Na, my map is far more modest. Which made me realize I need to accelerate my bucket list.

Guizhou is amazing and the food was surprisingly good. Although I had local friends showing me around and that made a difference.

Ironically, I had a hard time enjoying the nature in Chile, though the country's nature is still great. I tried to see Torres del Paine but by the time I gained motivation to actually hike up the mountain it was already too late in the afternoon (and there would've been thunder). I have some friends over there, though, so exploring Santiago and Concepción still gave me a great time. I'd easily be willing to go back. (it helps that I speak spanish though)

As for the American question, there's definitely some, though it's relatively rare I think? I personally am more interested in not-America, though there's a lot of stuff to see in the US so it would be cool to see more of it. That said, there are some places on my map that I visited when I was a teenager, so I don't remember that much and seeing the cities as an adult would be nice. Namely, the Pacific Northwest.

It's all a matter of perspective. For example you have relatively easy access to the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean / Central America, which I would love to visit, but are still prohibitively expensive for me. The only time I went to the US myself was on a work trip, so I had most of my expenses paid. Also, alas the golden age of when us euros could hop on a flight and visit another euro capital for a weekend like 60€ are long gone, flight prices have gone up a lot even for short-haul flights so even relatively "easy" trips are getting more and more expensive (that's not even mentioning the fact that european capitals, at least western ones, are hideously overpriced, especially when it comes to hotels / BnBs)
>>2788957
I did like it a lot, but it's definitely not a trip I would recommend to everyone. I went in the winter, which meant no hiking or other very outdoorsy stuff, but the rugged snowy landscapes and the ancient monasteries covered in snow were a true sight to behold. However, apart from churches and mountains there is not much else the country has to offer (also Georgia next door has better mountains or so I've been told). The food is great but not exceptional, Yerevan is cool and interesting but not mindblowing, you get the point. If you want a cheap trip in a country with a lot of interesting history, landscapes and architecture, that still has a relatively underdeveloped tourism industry (we had to improvise a lot, fortunately it's very easy to find taxis and tours at convenient prices) and is relatively off the beaten path (most tourists I saw when I went were from places like India or the Philippines), then yeah, I would say Armenia is a good option. My personal highlight for the trip was the Byurakan observatory, picrel. If you have other questions feel free to ask

one of my family members visited last year, and he said pretty much the same thing. Lhasa filled with concrete tower blocks like every other Chinese city, giant highways, no sign of restrictions being loosened up a bit, and very few foreign tourists.

one funny anecdote is that the police have fitted average speed check cameras on the highway that note when you enter a certain section of road and note when you exit, then calculate if your average speed was higher than the limit and fine you accordingly. In response to this, their driver simply took his 4x4 off the road and drove around the cameras at the exit. Other people stopped their cars on the road just before the cameras and waited so their average speed would go down.

I've also heard there's a lot of brain drain from there to Chengdu and Sichuan, because universities and higher education is very underdeveloped.

There's already Mapchart.net for that honestly. For me, filling out the map for the first time is the best part. You can go through old travel photos and google what subdivisions you visited, talk to your parents about trips in your childhood. You're supposed to save it and only fill it out when you visit new locations, if you fill out the entire map from scratch every time these threads come around I can understand it's a bit of a pain in the ass.

Thanks for sharing I understand a bit better now. The ux of filling in this map is going over and organizing memories reliving them.

What if the app could let you attach photos or notes on places almost like a map interactive scrapbook.

More time actually organising memories and less time clicking. Or is it the clicking you like? the dopamine hit checking a box and getting to check many boxes on a larger country.

Hello, Norwegian map autist here. Sorry for the radio silence, I was planning to update the map around New Year's, but because a lot of people at work was sick, I've been busy with working a lot of extra shifts for half a year now and it's taken all my energy. Things have improved lately, people are coming back to work and they've hired a few more people, so I'm back to my old schedule. This has allowed me to finally work on the new update. These are the changes I found:

>BIOT will join Mauritius
>there's a new region in the Philippines, so I might redraw the map to its provinces instead, lots of smaller and less visited countries have their complete set represented on the map. At the very least I'll make a DLC out of it.
>there are new regions in Mali and Angola
>some regional borders in Iraq, Latvia and the Republic of the Congo has changed
>regional reforms in Burundi and Vietnam will reduce the number of regions, these are approved and will be implemented this year, I'm only waiting on an updated map so I can redraw them
>will add Martim Vaz to Brazil since an Anon requested it

If anyone knows other changes or has suggestions, please share them. This map is a group effort, and we can only improve it if people reaches out with their ideas.

Question for smart people: Are Ireland's counties correctly represented on the map? It looks like it's missing five city counties, but these aren't new additions, so I'm wondering if I've left them out in earlier updates for a reason and just forgot.

Anyway, here's my map. Since last time I posted I've visited Rome. I've already been to Italy (Sardinia) years ago, but I visited the Vatican City for the first time, and also the offices of the Order of Malta, which I count as a "country". My current tally is now at 38 countries, 33 UN members and five "others".

I can't answer for Catalonia that well because it was in the middle of the pandemic and it was a very tough time for me mentally (on top of the "wise" decision to have 4 roommates at the time), but I personally enjoyed it. I like public transit a lot, so being able to take Barcelona's metro was nice. I also briefly went to Tarragona which I enjoyed a lot, and I actually quite like how Catalan Catalonia is. Now I'm sure there's more Spanish, but during the pandemic there was waaaay more Catalan and it was surprisingly refreshing.

There's definitely immigrants ofc, but the ones that actually do crimes don't usually run kebab shops, so I usually get along with most of them well.

HEART has a lot of errors and weird pixels. So, from what I understand, the RT-BAM guys want to fix that.

I hope it will be released to the public, but I am not sure. They have a thread on alternatehistory.com, though.

However if I get to go again, I wouldn't plan more than two weeks there, and would combine it with another country.

Pardon my autism, but I took the liberty of polishing up your map.

I noticed you prefer to use Paint's default colors to fill the map, so I changed the legend to match your preferred colors.

I noticed you left a part of Canada blank (Prince Edward Island). I don't know if you actually visited that province, so I filled it in with the lighter green (unvisited region). If this is wrong, then my bad. Either way, I've brought it to your attention.

I colored the rest of the US territories bright red (unvisited part of home country). You only covered Puerto Rico, but I got you on the rest. I filled in the US Virgin Islands, Navassa Island, the US Minor Outlying Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

I gave the same treatment for countries that you've visited. You may not have visited these territories, but you did visit their parent countries.

Portugal: Azores and Madeira
Spain: Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, and the tiny territories on the northern border of Morocco
Netherlands: The Caribbean territories

You also missed a chunk of mainland Netherlands, so I filled that in, too.

I didn't mess with yellow, because those are obviously part of your travel plans.

I've never been on this board before today, nor am I a seasoned traveller like the rest of you, but I figured I'd kill some time by taking part.
Pretty much every bit of travel I did was when I was 18 or younger (I'm 21) with my family, and since my mums British and my dads part Berber Algerian, we only ever travelled around the UK and the Maghreb (+ Turkey since it's a basic Brit spot). I sound like a spoiled cunt saying it, but most of the time I just wanted to go home because I really don't care about my heritage, and my parents were miserable fucks anyway so it's not like they made the trips easy to enjoy.
That being said, I've always wanted to do a tour of the 13 colonies, but just because it's a simple categorisation), and I worked part-time all through high school and university as well as doing internships/a placement year, so I can afford to do it when I graduate next summer without going into crippling debt or being faced with permanent unemployment like most Londoners these days. I'm not exclusively into Revolution history, but the colonies are a include all the states I've always wanted to visit, be it due to their history or just aesthetic/baseless personal passion. I know that I'm missing regions that are part of newer states rather than the original colonies, but it is what it is. American footballs my main sport so it's a shame that I won't be able to watch any NFL/CFB games, but I'll catch an NBA/MLB game every time I'm in a city with a team since I'm a casual fan of those sports too. Don't have any friends so I'll be going solo, and I doubt I'll be making any when I'm there so I'm not too worried about the social aspect of tourism. Pretty much the only thing I'm undecided on is whether to start in the North or South.
I only want to "visit" Australia because I'm hoping to move there a couple years down the line. Sorry for the blogpost, but typing this out made me realise just how much of a bore I am, so really I'm the victim here

Phillies games are great too and citizens bank park is a great stadium

PNC park is better (Pittsburgh) but not sure if you'll be out there

Also don't sleep on Chads Ford/Brandywine region in PA/Delaware. It's got some surprising art history (Wyeth family and Brandywine school) and some interesting Swedish + Dutch sites if you're into that. It's pretty modest but the people who work at those places are very pasionate.

Utah and Wyoming had been very nice, for a european everything feels larger and more spacious. I visited a bunch of sights, which had been overly touristy. This is even more noticable if there is nothing around these spots. It is comforting to simply understand the language and I had a great time there all in all.
Hokkaido I visited in Winter time, it was very nice, way more relaxed than kyoto or osaka or even tokyo. I was mostly in Sapporo and did not participate in any winter sports. The city was nice and had beautiful parks. I will definetly reivisit hokkaido again and spend more time there. A big negative for me was the speed of the long distance trains there, it took forever to pass greater distances. Not very well traveled but I'd like to be. But Japan and now France keep calling me back so I keep wanting to go there instead of try new things. And Taiwan deserves another visit too.

I never thought I'd want to go to France by the way, the wife dragged me into it and honestly I fucking really like the place. Was never on my list before.

Thanks. Greenland was quite interesting. I would recommend Ilulissat for the glacier and icebergs. It's actually where icebergs originate from, including the infamous one that sunk the Titanic. Nuuk the capital is kind of just a town, but you still get the stunning oceanside view, and there are some interesting cultural museums. Seafood was great. I wouldn't mind going back again to explore other regions, like the north eastern national park or southern tip with its Viking ruins.

As for Amazonas, I was quite young, but I had fond memories playing with pink river dolphins. That was pretty cool. I remember the Manaus opera house, which I wouldn't mind going back to, to go see a concert.

We have some input on where we go but a lot of it comes down to what positions are open and, like you said, who you know. Poor performers are typically sent to DC purgatory or rotate around Africa where oversight is generally more lax. People get up to all sorts of wacky shit there like mining bitcoin with embassy electricity or farming shrimp in their house pool and selling it to local restaurants.
I can quit any time I want, it's not like the military. But my plan is to stay in til I'm 50 and max out my retirement benefits. After that, who knows? Maybe I'll do the Asia visa shuffle, or just stay in America. All depends on how the future shakes out.

I spent a lot of time in my gf's hometown, which is a small town in southern Hebei province of about 100k people
life there is by no means more relaxed than big cities, you still see people rushing everywhere and pushing in queues etc
infrastructure quality is good apart from non-toll roads that get destroyed by trucks
there is a lot of corruption and reliance on connections for jobs etc. Corruption situation is better in big cities but in ones under 2-3 million it is thriving. Almost everyone working a government job in their city got there through connections or paying a broker (i.e. 100k yuan for a job as a nurse in the hospital, which only earns 7k per month) but people will still pay because those jobs are very secure
it's still very safe but apparently some people steal electric scooters at night
people stare a lot and are not at all used to foreigners. My gf makes me wear a hat and facemask while we're there otherwise everyone on the street will stare at us. One time we went to a mall and a kid followed me for about 5 minutes shouting at the top of his lungs: OH MY GOD!! AN AMERICAN!! (in Chinese)

the biggest difference between these small towns and the bigger cities is a lack of western brands and less public transport and worse jobs

to see really rural China you have to go to villages with no public transport, once you get there it is like another country

partially. in Beijing I did not experience much staring, but I think people are more subtle about it. by yourself people won't usually stare but if you are in a group it's more likely
outside of Beijing, Shanghai, and cities with lots of expats like Qingdao I would expect a lot of staring. I got used to it after like a month but my gf hates it (because they stare at her too) hence the mask and hat

As a general rule of thumb, if the person in front of you looks like they're old enough to remember the USSR, they most likely speak russian as a second (or sometimes first) language, if they're younger than that then they usually know a little english. It does vary significantly from country to country of course, in countries that have tied themselves more to the west (the Baltics mostly) english is more widely spoken, while in other areas (e.g. central asia) russian is much more widely used

In general Venezuela is a bit hard to travel around. Planes are limited and the other real option is by road but the infrastructure is so shaky driving from point A to B can take you the same hours it takes a plane to fly from South America to Europe.

How was the Khujand trip? I was toying with adding it to my itinerary for next May, but to do it as a tour seems to mean basically hiring a personal guide.
Anonymous No.2809379 [Report]
>>2809244
It was really fun and no, you can absolutely do it without hiring a guide. What we did was:
>get a Yandex from Tashkent to the Oybek border crossing (about 300 uzb som / 18 euros)
>cross the border on foot
>grab a taxi from the Tajik side of the border to Arbob palace in Khujand (150 tajik somoni / 14 euros), visit the palace
>get on a mashrutka from the palace to the bazaar (5 somoni / 0.5 euros)
>visit the various sights around the city centre, mosque, bazaar, fortress
>hop onto the cable car that connects the two sides of the river (80 somoni / 7 euros per person)
>call a taxi back to the border (another 150 somoni), cross it, Yandex / shared taxi back to Tashkent
If you have a full day in Tashkent and leave reasonably early in the morning it's perfectly doable even if transport times can get pretty long, the border crossing at Oybek is open 24/7 so theoretically you could go back to Tashkent late at night but we didn't want to risk it. We also didn't have too much trouble at the border, there were queues but wait times were not unreasonably long. Two more warnings:
>Yandex does NOT work in Tajikistan, you have to use another app called Maxim for which you need a Tajik SIM card (or you have to ask someone else to call a taxi for you, which is what we did)
>on a related note, our eSIM did not work in Tajikistan. We didn't know why but it just didn't work and we ended up spending the whole day with no internet connection except restaurant wifis
Khujand gets barely any foreign tourists. It was really fascinating for many reasons, not least the fact that there are giant posters of the local dictator / eternal president plastered literally everywhere. The bazaar was also really fun

Why are racists told to "fuck off to /pol/"? If people actually cared about following the rules that much, they should be consistent about it. It should really be "fuck off to /b/."

I made it splored.com if you want to check it out.

You can upload the png of your map and it'll load in the tool. You can make changes and download the new version or create an account and save it then share the url.

You can comment and like other maps.

This is an MVP and there might be bugs but I will spend a bit more time on features in future.

A way to remove colors without clearing the entire map would be nice. I'm using Brave, and once I fill a country, I can't fill other subdivisions or change the color. This didn't happen with Firefox, so it's a browser problem, any way to fix that you think? Also some bugs, filling in the UK also gives you the Faroe Islands and Jan Mayen, and Mexico gives you Hawaii. Another little known fact about the map is that all the ocean squares around island groups can also be filled in with one click, so maybe you could find a way to incorporate that if you fill in an island country? But overall nice job Anon, I really like it, this will for sure bring more people to these threads.

I lived in Bristol and worked in Newport at a hotel. Driving to work could take anywhere between 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on traffic. And then they decided to make it a one lane road coming off the bridge for some godforsaken reason which made traffic even worse

Out of curiosity, how do you guys count your drives? If you just pass through a province on a train, do you mark it down as visited or don't count it unless you actually went out of the station?
Anonymous No.2817057 [Report]
>>2817055
I added the red (orange) colors for that purpose. Any sort of transit through a province, or a stop specifically for the purpose of transit (stopping to get gas, layover at an airport, etc).
Anonymous No.2817062 [Report] >>2817073

Depends on the drive I guess. Just driving from A to B doesn't count, but if I drove around a US state with the explicit intention to visit the state from my car, even if I never stopped anywhere, then I'd count it. Train rides and airport stops doesn't count in my book, you don't see or do anything touristy at all. Though I guess something like the Trans-Siberian railway could count, in that case I'd probably add a separate color for it. Anyway nice map man. Lots of green. How was Crimea? I assume you went before it went to pot.

Yep. Went by air so I have an old passport lying around with the now unobtainable Ukrainian Simferopol stamp.
It was alright. Varied landscape with mountain ranges, steppes and a rocky coastline that reminded me of the Balkans. Sights-wise it's mosques, churches and Tatar palaces with a medieval castle and a XIXth century neogothic summer palace here and there. Cities were mostly just generic post-Sovietism with the occasional street that looked somewhat Southern European, nothing particularly exciting. The resort towns I've passed through were awful. Narrow and packed beaches with shitloads of concrete everywhere. I don't doubt there are great and beautiful spots to relax in the bays out there but they're certainly not where everyone goes to roast on the sand.
All in all, I liked it enough but it wasn't mindblowing. Good enough for a week+ getaway when it's not too much of an issue to get there.

I only count it if I spend at least an hour outside the train station, airport, etc. I had many layovers; I even left the airport for some of them, but I don't count those countries.

Any chance of an update with the new Vietnamese provinces?
Anonymous No.2817547 [Report]
Norwegian map autist here. I'm waiting for this thread to hit the bump limit, then I will make a new thread with the new map update. I'm going away for a few days, but /trv/ is slow these days and the thread won't fall of the board for a week or more after hitting the bump limit, so don't panic. I'm just posting this now so no one makes a new thread with an old template.
>>2816533
I really like this idea, but you've used a very outdated map for it. It has the old Norwegian counties on it, so it's from 2019 or even before. If you update it to the 4.0.4 version here >>2787945 I can include it in the next OP.
>>2817456
Yes, the new Vietnamese provinces will be added to the map.
