So I haven’t collected Transformers since Kingdom. Decided to go back with the SS86 Dinobots (Starting with AOTP G2 Grimlock and the G2 colors Slug and Snarl), along with Venin because that was a childhood favorite.

For. 2026, I’m just getting the selects Dinobots Sludge and Swoop in G2 colors and Beast Wars Quickstrike and MAYBE the SS86 version of Cyclonus and then I’m out with TF’s…. again.

I ordered this instead of zoids prime.
I am still very on the fence about that prime. The more pictures come out the stranger it looks. The body is way too narrow and the head; yes it is a good looking prime but doesn't feel it fit the head.

Anyway. I hope this is one is good. I might pre-order the gfg for next year if this one turn out great.
If the quality is okay I think people will be fine going with their mosepia line

For a quick unboxing, I have not played with them yet but I did check it out the paint and the general built.

Damn I have to say this is good.

This is literally on par with diaclone in term of quality.
The nub marks are smoothly cut. The pin holes are clean (no left over plastic) and the paint while I can't promise to be 100% pristine but is sharp and clean.

The build also feels strong overall (but-). The plastic is good but for the black they choose those slightly hollow/less dense material for it. So the black plastic does look a bit cheap but I think the reason for it is they can't have anything too heavy for the combined mode.

I will see how it goes when I actually have the chance to play with it.
I do have to say i expected this thing to be bigger. But going eith what I've seen here this thing should be no taller than 86 Megatron- but it will be twice as wide as meg

They've come in collected volumes so it's easier to read through the whole thing in a functional order without manually jumping back and forth between the 2 or 3 concurrent books at any given point. I like all of Phase 1. Phases 2 & 3, the big one is the Wreckers Saga as it feels the most like it's directly continuing Phase 1, but I do also like Mairghread Scott's run on Windblade/TAAO alot. I also like Roberts' MTMTE/LL and think it's worth at least trying for yourself, despite its flaws (It's a very different type of TF story and some of the stuff really works, some of it doesn't).
It's really just Barber's run and much of the Phase 3 crossovers that're awful.
They rebooted in 2018 (this universe usually called IDW-2), and I haven't finished it yet, but it has a really abysmally slow start. It has its fans though, so i assume it picks up steam.

Out-of-continuity, the Hearts of Steel miniseries (and its continuation in Infestation 2) rocks, and Tom Scioli's comics "TF vs GI Joe" and Go-Bots are sweet.
I also recommend reading Dreamwave's War Within and "Generation One v3" comics if you enjoyed IDW Phase 1 - IDW very much carried over a lotta themes/ideas from there, even if they're not directly connected.

Apps like Gemini have gotten surprisingly good at generating toys. Once it's created the toy you can give it prompts like "generate a vehicle mode" or "change the posture" to get those box images. Obviously you'd also need to input an image of the box you want to apply the AI images to.

Almost all ratchet joints are weak as hell. They work fine on their own, but instantly develop problems. Notably both shoulder (both horizontal and vertical), knee and hip ratchets are almost incapable of supporting limbs in poses.

To go into detail:

-Extending the arm horizontally would eventually cause it to collapse back into the stock position, same with vertical, specially with the gun.
-Hips can kind of hold poses, but just picking it up, they would revert to the stock position.
-Knees (even after locking the transformation joint) are so loose that if I didn't balance the weight, he'd topple backwards.

I ended up applying fixes to most of them, but I'm still not satisfied. The only one that I couldn't fix was the horizontal motion due to how the ratchet is set up, but I'll probably apply something in the future.

Yes. I have the "lighting" effect connected to the matrix when I put all the hot rod's accessories in a bag. It is not like hot rod can mount the matrix properly.

So today I bought SS86 Grimlock, first time I saw one in person (found the G2 version but didn't want it). Even with the minor quibbles such as missing teeth and no sword I really like him. The only SS86 Dinobot I had before this was Sludge, because I got him on clearance.

Is it worth pursuing the rest of the SS86 Dinobots? Is it even feasible to do so without killing my wallet? I feel Slag might be tough to get at the very least.

It's a bit of a weird lurch when you look at the start of IDW and Cybertronians are a bunch of "beep-boop we are robots we don't have human things emotions or families or lovers or any sense of society resembling Earth", then by the end the comic is basically "Transformers are presented by Tumblr".

Thundercracker carried that "roboty robot" idea hard even when the comic shifted into full tumblr, which Acid Storm lampshaded with "People don't talk like this". At that point it's less "Thundercracker doesn't understand human interaction" so much as "Thundercracker is terminally autistic."

I really don't know how durable is the paint.

most lion is painted in this semi glossy finish. Some say those type of paint get sticky after a few years.

There is also the problem of you are forcing painted parts together in combined mode and the mold being how sharp it is, I can see (yes barely) some chipping/wearing out of the paint on the chin. It might not be tear and wear but it is something to be concerned- I see a much rounder chin would not have this problem.


In a way I wish the lion head is bare plastic.

Overall quality is up there with the diaclone stuff (and those as good as they are ar enjoy 100% perfect either)

One last thing

I don't know why but the nub mark for the lower jaw is located on the left cheek.
