Enrages me when I'm asked to close the window by a stewardess. Recently was flying over fucking Siberia and Mongolia while listening to Fall of Civiliation's episode on the Mongols. Wanted to soak in the sheer scale of everything. Felt like a criminal randomly putting up the blind and checking how many more trees there were underneath.

With no clouds, I can spend entire flights looking out the window, imagining what's happening, and trying to match up open street maps to the terrain underneath.

ITT: people who just got done with their first and last long haul flight for the next few years.

Having the window open during ascent and descent is fine because you'll actually be seeing something interesting some of the time. Same with flying over some easily large recognizable landmark, like the Grand Canyon or Rockies. Cool open your window for 10-15 minutes soak it in then drop it back down.

I just got done coming back from the US after seeing some friends, DFW to HND... Holy shit the amount of nogs and browns that had their window up as we chased the sun (10am depart with 3PM landing) was insane. It's fucking 10 hours of the Pacific with 90% cloud coverage you dumb fucks.

What about a flight taking place during the daytime? The only time you, or for that matter any other person in this thread making the same argument have any actual grievance is when low angle sunlight is involved. Taking a peak at the sunset/sunrise is fine but leaving the window open during that time is retarded. That is legitimately blinding. As far as sleeping in the daytime thats your problem buddy. Book the window seat next time if it bothers you so much. Thats called planning.

Either man up and go to sleep regardless of lighting conditions, or cover your eyes, once again its your problem.

Some people are also extremely nervous fliers. The average NPC doesn't even understand why a plane flies, let alone the many, many things that can go wrong and the endless redundancies and pilot training schemes designed to thwart fatal errors.

There will always be a few people every flight who sit there clutching their armrest, thinking their flight is about to become the next TWA 800 fireball or wacky inverted Alaska 261 any second.
