I don't have to cope with that because I'm not ashamed of buying the toys I like. I have friends and family who venture into my basement where I display my toys whenever they visit to see what is new. It helps that I don't collect slutty anime girls. In general, people don't tend to care about what strangers buy except for pathetic people with shittier lives than yours.

Toy collecting will NEVER be a serious hobby. All those news articles about being a kidult collecting labubus or legos won't change anything. You may need a reason, but you'll never have an excuse. You collect because you want to

the world is in total disarray as it is. if the hobby brings you peace, and you're causing no trouble to yourself or others, you have nothing to be ashamed of.Boomers collected stamps, toy trains, cars, and comic books. How are muscly plastic action men any different?

First you have to accept some things. Collecting toys is mindless consumerism. It doesn't take any skill or resourcefulness to find a figure on ebay and put it on a shelf. It barely counts as a hobby. Nobody is interested in the deep lore of Bionicle so it isn't a socially viable interest either. Once you accept that's how normies view collecting toys and it will never, ever change, you can start figuring out your personal coping methods.

Don't know if you've been paying attention to the YouTube scene, but toy collecting? It's hard work. It takes skill to know what to find down at a garage sale or flea market. You gotta be kicking a ton of ass to correctly identify those big ticket items for an easy pay day. Toy Hunting is serious business in this day and age.

I had this exact same question but one day I had a conversation that blew my mind. I sat down on a bench outside of a Target waiting for my Lyft driver, next to me was an old woman eating a sandwich. Not sure how or why we began to talk but we had a pretty lively Convo about Legos. She talked about how much she loved collecting them and sharing her hobbies with her grandkids.
She may not have realized it, but she gave me a whole new perspective in life. It IS possible to be a responsible adult AND still be able to enjoy what it is typically seen as "for kids". The trick I think is to come up with a healthy balance between the "kid stuff" and your responsibilities.

It actually is. That's where you get the "no smiles and happiness allowed" serious collectors like that not-a-Frenchman and his anal-guy, and the "toy investors" who are nothing short of fucking pricks with the way they do the whole market just to make a buck.

The serious ones are the ones who suck the fun out of a hobby, and every hobby has that one group of elitist pricks who think they're better than you because they have more. If there's a community of dildo-collectors out there, then there's one guy who says "I HAVE A DILDO THAT WAS SIGNED BY GEORGE TAKEI OF STAR TREK AFTER HE USED IT ON HIS BUTT, AND I GOT TO MEET HIM AND YOU DIDN'T BECAUSE YOU'RE POOR AND A LESSER COLLECTOR THAN I." There's always that one fucking guy, and he's always surrounded by minions who think his "coolness" rubs off on them by licking his boots. I've seen it in coin collecting, watch-collecting, porcelain-collecting, car-collecting, and all sorts of other collecting circles.

I think of "toys" as "art"

--they are tiny sculptures
--the packaging has artwork all over it
--the package itself is sometimes artful
--they exist from artful things like shows, movies, or some other media. and even original things outside of that is created by an artist of some kind

browsing the toy aisle is somewhat like looking through an art gallery. a lot of talented artists did a lot of work to everything there.

and for a few measly bucks you can take it home with you? what a deal!

That was the state of mind for a massive number of adult collectors in the 90s, and companies like McFarlane, Dragon Toys, BBI, and Medicom made a fortune off of them by escalating the level of detail and quality of the toy sculpts.

>>11550967
I like attractive female figures for the aesthetics. I don't think it's gay or perverted at all. It can be a fully-clothed figure like Edea from Final Fantasy VIII, or a barely-clothed figure like a few classic McFarlanes. A few male figures can be aesthetically pleasing too when done right.

For me the way to get over any shame/guilt related to wasting money on toy collecting is to make it more of an active hobby and less of an exercise in expensive hording. I love vintage toys, especially lines that have interesting engineering and stylistic designs but its hard to justify the ongoing cost when this shit literally just sits in a cabinet for me to admire. About 3 years ago I started selling off my old card collections and started buying up large/complete vintage toy collections for a discount; cleaning them down, matching accessories, took decent photos of them and started selling them individually online and at collector markets. At the same time I would cherry pick nice pieces for my own collection. This has been self sustaining or profitable ever since while also being quite fun to do (mostly).

I think as long as you're doing something creative or profitable with your hobby you wont experience the retrospective regret and shame of wasting money on it. People will also have some respect for it (if you really care about that).

>It doesn't take any skill or resourcefulness to find a figure on ebay and put it on a shelf.
Actually, that depends on what you are collecting. Even the time to learn about figures in a line can take quite a bit of research. It isn't hard, just time consuming sometimes. Sometimes toy lines are easy peasy to look up. Other times you have to really dig. There are some which are stupid obscure and hard to find any info. on. Again, not a difficult endeavor, but its not like people go 'I want a Darth Vader figure', search 'Darth Vader' on ebay, and then mindlessly buy the first one they see. On the other hand, its not like as in depth as other hobbies, like fixing up old cars.
