I've been about this effect since the first one was revealed. I think with the incoming 2026 gigastandard with roughly legal cards (holy fuck) it's probably a good thing to have powerful effects with that specific drawback, just so that decks aren't entirely made up of Shocks, starting towns, multiversal passages, cavern of souls'es and so on.
the most common build of 4c control runs literally one basic land (a plains), and the mana base is only going to get stronger next year with the rollout of the last five Shocks and whatever else gets released in '26. it just feels wrong to me to have land bases like that in Standard somehow.

Use case for this card being banned? It says right on the card to remove it from your deck if you're not playing for ante. No games are for ante anymore so the card itself bans itself.

There might have been some tech by filling your deck with ante cards when you enter your deck list for a tournament, and then taking them out before actually playing. A blanket ban is just easier for everyone.

Standard is really bad for new players to get into the game with.
Next year there will be almost 20 sets in Standard. A new set comes out every 2 months and has 1-2 new mechanics. This shit is exhausting.
I don't think Magic gets new players unless it's some entrenched player introducing the game to his kids.

I fail to see how it is bad. MTG since 2018-2019 has had plenty of broken cards being released annually. The first few years they banned the troublesome cards but after 2023 they just stopped banning things. And I m not saying things in eternal format but instead things in the flagship format (Standard).
Before if a deck was close to 40% of the meta (and winning tournaments) they would look around and ban something from it to make the other decks able to compete.
Standard right now is so miserable that people are going to commander and modern...

They don't even need to do that, though.
Foundations + 1 set has 777 cards which is more than any 3-set block had. That would be a fine format for small events with LGS prize support. Shit, MTGO had Block dailies even at the start of blocks at which point they only had a single set released.
Even if we jettison FDN from the equation, today's sets have about the necessary amount of playable rares and power level (FIRE design!!) so as to rival entire old blocks, maybe excepting Spider-Man which was an obvious fuckup in that respect. It's no longer the case that sets are released with the expectation of fully exploring their themes and mechanics in layer, connected sets, so they should all be able to stand alone, theoretically.

I know I'm talking into the wind here and nobody at WotC is reading /tg/ for ideas. But it just seems really important to me to have a functional on-ramp. The gulf between the lowest buy-in (which is draft/pre-release sealed) and the very next step up the competitive chain (which today is Standard) has never been wider. Like if you played at your LGS every single week for EoE, then you probably opened about one booster box's worth of cards, right? And, not kidding, by the math, you probably would have opened like 0-2 Standard playable spells in all of those packs, plus some Shocklands. The card collection aspect could be so much more enticing than it currently is.

So i got back into collecting mtg in a very fun and casual way, i view it as a lotto ticket i can keep, around foundations. So i generally buy like 5 boosters of each set if i can given availabilty or spare money im willing waste on cards. Ive had a wide variety of sets to try, bloomburrow was dope af and final fantasy was a bit of a letdown and aetherdrift was just meh, but these spiderman cards just fucking suck dick. Ugly art thats too dark or weird looking, goofy web slinging, lack of any recognizable supporting cast or villians that a comic fan would enjoy etc etc i mean aetherdrift was odd but it had decent art that was clear and easy to understand even if i thought the sets theme was dumb. Id say i enjoyed house of duskmourn more than spiderman and that set wasnt that great. Idk, youd think hasbro and wotc would atleast have decent spiderman art, not some muddy out of focus slop like they released. Im skipping the universe beyond stuff moving forward, ill come back once we get a WWE ub set or something equally retarded.

The more I play with it, the more I have grown to appreciate just how FUCKING BROKEN AS SHIT this card is. It has kept up with power creep, and I think it is one of the most overwhelmingly broken cards ever printed.

It does suck in high numbers though, so typically you can only run it as a 1-of. Still, when you play it, often times the game is just over. You get a new full grip, their hand gets shredded to 1 or 0 cards and you get tons of free life total pressure.

I think this is a forgotten card that more people should include in lists....... if Golgari lists existed anywhere in any format lmao....
