As a Russian in Poland...
why is there not a single more beautiful city in Europe than this? With a more beautiful vista?
>>2764517 (OP)Every european country has history
>>2764645Some shorter some longer tho
I wrote History with a capital H for a reason
Wroclaw was especially fantastic and underrated. Warsaw as well.. only did 2 nights there due to many Poles advising against it, but wish I had done more
>>2764517 (OP)Very much overrated. What is their contribution to progress. Civilizational freeloaders. In about 10 years they will be most blaced slavic country.
Any notable person from Poland is a imigrant who hated there.
>>2764612Venice? Sevilla? Marbella? It's like you guys pretend southern europe just doesn't exist because it's popular. it's the most beautiful region on Earth
I'll get to Poland one day. There are just so many better places to visit first. I've done most of the US, a lot of Europe. My short list is Thailand, Japan, Northern Spain, Portugal, Bavaria. Maybe Poland after that.

>>2764692Whats the difference of history and History?
A unique thing I witnesses in a small town in Poland was seeing random half pints and pints of vodka left on benches , electrical boxes, curbs etc and seeing them in the same place 6 days later
Polish people don't speak much English do they? That might be difficult.

>>2764612Krakow is beautiful, but it's been destroyed by tourism/covid.
The soul of the city has been sucked dry. It's a shadow of its former self.
Unironically go to Lviv if you want to go to 'real Krakow', though probably not with a Russian passport, kek.
>>2765190You've posted 3 photos of the same square from different angles. It's pretty, but all I see is elderly tourists standing around in the freezing cold doing nothing. It doesn't look very exciting. The old town in Krakow is barely a Km long. Looks like maybe you could spend a day. I'm not understanding the argument why I would go to Poland over Spain? Have you been to Andalusia Spain?
>>2765386Not the guy you're responding to, but I've lived in both. Both are very comfy destinations, but serve 2 differnet character types
Andalucia is more geared towards being outside, being loud, wanting to dance, etc.
Poland is more based around more cozy underground pubs/bars where more talking is done. I personally prefer the latter in the long run.
Then you've got the time of year. Summer in Poland is absolutely god-tier climate, and the talent out on the streets is absolutely beautiful to look at. Andalucian summers are ogre, and it's a far better destination for spring.
When it comes to history, in general, Andalucian historical sites mog the Polish ones. There's just world-beating shit in Sevilla, Cordoba and Grenada destroy Krakow, Warsaw and Gdansk. Though, if WW2 and the cold war is your cup of tea, Poland wins.
For activities, Poland has a lot of fun things going for it in the cities thanks to the 'cheap stag party' scene and the fact that it can't rely on things like Alhambra, Mezquita, etc. Poles (and more recently, Ukrainians) seem to like making games and activities, and the scene is quite competitive. I'd also say the museums are of a higher quality, too. Polish museums are more industry-based, and a bit more hands on, whereas the Spanish museums can rely on just being absolutely awe-inspiring, and don't need added extras.
For food. Tapas culture is boss, but deep-fried Andalucian stuff gets tiring, and there's limited choice beyond the traditional. Polish food is alright, especially in winter, but places like Krakow are now international hubs of food where everything is available, and you can eat very very well for quite reasonable prices.
I found Poland more comfy for hiking due to climate and softer terrain, though Andalucia has more 'wow' factor, imo.
Polish tourism typically is assocaited with weekend breaks and chilling on the squares, but there's a lot more to do.

>>2765386>>2765425I'll stick to the south of Poland to make it a fair comparison against Andalucia as a region. Some recent trips I've done:
>Bieszczady MountainsA rare wilderness in Europe; the 'tail' of Poland in the southeast where the UA, PL and SK borders meet. You can properly get lost here. A rare minority live down here called the Rusyns/Lemkos/Hutsuls, and they have their own thing going on.
Enter via the town of Sanok, where you can find the main exhibition of the painter Beksinksi.
>Trail of the Eagles Nests & Bledow DesertA national park containing 25 castles in beautiful scenery. There's even a desert down the south of it.
Amazing for cycling.
>Silesia Industrial HeritageSilesia is the industrial heartland of Poland, and is like 15 towns/cities which have grown into each other and all have a slightly different feel. The place is full of breweries, mines, factories, etc which have been converted into museums or sites for activities. Some oof my funnest getaways have been getting random triains and ubers to shithole industrial towns, doing an activity like checking out a mine, or doing a brewery workshop, then getting smashed in random bars after, where they 0% expect foreigners to rock up to.
>Bochnia/Wieliczka salt minesWorld famous destinations. The scale of Wieliczka is fucking insane. They also offer more alternative tours and activities very far underground.
>SpasLots of spa towns in the south of Poland where you can do shit like swim outside in naturally heated pools in freezing temperatures outside, or be ina sauna naked with 50 other people watching a ritualistic dance overlooking the mountains, etc.
Hope that gives a little insight of Poland beyond the squares :)Would post links, but 4chan doesn't seem to like lots of links in a single post.
>>2765425That all makes sense. I wouldn't go to Spain in the summer anyway. I usually do my Europe trips in the middle of winter to snowboard or in late September for the weather. We usually don't hike outside the cities because we're walking all day through the cities anyway and we hit a lot of stops on our trips. When I did Spain, we did Madrid, Seville, Cordoba, Cadiz, Ronda and Malaga in 2 weeks by car. The sights in the cities are the best I've seen anywhere in the world. But I totally agree about the food in Spain. I was over the fried tapas and salted ham in the first 3 days. We ate a Mediterranean diet for the rest of the trip in Spain.
>>2765428Any reports for northern PL or eastern PL? Any reccomended towns/cities that are great to stay a whole week or two? I find Wroclaw great for this but am wanting to see what else is out there and maybe something smaller
>>2765613I live in Krakow, so my knowledge gets limited.
However, you can do a week in north Poland in summer, eeassyyyy.
>Mazury LakesRent a boat for maximum kino. Watch 'Knife in the Water' by Polanski beforehand to contextualise the place a bit.
>Malbork CastleMaybe the most impressive castle I've been to. Base of the Teutonic Knights. It's absolutely huge, and is a proper castle which saw action, unlike the cathederal/palace/hill/hotel larping as a castle in Krakow.
>Cycling Hel PeninsulaIf you look at Gdansk, you'll see there's a spit which stretches out for 20(?)km, forming a lagoon. You can rent bikes at the base, cycling all the way to the end, drop off the bike, then get a ferry back to Gdansk for a REALLLYYY nice day out.
The Hel Peninsula is just one long sandy beach, punctuated by a few small villages you can stock up on beers at.
>WesterplatteA peninsula/end of delta where WW2's first battle happened. A very nice walk through old forts with exhibitions.
>Gdansk Old TownTypical Polish/German old town with bars and shit.
>SopotThe "exclusive" traditional beach resort for Poles where the upper class would've hung out in the communist era.
>BeachesGenerally there's fucking beaches everywhere. I liked 'Stogi Beach' slightly out to the east of Gdansk, proper authentic Polish place where you can get fish/sausage/beer and chill the fuck out. The tram/bus journey was quite nice, too.
>TorunHome of Copernicus, decent old city like 60km away on high speed train. Never been, but Torun/Bydgoszcz is absolutely CRAZY about Motor Speedway. You might be able to catch a race.
EAST
Never really ventured out. Zamosc is cool. Lublin is alright. Forests everywhere. Maybe can play IRL VIP_ Counterstrike maps at the border if your budget is big enough. Lots of ads encouraging you to invest there, too, if you want to start a logistics firm.
>>2765627Malbork is epic, id like to go to Zamosc
Have you found any real mineral spa towns/thermal baths? Meaning pure mineral water.no chemicals etc added? I went to some near Zakopane last year but they were all chlorinated etc which ruins it for me. I want highly mineralerized heated natural water spings , like whats found in Budapest
>>2765639Nothing of the scale of Budapest, which is fucking amazing for the thermal baths.
"Zdroj" means 'spring' in Polish, and there's a fair few mineral spa towns:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spa_towns_in_Poland
Can't really say how 'natural' the facilities are though. The only place on the list I've been to for a spa weekend is Busko-Zdroj (during Covid for an all inclusive """medical consultation""", kek), which was kinda nice, and the hotel was really good value for money.
>>2765653>>2765639My mate goes on about Krynica-Zdroj, too. But again, can't vouch for how 'natural' things are. It's like a mini Zakopane over there, with more of a health focus.
>>2765653Yah so i went to Krynica Zdroj in attempt to heal at a "sanitarium" but it was kinda cheezy and was hoping to find a doctor that was actually good. The famous zuber water wells are here
It was really tough because English was hardly spoken. The only mineral baths I found were not pure natural mineral baths. A nice forest nearby made for some epic walks. And i did actually seemed to be healed in some way . My energy felt very grounded and i was able to forgive or let some things go. I was aiming to heal my digestive system/liver/gallbladder and the claim is that those mineral waters do all that
Did you find any healing or good waters for healing in Busko?
>>2765654Yeah can you elaborate more on your mates Krynica experience?? I think if i found a better resort and doctor and invested more time there, that some real healing could be made
>>2764517 (OP)>underratedMaybe ten or twenty years ago. Everyone goes to Krakow now. I was shocked at how expensive it had gotten the last time I went.

>Ciechocinek is known for its unique[clarification needed] 'saline graduation towers'.[4] Experts have considered the local saline springs to be of extreme value and named the thermal spring no. 14 "a wonder of nature". The therapeutic qualities of these springs are directed toward curing cardiovascular, respiratory, orthopedic, traumatic, rheumatic, nervous system and women's diseases.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciechocinek
Near to Torun up in the north.
>>2765658Cool. I will look into that Cheichoniek. In the past i had difficulties relying on the internet for mineral pools because i think the internet told me there were natural ones near Zakopane, but then i found none and some locals told me i had to go to Slovakia for those. But i will continue my quest for finding a real badass mineral spa. I should go back to the Rudas baths in Budapest!

It's 4:30 AM I went to Cracow this weekend
This city is fucking crazy, if you want to experience what Amsterdam was in the 2000s come to Cracow
In the center 80% of people speak a foreign language
There's a lot of British, they even have their own Irish Pubs and they're 100% full with Englishmen
I went in, wanted to order like a pint but there was no space at 10PM, they were having a party like from a movie, a footie on one TV, karaoke on another, everything occupied
2 Irish pubs next to each other
I eventually came to two bars in a historical Jewish ghetto/district
One hard some African techno/electronic music, I danced there for like an hour
And then I went to more like a psytrance club when they were raving in the basement. And I danced there from like 1 AM to 4:30 AM
Now I'm coming back home and it's literally so quiet, no one around, I can only hear birds chirping. It's so safe you can walk around and not worry about nuggets. At park at any time. The barmen charged my phone because it was at 1%
I was walking around
Pic tel another Irish bar as I was walking back, music blasting from inside at 4:30 am

I'm visiting Krakow at 19th-23rd of this Month with a group.
I've read multiple times that on the 20th and 21st of April 'everything is closed' for Easter.
If true, this equals that the only days that we can visit museums/castles/restaurants is at 19th and 22nd.
My group wants to visit Auschwitz Birkenau at 22nd. I prefer rather to visit museums than go to Auschwitz but it's probably the only chance I will get to visit it.
Should I go with my group or ditch them to see other stuff?

Regular life isn't as exciting as travelling around the country.
>>2780580Fair point. Rephrasing my trip, I spent most of the time remotely working evenings from a bloc apartment next to Saxon gardens and I just loved Warsaw, and then Gdansk, Wroclaw, and Krakow. >>2780590>I spent most of the time remotely working evenings from a bloc apartment Ah I see. Bitch you're just ordering from the starter menu. You can go to any restaurant in Spain and eat a bean, chickpea or lentil stew, some braised calf cheeks, grilled pork loin or steak, roasted lamb or goat, cod in a white wine and parsley or tomato sauce, grilled octopus, fresh tuna etc.
I lived in Spain for 3 years and the only people who complained about the food were picky Anglos who were afraid of eating fish or any meat that wasn't in chicken tendie form.
How's the skiing in Poland? Zanopane looks pretty rad and it's insanely cheap. It's also crazy cheap to fly into Krakow and rent a car.
I like to do about 5 days at a resort and ski/snowboard for 3 of 5 and just chill in the town every other day.
>>2781261it's great. the tourist infrastructure is very developed. better than on the slovak side of the tatras
Is knowing basic Polish enough to get by in Warsaw?
>>2781261It's shit.
Few pistes, hopelessly overcrowded (both the runs and the lifts) and snow quality is always a big issue. And it's not even that cheap any more if you consider what you get for your money. If you've ever been to a proper ski resort in actually high mountains, you'll be disappointed.
That said, it's fine for 3 days, just, you know, don't expect the Alps. And avoid school holiday season like the plague.
>>2764612I'm a German, Polish, Irish born American, do you keep the jews out of Poland? We need to unite and destroy them.
>>2781292That depends entirely on what you mean by "basic Polish" and by "get by" - you won't need much to rent a room in a hotel or to order a meal in a restaurant.
>>2781292Nope. Need at least B2.
>>2781460>snow quality is always a big issuethis is going to shock you, but snow is always going to suck when temps are above zero
>>2781460Where would you recommend instead for a one week trip?
>>2781715Yes, that is exactly why. We haven't had proper winters for years and our mountains look taller than they really are. By midday once the artificial snow melts you're either waterskiing or ice skating on the frozen sheet underneath. The more difficult runs are often closed for most of the season due to rocks sticking out. I'm not sure why you think this would shock me and what exactly were you trying to prove here.
>>2781740Wherever you find that currently has the best price/performance in the Alps. You really can't beat the empty lifts and the massive piste network you get there. I usually go for Austria since it's that little bit closer, but some people swear by Italy. No specific recommendations for resorts, frankly by now they've all melded in my head and I'm not up to date with ticket prices. Pick a nice glacier if you want to go off-season, the weather situation has made the lower parts of the mountains quite shitty over there too.
Alternatively, if you want an unusual destination that's truly dirt cheap, Georgia. Gudauri is ok for a couple days trip (skiing infrastructue wise, the town itself is crap). The downside is that while snow isn't an issue, wind is. You can be shit out of luck and get stuck for days with a (partially or not) closed resort. Happens more often than you'd expect. Also the slopes are quite gentle, so that might be a con depending on how skilled you are.
>>2781822We're leaning heavily towards Sauze d'Oulx in Italy. There are a ton of interconnected towns up there Sauze looks like it has a lot of good bars and food. Flying into Milan is also one of the cheaper options and car rentals are insanely cheap. Looks like there are some nice towns to hit along the way too like Susa, Sant'Ambrogio, and Arona. We'll probably go check out some of the basilicas in Turin too.

Poland is good because it had the vividly-intellectual Silesia and because much of it used to be pre-WW2 Germany.
Also, they didn't have to have some mass delusion that mass-importing the third worlders would somehow fix the guilt of the holocaust.
So you get pretty European cities as they used to be.

Some of them date back as far as the Middle Ages, though the area really gained its unique character in the 19th century when Jelenia Góra was part of Prussia. Polish Catholicism should be the only religion as an American saying this but we make do with our religions.
A train-based itinerary of Polish randomness hammered out in a single planning frenzy. A couple trains couldn't be booked in advance...the train from Plock toBrodnica and Grudziadz is only bookable two days out for some reason, and the LKA commuter train from Skierniewice to Kutno is operated by the Lodz government and isn't part of the national railway system. Departure will be via bus from Suwalki.
On second glance it was dumb to overlook Lodz, even if its cheap rooms all have horrid reviews. It makes sense why Europe travelers book everything in advance, especially in summer. The desirable properties get booked up early. Out of 15 nights I only booked one hostel to experience the squalor of poorfagging on $11.50/night. Nightly average for all of Poland was $28. Lots of shared bathroom options. All rooms within easy walking distance of train or metro stations.

Its not easy to pull in Poland at all unless you can pull locally already. You're not impressing anyone with being foreign, and your money isn't worth that much ever since they become relatively well of. Just flew into Warsaw, took the bus to a new neighborhood on the outskirts with a 76 PLN rental room ($21, it's abnormally cheap for Poland). The city is very pleasant in the warm summer sunshine. Tons of people out and about on the wide walk/bike paths. City buses are busy as well. 3.7 PLN or $1 for a bus ride, but nobody seems to enforce the ticket requirement. Much lower urban noise level than Asia, much cleaner air as well. The new restaurants on the bottom floor of the condo towers are rather pricey, but this isn't Southeast Asia. I better get used to it. Two scoops of fancy ice cream 16.5 PLN, almost $5. Italian pasta plates around 40 PLN, over $10. Kebab is 24 PLN or $6.50, but it's ginormous. Tables aren't set up for solo diners, but the joint is empty in the afternoon. Orderly people don't eat at random times, I guess. I got some ripe raspberries from a roadside farm stand. The market lady made snarky comments to her friend when I inspected her raspberries closely before buying. The ATMs only dispense 50s and 100s, which I've been foisting on annoyed business owners who always want smaller bills. Nobody stares here, it's so different from the Third World. There's a good number of pretty girls even out here in random suburbia. Some migrant workers as well. Immigration stamped me right in, but interrograted the work/education visa holders and even led some away to the office.
There are a few dogmoms and hamplanets here, but far fewer than Colorado. I'm not on any charm offensive here. People can think whatever they want of my vagabond ways. Usually city folks are "live and let live", they don't go out looking to get involved in a stranger's life.

Very nice little guesthouse here, a comfy room lined with bookshelves. After eight months of listening to revving motorbikes and breathing their fumes, it's so nice to be free of the nasty things buzzing around so self-importantly. No noise whatsoever here, even though on the map the place looks close to a busy road. Too bad it was only available for one night. IDK why, most of the rooms here are empty.
Days are long up here at 52° latitude. Farthest north I've ever been.

Night walks in Warsaw are KINO. Absolutely recommend it
Poles love being warm. The city bus was 80° inside and half the people were still wearing their jackets. Girls dress modestly and traditionally as a general rule. No fat asses jiggling in stretch pants, no ridiculous fake eyelashes, and only one instance of titties spilling out of a shirt (she gave me a "like what you see, huh?" look). Dresses and skirts are common. For the men, long beards are completely out of fashion here. Guys either shave at intervals or have a neat barbered beard. My scruffy goatee is an aberration. Many Poles clearly disapprove of the vagabond lifestyle, but their poker faces in public mask their reactions pretty well.
>>2797652Krakow is literally this clean. Especially the old town, which is scrubbed down and washed daily.
>>2797688>The city bus was 80° inside and half the people were still wearing their jackets.it was very windy today, probably like 19C outside and RAINING, genius
>>2797786Half the people think they're gonna freeze or melt in a summer shower, and the other half stroll nonchalantly through the rain in a T-shirt. The early afternoon was perfect, but the darkening skies caught many people by surprise. Also interesting how warm the buildings are here. My room is still 77° F at 10 PM even with the window open all day. Same temp I set the A/C to in the tropics.
Tomorrow I go to Zyrardow, an unremarkable rural town. This hostel has two Nigerians, an Indian, a fat Swedish girl and two 50-something Amerimutts. Many of them are long-term guests. The area has a fair number of street drunks. Booking in advance got me a private room w/ shared bathroom for 103 PLN, much cheaper than the walk-in rate. The SlavChad receptionist is talking nonstop to his favorite hostel girl on the other side of the wall. Bet he gets a steady stream of fresh puss.

>>2797568>is just getting oppressed, pillaged, and slaughtered, with Germans, Russians, and Ukrainians all trying to genocide them>heck, even the Swedes joined inNot true, Poland was a powerful nation for few centuries, and even under occupation we still tended to fight on. Granted, it gave this country this weird obsession about being oppressed and blaming our problems on Germans and Russians instead of dealing with them ourselves, which I fucking despise as a pole, but oh well, we can't have everything be perfect.
We also are interesting in that we are the most western point of eastern Europe, or the most eastern point of central Europe. So you can visit tons of beautiful catholic and orthodox churches and also eat tons of food that is similar to German, Ukrainian and Belarusian cuisine.

This is the check-in info? Seriously? The landlord couldn't be bothered to send a single message himself. When I bought some app calling credits and called his number using a bank's open WiFi in town, he just said "I don't speak English" and hung up on me after 10 seconds. I sent him Agoda messages in Polish, with no response of course. Luckily some other guests were stopping by their room just as I returned to the pokoje, and the guy courteously called the landlord on my behalf. After ten minutes of talking, my friend retrieved some keys that were hanging on the inside of the gate and handed them to me. Otherwise, Zyrardow is a very pleasant small town. I forgot that not speaking any Polish at all gotta result in a little extra on that price. The folk here aren't desperate like in thailand and couldn't give a damn to learn a lick of English when they have a stable BnB business (not airbnb) with regulars. I guess Im lucky?
My advice is just be a little patient and try integrating a little bit more and you'll catch it, but I guess all that effort isn't worth the $10-20 saved?

>>2798213(btw, its private property and we dont have HOA schizo-psychopathy here, so in this case the shared owners of that property simply DGAF and that is that, nothing the central State nor the local authorities can do about that)

it's because of Dżem i.e. jam, a legendary band for boomers & drunks, but not the same ever since their legendary leader Rysiek Riedel died in 1994 due to a heart attack from his alcoholism & heroin addiction
>>2798212I booked all my rooms and transport in early June. 15 nights of lodging in 12 properties cost me 1566 PLN, or 104 PLN per night. That's about as cheap as it gets for online reservations. Everyone travels during summertime, so demand for rooms exceeds the supply. I was amazed at how many properties were already unavailable 3-4 weeks out.
>try integrating a little bit moreNot interested. I'd rather keep moving, see new places every day. My travel preference is more one-night stand than romantic honeymoon. Every one I meet, I will never see again. That's the way it is.
>>2798213Gutters emptying onto an unpaved lot outside people's front doors is not something you see in American small towns.
I chanced upon the Zyrardow targowisko miejskie (farmer's market) at 2 PM, but everyone was just about closed up. Damn. Still got some cherries from a vendor just as he was putting them in his van. Waved a 10 zloty note around, got about 700 grams of perfect Bing cherries. In Michigan that'd be 10 dollars or more.
A fat Asian boy (probably the son of a nail salon worker) was waiting to cross a road when a passing car shouted some nasty things at him. Sucks to be a visible minority here. My host convinced himself that I was deliberately fucking with him after his messages were not going through to me - but he was still getting my queries.
The solution to unpleasant interactions is to pack my bags and move on to the next thing. The weather changes rapidly and with little warning here. IDK if these people even have coin-op laundromats. You can only hope the sun comes back out to dry your laundry on the line.
>>2798283 That's the town next to my hometown. When i was a child we used to drive to the McDonald's restaurant here because there wasn't any in my town. But from what i experienced, it was the most noticable thing in the town. It had this dilapidating rust belt old industrial town vibe mixed with postcommunist malaise in the 90s. Maybe it has changed now.
>>2798308I like to judge a town by the people on its streets. But how many of the people I've seen are festival daytrippers from Warsaw? They can afford to line up for 30 zl hot dogs and 35 zl burgers at the food truck. The single chicks seem bolder tonight, a few of them even locked eyes with me. Their last chance for a night of fun before resuming the workweek. They use such wonderful sweet-smelling perfumes. One pretty thing leaning against the barrier to talk to her friend on the outside casually placed her arm against mine and for a moment it was electric...but I gently drew back.

Kutno is a sleepy town. The most expensive room of my Poland trip at 140 PLN - still the cheapest on offer in town. Hostel Soleil is strangely located on the edge of an industrial sector with metal junkyards and workshops on the far side of town. The owner, a 60 year old lady, was happy to see an American and even put on some classical music while I was cooking dinner in the spotless kitchen. The first genuine welcome of this trip. Returning to my room around 10 PM I saw a pajeet carrying a case of beer to his room. Yep, migrants truly are everywhere...here in Poland they are always alone and minding their own business, unlike other countries where they loiter in groups and harass people.
There seems to be a graffiti war going on in the area between White Power skinheads and Zionist youth gangs, each of them marking their respective symbols on their turf.
Nice to see the girls here hanging out in the park talking IRL instead of staying at home texting nonstop like they do in America. The cool breezy weather is giving way to hot dry conditions as a blast of heat makes its way across Europe. Initial reports suggest temps may get up to 36° for southern Poland. In the north, highs are now forecast at a pleasant 30°.
Twice I've gone looking for a place to piss near a train station and came across a designated shitting area with dirty asswipes strewn about and flies buzzing around. The kicker is, the train stations have 24 hour public restrooms. Why are people shitting in the bushes?

Spent a night outdoors in small town Poland after my hostel reservation in Plock fell through. I called the owner and he was clearly drunk. The first time he hung up on me, the second time he let the call go on while talking shit with his friend and ignoring me. Then he stopped answering the phone for me or anyone else. Nothing to do but contact Agoda and get a refund. I wasn't gonna pay 250 PLN ($70) for a single room in a hotel, so I took the 11 PM train to Sierpc, broke out the puffy jacket and crashed out on a park bench. Some guys pulled up at 2:30 AM, but they didn't bother me. By 3 AM, the sky was already getting light. Figured I might as well warm up and burn some time taking a train roundtrip to Plonsk. Dropped 25 PLN on some sweet breads, then headed back to wait for the 2:45 "Rail Replacement Bus" to Brodnica.
I tried to visit the palace in Kutno, but it was closed. So was the museum nearby. Traveling Poland reveals a lot about American settlement patterns. Much of America was settled by European immigrants, who laid out new towns much like they were in the old country. However, the parts of America which were settled by Amerimutts are soulless car-centric muttsprawl instead of aesthetically pleasing parks and greenways. And thus the two regions of the world diverged...
>>2798387Holy shit slumdorker, you really need to stop moving around for a while and get laid
One week in Poland is complete!
>Total: 1163 PLN or $46 USD per dayThis compares to $41 per day for my first week in Taiwan.
>Lodging: 685 PLN or $31.70 per nightI've been happy with the quality of the budget rooms here. Rooms are well-furnished, clean and comfortable. 3 out of 5 properties had a private bath, 3 out of 5 had reception staff, 4 out of 5 had kitchen facilities.
>Food: 322.5 PLN or $12.79 per dayFood was a mix. Carrefour is a First World-tier grocery store by any measure, and farmer's stalls sell fresh produce everywhere. You can eat very well if you settle in and bring home a tote of groceries, but staying on the move means stuffing your face with a giant kebab or some sugary baked goods - more expensive and less nutritious than a proper cooked meal.
>Transport: 140 PLN or $39 for 491 km covered on eight bus & train trips...$0.08 USD per kmThree times pricier per km than Southeast Asia. The TLK trains have windows that open so you can feel the breeze and hear the clackety clack from your six-seat compartment. The IC trains are much faster and quieter.
>>2799167The girls here are fully aware of their own beauty, and are coolly judgmental of the guys. If you fall short in her estimation, you'll get frozen out. A lot of the dating strategies espoused on /trv/ involve buttering up insecure slum girls and making them believe that being dumb and brown and monkey-faced is beautiful to you. That strategy will flop here.
My weekly expenses have been steadily rising since January. From a low of $104 to the latest high of $320...
>>2799028Drunkard diarrhea baking in a porta potty on a hot summer day is one of the worst smells on earth. Soooo much shattered glass on the walkways here. Now I see why every park in America prohibits alcohol and glass bottles. In Zyrardow a drunk slipped and gashed his leg open in some glass broken by a drunk, then trudged for hundreds of meters down the sidewalk leaving bloody footprints and splatters. Karma is a bitch.
Old city wall out my room window in Brodnica. Hellraisers tear-assing down the streets with tires screeching, the usual evening pastime here. So many women have doodles on their skin, and even more guys do. The walls also have doodles all over them. A lot of stereotypical American white trash behavior has its origins in Europe, interesting.
Got refused laundry service again, despite it being listed as an amenity at this property. Everyone does their laundry at home here in rural Poland. Lots of refusals here, sullen defensive refusals. Some people walk about with eyes so hooded you can't read their expression whatsoever. Open curiosity is rare; most people avoid eye contact for more than a split second. Only the young lovers and a few blessed souls have an aura of happiness. Unlike America, nobody feels uncomfortable or unsafe next to a silent moody stranger here, nor is there any urge to smile and say "hello" to someone else for merely being nearby. It's when I try to engage people that they become rude in an aversive manner, the same way you'd react to a pestering drunk trying to chat with you.
>>2799240>Unlike America, nobody feels uncomfortable or unsafe next to a silent moody stranger here, nor is there any urge to smile and say "hello" to someone else for merely being nearbyI think this is just a slav thing. I have friends from Russia and Czechia and they act the same. You have first to know someone to laugh with them. We all also bond over misery. I doubt you will be accepted though, cause you probably don't know how to complain the right way. Certainly don't complain about Poland to people on street. You can only do that if you are Polish.
I've lived a bit in western Europe and the smiling and friendliness felt weird to me. Especially when some random person said hi to me. I just started at them confused every time it happened. I always said hi after a second or two as I reminded myself that this is normal. Also everyone said I have a sad face. Funny to see the other side.
>>2799224Have you been seeing empty pints and half pints of vodka left on top of ledges , benches or electrical boxes? Last time i was there , i stayed in a smalll mountain town, and I saw glass bottles scattered all about, and they were still there 6 days later.
>>2799259It's strange being in a culture where drinking is basically a human right. The only 24 hour stores here are alkohole shops. A 500 mL bottle of good beer can be had for 2.69 zlotys. You can drink anywhere except public transport. Eventually someone will come around cleaning the streets with a broom and dustpan, but in small villages it might be a while.
>>2799356You cannot legally drink in any public places, although this law is only selectively executed.
At last some foreigner is actually discovering the dirty side of Poland, i am tired with explaining people that the real life here is not like they saw in the market square in Cracow or Warsaw CBD.
>>2799358The summertime greenery and bright skies do make the countryside look idyllic. It's when you interact with the people that you get a sense of how grim the year-round life is here for the average Joe.
Lots of strange odors in the older parts here, coming from factories and musty old buildings. I spent the first six years of my life in a small Polish immigrant town with an abandoned factory in New Jersey, so some of the smells induce a sense of nostalgia. But there's no way I would settle in here to the life of a small town loser with a dead-end job, a basic apartment and a couple drinking buddies to bullshit with.
Pretty girls everywhere on a warm day showing off their belly buttons. Many more than in America. The drunkard losers here seem impotent and uninterested in women, so the girls don't stay indoors fearful of rapey creeps like they do in America. It's hard not to stare like a lustful pajeet, desu.
Old women rule the roost. Polish businesswomen use the slightest pretext to get annoyed and scold me. It gets tiresome dealing with such sour people. Which is the point, I guess. They hope you go away and don't come back. Might as well put a sign up that says "The Customer Is Always Wrong".
5 zl worth of ingredients, plus 33.6 zl for the taxman, the absentee owner and the four bitchy girls idling around an empty restaurant. That about sums up the Poland dining experience.
>>2799536>da grassoit's a chain restaurant. don't eat in those.
>>2764517 (OP)This guy posting pics needs a vlog. Getting huge 'idiot abroad' vibes here. Kinda amusing to follow.
>>2799552Merely disproving the whole
>Poland is underrated/trv/ meme. The country has many shortcomings from a traveler's perspective, most glaringly in the food & attitude department. Only in Poland would a property owner blatantly disregard my prepaid reservation and leave me sleeping on a bench, or get furious and use abusive language toward a guest because his messages weren't getting through the day before. Only in Poland is the freaking McDonalds seen as a desirable place to eat instead of the lowest tier of goyslop. Only in Poland do produce vendors get butthurt when a customer inspects their offerings for quality and ripeness. Only in Poland are park walkways strewn with shards of broken glass. Reliable public transport and plentiful green spaces are where this country shines, but that's it. Poland is definitely less of a high-trust society than Thailand or Malaysia. Cash registers have a locking lid here that blocks the customer's view of the contents, and bicycles are always secured with hefty locks.
>>2799685Honestly, please make a vlog. You have a naive enthusiasm and drive which would get mad clicks. It's genuinely fascinating reading your perception of everything.
>>2799685The thing about the bums and broken glass is true. For the rest I genuinely wonder what the hell you are doing to get these kind of responses. It shouldn't be that negative so long you know how to explain yourself. Unless it's cause they just know you a foreigner + you are doing some stupid shit.
When it comes to dining, go somewhere that actually serves Polish food. We don't eat often in mcdonals. Go to a milkbar or some pierogarnia. Try pierogi ruskie, placki ziemniaczane or knedle.
Grudziadz walled city is beautiful. My room with shared bath on a very quiet street is only 80 zloty, but the owner wanted a 500 zl damage deposit. Ridiculous. I had to fork over one of my emergency $100 bills to check in. Then they gave me the wrong entry code. At least the travel agency guy who checked me in was friendly and conversant in English. The owner, like 90% of small town Poles I've encountered, speaks no English.
>>2799756In case you haven't figured out yet, I don't understand Polish. Written words like przystanek, dworzec or haslo I can pick up, but spoken Polish I'm hopeless.
>>2799705I go days without speaking a single complete sentence to anyone. How's that for naïve enthusiasm? Writing about a place reserves it a spot in my memory. Once the previous day's experiences are neatly shelved, one's attention can return to the present.

Grudziadz is really charming. It's amazingly tranquil and the happiest place I've visited yet. Lots of people down by the river watching the sunset, or dining alfresco at the plaza eateries. Seagull cries and human chatter make the soundtrack, not revving vehicles or humming industry. The ramparts of the fortress city tower above the river, surrounded by swallows gorging on insects. This will be my last two-day stay in Poland.

Saw a trad Polish girl wearing a knee-length dress and sitting at a picnic table with her girlfriends next to the river path...except her arm was wrapped around one knee, with her dress wide open and her little white panties in plain view of everyone walking by. 20-something girls are all feeling horny in this warm summery weather, but they remain sexless because they only want a guy who looks like Brad Pitt.
A river otter swam by giving me curious looks before vanishing beneath the surface.
>>2800088man Grudziądz is so under-invested for being such a picturesque 100k town in Poland

>>2800088>they remain sexless because they only want a guy who looks like Brad Pitt.you're so pathetic it's unreal.
Olsztyn has a beautiful lake near town perfect for summer holiday fun. Only 78 zloty for a private room in the lovely centrum at Hotel Wysoka Brama...if you can find a vacancy, that is. Apart from the departing streetcars, it's pretty quiet. Room curtains are useless at blocking out the light here. It seems these people hate sleeping in complete darkness.
A negro migrant approached me in a tiny railroad town asking how to get to an even smaller village in the countryside. There's a smattering of foreigners everywhere you go here, but they're rarely seen taking their leisure in the city center.
The basement restaurant here offered trout for 29 zl, but it was already closed at 8 pm. Carrefour also closed by 8 pm. Bakeries all closed as well. It's either KFC or Zabka for avocado and cream cheese sandwiches.
Walking out on a peninsula jutting into the lake I passed a guy sitting butt naked on a log with his back to the trail and his junk on display. Farther on, two other (clothed) faggots were lurking around looking nervous over my arrival. I found a different way back and left them in peace.
>>2800146None of this is about me, tardface. I am merely relaying my observations regarding the large number of attractive women who never have a man by their side.
So far I've encountered four rail carriers (besides PKP Intercity) which offer rail service in Poland, with lower prices and far more departures than PKP.
>Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna
>Koleje Mazowieckie
>Arriva
>PolRegio
Their services often do not show up on Google Maps, particularly for the second two. You have to download each company's app and search for tickets on it. Undoubtedly other regions of Poland also have their regional transport companies.
>>2800387These are all regional carriers, hence lower prices

Neat location for a budget hotel in Olsztyn, but with my room so bright it was tough to stay asleep.
The train to Szcztyno - seven freakin consonants in a row! - was nearly two hours late. Back among sour-faced people again. An angry man punched someone's door in passing while walking with his friend, who was trying to get him to talk it out. The fruit vendor gave me a bag of half-rotten strawberries, rang it up for 15 zloty, printed the receipt and pressured me to pay. If I was paying full price I only wanted the ones suitable for snacking, but she dumped the bag out in a huff and crumpled up the receipt, telling me to go away. It's always the women with the bitchy attitudes. I never have a problem with the guys. The guesthouse owner was friendly, but suffering from a case of appallingly putrid flatulence. Had to breathe through my mouth when checking in.
Kids heading out on their summer camping adventure after getting off the train in Szcztyno. The boys and girls are in separate groups, but they still go camping together.
Salad-stuffed cheeseburger for 17 zl (about $4.50). The patty was very disappointing, like a boiled sausage patty. Not even grilled. Malaysian burgers are so much better for less than half the price.

With the nine-month mark approaching on this trip, travel fatigue has begun to set in. Oh well. Three nights left in Poland, then six nights in Lithuania, one night in Istanbul, and one night in Denver. That about does it for this year.
>>2800855Yeah, almost everywhere you go here, you're bound to spot at least one eye-catcher. If you like brown girls, this obviously isn't the place to be. Some girls here love tanning, but most are pale.
