Scale that is not labelled. Sort of a boomer term, but it is why those old Aurora, Revell and Monogram kits do not have a consistent size.
Airfix were the first to really create a set scale in the form of 1:72, then other companies follow.
>can't decide if windshield up or windshield down
>check pictures
>pretty much ever irl example of the TOW variant is windshield down
Well that settles it. Windshield down has a certain cool factor to it as well.

Manual for the 1/72 tamiya F-14D is out. This is just straight up the academy F-14 but superior. The moment they release swept wings+catapult nose gear its unironically over for GWH f-14. No fucking reason to get any other tomcat kit (besides maybe FM if you like open panels) once it comes out.

Interior of the Focus rally car is done. While these ribbons were much easier to cut to size they definitely were much harder to actually use. They're obviously much thicker than the thin plastic they intend you to use, and as such some of the routing (like going back through the buckles again) is physically impossible. Not only that, but fighting with the fraying ends was a complete nightmare. By the end I had gotten sick of it and half assed the belts for the 2nd seat. I've probably spent at least an hour on my hands and knees combing through my carpet trying to find the buckles when they would keep jumping out of my tweezers. I also realized when it was far too late that I got the seats switched, so I guess this car is from an alternate universe where Nicky was the driver and not Colin.
I now firmly know I never want to build a race car with a 6 point harness ever again unless I can get a premade one. If they were photoetch like most aircraft belts are, I don't think it would have been this hard and I'd be willing to take that trade off for not looking as good or realistic.
On to the suspension and underside next probably. I'm really not looking forward to doing the exterior decals at all. Wish me luck

Why does the civil boat market suck so much, there are like 6 good sets and the rest are just titanics and titanics and titanic variants and modern titanic equivalents
Now they also make sets where you have 2 titanics of a different scale in 1 box, like what the fuck
It could be the most interesting segment because specialized civil ships do vary a lot and each one looks completely different. Fishing boats, research vessels, rescue boats, icebreakers, all kinds of tugboats etc, they all have different equipment and are usually quite colorful which I like

Bruh, this looks like ass.
I wanted to do a brushed camo effect with airbrush, so I used Gunze masking snot. When it didn't want to come off I used warm water to loosen it up, and I think the acrylic paint wasn't fully dried yet and did this to the surface. So... free weathering I guess? Looks kinda like the Japs using poor quality paint. I also managed to scratch the paint at a few places down to the black primer trying to get it off, so I guess that's also free weathering. Also the masking was shitty in a few places, like the cupola, but I guess that's also free weathering.
If I lightly spray it with thinner using an airbrush to dissolve and re-dry the surface of the paint, will it fix it, or will it just cause another disaster?
Yep, kinda poopoo-peepee.

Why would you need to slow it down when airbrushing? Maybe very slightly if it dries mid air due to very low humidity. The alcohol drying fast and giving less surface tension makes it much better for airbrushing. But in brush painting application the alcohol is often strong enough to strip previous layers, so you have to be very anal in your approach and technique. With water based paints you can paint a lot differently. And for wet blending can't beat oils.
>>11608716
Man, I've had a very mixed success with brushpainting with Tamiya acrylics. Some colours seemed to be way easier to paint than others. But maybe I'm just retarded. What paint:thinner:retarder ratio do you use?
Also been making a Su-15TM but kinda fucked up the bare metal paintjob. Cheaping out on some surfacer did not work too great. Next I plan on doing the 1/72 Tamiya F-51D Mustang, so can someone here recommend a good way to make that aluminium look with a paintbrush?
>>11609127
Your best bet is probably going through aluminum colors of different brands till you find the perfect one.
Model Master metal colors used to be perfect, but now they're extinct in the wild. Maybe AK?

The AK 3rd Gen series is the most consistent one in every single aspect I have tried (both regular and metallic paint). There are a few outliers that are stinkers, but most of the paints are very consistent in coverage, quality, consistency and ease of use. The metallics are good for brush painting small details, I'm not entirely sure about painting large flat surfaces. Usually airbrushing is your best bet here. Also metallics specifically benefit a lot from being sprayed very evenly and in thin layers so the flakes align. Apparently Vallejo metallics are better for brush painting, but I have no first hand experience. I have sprayed Tamiya metallics with good results, but Alclad is apparently the best you can get. I think someone said that AK Xtreme Metal is a rebrand of that shit in Europe, but I can not 100% confirm. I did try them and they were great though.

Yeah as I said I don't know if there's really any good way of applying the metallics with a brush in any good way, the way the metal flakes in the paint work, extremely thin layers and great alignment from such layers is the key. If you really don't have any way of using an airbrush, then maybe you could try a rattle can? Then again you can get one of those shitty USB airbrushes for like 40 bucks so...
And about the black primer, it should absolutely be a coat of gloss black. I have had good results with Tamiya X-1 and Mr. Color GX-2.

Hypothetically is that green and yellow tank a Chi-Ha that you dunked in water while the paint on it had not dried yet?
But in any case the answer depends on several things.
1) What effect are you trying to achieve? Just some contrast or heavy signs of wear and tear?
2) How much do you care? Are you in this hobby to improve, see things through, improve and be proud of your models or just want to rush through your kits in order to have the absolute minimal return on your investment?
Doing the light base color will show up with more contrast and look like heavier wear and chipping on the green parts. Doing separate colors for the respective colors will leave a more subtle effect that may or may not be desired, but will probably look better in the end because you can do partial chipping with the yellow as well and have a better end result with different finishes.

Nah, it's a King Tiger :D I'm aiming for some contrast and want the colors to just pop a little. I really don't like to make my models super worn and dirty. So I think separate colors is the way I'll do it. I've built a couple of tanks before but this is the first one that has multiple colors so this is a new kind of problem for me. Thanks for the advice

lol how much did you pay for those? Printed 1/72 figures are like a dollar a pop including work time.
As for painting doing a zenithal and investing in some contrast colors is pretty much a lifesaver if you plan on painting more than just a few. Or at least mix your own contrast medium out of some matte medium. You do the base colors with those contrast paints and then just layer on as many highlights as you wish after that until you are pleased. And maybe a wash before or after in there somewhere to bring it all together. At such a small scale you pretty much have to count on the (good) molding of the figure to help you out. Shit molds and manual layering will drive you insane. Zenithal + contrast helps to cut the work in half so you can focus the manual brushwork on where it matters.

Taiwananon here. Still rangeblocked from imageposting so I will compensate with a wall of text.
So, this was a big event, doujin/anime x scale modeling convention. I'd say it was 5% military models, 10% other (fantasy, sci-fi, anime, gunpla, dioramas) models, 5% modeling-related stalls and 80% anime stuff. Also army recruiters outside had a stinger launcher set up right under the final approach route for the nearby airport which I found kinda funny. Lots and lots of cosplayers. There was a guy with three big containerfuls of resin cast airplane parts and I bought me a Kita-chan flipbook.
Thanks for reading my blog. Point is, I only took pictures of military stuff, right. Only the tanks, planes and boats - maybe one third of all the models at the convention, not including the stalls. I ran out of battery and had around 800 photos by the end of the third hour. I'm going to have to take a few days sorting them, so you won't be getting them today.
Now imgur appears to be down at the minute, and I'm curious: How would I go about uploading so many photos? For exmaple, there are around 277 tank model pictures of maybe 100-150 individual models and imgur only allows 50 uploads per hour. Even taking away the worse ones (maybe one third to half) that still several hundred images. Is there another image hosting service that would allow for these big album uploads?
I'll go back and take pictures of the non-military stuff tomorrow, but I won't be exhaustive. Lots of scantily-clad women and mecha.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what can I do if I want something around the scale of 1:4000? Buy a 3D printer? Are they even accurate enough with dimensions and colors at those kinds of scales?
Basically, I'd like to be able to build something similar to an entire battle scene on a single desk. It would be nice to see both sides of a fight, big terrain features, infrastructure and railways all in a single build, so I'm thinking 1:4000 would be the scale to go for. More conventional stuff like assembling your own diorama with a single vehicle and some soldiers around it also seems interesting, but it's not what I'm looking for right now.
Also, I'm pretty sure there was a model railways thread around here somewhere, do you guys happen to know how it died? I'd have thought that such an autistic hobby would be pretty popular on 4chan.

What the fuck are you talking about? Fully colored prints are only done by industrial printers. Get a resin printer and paint it.
>so I'm thinking 1:4000 would be the scale to go for
Do you comprehend that a man at that scale would be under half a millimeter? An Abrams tank would be 2 mm in length. You could stack grains of sand and set up that battle.

You're actually right, I didn't think that through, my bad. The problem is that I first thought about making part of a railway network with multiple stations on a single desk and the only way I could see of fitting all of that in would be to choose a scale that would make the wagons just a few mm. That would basically be a map with very small moving rectangles on it, which seems cute to me, but it's true that it wouldn't work for other vehicles and it would look pretty weird even for trains. Something more like 1:1000 would probably be more appropriate for tanks and things like that.
>What the fuck are you talking about? Fully colored prints are only done by industrial printers. Get a resin printer and paint it.
I understood that even normal 3D printers can use filaments of different colors in a single print, though I'm not sure how much accuracy and detail I can get, I'll look into it.

If you want any people represented at all, then going smaller than 1/300-1/350 will be retarded. (This is the smallest scale any land vehicles will be available as plastic kits) Even at that small of a scale you can't space out things at realistic distances. Sure you could print even smaller, but it will get retarded small.
>I understood that even normal 3D printers can use filaments of different colors in a single print
Yeah man, you will for sure be able to multi-color print those 2mm vehicles with a 0,4mm nozzle on an FDM printer. Minecraft cars will have larger voxel resolution at that point.

Taiwan Anon here. The photos are in, 693 of them to be exact. Allegedly the largest scale modeling competition in Asia. I separated my photos into 8 categories. Originally the best and the rest were separated, making a total of 12, but that was too much so everything is in one big pile now.
Tanks. First place was, I believe, the M32. I talked to the guy a bit so I recognized him, but otherwise they did not announce the winners' entries.
The Hetzer was 1/72 and had really good figures.
Judges took away the shortlisted entrants to judge them further in the middle of all this. They returned most of them, but I believe first place might be missing for all the other categories.

Jets. Apparently the disassembled F-14 took first place, and I talked to someone who said the internal structure was all scratch built. Impressive if true, thought I could never get a good look at it since it stayed at the judges' table and disappeared on the second day. Also, you're fired.

Overall a great experience, I even won a couple of shiny stuff I can put on my shelf. Everyone there was older and more experienced than I, and I had a blast talking to people in the same hobby. I really do encourage you to go to your local or national modeling competition, you will learn a lot more simply seeing at other people's works up close instead of through a camera. The contrast, lighting, sheen and shades, it all pops a lot more.
Thanks for reading my blog.

Can you explain this phenomena - most of the models range from great to excellent, the figures are okay to great and then the bases/dioramas have just straight up static grass fields with shit hovering on top or best case a bunch of unpainted foliage more or less blended into some dirt or snow? Is this cultural or something? Is only the model considered the main deal and everything else is ehh whatever? Is it a skill issue and asians can't into terrain? Because when I look at like Spanish model autists, they spend more time blending a fucking freehanded coke can into the roadside dirt than twitterbro does on his actual models.

I never really noticed before, but yeah, I see where you're coming from. I think it's a case of putting all the effort into the tank and the terrain more being an afterthought.
Maybe all the people good with terrains all went to the diorama category. Maybe half-melted snowfields or non-green grass are just hard for tropical country people. Maybe the floating tiger or jackson is a case of a universal base or pre-cut lawn. I haven't a clue.

I see this a lot too. As far as I can tell there are two kinds of people making dioramas, and the first category gets these results you speak of. First, there's the people that simply think everything needs to be in a diorama to be taken seriously. They have no real vision or idea for the diorama so the tank (particularly) just sits on a road or the jet sits on a carrier deck. Sometimes it's literally just an unrolled mat of that cheap looking grass material. The second category want to tell a story with the diorama or show a funny little scene off. The U-2 is a perfect example of this with the split between operational and museum condition, or the crew with a man with his head in the ground. I see a lot of the latter in large train builds by clubs where people love to hide little easter eggs around the whole set.
tl;dr it's sovl vs no sovl
>>11614182
Going from the rules of my local IPMS, it comes down to what gets judged and what doesn't.
Namely, bases are NOT judged, which is why many usually are just simple affairs if not outright phoned in - they're not being judged so as long as it gives the context for the model itself, if you don't want to put in the effort you don't have to.
Alternatively, if you do put in the effort, then might as well go all the way and make it a diorama. This in particular is where the catch is - if you enter a model and the judges decide the base is as much a focus as the model, they have the authority to MOVE your entry into the diorama category.

If it's an Open Rules competition (most are) I've been an Open judge and moving a piece to diorama must generally satisfy one or both of two conditions:
1. It tells some sort of story. It's not just a Panther in a bush, there are figures doing things. Retreating, fighting, moving up. Something is happening. This distinguishes it from elaborate static scenery.
2. The piece will do BETTER in the category it gets moved to. So if it's a bronze where it is, but a silver in the new category then it goes there.
There's some flexibility there, intended to favour the participant. If you've done a banger job on the scenery but it depicts no action and we can fudge you into diorama as a vignette for a better score, we'll do it. If it tells a story but the scene is a bit shit, we might narf you back to vehicle or ordnance and just judge that part if it'll score better.
That said, some people are just fucking cunts so not every competition will adhere to the same spirit. I know of at least one instance where the judges judged themselves and won, despite the flagrant conflict of interest. But this is generally rare and most competitions try to avoid even the appearance of this.

If you just don't find the time to actually build/paint, set aside a certain amount of time every night or on specific days where you will do that and then put effort into trying out more than the bare necessity.

I don't know what you mean by "shitty needle" but otherwise this is all skill issue. If you don't think properly and clog your shit, you will still get these.

The badger does fine if you want the smooth airbrush finish and need to spray large areas for primer or color coats. It can do medium size details reasonably well. The Iwata does the same but is also much, much better at small details and fine lines. The Iwata is also easier to use, disassemble, and clean than the Badger.
If you are committed to the airbrush thing I highly recommend going straight to the Iwata. My first thought when I started using it was "fuck I wasted years using that Badger!" but the Badger is still a decent airbrush.
For ref, the pic related is what I like the Iwata for. The fine preshading patterns are really easy with it. I freehanded the camo pattern with it as well, which I would not have trusted the badger to do.

Yes

No
>Do I need it for 95% of my work?
No
I bought it when they had the Kyiv Infinity campaign, so I saw it as a donation with a bonus. And then the ziggers blew up the children's hospital the campaign was supporting.

I'm simultaneously satisfied and unhappy with the underside. Its a bit too brown I think. might rub some more of the wash off before I continue
having an unpainted body is nice because I'm able to just wipe off the bits of overspray. I still need to touch it up a little in some spots because clearly my masking skills are lacking

Probably a hint... I say either a P-38 or (hopefully) an E.E Lightning.
If neither of those, then maybe a Hawker Tempest or even a F-35 Lightning II (doubtful).

There are three versions of the Kotobyukia 1/100 "Full Action" Rex - MGS1, Black MGS1 with special decals, and MGS4 with the 'damaged' parts and alternate pilot figures.
The original MGS1 version (which includes a Chain Base floor piece and mount stand to support it standing, Liquid Snake pilot figure, Solid Snake figure, Solid Snake holding a Stinger missile figure, and Gray Fox to pose under the foot) is currently up on the Koto US page for $80 before shipping.
And while it's not a bandai kit, I have built it and I'd describe it like a really big Real Grade - a lot of it is layering but there are working pistons and it'll do more or less any pose from the game.

You're good bro, just go ham with the clear coat and polishing. Any touch up will disappear and it'll look great. If the number box hasn't been melted down yet you would be better off cutting the decal under it imo.

Anyway, did some research and turns out doing an entire Bp.42 armored train would be like $700 with some thrifty ebay shopping and like 9ft long. Sounds like a lot, but it's still larger cheaper and cooler than that gay ass lego deathstar. Very tempting.
