Because it's way easier to design given his shape and transformation. Also Megatron can't be a gun anymore and the next thing it could be, a tank, is something Lego doesn't want to make either so they don't know what the fuck to do with the character.

picked up the Ollie's special this week. Quick reviews:

Core class freezer: decent little bugger, ball joints love to pop free and he's kinda lose but pretty cool gun mode and terrifying robot mode.

Core class Ironhide (86): better than the Voyager. Fun to fiddle with. My favorite out of the haul easily.

Core class Arcee (rotb): Cute. Transformation is neat and it looks better than the mainline deluxe in terms of paint (but I prefer the mainline deluxe's wheel management)

Deluxe Legacy Strongarm: possibly the worst figure in my collection, robot mode is ehhh and transformation is a bit too fiddly even for me. Vehicle mode is the highlight, very delightfully wide micromaster monster truck.

We can definitely add Sureshot to the ever-growing list of "mogged by G1". Look at how much cleaner and better-proportioned this is. This looks like a cool toy I'd actually want to play with on its own, and not just a heap of robot limbs with wheels and a cockpit facade on top.

one detail I always liked on the original was how the fists retracted into the forearms and looked like intake vents behind the cockpit. On the new figure, they're just part of the ugly, indiscernible mass of red that makes up 80% of the toy for some reason.

Right, that under-spoiler bit should yellow.
Nevertheless though, I mean, of course there's gonna be more part seperation lines, the figure's actually poseable this time - that's kind of expected.
There is a bit of lil vent/stripe lines molded in for greebling as you call it, but it seems very minimal to me, especially by direct comparison to most other G1 TFs made today - and the original itself had a few of those stripe detailings strewn about itself, also in its stickers, so I don't see what's wrong with the new one trying to evoke the stickers in a subtle way.

Devastator is an extremely mixed bag, leaning towards bad. My biggest gripe is the off-center knees. It just looks terrible and Im going to have order a Chinese parts kit to fix that. Hook is the crux to having fun assembling the full gestalt. Hes wonky and a lot of the process feels sketchy. Everyone keeps claiming this set is so β€œsolid” compared to the CW and he is, but not entirely so. There are a few pieces that like to keep coming apart, the worst offender being Scrapper. He is not quite stable enough and the shovel assembly tends to collapse under moderate pressure. Mixmaster’s combined mode ankle ratchet is much nicer than Scrappers that feels like it wants to explode. The ankle pivots are at totally different heights and thats kind of weird. He reminds me a bit of Raiden with his lopsided feet. Also the knee ratchets are squeaky and kind of feel like theyre chewing themselves a bit. Finally the Bonecrusher shoulder is way jankier thank Scavenger. Mixmaster and Scavenger feel slightly more refined than the rest of the crew but not by much. Although Scavenger dosent tab into Long Haul properly on all copies but it is very inconsequential.

Overall not extremely impressed but whats new.

Also, taking it from that angle so we can't see the roof or hood and that close so the front details are all blurred really doesn't help with the identification. Just got my KSI Widowmaker in and...is it just me, or does she seem to be at least loosely based off of Crystal Widow? Even with the concept art, she has a very similar head to Crystal Widow/BM Blackarachnia (minus the extra eyes), she's orange, at least one of the earlier concept arts uses a very similar-looking torso, and she was apparently supposed to have retractable wrist blades that mimic the big stabby middle finger claws on CW and BA.
Either way, the toy's not bad, though I would have preferred they based it off of one of the slimmer concept arts; having weapon storage in both modes is always a plus, and her car mode is pretty nice.

honestly I'd have passed on the zoids crossover if I hadn't gotten in on a group-buy from a guy who knows a guy. and even then, YEESH. it is objectively not worth more than 130 bucks or so. especially with the liger's legs looking kinda weird, the hip armor not sitting right for my taste, and the robot mode not being the most proportional thing ever made.. plus it's at a confused scale because it's mixing zoids and diaclone. buuuuut i want it i want it i want it i want it
i will not be able to afford any future crossovers, but I'll look at them fondly at a distance.

a diaclone zoids crossover would be interesting, but I feel like diaclone is the weakest link in the crossover.. all it does is change the scale so it no longer makes sense (they clearly wouldn't be able to do this for any smaller zoid, or the 1/60 scale pilot wouldn't fit), and add in a bunch of little mini vehicle dealies and opening doors.
the transformers x zoids part is what's so cool. I've wanted a transforming liger for 26 years. it's downright surreal to actually get one. even if it does mostly just stand up to transform.

Bad- the only bad thing I would say is that it’s a little lighter than I was expecting. Like it feels the same weight as the original toy despite it being twice as big.

And yeah, I went with G2 version because getting the others in the G2 colors will be easier and also I’m sure all the kinks and production issues on the first release ones have been ironed out.

like, do a movie where optimus, bumblebee, and whomever else you are CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED to bring along... are taking a space trip because they received a signal... and there, megatron and starscream and whoever is contractually obligated from them, is there doing something sinister and weird. Freeing an ancient trapped nasty bunch of WEIRD transformers, attempting to unlock a tech thingy similar to a 'dark allspark' that gives them crazy powered up abilities but it also goes wrong, or just having to go on an adventure in a weird, creative, alien landscape to find a macguffin. something. I don't agree with this mentality. Cullen has one of the most iconic voices of all time, but I kind of hate that he's been locked into being the only voice of the character since the Bay movies. Peter Cullen and Frank Welker are amazing as many different versions of Optimus and Megatron, but we never would have got the equally amazing performances of Garry Chalk Optimus and David Kaye Megatron if only the original VAs were allowed to do those roles.

That said, I think they absolutely should have got Chalk for Primal, but I also think RotB's take on the BW characters is kind of shit, so it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway.

There's nothing wrong with kibble, and adding articulation doesn't have to ugly up an alt mode. Very weird things to assert when basic logic will tell you neither are true.

The Missing Link line is proving how easy it is to make a fun, good-looking transforming robot toy, by literally taking 40-year-old designs and just adding articulation. Some of you guys treat Transformer engineering as though it's alchemy, when really the only secret is to put the alt mode first and let everything else fall in to place.

His figure with grimlock sucks, even though the 'g2' color scheme fucks.

My bigger issue with that figure are the grey biceps and hands, as well as the black hips. Hips and hands can be swapped with Shrapnel easily enough to be the proper colors, but the biceps are pinned, and none of my efforts to get the pins out worked. Even if I could, that would result in a Shrapnel with grey biceps and hands which should be purple.

I got a pin punch recently which I used to fix SS86 Prime's heels as well as the Bonecrusher misassembly, but didn't think to try it on the Insecticons. Not sure if it would work because it's a different type of pin, having a large flat end on one side. I might give it a shot now that I can just buy these new ones if I fuck them up. It's dumb that this is even an issue in the first place. All because Hasbro is incompetent when laying out their molds.

You DO understand the whole point of Missing Link, right? The legs are hollow because they're a mass of folding panels (the truck bed folds up, the truck rear doors fold back) and there still needed to be room to plug the white Prime into the back. Yes, this could've been pulled off better if they'd done it using a modern transformation scheme, but the whole point is for this to basically be a reissue of the original '86 toy with a few more joints for added mobility. Straying from that defeats the purpose - if you're bothered by the toy looking like its original, then buy oner of the modern toys of him. I mean, you've got three to choose from now: Siege, Earthrise or SS86, so pick one and keep the bitching to yourself.
