So what is Critical Role even about? I only ever hear people that it's a thing, but never what it is about. Like what are the campaigns themselves about? Where do they take place? Is it a generic fantasy universe? Matt Mercer's own creation? Does he fuge the rolls so his players always survive? Are there different players for each campaign? Do they have an impact on the world?

It's a show where actors pretend to play a game set in a world where traditionally monstrous races live among humans. Think Zootopia or Sesame Street, but with emotional scenes where the actors actually cry about dead NPCs that they never met outside of their back stories. Also they killed the gods because gods are racist against orcs

It started as "hey let's livestream our weekly session because it's covid and everything is shut down" but now it's scripted and the characters never actually risk death unless that death has been preplanned by mutual consent. Several players have been seen openly cheating (rolls) but it doesn't matter because they have to hit each character's various story arcs so you're really watching people pretending to play 5th edition

Campaigns 1-3 (DMed by Mercer) were high fantasy taking place in Mercer's own campaign setting, Exandria. Campaign 4 is DMed by BLM and is set in a different high fantasy setting, Araman. From what we know of it so far the main conceit is that the races of this world turned on and killed their Gods.

>does he fudge the rolls so the players always survive?
Not officially, but there is clearly scripting to some extent going on, more so as the series has gone on.

>are there different players for each campaign?
The Mercer-led campaigns are based around the same core cast of 7 players with occasional guests, Campaign 4 has 13 players total who are splitting into 3 different tables, the campaign will follow different arcs with each table and presumably they will from time to time come together and switch up the line-ups.

>do they have an impact on the world?
Typically yes, the characters generally end up attaining high levels of power and influence, taking on world-ending threats etc. In campaign 4 the PCs look set to play a major role in a conflict between noble houses trying to fill the power vacuum left in the wake of the dead gods.

It's in everything he does. I didn't start watching him closer until I realized he was constantly fudging rolls and cheating abilities/spells. With Picrel same as >>>96886800, it's the same move (left) and clearly not a genuine reaction, or he forces physical scenes (right) to fondle her where she has to play along. I only remember a few times touching Marisha as being aggressive, like when he literally wiped her face with his hand like he was putting shit on her. So about those defending him...

On a side note, the physically touching is just another example of how Critical Role is completely clueless as to what role-play is. They still think it's performing a stage play. That's why they script PC arcs, the campaign outcomes/encounters are predetermined, and they cheat so much. They see everything as needing to create third-person scenes for an audience, rather than playing an honest game. They don't have the ability to inhabit a character where have little control over the result.

Believe it or not, but his campaigns with Itmejp were so much more interesting than the old Rollplay they did with Koibu (who I still watch, so I know exactly what kind of DMs they are). He looks like the most obnoxious SJW you can imagine, but he is actually more respectful than Koibu, when it comes to inserting his magical realm stuff into his game. And he is also much more knowledgeable about mythology and history.

I really hoped that Adam Koebel would become a right-wing grifter for his comeback, call everyone who was offended a weak pussy, who ruined his life over literally nothing and restart his career.

After four episodes, pretty much. I'm actually getting a War of Souls vibe from Dragonlance. The dead are restless, ghosts everywhere, gods are gone, magic has changed and old rule has been upended by revolutions.

Just look at campaign 3. The continent of Marquet was set up in previous campaigns as fantasy arabia which is a cool as fuck setting. In campaign 3 it was once again another generic as fuck fantasy Portland with no ethnic or cultural identity of its own.

On the bad player behaviour side of things, Matt is actually quite a shit GM when it comes to reigning in his players and how his NPCs interact with them. They constantly treat the PCs as the centre of the universe and if one even provides a minor inconvenience they act like sociopaths towards that NPC and Matt never questions or punishes them for it.

The anti-god storyline of campaign 3 as a whole was fucking awful and provided no interesting conversation at all about them. The PCs just decided to be anti-god on a whim, even jumping to raiding a temple and murdering priests with zero consequences at all. A massive self report on their real life views on religion.

At the end Matt played the gods like cucks because he himself cannot bring forth any kind of authority in his GMing.

They freed the elemental, which I assume caused the city's sewage to back up. It didn't occur to them that there might be consequences, or that Liam's character had an enslaved fey as a familiar
>Matt never questions or punishes them for it
He leans into it. However the players perceive the world and its inhabitants, that's how they become. Jester's mother was a horrible parent. She was an agoraphobic prostitute who kept her daughter locked up until adulthood, and so her personality was that of a permanent child. But a child with a penchant for drawing penises on everything, which hints at what she was exposed to growing up by her whore of a mother. But because everyone acted like the sun shone out of her arse, Matt retconned her into this kind, loving mother

The majority of Critical Role's "roleplaying" is just playing as cautiously as possible to protect their precious original characters at all costs... and then to act like suicidal retards whenever they think they're in a "safe" RP setting.
>Let's spend 2 hours talking in circles to construct the perfect plan...
>Oh, what's that, a shiny object radiating an aura of death has been brought into the room? My character does a backflip onto it, trying to break their neck as hard as possible!

My favorite moment playing 5e came from actually roleplaying as my character, even when doing so was objectively deranged.

Assuming you are talking about the first setting Exandria. To be honest its sort of just another "close to generic fantasy, but here's the slight TWIST!" setting anyone could make. The races all more or less get along, only exception is that Fantasy Empire #12 is at war with basically Mordoor but the monster people aren't all chaotic evil, which could be interesting I guess if you lean heavily into one side and build up all the propaganda for your players, then show them that they are people. It uses the Dawn War pantheon which I hold as a top tier out the box pantheon. None of the races really have fun homebrew lore for their origins or anything, the world mostly blends together in a generic fantasy bowl of gruel. Also LGBT stuff is basically accepted everywhere, which for half this board is an automatic deal breaker.

Obviously you could reach different conclusions, but I would say that there are other settings that would be more interesting to run a game in. Greyhawk is good, Mystara could be fun to whip out, and there are always the weirder less mentioned parts of Faerun you could run a game in. The shit that hasn't been touched since long before 5e. Nentir Vale is also dope.

The oni Lorenzo (where Taliesin had his character get killed) kidnapped Jester, Fjord, and Yasha. When they were finally found they never spoke about what happened. Lorenzo and gang were supposed to be Evil so...
As for Liam, his first PC kept making creepy incest comments to his sister, which she wasn't happy with. Caleb, his second one had some rooms he wouldn't let anyone see in his magical mansion. That, combined with his creepiness toward Jester and his admitted evil backstory, gave serious rapey vibes. His third Orym (who was claiming to be gay) was always tying to "sleep" in Ashley's character's crotch. His PCs always do the same sad act too to con the party. This one also gives the same vibes that something very twisted is in there just waiting to strike.

Most of it is performative/fake laughing too and way over the top. Most never forget they always have the camera is on them. I think they even have a monitor to see themselves. Instead of this interweaving party mess, they should've had 2 entirely separate campaigns adding Liam and Taliesin to Mulligan's shows people, and one adding Robbie to the remaining CR original cast.

Basically what the other anon said - if you or your players don't already have a connection to Crit Role, then there isn't really a point in running a game in Exandria. It's just a generic flavor of fantasy. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing that will stand out versus Faerun or any other fantasy setting you can come up with. Without the "oooooh I know this from CR" connection there is no purpose to doing it

So one table is people with day jobs, confined to one city who melodramatically whisper until the DM forces them to advance the plot and the other table is an actual adventuring party exploring the world.
