped and added entire rules, and drastically changed how other rules function. Some of the playtest rules aren't even new, they were just changed decades ago and are being tentatively brought back.

What Battletech doesn't do is completely change the underlying core, almost nothing changes that would invalidate an old record sheet. Even the one change that they've been teasing as potentially happening is to remove an obscure piece of clan equipment that's just two other pieces of equipment put together because it's redundant. But that's not the first time record sheets have changed. It's rare and they keep it that way for a good reason, but it has happened now and then. Someone who hasn't played Battletech for two or three core book replacements will still recognize most of the game, but the details of individual rules will be different.

In the original Battledroids all the heat sinks occupied a critical slot that was changed when the 1st edition of Battletech came out.

Rule changes have always been a thing, the main difference between Battletech and Warhammer is that those rule changes don't remove figures from the game, just the Eras.

Hey Anon, I think you did pretty fucking great, for tabletop mini's that's fantastic.

The only thing I think i'd suggest would be 'highlight colours' and by that I mean putting on details in colours that work well with your base. IE: Yellow unit insignia's, maybe some mud and shit around the lower limbs that suits your base. Other than those (very minor) details I'd be quite proud of that and you should be too.

Well done mate. I'd love to see more.

Had the most fun I've had in a game of BT in a while. Jade Falcons vs ComGuards, I was the Falcons. I had a Summoner Prime, Mad Dog Prime, Uller B, Night Gyr Prime, and Gargoyle C. Comguards brought a Highlander, Longbow, Clint, Archer, Black Knight, and Marauder, pretty much all the clanbuster versions except the Highlander was the introtech one.

First few turns of the game were mostly jockeying for position, but I realized that even though I had better long range weapons, the ComGuards just had more raw firepower. I sent my Uller up along the runway to the side of the building, and the Comguards sent the Black Knight to intercept, but I used the Uller's speed to pull back and bring it in with the Gargoyle, leaving the Black Knight out of position. That was my big gambit and it paid off as I dived on the Highlander with everyone, eventually coring it with the Ultra 10 on the Uller. From then on it was a slugfest, and while I had less armor, the better weapons told over time. Very much a back and forth battle, though. My Gargoyle pilot took five(!) pilot hits in a single round and blacked out, then got his engine stomped on next turn, I cored the Highlander, my Summoner lost most of its weapons but stayed effective, and eventually the final result was me having a mostly intact Night Gyr and Uller, a crippled Summoner and Vulture, and an engine killed Gargoyle, while in the final turn the Comguards went from a Marauder, Black Knight, and Archer to only the Archer being alive.

Anonymous No.96856251 [Report]

The B packs a surprising punch, most of them do, but they compensate by not having either the armor or the speed to really stay alive. The Kit Fox is only good in a situation where there's a bigger mech the opponent is more scared of that has a lower TMM. So it pairs well with the many 5/8 heavies.

That’s pretty good for a first go at it. I’d say hit it with some edge highlights or maybe a little drybrush and you’d be good to go.

It’s kinda hard to see in this pic but I’d also recommend giving the cockpits a lot of attention, with a color that’s contrasting your base coat that much you’ll want to make sure the edges are crisp and you have a nice jeweling effect on there since the cockpit will naturally draw a lot of eyes and stand out a lot. On something like a king crab it can be hard with all the little windows, but on most mechs you’ll have enough space to work with.
Anonymous No.96857581 [Report]

>The quirks system needs to be more in depth! Give mechs unique buffs or nerfs that are tied to the mech itself.
I agree since since so many mech entries have the lore for the mechs be that they're supposed to be improved designs that are replacing old inferior designs but when you actually compare the tonnage and movement profiles there's little difference and you have to wonder why so much effort went into creating a whole new mech instead of just creating a different variant of an existing design. A more in depth quirk system would better represent the actual setting.
Anonymous No.96857589 [Report]

I like using quirks in a campaign because they make different chassis more distinct. That way even with customization every mech of same weight doesn't just end up becoming interchangeable, and gives the players a reason to try to acquire some mechs that have notably good traits.

On the Capellan Confedeation being the one Successor State to use most of the UrbanMechs that survived the 1st Star League's collapse, how exactly were the Capellans able to replenish any lost UrbanMechs whenever they lost worlds in combat? I mean, given that Orguss Industries was among the casualties of the Second Succession War (and that it was the Free Worlds League that annexed it) and that there wouldn't be another factory that built UrbanMechs in the Inner Sphere for almost another 173+ years (and in a system the Federated Suns annexed/"liberated" in between 2864 and 3010 no less since the aforementioned factory that built UrbanMechs for the FedSuns was Hanse Davion's idea), how would the Capellans replace lost UrbanMechs prior to them having their own factory for UrbanMechs (the Hellespont factory in Betelguese wouldn't be built until the late 3060s)?

Unless I misread it in my haste, ECM doesn't shut off C3 networks anymore. Now it only halves its effectiveness. (The only consolation is that the attacker needs to have LOS to make the shot, which was already an accepted house rule with pretty much everyone I've ever played with.)
My fellow MechWarrior buddy who hates C3 with a passion is going to be furious.

We can find the tonnage for any of them, but the small can be easily sandblasted (but can also just not be raised when sandblasty weapons are pointed at it), the medium reduces speed, and the large reduces speed and prevents jumps. Shields were always alright. You can't just slap a medium or large one on any unit, but the small shield can be added to almost anything and be worth its two tons. The only real problem with a small shield is if you've got guns spread out all across your mech and need to be able to fire all of them at once. If your weapons are crowded on one side, a small shield on the other is nothing but good.

Now to make it feel like it's flying without actually making LAM I need to jumping at least 10 (although I honestly want to go even faster, not that I'm expecting to get to 18), but I'm not sure if I should go 8/12/8[10] with regular jump jets or 5/8/8[10] with improved jump jets and at what tonnage, although I narrowed it down to a medium. Alright, here's my preliminary stab at a Lance + Shield Charger variant.
The obvious concept was a Solaris VII gladiator mech. I was tempted to go crazier with it using XXL engines, but decided to follow the KISS mantra to a degree.
Went with a medium shield so that it can still jump as one anon suggested. Debated on using IJJs, but seemed too heavy for what will be used for positioning rather than backstabbing.
Next I tried out a MASC + supercharger build, but I was running into issues arming it enough afterwards. I then took a step back and restarted with a TSM build instead, keeping the supercharger for the extra speed lost from the shield.
Went X-Pulse lasers because I felt it needed some experimental tech to be a proper Solaris mech. The math should work out with the two small lasers there in case you walk or (for whatever reason) stand still and want to keep your TSM bonus. Still, please vet it to make sure I didn't fuck up on accident.
Every single ranged weapon is in the right torso so the mech will be utterly screwed if it loses its side, but it's got an XL engine anyway so that's a given and it's a gimmick gladiator to boot. Seemed fine.
Went max armor since I imagine it's going to take a pounding drawing so much fire between its charges. I need to adjust the balance of the front/rear armor on the torso, but I figured I'd source input here first before I fiddle with it too much.
Lemme know what you dudes think.

Under the playtest rules, that thing does 72 damage + potentially 1 internal damage if the first location hit by the charge somehow still has armor by the time all 15 hits are resolved. It takes zero damage, but loses somewhere between 1 and 2 of its shields 18 DC. If that leaked change where the target hex also counts as a charge is in, then it goes up to 80.

Of course, realistically you're not getting a perfect 10 hex run up, so it's probably more like 32 to 40 damage +1 pierce check point, but that's still a lot of hurt.

When you attack it, you roll 2d6 against its toughness with a + for high damage, if you beat it, it dies. If you don't beat it, its toughness goes down by 1 and it lives.

We used the tanks for the Hinterlands campaign. It's an OK system, but there isn't any real reason to not use regular record sheets outside of the canpaign system. We ended up with games where a guy would pay BV for regular tanks with record sheets, but also get BSA tanks too, which really highlighted how pointless it was.

I mean spending BV on tanks doesn't make BSA tanks redundant, just that they spent to add to existing ground presence instead of saving it for fire support-- though it would be weird if two tanks on the board that are the same tanks used different rules.

How homogeneously japanese is the Draconis Combine? Do other cultures exist in it, or do people feel a big pressure to take up japanese names/customs?
Anonymous No.96863879 [Report]
>>96863785
Shiro Kurita really pushed the monoculture thing when he was founding the place, and one of his successors did the same thing after an incident where a weeaboo impulse saved him from an assassination attempt. Jackson Hayes 'forsook his African ancestry' and changed his name to Tetsuhara, founding the new family that gave us Best Afro-Samurai Minobu. Hohiro Kurita (Takashi's father) tried to force the entire Combine to adopt Japanese as their first language, even though it was massively impractical (and indeed contributed to justifying his assasssination). The Black Dragon Society would probably love to force the monoculture on everyone like Hohiro.

That said, the Azami Brotherhood have more or less retained ethno-religious autonomy within the Combine (under taqiya, they agreed to 'honor the Dragon' and publicly adopt the Dictum Honorium, as long as the ISF agreed not to look to closely at their actual internal cultural and religious practices). Even pre-independence, Rasalhague was very proud of its own culture (which often caused friction with the traditionalist Dracs). One of the 9th Ghost Regiment pilots who fought Colonel Camacho on Hachiman in "Hearts of Chaos" was named Tai-i Roger Hansen.
Anonymous No.96863891 [Report]
>>96863785
Other cultures exist (even aside from the very notable Azami), but there is a huge pressure to take up Japanese names and customs.

Dieron Prefecture, composed of former Hegemony worlds, is noted for being the least Japanese part of the Combine.

Obviously when Rasalhague was still part of the Combine, they maintained their own Scandinavian identity, but they also seem to have assimilated somewhat (or maybe that was just an externally imposed Japanese-speaking nobility?). Remember that the Rasalhagues were considered Draconian enough for Teddy to be engaged to a Rasalhague noblewoman.

In one of the novels, local Christians are observed celebrating Christmas openly.

Jews are also noted for maintaining their cultural traditions, even though they officially don't practice the Jewish religion (which is technically banned, as are most religions in the Combine aside from Buddhism and Shintoism).

The general impression is that you're supposed to adopt Japanese culture and traditions in order to get ahead, but the Combine isn't stupid enough to try and impose it by force on literally ever single person in the country.

Thanks for running the numbers.
I tried it out in a handful of MegaMek games which doesn't use the new playtest rules, but was still a lot of fun. I was reliably getting 32-48 damage charges which were fun, especially since the shield tended to eat most of the damage. I once set up a gnarly 64 points of damage in a charge that would've blown through another mech if I wasn't crashing into a fresh Colossus. Still did a LOT of damage without taking much in return. (Wish I took a screenshot in retrospect.)

I only ran into two problems:
1) Jumping could throw off my heat numbers to keep the optimal 9 heat for TSM.
2) I forgot to consider that you can't shoot at all when you charge so I'd zero out after crashing into someone. I don't know if there's any solution to this beyond asking your opponent if they're cool with you firing off the lasers blindly without any hopes of hitting them. Something tells me most people wouldn't be keen on it after seeing what damage numbers you're pulling.

Sometimes I'd forgo crashing into them in favor of getting up in their face and stabbing 'em with the lance for a whopping 32 damage followed by X-Pulses for extra damage.

Preliminary tests are looking good and, again, that's without the melee buffs. I think Jouster is a keeper.

I hear you. I like TSM for that sweet juicy double physical damage, but I was still hoping it'd be tweaked in the playtest. It's an unnecessarily fiddly math game if you want to optimize it.
The problem is I don't know how they could fix it without invalidating lots of old designs. (Maybe they'd be better off coming up with an Improved TSM in universe that new designs could use?)
That said, I came at my CGR-1S7 Jouster with a Solaris VII design perspective which means you gotta put in some goofy stuff.

Moving onto your build, this is a totally valid simple build. In fact, it could've been predecessor of my 1S7 or vice versa.
I couldn't resist tweaking it a bit however. I moved the ER Medium Lasers into the RT as (unless they update this in the playtest) you cannot hit someone with a melee weapon in an arm which you fired weapons from. This allows you to fire away and stab someone in the same time. I also threw in lovely delicious Endo-Steel making more room for 2 extra ER Medium Lasers. Alternatively you can swap one of them out for an extra DHS if you want to run things cooler. It should be easily managed however as long as you don't alpha strike and max jump repeatedly.
Hope you like it.

I'm part of a 2 mech half lance detachment, callsign Electric Goose. Normally tasked with tertiary objectives as part of bigger operations. Small raids, civilian relief, harassment, scouting and recon. That sort of thing.

Luther "Leopard" Reese (that's me), pilots a 3V Locust. Hell yeah.

I don't, but what happened was the primer went didn't cure for almost three months (every other primer I've used before or since cure overnight), then when it finally dried it was still super thick and turned a light tan, then eventually after sitting in a drawer for a few more months, it actually became the green it was supposed to be, but somehow looks thicker and is obscuring more details than it did when it was tan. Maybe it's fully cured by now, but I'm never going to use that primer again.

What’s fascinating to me about Vlasov is him being caught up between the ideological juggernauts and trying to negotiate a third way that he could rationalize as “truly” patriotic as opposed to being trivialized as a mere turncoat.
Maybe he could be CJF Star Colonel who leads a few Galaxies against the Third Star League?

ing a Vlasov-like character is to do it retroactively. This could help get the same sense of “what could have been” that thinking about Vlasov himself generates in the real world, and also (more importantly) the way that Vlasov can relativistically stand for (or against) any number of contrary political positions.
Let’s imagine that the usual depiction of Clan Smoke Jaguar in the Political Century and during the Clan Invasion has been hagiographically warped to emphasize that it was monolithically Crusader. But actually, there were internal dissenters all along the way who more or less kept their opinions to themselves given the momentum of CSJ and Crusader politics.
However, these dissenters became more disillusioned by Twycross, Wolcott, and especially Luthien. In the wake of Operation DRAGONSLAYER’s failure, the DCMS took a relatively high-ranking dissenter prisoner sparking an internal debate about whether, in light of the immense resources expended to defend Luthien, he could be used to demoralize the Clans generally and especially CSJ.
DCMS veterans of Wolcott and Luthien, impressed by Clan honor culture and recalling the truth about the Wolf’s Dragoons revealed the previous year at the Outreach Summit, even went so far as floating the idea of re-arming the CSJ POWs as a putative mercenary unit and turning them loose to fight against the Invasion. The ISF strongly objected, arguing that any similarities between Kuritan and Clan culture were purely superficial and that Clan internal politics were as of yet too obscure to form a secure basis for such a scheme.

Anonymous No.96870444 [Report] >>96870499 >>96871072

Nevertheless, the value of the Dragoons to House Davion was not lost on the Kuritans. The CSJ POWs were transferred to a relatively obscure location where their dissenting ideology might be developed for future use. The contemporaneous machinations of Ulric Kerensky and Anastasius Focht obviated the immediate usefulness of the project and DCMS leadership completely lost interest in the CSJ POWs after the Great Refusal. The entire project was summarily taken over by the ISF as a long-term investment. Outside of ISF documentation, the project no longer existed — and might as well have never existed.
The ISF informed the POWs of the apparent destruction of CSJ and that, in reality, their Clan secretly lived on in them. Over the course of the 31st century, these survivors were encouraged to preserve their Clanner ways as much as possible and the ISF systematically spied on them as a kind of “intelligence zoo” to better understand the Children of Kerensky. “Trials of Emancipation” were even regularly allowed (as single duels, always subtly rigged) to preserve the fighting spirit of the CSJ survivors as well as to provide the excuse to unleash them at the right moment should it ever come. Over the decades, the ISF also attempted to graft Kuritan cultural norms onto the survivors’ values with little internal agreement on its effectiveness.
Various regimes within the ISF had greater or lesser interest in this elaborate operation depending on the tides of galactic politics. Finally, in 3152, interest in the project exploded when Alaric Ward not only proclaimed the Third Star League but also, horrifically for the Combine’s leadership and populace alike, resurrected Clan Smoke Jaguar. It was finally time to activate this shadowy echo of the Wolf’s Dragoons, with hopes that they undermine Alaric’s claims and destroy the resurrected Jaguars.
