Spider-Man shifted gears from an Assassin's Creed-style set to a bigger set midway through and also seemed to focus on all the wrong parts of Spider-Man (New York isn't NOT important but it's not central, Spider-Verse stuff felt oversaturated, etc). It also arguably had to cover more ground and so couldn't do enough compared to ATLA which has a lot smaller of a scope to cover. Super Heroes will be the real test for Marvel stuff I think, anyway.

I think we're seeing the consequence of two things here. Spider-Man clearly being planned as a small beginner set that was stretched to fill a full set and Spider-Man trying to cover every Spider-Man thing possible. Had they focused on just a shorter Spider-Man story it may have worked out better. Or at the very least cut the multiverse shit. Avatar is the one story and characters which is clearly turning out a lot easier to adapt.

It was meant to be an aftermath booster, and then, in rare form, the community told them that they weren't buying packs with one-third the cards for the same price, so they massively backpeddled on aftermath shit (instead of simply making a pack with one-third the cards cost one-third as much, as would be fucking obvious to anybody) and have tried to retrofit a real set onto what was never supposed to be more than a set of like, 70 cards or some shit. So they had to fill out 100 more spaces worth of draft chaff (on top of the roughly 90% of any given set that is already draft chaff, of course) The result is a set that has absolutely no fucking love put into it, because it was done hastily, and with pettiness in mind.

I think Spider-Man HAD to cover a wider variety to make the set 'work' but it also didn't focus what it covered all that much, except Spider-Verse-related stuff because the movies were popular, except they didn't have the rights to the movies, they had the rights to the comics, so you get weird shit like Miles/Gwen getting teased romantically even though the comics did that a bit and went "wait Gwen is so much older than Miles this is weird" and dropped it, and characters who've had a single-digit number of comic appearances showing up in the set, like Spider-Byte.
It also doesn't help that Spider-Man's extended cast are so much Spider-People themselves. Comparatively, Batman for example doesn't have everybody around him just being Batman or Batwoman, though there's a lot of that still.

I went back and looked at Eldritch Moon a few days ago out of nostalgia. There were ten Legendary permanents in the entire set. 2 Planeswalkers, 6 Creatures, an Enchantment, and a Land. That's it.

They're trying to chase the hype and go multiverse shit which just so happens also gives them all the names and bulk cards they could want to fill out the set they were forced to fill out. It sounds good on paper. But I think for the cohesiveness of the set it would have been better if it was focused in a lot more. Just tell something more iconic from Spider-Man. Tell the Rami movies if they need an outline the mainstream would know. Something that feels more focused i think would have helped a lot. Both for player feel and card design space. They can still have a bunch of Spider-Man, just have it be different points in the one's life and in the story. Having to stretch even farther to fit all these spider people and villains and totems and nonsense clearly didn't work out.

And ACR was forgettable because it was based on a boring property. SPM has a clear reason for being not great with the midway shift. TMNT will be the test of if smaller sets like that work I guess.

Child of Alara counts, but both it and Progenitus are manifestations of the worldsoul of Alara. Many, many, MANY worldsoul avatars are not 5c, are not even multicolored!. The Souls cycle from M15 are all monocolored, Nissa's whole thing was speaking to the Worldsoul of Zendikar (Nissa, WorldWAKER) and that turned out to be Ashaya - monocolored again. Kyodai (the Soul of Kamigawa) has a 5c color identity, but is still just monoW. But lots and lots of worldsouls have been encountered by the Jacestice League and almost none of them have been multicolored, let alone 5c. Even going deeper back into MTG lore, we never saw worldsouls as being inherently 5c. Gaea, you know from Gaea's Cradle and shit? That's Dominaria's world soul, and that bitch is MonoG!
