/cg/ - Customs General - July to me
What’s on the workbench, /toy/?

Sculpts, castings, original plushies, 3D prints, dioramas, mods, kitbashes, and repaints are all welcome!

Post WIPs, finished projects, ideas, techniques, ask for advice, and most of all, have fun!

HELPFUL TIPS:
-Invest in a rotary tool such as a dremel for sanding/sculpting, especially a flexible extension tip.
-Pin vises for drilling holes can be found at hobby stores like Hobby Lobby and are great for making peg holes.
-For soft, flexible parts get Sugru silicone putty and Oyumaru
-Hardware epoxy putties such as Waterweld, KwikWood, and PlasticWeld are similar to milliput, greenstuff, and apoxie, can be cheaper some times, and can be found at local hardware stores such as Lowes, Ace, and Home Depot.
-Bootleg figures make great custom-fodder, especially if the legit figures are pricey.
-Body-chan/kun, Figma Archetype He/She, and Sozai-chan/kun are great base bodies for import-style human characters.

-For 3D models to use for editing, the following sites are good to bookmark:

>cgtrader.com (free and purchasable models)
>cults3d.com (free and purchasable models)
>models-resource.com (FREE 3D game models)
>turbosquid.com (free and purchasable models)
>grabcad.com (free and purchasable models)
>renderhub.com (free and purchasable models)

I hope you're liking this new style of OP Banner, i'll upload a base so you can make your own version if i'm not available

::3D Printable Sexy Petite Ninja::

https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/pm-afg-clothing-set-sexy-ninja

(download includes)

-complete figure
-four heads (masked blank, masked sculpted eyes, unmasked blank, unmasked sculpted eyes)
-four sets of hands (gripping, open, peace, and ninjutsu hand pose)
-articulated fabric flaps (ball-hinge)
-updated articulation and layouts of the legs and arms (blank petite figure has this new layout too, just without sculpted clothing)
-fully assembled STL file of the figure for users to customize themselves if they want.

The figure has not been printed yet but test-prints of the new limb joints in SLS PA11 foodsafe nylon were successful. I do plan to do a test-print of the full ninja figure in the near future.

Next clothed-figure I work on might be a ninja version of my BBW figure, based on a certain chubby-ninja hentai manga by Kojima Video.

How would you do something like those sewage pipes I think glueing wouldn't work on something so thin. My best guess would be to just push it into xps foam. So basicly finish the wall, paint the pipe, let everything dry and then push the pipe into the wall?
Anonymous No.11503100 [Report]

I would get 2cm thick XPS. During scultping would press the pipes to make marks, then cut them out, place the pipes and fill the gaps with modpodge mixed with filler.

This kind of makes me wonder, is the Ramen Toy diorama a waste of money? I was really excited about it but part of me is starting to wonder if I'd be better off scratch building my display environments. Ramen's looks good enough and has a lot of versatility but the one you posted has tons of personality and is very clearly a TMNT inspired sewer with the green sludge. I feel torn.

I feel like if you buy a big bucket of pretzel bites or chocolate-covered almonds or somesuch from costco, and slice the cap of the container up into strips, you could heat-gun those into little flat golden curls that hold their shape. no promises but that's what feels right in my mind's.. fingers. How hard would you say is it to make something like this with no talent for art and crafts whatsoever?
I thought about
>using two xps foam plates one for the floor and one as background
>Prime it all black with (black acrylic paint + white glue)
>put another layer of pure black paint over it
The floor would be easy because it looks like it's just same sized squares so I can just use a ruler.
>Use a ruler + pen to pre draw the squares and use some blue neon paint to finish it.
The background gives me the biggest trouble because I have zero talent and I can neither draw a straight line nor a circle. But I think it would be easy if I just use a pair of compasses, right? If that would work I can use the ruler again to make the horizontal lines and paint it all with neon green.

1.Do you think it would work like this or am I missing something?
2.Would it be better to leave the bottom of the background black or pull the lines through? I think leaving it black would make it look more 3dish because I'm not really using any kind of deepth for the floor?
3.Does the coloring work like I'm imagine it or is the black paint to dark for the neon colors to pop and I should prime white, make the necessary lines and then paint it?
4. What are some good neon colors that work without black light? Preferable in small packaging? I don't need the 500ml bottles.
5.Did I overlook something?

Thank you in advance.

a ruler is indeed your friend. First to mark off evenly spaced lines, then to guide the paintbrush (though really you should probably mask it off, especially if your tape was just the right width)
What do you mean by 'pull the lines through' ? personally what I'd do here is start with a piece that transmits light well, mask the lines before adding the black and/or cut out the lines later, then put LEDs under it to get the glow.
for paint you'll want to look for something that says fluorescent or 'uv-reactive' but beyond that, uhh let me check for you.. Golden brand. Golden has never let me down, but i've only used their green.
Anonymous No.11512746 [Report]
>>11512148
anon you got this, just know that the more time you spend on it, the better itll look.
The only hard part is getting the curves of the lines correct. You can always draw on the foam before you commit to painting it.
I would suggest masking and spray painting though for a clean painted look, you arent going to get a sharp clean line with brush strokes.
It doesnt need to be neon colors either, prime black and use blue and green.

That being said, if your 100% sure you arent cutout for painting and crafting, then just make a photoshop file of the green and blue backgrounds separately and get them professionally printed somewhere and just glue them into the board.

>What do you mean by 'pull the lines through' ?
you see on the left image the green lines go from top to the bottom but on the right there is a wide black space between the end of the green lines and the floor.
>LEDs
While I do think this would look better it's also a step I'm not willing to go.
>for paint you'll want to look for something that says fluorescent or 'uv-reactive' but beyond that, uhh let me check for you.. Golden brand. Golden has never let me down, but i've only used their green.
Does this work on black primer
>a ruler is indeed your friend. First to mark off evenly spaced lines, then to guide the paintbrush (though really you should probably mask it off, especially if your tape was just the right width)
Any idea on how to make the green lines? Maybe my eyes play a trick on me but those aren't straight lines right?

Do you specifically need the surface to be flat? The easiest way to accomplish the curved lines to me seems to make a straight grid and then just bend the surface. It would then look like that in perspective. The green grid in that screenshot seems to represent some kind of dome.

For the glowiness, I was reminded of how in Escape from New York they used thin retroreflective tape on pitch black models then shone a light on it to create that glowy vector graphics look without using computers. But I'm not sure how feasible this is for a DIY project.

Not really but I already have XPS foam so I thought I could use that
The easiest way to accomplish the curved lines to me seems to make a straight grid and then just bend the surface.
What material would you use for this? oh wait than I would also need to cut the foam for the floor, which would make the stage a lot smaller.

To think that I thought that this would be an easy stage to build...
Anonymous No.11512787 [Report] >>11512857

to me, the background looks like a dome. You can see how the floor is circular. I think the logical thing would be to make a circular floor and a hemi-spherical background. then masking and painting will still be easy, straight lines.
Anonymous No.11512857 [Report]
>>11512787
it IS a dome in game, but i dont expect him to replicate this in real life, DESU just printing it out with the curved lines would be the easiest way to get this effect.

If your in the market, the only feature i can recommend is a large build plate. The largest you can afford. Its the ONLY thing that matters. Its the only limiting factor. every resin printer can print anything, you can adjust every setting, but the size of the build plate can never change.

indeed, but the guy should know what he's getting into
one requires either tons of sanding or.. someday the tech improving until it can get 'higher resolution' prints as it were, but it's quick and simple.
the other requires ventilation, washing, temperature control, light control... it's a rigamarole, but with it, you can make basically anything. there are resins in every type of material you could want, even ones impregnated with metal.

But I really don't have much experience in any of this physical crafting stuff besides flatland drawing and painting. Custom MvC2 Blackheart using the BAF head, movie venom body, masterverse Skeletor feet (two pairs because I had to add the heel claw) and a rubber rat tail.

fantastic! That movie venom body really does seem to be pretty damn good.
Run into anything hard vis-a-vis neck pegs etc?

Just needed to swap the double ball joint our for a different, longer one. The head fits on as is but it's really low on the shoulders. I just found one that was a few cm longer shaft.

Update with the new articulated tail! Thanks tailanon for the suggestion to make it bigger and better!

With all the effort you went through adding little details like the feet, the thin-ass tail was the one thing that really stuck out like a sore thumb. Good stuff.

I'm sorry, I got lazy. It was glued on the figure 2 years ago when I first started working on that body and I just left it on even though I had better tails like the bendy Spawn demons. A third party is super helpful with critiques because when you stare at a custom for so long you get that "wedding dress blindness" where it just looks the same all over.

But what I need to do is take a break for a day and do something else and then come back and look at the figure again and match it up with the source material.

I guess this is the finished version until I can find some cool electrical dark lightning energy effects or some HP/HK demons.

Nah I get ya. It's why I leave alone some customs I've been working on for a while to take a step back and come back to it with fresh eyes. It helps to keep things in perspective so I'm not just compromising when it's something that I can fix when I'm well-rested.

and the, er, belt? I assume that wasn't on Johnny to begin with. I'm actually curious to see this Torch figure now, because apparently the yellow flame parts are not connected

The belt was made from Halo brute armor, the orange flames on his arms were just shaved off. Not too hard to sand the forearms back to round.

Custom RE figures starting to get closer to the “complete” side of things. Really wanna focus on army building zombies and start on the STARS team. Any recommendations on a good body for an RE1 Jill and RE4 Saddler/Salazar?

pic related. It's been a pegwarmer for a few years now. You can still get them pretty cheap. Speaking of shelf warmers, has anyone thought of a good use for the Eternals figures? Across all of the disney blockbuster failure lines Eternals continues to be the one I cant come up with a good use for.

With the lightyear figures you could make anything from Mazinger Z to various Space Marines. With Shang Chi, Wakanda Forever, etc you can pretty easily repurpose them into GI Joe/fantasy characters or other capeshitters. But the eternals are so distinctly bland that besides pilfering them for parts I cant think of any good way to put them to use.

does it have some explanation behind it?
>>11525744
ah thank you, i was curious.
that's an unusual desin for sure, with the flames only on the head and hands/forearms.. so I guess the customizer had to remove those black lines. though nothing is going to fix the huge trapezius area, figures have never really figured out what to do with that, have they.
Anonymous No.11526001 [Report] >>11526014
>>11525936
The anon that made it simply had a revoltech Mr Incredible and sought to modify it into a Spumco styled Space Adventure Cobra figure.

As for torch all the lines were deco'ed on. Thats easilly removed with just some rubbing alcohol. The proportions look odd because of how small the standard head is. That body was mostly used for Spidermen, who on average, feature larger heads.

It's not all that noticeable unless you really fixate on it. It works for what it is.
Anonymous No.11526014 [Report]
>>11526001
ahhhh yeah, that makes sense.
It seems to me like, in addition to the butterfly joint, they should have the whole thing attached to hinges that form the trapezius, so that can swing out and lift.
